Introduction I am pleased to present the 2019 Annual Review for ATG Creative Learning & Community Partnerships (CLCP). This has been a landmark year, marking the beginning of an exciting new phase of transformation and growth. In 2018–19, we developed a new strategic plan that sets out an ambitious programme of cultural education activities across our regions and in the West End. For which, we have seen the first fruits of our labour with increased participation, award nominations and our strengthening ambassadorship across the UK. This year our programmes reached more than 64,000 people of all ages, from a diverse range of backgrounds, establishing ATG Creative Learning as a recognised sector leader for widening access to the performing arts.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our CLCP teams for the enormous contribution they have made throughout the year. I would also like to thank ATG senior management, and all our supporters, for helping to make 2018–19 such a great year. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead as each day brings us closer to achieving our vision.

Central to our activities has been our programmes for students and education professionals. With the challenges currently faced by schools, our contribution is more important than ever – which is why our work in this area will continue to be a strong focus for the year ahead.
Who We Are ATG is an international theatre operator, producer, marketing partner and ticketing services provider. Creative Learning & Community Partnerships (CLCP) is an important part of ATGâ€™s commitment to deliver excellence in all aspects of community and educational engagement. The work we do unlocks the potential of our venues as a valuable resource in the world of cultural education.

We engage and empower people of all abilities, ages, genders, races and socioeconomic backgrounds in local communities and schools, with the aim of increasing access to the performing arts.
What We Do The CLCP offering is delivered across five key categories to ensure ATG’s core values are upheld at all times, and to guarantee our reach and impact across the UK. Our nationwide programme is vibrant and reflective of the current educational landscape, underpinned by our five programme categories:
We forge relationships with other organisations to further our impact locally and nationally. Partnerships are formed with grassroots organisations, local businesses and schools, other arts organisations, the local creative community, trusts and foundations and more.
Our programme is a vehicle through which all members of the public are able to access, experience and enjoy all that their theatres have to offer. It engages people who might otherwise feel that theatre is not for them, accommodates and empowers people of all abilities, ages, genders, races and socio-economic backgrounds.
CLCP is proactive, dynamic and delivers directly to the particular local community’s needs, challenges and opportunities.
We work with visiting producers and companies to engage participants through educational activities that nurture and develop their interest in, and understanding of, the show.
ANNUAL NATIONWIDE ATG INITIATIVE
This new annual initiative brings together all UK teams around a specific subject and challenge. Over the last year, we’ve been working together to create an artistic-led programme around the issues regarding safe and appropriate social media use.
CLCP is offered locally throughout the UK, and responds to the specific needs and opportunities in each area. Activities take place in our inspiring venues, at events and festivals, and in schools and other community settings.

2019 Highlights Venue: Liverpool Empire Participants: 45 Ages: 14 – 20 Audience: 1,366 What We Do Each summer, the Liverpool Empire Youth Musical Theatre Company brings a full-scale programmed production to the theatre. The most recent production was Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. The show was a great success and attracted critical acclaim, receiving a five-star review from North West End. Following its success, we began the new academic year by holding open auditions for the 2019 production of Rent. Over 150 people auditioned and a company of 40 was selected. These students will work with the Creative Learning team for the full academic year, taking part in weekly classes in voice (singing, speaking and vocal health), dance (conditioning and technique) and acting (including audition technique and preparation).
What We Achieve The Youth Musical Theatre Company provides young people in the region with the best possible training and industry opportunities. It gives them the chance to take part in performances and community activities, and to enjoy free or heavily subsidised theatre tickets to shows at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. This year’s cohort took part in regular masterclasses by visiting professionals including Layton Williams, who starred as Jamie New in the West End production of Everybody’s Talking about Jamie, Wendy Gadian from Central School of Speech and Drama, and Mary King from Glyndebourne Opera.
‘My son has loved every moment and the show gave him new challenges and allowed him to develop and improve as a performer for his chosen career. I know how very much he appreciated the opportunity to have this dream role. The friendships he has formed from the Youth Theatre will I think be lifelong as well as the skills he has learnt.‘ Parent
What’s more, youth-theatre members are entered into examinations and gain nationally recognised qualifications from institutions such as Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) and Performing Arts Award (PAA). What Happens Next The Liverpool Empire Youth Musical Theatre Company programme develops year-on-year. Many company members from this year have been successful in securing places at prestigious national dance and drama schools, while alumni of the company are currently working both in the West End and in touring productions.

