Murder in Mind We talk to actor and dancer Tom Chambers about his role as the husband from Hell in Dial M for Murder.

What attracted you to the role of Tony Wendice in Dial M for Murder? It’s the Jekyll and Hyde personality. In society the villain can be very hard to spot. You get cold callers acting like your best friend when it’s a scam. So what attracts me is to play this part with as little villain as possible to make us all think twice about trust.

these characters you have to try and stand up for them even if you don’t personally like them. What do you suspect is in his back-story that makes his character so dark? Fear. Not being loved. Not connecting with people because he’s not spent enough time in nature alone or in silence! You were an accomplished dancer before Strictly; what’s your favourite dance style? I’ve always had a fascination with tap dancing. It’s like playing the drums with your feet. It’s fitness but fun at the same time.

Were you familiar with the story before you got the part and can you tell us a little about it? I had heard of the film… but I haven’t seen it. It’s your man on a mission to do well in his profession… he doesn’t quite make the big time but gets close. While he’s working away his wife falls in love with someone else. He finds out and tries to blackmail her into telling him. She still doesn’t so he plans to kill her by using other people to do it. The interesting thing is, it’s all done with style, grace and a debonair presence so the snake in the grass is even more venomous!

What are your ‘tour must-haves’? A blender so I can get my greens in - spinach and broccoli smoothie with a dash of lemon juice and Tabasco to give it a kick. An essence steam with lemongrass makes any dressing room smell good and it humidifies the air so you don’t get a dry throat.

Tony has sociopathic traits. How do you get into the mind of such a duplicitous character? I’ve read a lot and spoken to people who have been in witness trials in court. In particular the Yorkshire Ripper… how you would never have guessed from talking to him what he was capable of.

Finally, if you had to spend a weekend with Tony where do you think you’d end up? Opposite ends of the planet. I’d spot his twinkle and angle a mile off and run a mile. But if it was compulsory, maybe I’d play a game of tennis with him – at least he’d be on the other side of the net!

Is there any part of Tony’s character that audiences will have sympathy with? I hope so. Hooded claw will not be my style. When you play

A Heroine for our Time We talk to Helen George about her leading role in the stage adaptation of My Cousin Rachel. Were you familiar with the story of My Cousin Rachel? I loved it when I read it as a teenager so I was thrilled when I was asked to play Rachel. It’s a great ‘Did she or didn’t she?’ and also a brilliant feminist text which is what really drew me to the piece.

When you first read the part, what was your impression of Rachel’s character? I loved her. She has the Meghan Markle effect, she comes to this great and traditional estate with her own rules. Although she looks like every good Victorian heroine, she is something ‘other‘. She uses her feminine charms to survive and even excel in life, a real hustler. Do you find watching other portrayals of the character helpful? This character has such history with so many fine actresses playing her, I have to claim her in this moment and do what I believe is right in our story. I think it wouldn’t serve me to watch past adaptations. As an actor, is there a particular scene in the play that you enjoy most? What’s brilliant is that I get to play a completely different character from

12 | ATGTICKETS.COM

If you were to run into Rachel in real-life would you have any advice for her? I’m not sure Rachel is the type of girl who needs advice! You star in Call the Midwife, how does it feel to be back on stage after filming a TV series? Wonderful, it’s a real treat to be able find another part of me after filming series nine of Call the Midwife. But obviously I’m completely petrified too. Will your Call the Midwife co-stars be cheering you on from the audience? I hope so, but I hope they don’t tell me when they’re in! It’s always nice to be surprised at the stage door rather than worry what they are thinking in the middle of the play! What’s the best advice about acting on stage that you’ve even been given? Discover something new in each performance and run with it. As an actor you get to play many different characters, which one has been your favourite so far, and why? They are all favourites because you go through so much with them! Trixie and I have known each other for nine years, so I’ll always be fond of her. But Rachel is a joy and totally different from anything I’ve ever done – and I’m loving my new dark wig! Interview by Kerry Walker

Can you tell us a little bit about the play? Philip Ashley is grieving for his ward and cousin, Ambrose Ashley. Ambrose has died whilst living in Italy with his new wife Rachel. Philip is suspicious of Rachel after receiving a number of mysterious letters from Ambrose – and then Rachel turns up at the family estate…

those I have played before. She is my own age, sexy, fierce and in control.

MONDAY 3RD – SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY

Alluring, exotic and unconventional, Countess Rachel Sangalletti travels from Florence to the Ashley Estate in Cornwall, home of her recently deceased husband. Her presence in the house arouses dark suspicions and uncontrollable desires, not least in young Philip, cousin and heir to the Ashley home. Feverish passion battles reason in this classic Gothic romance set in the wild landscape of the rock-ribbed Cornish coast.

Directed by Anthony Banks whose many directing credits include The Girl on the Train, Strangers On A Train, Twilight Song, Gaslight, and After Miss Julie.

Helen George plays the deliciously enigmatic Rachel. Known for her role as Trixie Franklin in eight series of Call the Midwife, her recent stage credits include After Miss Julie and Love In Idleness.

The Magic of Ghost Stories We chat to the talented Andy Nyman about his phenomenally successful supernatural stage play that’s broken box office records in theatres across the world. Ghost Stories is one of the most original and exciting stage plays of the century. Without giving too much away can you tell us a little about it? I’m sorry (laughs) but I won’t. Giving too much away spoils the anticipation and we want people to experience a good scare and a laugh – it’s full of surprises. The stage play asks audiences to keep its secret. Now it’s been turned into a film can theatre audiences still be surprised? Nothing is spoiled if you’ve seen the film. Although the story is loosely similar, the stage version is full of suspense with an incredible set and sound. Audiences will leave feeling thrilled. What is it about the subject matter of Ghost Stories that compels audiences? A rattling good story. One that has meaning and impact. And it also contains a lot of truth. What was your inspiration for the story? I’ve known co-creator, Jeremy Dyson since we were 15 and we both love horror stories. I thought it’d be great to work with him so when I had the idea we pitched it and a date was set for an initial six week run. We didn’t dream it would go all over the world and we pinch ourselves at its success. I think this tour is the ultimate version of the play and everyone who comes to see it will have a ball. Who is your favourite character in Ghost Stories and why? Professor Goodman, the

20 | ATGTICKETS.COM

parapsychologist. He’s a mix of me and Professor Richard Wiseman. I’ve known him for 30 years and he’s an extraordinary and interesting man. We spoke to him very early on in the writing process and gained some fascinating insights. The science on display is actual fact. If it wasn’t presented in a play, the things he says would be a valid talk at a TED Conference. What do you think lies within the human psyche that likes to be drawn into (and believe in) the ‘unknown’? Fear of the unknown is instinctive – it’s rooted in the need to survive. If we see a shape with a face in the darkness we flee because it might be a predator. There’s no downside to that fight or flight response to the unknown. We live with fears every day but we rarely get a really good scare. That’s why we like rollercoasters and horror films – it’s getting that adrenaline rush in a safe environment. When it comes to ghosts or the supernatural, are you a sceptic? Yes – but I think of myself as a spiritual person. What question do you have that remains universally unanswered? Why are people so sh**ty to each other? It’s so simple. Take greed out of the equation and the world will be a better place. Interview by Kerry Walker

Keen to boost his flagging career, fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele arrives in England to play King Lear in Stratford – only to find that this is not the birthplace of Shakespeare, but a sleepy Suffolk village.
