Creative Learning is delivered across five key categories to ensure ATG Entertainment's core values are upheld, and to guarantee our reach and impact across the group. Our programme is vibrant and reflective of the ever-changing cultural and educational landscape.
We forge relationships with other organisations to further our impact locally, nationally and internationally. Partnerships are formed with grassroots organisations, local businesses and schools, other arts organisations, the local creative community, funding bodies, trusts and foundations, and more.
Our programme is a vehicle through which all members of the public can access, experience, and enjoy all that our venues have to offer. It engages people who might otherwise feel that live entertainment is not accessible to them, and accommodates and empowers people of all abilities, ages, genders, races and socio-economic backgrounds.
We are proactive, dynamic and deliver directly to the local community’s needs, challenges and opportunities. Our venues are beacons for the community, serving an important civic role in support of local priorities, such as placemaking and cultural agendas.
We nurture our relationships with producers, and work with visiting productions and companies as residents whilst at our venues. Together we engage participants through educational activities that stimulate and develop our audiences and their interest in, and understanding of the show.
We bring together all teams around a specific subject and challenge, allowing us to leverage our network to ensure an incredible joint impact. Our core Creative Learning team are organised as one groupwide force, working together as an agile collective to share expertise and raise the quality and breadth of our leading work.
Creative Learning is offered locally and responds to specific needs and opportunities in each area. Activities take place in our inspiring venues, online, at events and festivals, and in schools and other community settings.

Work in Theatre, a partnership between Get into Theatre and ATG Entertainment, is a new nationwide careers programme addressing the need for wider diversity in the live entertainment industry. Co-authored with teachers and funded by Arts Council England, the year-long project is comprised of three strands: Work Experience, Teacher Conference & CPD, and Emerging Artist Commissions. It is designed to improve access to theatre career pathways for underprivileged and underrepresented young people and emerging artists.
15 ATG Entertainment venues produced the programme, spotlighting the breadth of offstage careers available, inspiring those that may not have thought theatre was a space for them, and enabling teachers to deliver informed theatre careers lessons. Alongside the in-person delivery, digital activity is hosted on getintotheatre.org.
Work In Theatre will reach more than 30,000 young people, teachers, and freelance artists across the UK, improving equal access for young people from lower socio-economic, d/Deaf or disabled, care-experienced, and Black, Asian & ethnic backgrounds.
Each venue team commissioned a local, early career artist to make a short film about their journey and experiences working in the theatre industry. This paid opportunity provided the chance for artists to work directly with their local ATG venue, building new relationships and promoting regional talent. Aimed at young people seeking more information on theatre careers, this unique series of films can easily be found on the Get into Theatre website.
Building on the success of Work in Theatre courses in Milton Keynes and the West End, this area of the programme was designed to offer hands-on, practical work experience to young people across the UK. Venues developed their own versions of the course, targeting specific schools and young people from underrepresented groups. Offering insight from freelance practitioners, industry professionals and ATG staff, the activity provided an indepth overview of the vast variety of training opportunities and career paths available.
Our online Teacher Conference equipped teachers with an overview of access points and training pathways into the live entertainment industry, with guest speakers and panel members from universities, vocational training institutions and industry leaders. Over 100 teachers, educators and careers advisors attended the evening, which included opportunities for networking and connecting delegates to their local Creative Learning team.
In consultation with Primary and Secondary Teachers we created an activity-based Theatre Careers Toolkit which Creative Learning teams introduced to teachers and careers advisors via in-house CPD sessions.
‘I learnt so much and seeing all the parts of the theatre you usually wouldn’t be able to, was so exciting! I am honestly so sad it’s over.’

Creative Learning Presents is a new model for presenting exciting, excellent quality, relevant productions for schools in our communities. In partnership with ATG Productions, Creative Learning Presents offers daytime performances underneath national tours, without compromising on design or presentation, and with affordable ticket prices for local schools. Alongside the productions, schools are provided with pre and post-show resources.
The inaugural production touring to five ATG venues was Macbeth by Out of Chaos. Their production combined physical theatre with powerful text work, telling the story clearly with two actors playing every part and providing all the drama,
intrigue, and madness of Macbeth in 80 high-octane minutes. Over 7,500 children and young people have seen Macbeth at their local venue.
HHHHH‘I left the theatre knowing that I had seen something very special, a working of Shakespeare that was captivating and at the same time innovative, but above all worthwhile. The importance of engaging with young people and growing a future audience for live theatre in its many forms is vital and ATG Creative Learning are at the forefront of this. Hats off to them and to Out of Chaos.’