Youth Performance in Liverpool Reaches New Heights
The Magic of Matilda Changes Children’s Story
Venues: Milton Keynes Theatre, Sunderland Empire, Manchester Palace, Liverpool Empire, Edinburgh Playhouse Partners: RSC & local partners Participants: 1,460 Ages: 5 – 16 Audience: 3,111 What We Delivered Local CLCP teams, in partnership with RSC Learning, have been working on Matilda the Musical’s ‘Change my Story’ creative learning programme, engaging schools and families across Sunderland, Manchester, Liverpool, Milton Keynes and Edinburgh. This included drama, creative writing, movement and singing linked to the touring production. The designated Matilda Champion Schools made a two-year commitment to the programme, working closely with CLCP teams and regional theatres with RSC on a programme of work inspired by Matilda the Musical. During year one, schools have worked with Creative Learning teams and the RSC to stage a unique
45-minute edit of Matilda the Musical as their school play. Teachers received two days of in-depth professional development training from RSC professionals to give them the skills and confidence to direct the special version of Matilda the Musical in their schools. What Happened Next Year two will see Champion Schools become part of our exciting Partner Schools initiative, which aims to provide further access for pupils in the regions to our amazing venues, enable teachers to take part in professional development, and build strong schools networks so schools can share a high-quality arts education.

Stoke Schools Learn Through Play
Venue: Stoke Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall Partner: The Kayden Dunn Memorial Fund Participants: 25 Ages: 14 – 22 Audience: 800+ What We Delivered This year, young people from Stoke and Staffordshire schools and colleges joined the team at Creative Stoke-on-Trent for a fortnight to rehearse and perform a Theatre in Education play. Chicken, written by Mark Wheeler, is based on road safety and toured to seven Stoke primary schools. What We Achieved Our local landscape significantly informs how we approach the delivery of our programme. Theatre in Education pieces have been devised and performed to local groups and schools, directed by our in-house talent, allowing teams and creative partners to create original pieces that address local priorities and issues.
Real Performances for Young Entertainers Venue: Nationwide
Partners: Local partners across the UK Participants: 687 Ages: 8 – 25 Audience: 9,321 What We Do During the summer break, youth performance projects such as Stage Experience are delivered to hundreds of local youngsters. Wannabe performers can rehearse with a professional creative team – performing with costumes, lighting, sound and a magnificent set to a packed-out audience. Meanwhile, those who’d rather stay behind the scenes can work with a venue’s technical team, getting hands-on experience of the technical and digital aspects of staging a production. Performances cover a range of titles, and are delivered in our venues from Folkestone to Glasgow. What We Achieved These unforgettable experiences give young
people a taste of a professional musical-theatre performance experience, boosting both their skills and their confidence. Previous participants across the UK have gone on to achieve professional success. The company programme develops year-on-year. This year, many company members have been successful in securing places at prestigious national dance and drama schools, while alumni of the company are currently working both in the West End and in touring productions.
‘CLCP’s recent collaboration with local high-school students was presented as a well-organised, professional theatrical production. The play was extremely thought-provoking, presenting key themes of road safety that had direct links to the PSHE school curriculum and towards accreditation on the National Modeshift Stars Road Safety Programme. Venue: Stoke Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall
Partner: Vivienne Shelley Dance Studios, community group Artlink, St. Nathaniel’s and Sandbach High School for Girls Participants: 150 Ages: 8 – 80 Audience: 454 What We Delivered From 29th November to 1st December, CLCP Stoke-on-Trent produced Theatre Workshop’s Oh What a Lovely War! with cast members from all areas of the community – encompassing groups from Stoke, Staffordshire and Cheshire. It was a lifechanging project for many participants, some of whom had never performed before. The Tech Academy assisted our Regent Theatre staff with the technical elements of the show, including running the sound and projection. The performance finished with The Last Post and a tribute to all the soldiers who served during World War One, from North Staffordshire, South Staffordshire and Cheshire regiments. Poppies were laid down by the full company and a minute’s silence was held.
Staffordshire Film Archive provided real photographs and video footage of soldiers at the front preparing for and entering into battle, as well as footage of injured soldiers, endless graves and the horror of No Man’s Land. These were projected during the performance. What Happened Next All participants were asked to fill in evaluation sheets after the event to sum up what they had learned and enjoyed. As a final question, we asked them to condense the experience into three words. Answers included exciting, challenging, unique, inspirational, fun, emotional, wonderful, breath-taking, rewarding, exhausting, life-changing and our favourite – ‘best week ever’.

