TAKE A BOW! OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS ARE HELPING THE CHRISTIE Between November 2018 and March 2019 – something amazing happened in Manchester! Theatre Manager Stacey Broadmeadow presents a cheque to Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist Rebecca Halstead (left) and Professor Sarah O’Dwyer (right).

Bucket collections were held after selected performances at the Palace Theatre & Opera House. Audiences that visited the venues, generously gave £25,463.34 in support of The Christie who are leading experts in cancer care, research and education, based in Manchester.

The Christie’s Coin Wall 2018 – 2019

The Christie is the largest cancer centre in Europe, treating 40,000 patients a year and is known for many world-firsts which have impacted on cancer treatment across the globe. It also houses the largest single-site early phase clinical trials centre in the world, with around 400 trials taking place at any one time. We wanted to say thank you to The Christie, as many of our employees and their families have been treated or supported by this very special hospital. As we have raised such a high amount, The Christie have now placed an engraved coin on the donor wall, situated within the hospital. This is on display for everyone to see and be proud of. The bucket collections would not have been possible without the support and co-operation of show producers, cast members of the shows and the enormous generosity of Manchester audiences.

Thank you! 2 | ATGTICKETS.COM

EDITORIAL

Strictly Wicked Craig Revel Horwood dons his high heels and goes toe-to-toe with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Did you grow up watching pantomime? Sadly Australia doesn’t really have pantomime, and it certainly doesn’t have the same popular appeal as it does in the UK, so I never got to see one as a child. Can you remember the first one you saw? The first pantomime I saw I actually ended up starring in. Producers Qdos Entertainment first offered me a job directing one of their productions, but due to work commitments I had to turn them down – they quickly called back and asked if I’d appear in one instead. I fancied something a bit different after a few years on the panel of Strictly so I jumped at the chance of dusting my heels off and giving it a go. From that first panto I was sold – I’ve been back every Christmas for the last nine years. Now you’re in Manchester playing the Wicked Queen. What’s so enjoyable about playing that particular role? Being the Wicked Queen means I can be really nasty to Snow White and her ghastly friends, although I like to think the Queen is just a bit misunderstood, and a rather desperate woman in the midst of a mid-life crisis, which explains everything! The costumes for the Wicked Queen look fabulous – how comfortable are they to wear? They are fabulous and I’ve been allowed to have input into her general look (including doing my

4 | ATGTICKETS.COM

own make up darling) but ask any woman in heels and they’ll soon tell you how difficult that can be, and doing two shows a day in them is quite painful. I’m also pulled into a corset for my costume so ‘comfort’ is a bit of a stretch, but ultimately I need to look wickedly glamorous at all times, so no pain, no gain… Do you get many heckles from the audience? What’s been the best heckle you’ve received during a show? I’m always heckled, and I’m disappointed when I’m not; putting them back in their place keeps me on my toes! My favourite audience moment wasn’t a heckle, but after my big number I looked out into the audience and saw an entire row of people holding up paddles of ‘10’s, that was fab-u-lous. What’s the secret to a great panto? You’ve got to treat it like you would a musical and fill it with great music, a great script, a great cast and plenty of glitz and glamour... and a lot of hard work. When it works it’s wonderful. And lastly, what’s the best part of being in a panto? Panto is a fantastic introduction to theatre and is often the first taste of live entertainment for children. In a time where we’re all so transfixed by screens, it’s a brilliant opportunity to sit back, be entertained and let the imagination soar for a few hours with loved ones. And Boo and Hiss me as loudly as possible, darling…

Natural Woman The Story behind Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.

At the age of just four years old, Carole Joan Klein’s parents realised she had absolute pitch – a rare talent that enabled her to correctly name a note just by hearing it. Her music-loving mother was delighted and began giving her piano lessons – raising her height on the stool by stacking phone books so she could reach the keys. And so began the career of one of the 20th century’s most prolific singersongwriters. Carole King, as she would soon be known to the world, has written or co-written 118 pop hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 61 UK hits. Her career has been the soundtrack to millions of people’s lives since the early 1960s and many international artists have burst onto the world stage singing her songs; Billy Fury’s ‘Halfway to Paradise’, ‘The LocoMotion’ for Little Eva, and the Shirelles’ number 1 hit ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ to name but a few. King even inspired the much-loved hit ‘Oh, Carole’ penned in her honour by a childhood sweetheart called Neil Sedaka! Carole King’s success continued to endure into the latter half of the 20th century, winning four Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013 she was the recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song – the first woman to receive the award.

22 | ATGTICKETS.COM

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells her inspiring true story – that of an ordinary American girl with an extraordinary talent; it explores the love-story between her and her husband and writing partner, Gerry Goffin, their friendship and creative rivalry with fellow writers Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and her meteoric rise from heartbreak to become one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Her sensational music is the backdrop to the story of her rise to stardom, and includes tracks from Tapestry, one of the best-selling albums of all time as well as countless classics such as ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’, ‘Take Good Care of My Baby’, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’, ‘So Far Away’, ‘It Might as Well Rain Until September’, ‘Up on the Roof’ and ‘The Locomotion’. Given Carole King’s enduring popularity, it’s little surprise that Beautiful enjoyed a highly successful West End run of two and a half years and a sell out tour in 2017/18. This year, the Tony® Awardwinning show is back in Manchester to thrill audiences with tracks that are recognisable to countless people across several generations. It really is a show that lives up to its name – and one that’s not to be missed.

ATG THEATRECARD

9 TO 5? More like 5, 6, 7, 8! With 9 to 5 The Musical movin’ and shakin’ its way into theatres, we decided to give our TheatreCard Members the chance to dance like Dolly at our latest exclusive event at The Palace Theatre, Manchester. The evening started with a toe-tappin’, hip-bumpin’ workshop led by the musical’s own dance captain, Sierra Brewerton. Members spent 45 minutes learning a dance from the show, with expert instruction and plenty of exciting choreography! Members who felt more comfortable in a cosy theatre seat than up on their feet were also able to enjoy the class. A mum who decided to spectate said: ‘I’m watching my daughter up on stage, she’s doing really well. It looks really good fun. As a parent, I’m really proud!’ After all that two-steppin’, complimentary refreshments were provided in our bar... in the form of a signature ‘Cup of Ambition’ cocktail of course! Members were able to kick back, relax and socialise before sitting down to enjoy the evening performance. Everyone had a fantastic time, both at the dance class and the musical itself. They loved being able to perform a routine from the actual show, which they watched back later – this time performed by the cast as part of the storyline. One Member sent us a lovely note afterwards, saying:

‘We very much appreciated all your help throughout the event; my daughter Taylor was in her element. We’d like to extend our best wishes to Sierra, who was brilliant throughout. Please also send a message to the cast of the show, who were tremendous. It was a great show – everyone was amazing – and we’ll be telling everyone to go and watch it!’ Not a Member yet? Simply sign up for TheatreCard Classic or TheatreCard Plus – you’ll enjoy a huge range of benefits, including ticket offers, fee-free booking, priority seats, access to exclusive content... and invitations to backstage experiences like this at your local theatre.

‘Thank you so much for the enjoyable pre-show entertainment. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. We were so looked after by all the staff involved in the workshop.’
