FROM APRIL 2022

Hello from Noddy! A note from our Theatre Patron, Noddy Holder. Like most people, my earliest memory of theatre is going to see a pantomime when I was a child. It was a tradition at Christmas time that the whole family would go to panto. It is still important that children have an introduction to live theatre because it gives them magical experiences that will hopefully last a lifetime. The survival of theatre depends on this and encourages kids to take part in future productions.

The future of The Alex depends on the general public supporting the many different types of shows that are put on every year. The place has a comfortable, traditional, real atmosphere with pleasant and helpful people working there. Easy access to car parking and restaurants makes for an overall experience that can make a great night out, and, Lord knows, we need it after what everyone has been through the last couple of years. Please support The Alex and stay safe.

I have seen hundreds of shows over my 75 years and it is so difficult to pick one favourite. My goto musical is Cabaret. I have seen many different versions over the years and even have an original Broadway Cast vinyl recording from the sixties!

Time to Cut Loose We caught up with Darren Day, the star of stage and screen ahead of his return to The Alexandra as The Reverend in Footloose this spring. After almost becoming a professional snooker player at age 17, Darren Day’s attention was caught by the bright lights of entertainment. His decision to swap snooker cues for the cue to become an actor was a good one, as he has been one of our favourite musical theatre stars for almost 30 years. Darren is delighted to return to the city with Footloose. The production, inspired by the 1984 film, is based on a true story. In 1979, the teenage pupils of a school in Oklahoma wanted to hold a senior prom but were prevented by an ordinance from the 1800s that outlawed dancing within the city limits. The students decided to take matters into their own hands and set out to help the people of the town feel the beat! Darren Day plays the role of The Reverend and it’s a role he’s been wanting to get his teeth into for some time. What attracted you to The Reverend? I’m really looking forward to being immersed in more of a gritty role again. I’m particularly looking forward to this as it’s a proper acting role. It has a lovely plot and it’s quite poignant for me, as I have a daughter of a similar age to the high school kids. You recently performed at The Alex in Chicago. What has it been like doing two tours in quick succession? I feel very lucky to have done two tours this close to each other. I don’t think I’ve ever come back to a venue within three months with a brand new show and brand new role. Post pandemic, I feel genuinely lucky to be working. To be honest, it feels like it did at the beginning of my career; I’m feeling the excitement, passion and magic for theatre again.

8 | ATGTICKETS.COM/Birmingham

What’s your favourite song from the show? I love the songs that I sing, but the song I love most is not mine. I remember Footloose coming on the radio when I was a teenager so my favourite song would have to be the title track. In your own words, why should people come and see Footloose? You are going to have the most incredible night. You’re going to hear songs that are instantly recognisable, and I challenge you not to sing along to them. There are big numbers, there’s a beautiful story going on, the cast are ridiculously talented. You are just going to have a ball. I can’t wait to see you, I love Birmingham, I love The Alexandra. The audiences in Birmingham just get it; you laugh in the right places, you applaud in the right places, you sing along in the right places and it is always a pleasure to perform to you.

EDITORIAL

The Play That Can Do No Wrong We catch up with co-writer Jonathan Sayer about the popular stage comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong.

Describe the show to someone who hasn’t seen it? It’s a comedy all about a university drama group who put on a play and everything that could go wrong…goes wrong. There’s a big cast, lots of jokes and it pretty much does what it says on the tin. Where did you get the idea for The Play That Goes Wrong? There are three writers so there are a few different answers. We have all worked in theatre and experienced things going awry in shows we’ve been in. Some of my favourite moments watching theatre have been when something’s gone wrong and actors are forced to deal with it while keeping the show on track. On top of that, we are also influenced by a man called Michael Green who wrote The Art of Coarse Acting and actually taught one of the writers, Henry Lewis, at youth theatre. Then there’s a huge amount of physical comedy which is definitely a nod to Chaplin and Keaton.

12 | ATGTICKETS.COM/Birmingham

Some of the events in the play seem like an actor’s worst nightmare! Lots of actors come up to us at the end of shows, be they professional or amateur, with some fantastic stories of things that have happened to them in different productions. I think the show has quite a cathartic effect for them. But it’s not just actors, I think the idea of making a fool of yourself in front of a huge number of people is something that everyone can relate to. Everyone has felt that feeling where they want the ground to open up and swallow them! Has the success of the show surprised you? Absolutely. I remember about 10 years ago performing in our improv show and there were more people on stage than there were in the audience, so of course it’s a surprise! We’ve been totally blown away by the response. We’re so thrilled that people enjoy the work and the characters and that we’ve been able to make so many different people laugh. The show began in such a small way performing in a 60-seater pub theatre, so for it to be enjoyed in huge venues all around the world is very humbling. Over 35 countries worldwide have performed a Mischief Production. We went to Budapest and watched a replica of The Play That Goes Wrong where everything was exactly the same, but it was being performed in Hungarian. So many things have come from this and that’s amazing.

STAGE EXPERIENCE

From West Mids to West End We caught up with Stage Experience alumnus Liam Doyle who, since taking part in our Youth Theatre programme in 2006 and 2007, has starred in a number of professional West End and Touring shows. He accounts much of his success to his time in Stage Experience. How excited were you to hear Stage Experience is back? I’m so excited that it’s back. It meant the world to me and it actually helped me become a professional. When I walk into the theatre here now as a professional actor, it’s amazing because without The Alex and Stage Experience it wouldn’t be a thing.

What’s your happiest moment from Stage Experience? The first time, when we did Copacabana and the curtain came down and everybody went crazy screaming and jumping and gave each other a massive hug. To be on stage with people that have the same passion as you, and care about it as much as you, is probably my favourite thing I took from it.

How has Stage Experience helped you achieve success? It was completely vital to every success I’ve had as a performer in musical theatre, because it was where I learnt what it’s like to be on stage and be part of a company. It’s not just about the show, it’s about making friends, being able to meet people and do something you’re really passionate and care about. I can’t say enough about how much it really helped me.

Liam Doyle (on stage) who plays Kurt with co-star Rory Phelan performing in Heathers the Musical UK tour 2021.

What’s your top tip for anyone invited to audition? Know the show and do your research. No need for any nerves. No need to be scared. Just go for it and you’ll genuinely have the best time ever. It’s not very often you get to audition on a professional stage with a professional director and musical director. It’s the best kind of insight into what it’s like to be a professional.

What’s your top tip for anyone wanting to apply? Go for it and just enjoy it! You will have the best summer. The memories have stuck with me my whole life. Some of my best friends that I made were from Stage Experience and they’ve gone on to work professionally as well.