Trust and Confidence Grows in Richmond Tweens and Teens Venue: Richmond
Partners: Ballet Boyz, Richmond Emotional Health Service, Richmond Theatre Trust Participants: 10 Ages: 10 â€“ 16 What We Delivered This year saw the continuation of the working relationship between the partners to engage young people from different backgrounds, empowering them to connect and develop transferable social skills together. What We Achieved We nurtured and developed our relationships with the Emotional Health Service, the young people who access their services, and other partners such as Ballet Boyz. We also provided an opportunity for young people who otherwise would not have access to, or would simply not think to take part in, an activity. These young people were able to interact with each other, helping to improve their confidence in speaking to others and their interpersonal and social skills.
What Happened Next The ongoing relationship across the partnership continues to look towards the future, with the aim of creating more programmes for at-risk young people through impactful and meaningful engagement.

Brighton Teachers Learn by Twilight Venue: Brighton Participants: 22 Ages: Adult What We Delivered CLCP hosted a twilight, on-stage session for drama teachers and other teachers involved in theatre and the arts in Brighton and Hove primary, secondary and special schools. What We Achieved The twilight session gave us the opportunity to meet and connect with teachers and teaching assistants in the city; inform them about the CLCP
Audience: 1,800 What We Delivered This January, the team at New Wimbledon Theatre played host to Merton Music Foundation Presents, where 1,800 primary school children watched two gigs featuring local electric string band StringFever. In partnership with the theatre, schools paid just £2 per pupil to experience a 60-minute gig in our beautiful auditorium, with an exciting light show created by the in-house team.

What Happened Next Plans are already starting to come together to continue the partnership with Merton Music Foundation for a two-day event in 2020 to mark the theatre’s 110th year.

Students, Teachers and Families Alike Benefit from Promising Partnerships Venue: Sunderland
Partners: National Theatre, Sunderland Culture Participants: 1,500+ What We Delivered Theatre Nation is a three-year strategic audiencedevelopment initiative that supports the development of drama audiences, partnering with local theatres including the Sunderland Empire.

The programme began in November 2018 with a small-scale tour of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – performed at six schools and a college in Sunderland to a total audience of 1,138 young people.
This tour was followed by an innovative programme of activity in February 2019, inspired by the National Theatre’s War Horse, which engaged over 500 first-time theatre-goers from families across the city. Activities across the programme were complemented with free training for teachers to support their delivery of learnings from both plays and texts into classroom settings.
What Happened Next The positive outcomes of this nationally significant partnership are evident. Future audiences continue to be nurtured, while the partnership provides continued support for the development of the city’s ambitious cultural offer. CLCP is preparing for the next milestone in this journey as Sunderland welcomes back another schools’ tour, produced by the National Theatre, in autumn 2019. Theatre Nation is funded by Arts Council England.