Winner of the 2023 UK Theatre Award for Workforce, Change the Script is a programme designed to support people local to our London venues who are longterm unemployed, in receipt of government benefits, or with lived experience of homelessness.
A first of its kind, Change the Script offered 10 participants paid technical training, offering the possibility of theatre careers to people who had never considered this as an option open to them. The 3-week training course covered everything from health and safety to construction; each participant gained level 3 Health and Safety and CSCS and Manual Handling qualifications, followed by a 4-week paid placement in one of our West End venues.
Change the Script was delivered by ATG’s West End Creative Learning Team in partnership with building developers WATES and LANDSEC and educational provider Skillcentre.
Educating. Entertaining. Empowering. Enriching.
‘I found the whole programme incredibly interesting and useful. I have found a new love of theatre and the West End Creative Learning team have helped me get a paid placement on another West End show. I now feel I have a career path.’

Swansea Arena's Creative Learning
Producer selected a captivating lineup of 9 bands and a total of 57 local emerging artists, aiming to raise expectations, granting these artists deserved recognition, a unique platform and an opportunity to perform to an audience of 855 people
The lineup exemplified the rich and diverse musical tapestry of Swansea and South Wales, making House Party a celebration of the region's creative essence.
Tourism, Events & Hospitality students from the University of Wales Trinity St. David collaborated with and worked alongside the Swansea Arena team to plan, organise and promote the event.
Proceeds from ticket sales and voluntary donations went to the Music Venue Trust, directly benefiting the local grassroots music venues that worked with the Swansea Arena team to help promote and organise House Party.
A Music Venues Committee has now been established in the city and Swansea Arena are planning future events and activities to continue and develop their support of emerging artists and grassroots venues.
‘You very rarely get to be in places like this so early in your career, and it makes you think, if I can do this now, how far can I go?’
Honey Rich, musician
‘I’m not aware of anything like this happening before, grassroots bands getting to play in an arena is pretty much unheard of.’

For Christmas 2023, Creative Learning at Theatre Royal Brighton presented daytime performances of Once Upon A Whispering Wood in and around Front of House areas of the venue.
This beautiful new show was co-produced with Brighton-based Flock Theatre Makers. The research and development process included workshops with members of Voices in Exile’s Migrant Welcome Project and the production was co-created through ensemble rehearsals with director and music director Freya Wynn-Jones and performers Laura Mugridge and Rebecca Rayne. The immersive design was created by Sophia Lovell Smith.
With an audience of 20 at a time, the show led audiences around the theatre and children and adults were actively encouraged to participate in the search for the Wood; when they reached their final destination a
story of hope and joy unfolded, with children contributing their thoughts and ideas.
We presented 46 performances including two performances for family groups from Voices in Exile who work with refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in Sussex and Surrey, and one relaxed accessible performance.
A total of 875 people came to see it and we achieved 95% sales.
‘I’ve just listened to her recount the entire story and the entire experience. She got everything, remembered everything, took positive values away from it. It was really lovely, thank you.’

The Regent Theatre’s annual Dance Festival is a vibrant seven-night community festival that brings together dance companies, schools, and adult groups from across Staffordshire, Cheshire, and the North West.
The festival was bursting with passion and energy, and featured all genres of dance from explosive tap to elegant contemporary, as dance companies explored the joy of movement, music, and dance through the decades!
This year over 3,200 people watched 55 dance groups, with a total of 1,159 participants aged from 3 – 76 years, in seven performances that celebrated the phenomenal local talent on the Regent Theatre stage.
‘Honestly after last night I feel everything has changed for me as part of the LGBTQ+ community, seeing and hearing the audience last night really showed the amount of love we have in Stoke.’
024 Dance participant
‘What was perfect was the pride in which the performers took in their work, the joy that they provided both for themselves and the audience and the inspiration that dance and movement can give.’

Connect Company are a diverse group of adults with additional needs who meet weekly in the Sunderland Empire Theatre to develop drama and performance skills.
In summer 2023 the company of 11 embarked on a tour of their devised show, Over the Rainbow.
Over the Rainbow explored themes of identity, belonging and resilience and was devised by the group in conjunction with theatre practitioners. The performance also included Makaton which was developed with a specialist Makaton practitioner.
On the tour the group visited 3 local SEND schools, playing to a total audience of 115 pupils.
They received high praise for not only the production itself, but also for inspiring a new generation of young people with additional needs to see that anything is possible if you work hard.
‘The looks on the faces of my class were absolutely priceless – they’ve never seen themselves in performances like this before.’

