Welcome Hello – and welcome to the Spring and Summer What’s On Guide for the King’s and Theatre Royal. Well done for making it through the Glaswegian winter and, like us, I’m sure you’re looking forward to some sunnier times! Back in the darkness of December I was delighted to host a unique performance at the Fairfield Heritage Centre, by none other than Sting. Launching the tour of his musical, The Last Ship, an invited audience was treated to a selection of the show’s powerful and moving songs. Jump aboard with us to enjoy them for yourself at the Theatre Royal 18 – 23 June. We’ve got some big Take That fans at the King’s and it is with great excitement that we welcome their musical, The Band! Featuring their best-loved hits, wrapped around a heart-warming story. We just need to have a little patience until it opens on 26 June. James Haworth, Theatre Director

Hello From... Sarah Harbison

Sales and Development Manager What do you love most about working at the theatre?

The variety! No two days are the same. I can go from networking with local business leaders and running charity events, to hosting a corporate party or bumping into a cast member backstage. It’s busy but never boring! Which show from the guide are you most looking forward to?

It’s hard to choose but I haven’t seen Derren Brown yet so that’s on my list as a must-see for 2018. We’re looking for a local company to sponsor our panto, Aladdin, at the moment, so that will be a special one too.

The Last Ship A highly personal musical from Police frontman, Sting – celebrating life, love and community in the shipyards of his youth.

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella Providing a dazzling World War II update on the classic tale, this double Olivier Award-winning production is unmissable.

THE SUNDAY SERIES: OPERA IN CONCERT

Tchaikovsky

EUGENE ONEGIN Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Director Oliver Mears (Director of Opera, The Royal Opera) teams up with award-winning designer Annemarie Woods, setting Tchaikovsky’s soaring lyric opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Sung in Russian with English supertitles.

RACHMANINOV

ALEKO & FRANCESCA DA RIMINI Adapted from a poem by Pushkin, Aleko was Rachmaninov’s first opera. A blistering tale of jealousy and violent revenge, the score draws heavily on Russian folk music, blended with the composer’s unique and melodic voice. In this concert performance, Aleko is paired with Francesca da Rimini, in a story of love and death, sin and innocence, with a plot drawn from Dante’s Inferno. This little-known opera is one of tenderness underpinned by Rachmaninov’s unmistakably dark tone.

All Aboard... Sting Sets Sail Launching The Last Ship – a heart-warming musical memoir He’s one of the world’s most acclaimed musicians, a multi-award-winning star with a jet-set lifestyle to match. So when Sting wanted to launch his thrilling new show, The Last Ship, naturally he popped into Glasgow to do it in person. The former Police frontman flew into Govan from his home in New York, to unveil details of the personal musical memoir – and to give fans, friends and ATG Theatre Card holders an exciting preview.

22 | ATGTICKETS.COM

A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8

Speaking at the Clydeside location, Sting revealed how researching the history of shipbuilding communities in his home town of Wallsend-on-the-Tyne, Tyneside and in cities like Glasgow had inspired him to write the show. He drew on the experiences of his own late manual worker dad, Ernest, as well Trade Union stalwarts like Jimmy Reid – who famously led a work-in in Govan in the 1970s – to recreate a fading world of hard work and hard men. Telling the story of a shipyard facing closure and the fightback that ensues, The Last Ship will resonate with anyone who has worked in or remembers shipyards in Glasgow and beyond. It follows the fortunes of sailor Gideon Fletcher. Returning to his family and hometown after 17 years at sea, he finds himself caught in the crossfire between past and present. The local shipyard, always the heart of his community, is now under threat and facing closure. As a half-built ship casts a large, uncertain shadow over the terraced streets he calls home, it’s time for workers to show their metal. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn and foreman Jackie White and his wife, Peggy, fight to hold their community together. Hailed as powerful and compelling, The Last Ship was premiered in the US and comes to the UK in a new revised production. The Last Ship, is set to make waves here as it tours the UK. The show stars a host of big names and familiar faces, including Joe McGann (Jackie White), Charlie Hardwick (Peggy White), Richard Fleeshman (Gideon Fletcher) and Frances McNamee (Meg Dawson). Production credits are equally prestigious, led by Karl Sydow, producer of many well known productions, including Dirty Dancing and directed by Northern Stage Artistic Director, Lorne Campbell, and boosted by set designers, 59 Productions, the dynamic Tony® Award-winning, team behind the stunning 2012 London Olympics video design. At the end of day, it’s the songs that are the thing. And in The Last Ship they’re powerful, lyrical and uplifting. Stepping up to take to a makeshift stage down the road here in Govan, Sting was only too happy to provide the crowds with an exclusive preview. Beaming broadly and dressed casually in a grey T-shirt, jogging bottoms and deck shoes, he’d come prepared with an acoustic guitar. He used it to belt out stripped down versions of some of the hit songs making this show such an international success. A P R I L – J U LY 2 0 1 8

The homegrown audience loved the striking beauty of numbers like Island Souls and put their hands together to show their appreciation for the equally memorable, Dead Man’s Boots and When We Dance. Taking a breather in-between numbers Sting explained just how much this show means to him, and how much he has drawn on his own family’s experiences to weave together fact and fiction.

Chatting to the gathered audience, which included Glaswegian former shipyard workers, he explained: “It’s a very emotional subject and when I see footage of a ship being launched in my town, the vision of that massive mountain of steel going into a river makes me cry.

“I never forgot where I came from or the people I grew up with, and about seven years ago I began to write a series of songs inspired by those early days in the shipyards, writing about people I knew. It is the nostalgia, it’s the regret and the pride those men and women had in the ships they made.” He hopes that as well as entertaining audiences, The Last Ship will provide theatre-goers with plenty of food for thought too.

“I was inspired by Jimmy Reid, a union leader in the 1970s, who staged a work-in, here on Clydeside. I’ve used that as part of the plot. He was an honourable man so he was a hero of mine. The men who are being made redundant say, ‘we’re going to finish the ship that we started, to show the world who we are, that we are not expendable.” He added: “I think the themes are universal enough to resonate almost everywhere. It’s a universal story, a universal crisis. The decline in manufacturing is a wound that’s not healed. Writing The Last Ship was my way of giving a voice to the devastation the people I was brought up with have suffered and telling their story.” Watch The Last Ship set sail at the Theatre Royal, June 18th – 23rd 2018.

The Last Ship is the UK premiere of Sting’s breathtaking new musical, an epic tale of community, hope and a great act of collective defiance. When sailor Gideon Fletcher (Richard Fleeshman) returns home after 17 years at sea, tensions between past and future flare in both his family and his town. The local shipyard is closing and no-one knows what will come next, only that a half-built ship towers over the terraces. THE PERKS We caught up with ATG Theatre Card Gold Member Joan Reid in the King’s Ambassador Lounge to find out about her VIP EXPERIENCE...

Why did you decide to become an ATG Theatre Card Gold Member?

I was looking at getting membership anyway but when I compared both I realised I was getting an awful lot more for my money. It paid for itself after the first two trips. Would you recommend becoming an ATG Theatre Card Gold Member?

Most definitely and yes, I will be renewing it! What’s the best thing about the membership scheme?

When the brochure comes through I look for all the special offers. The Ambassador Lounge is a great thing; you can leave your coats, have a complimentary drink and snack, and that’s you, it makes a difference, it really does! What’s been your best experience as an ATG Theatre Card Gold Member?

The past few years I’ve introduced my husband to the theatre, he was a bit sceptical before, I took him to Blood Brothers and now he really likes coming along. I’m taking my grandkids to Madagascar the Musical, we’re all really looking forward to it!