We also offered free online access to rehearsal diaries, digital resources and an educational pack. 49 students attended the Page to Stage session led by the Associate Director of Macbeth and two cast members. Students were given a real insight into the production, exploring different deliveries of each scene and seeing how these played out. The session finished with a Q&A where the actors spoke of their experiences and the students left feeling inspired and enthused about seeing the production later that day.
Workshop Brings Macbeth to Life for Glasgow Students and Teachers Venue: Theatre Royal, Glasgow Partner: National Theatre Participants: 12 teachers and 121 students Ages: 12+ What We Delivered We supported the National Theatre’s production of Macbeth with a Page to Stage insight session for secondary students, a post-show Q&A, a teachers’ professional development workshop, and technical and backstage tours for local college students.
The professional development session brought together teachers from Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Falkirk, North Ayrshire and East Dunbartonshire, and offered creative ideas and strategies for exploring the play in the classroom. What We Achieved Students and teachers gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the production and for us it was an opportunity to connect with new audiences.
‘The workshop offered a practical way to explore the character relationships, themes and plot. The activities were relevant, easy to understand, entertaining and easily translated with my pupils. The workshop also gave me new ideas about some of the characters’ motivations, and I saw several aspects of the play in a different light. Social Media Gets Used for Good in ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ Venue: Nationwide
Partners: Wicked UK, Anti Bullying Alliance and a range of valued local partners including Altru Drama, LEAP and local artists and practitioners Participants: 2,452 Ages: 6 – 40 Audience: 2,000+ and an engaged social media reach of 160,000 What We Delivered During 2018-19, our CLCP teams worked together to create and deliver an artistic-led programme of workshops, performances and experiences designed to raise awareness of issues around social media and bullying. This collaborative approach was strengthened through a partnership with the award-winning production Wicked – with its themes of identity, acceptance and friendship – and the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Nearly 2,500 children and young people directly participated in Smoke and Mirrors; the accompanying social media campaign and film had an impact on thousands more.
Smoke and Mirrors Activity Included: • Drama, dance and singing workshops exploring social media, bullying and the themes of Wicked, organised for over 100 people in Stoke • Back to the App performance and creative-writing workshops delivered to over 1,000 children in eight primary schools in Liverpool and Sefton, in partnership with Altru Drama CIC • Devised performances created by Milton Keynes Youth Theatre and streamed live across social media, receiving over 800 views • Research and workshops provided for around 200 young people in Glasgow • A promenade production focusing on the experiences of women in theatre created by Brighton & Hove 6th Form College • Workshops and performances delivered to schools and the Youth Theatre, which inspired an original film created by the young people involved
What We Achieved Smoke and Mirrors focused on diversity, difference and how theatre brings people together. Despite its local delivery, it united communities across the UK – making this unique project nationally significant. What Happened Next We were overwhelmed with the response to the campaign, and devising and delivering a nationally significant annual project across the UK has now become a key part of ATG’s CLCP offering.

The graduate scheme is a pioneering two-year programme that trains future theatre managers and backstage professionals, with those completing the course now in leadership roles in venues across the UK. We also deliver technical apprenticeships, careers mornings, employability projects, work experience, placements and internships, and support the ‘Inspiring the future’ campaign led by UKTheatre. Hands-On Workshops Provide a Step Up to Work in the West End Venue: West End Venues Participants: 39 Ages: 14 – 28 What We Do At the core of our West End CLCP offer is Work in Theatre, our unique work-related learning course. Twice a year, during school holidays, we blow the doors to the industry wide open and give young people the rare opportunity to see how the theatre works from within.

Participants take part in a series of workshops that provide invaluable insight into the job of a director, producer, marketeer, programmer and many more roles. During each workshop, practical challenges are set by our experts that are pertinent to each job; with encouragement, participants work in teams to find solutions.
Spotlight on Abbie Jenkins: from inspired, to intern, to indispensable I was studying music at university and I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do afterwards. Luckily, I discovered ATG’s Work in Theatre course and began my journey with ATG. Spending time in venues opened my eyes to the many roles to be found in professional theatre, and I found that I had a keen interest in backstage operations – so much so that I started working with the technical teams at my university and stagemanaged some of their productions.
Working alongside all the different departments within ATG helped me to understand my strengths and develop the skills I needed to progress. Not only did I acquire the skills needed to work successfully in a busy office environment, but I also gained invaluable insight into the inner workings of a major international theatre organisation.

At the end of Work in Theatre, I applied for an internship at ATG and, after a successful application and interview process, began the three-month office placement in June 2017.

The sessions have proved to be beneficial to those who are still deciding on their career path, as well as those who know they want a career in theatre, but do not know what skills, experience and qualifications are required.