To celebrate 60 years since The Beatles first visited Stockton Globe, we held two large scale community events – a daytime live music experience for local schools and an evening commemorative community event.
8 local primary schools participated in the daytime event, many visiting the Stockton Globe for the first time. Ahead of the event we sent out video recordings of five well-known songs by The Beatles for the students to learn, and invited them to research both the history of the venue and ‘Beatlemania’. On the day 423 pupils and 43 teachers joined us for a joyful afternoon of singing with a live band, games and competitions; the event linked to a key area of the primary music curriculum.
For the evening celebration we invited nine local ensembles – from local performing arts students to community choirs – to recreate The Beatles' set list from the 22nd November 1963 concert, encouraging them to create their own unique versions. 216 performers shared their
music with an audience of over 900 people
The Stockton Globe volunteer team curated a Beatles exhibition and audience members visited the Beatles themed photobooth complete with Abbey Road backdrop and props. This project was made possible through generous funding from Stockton Borough Council.
‘It has had a massive impact on the children in the run up to the event and the actual day – events like this give our children a memorable experience that they just wouldn’t get outside of school.’
Bader Primary School Teacher
‘60 years ago today, The Beatles performed at The Stockton Globe and tonight I’m watching my 87-year-old Dad perform on the same stage. Proudest daughter in the world.’

Through a mix of digital and in-person delivery, 174 people participated in our Masterclass programme covering musical theatre, stage make-up, technical theatre, show exploration and dance techniques.
The variety of themes in the programme, along with digital provision as well as in person, opened up our venue and the arts in general to a diverse group of participants from our local community who ranged from 5 – 65 years of age, with a mix of experience, interests and skills.
A number of participants now attend weekly youth theatre sessions, as well as attending shows, holiday projects, career
development initiatives and skill development workshops.
‘I want to commend your team for creating an environment where children like my son feel encouraged, inspired and, most importantly, valued. The three hours he spent under your guidance has undoubtedly fuelled his love for theatre, and for that I am truly grateful.’

Scratch Night is a way for artists to test ideas on a live audience within an allocated time, followed by space to access feedback and to network. Works presented are in progress and at the early stages of development. The nights are a platform for sharing as we hand over the stage to local talent; the audience join us on-stage to watch works come to life for the first time, support the local community, and try something new at the Grand Opera House.
Across two events we supported three local artists and three small theatre groups, presenting their work on-stage. Our first Scratch Night explored queer and neurodivergent performances; the second shared female led narratives. Scratch Nights allowed us to bring a younger, more diverse demographic into the venue, create
ties with our local community, and support future talent.
‘It made me look at Grand Opera House in a different way, which felt really community driven. There was something special about work-in-progress being shared on the stage. It was very accessible for me and great to meet other disabled artists!’

‘I had a great time! I have lived in York all my life, and this is the first Scratch Night I have seen pop up so was very quick to come along. It was a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some early stage theatre and get to know some of York's theatre network.’

Following the success of last year’s ‘Panto Package’ for schools, Glasgow Creative Learning were delighted to receive further funding from local sponsor, Aliter Capital, to deliver the project again at The Kings and Theatre Royal.
We have continued to work closely with Glasgow City Council and Developing the Young Workforce to target schools in the most deprived and diverse areas of the city and widen access to theatre for children and young people.
The package includes a workshop in school, subsidy towards tickets to a selected performance and a resource pack supported by Crossroads Pantomimes.
Our Creative Learning Team delivered 19 workshops across the city, strengthening partnerships with
schools who participated last year and forming new relationships with schools and communities.
The 'Panto Package' supported 17 schools, with a total of 831 pupils from P3 to S4, to attend a performance of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ at The King’s Theatre Glasgow, making memories that will last a lifetime.
‘All pupils had the opportunity to participate in the workshop – it was great to see them develop new skills and grow in confidence.’

Our community activation launched with a press conference held by Mayor London Breed, who spoke about the THE WIZ’s groundbreaking representation of the Black community, announcing that BroadwaySF would donate 100 tickets to local school children and declaring January 8, 2024 'The Wiz Day in San Francisco', lighting City Hall yellow in honor of the Yellow Brick Road.
Cast and creative team members attended the Bayview Opera House, African American Arts & Culture Complex, and GLIDE Memorial Church for community engagement events including dance lessons, panels, and performances;
and a partnership with the Hip-Hop Sisters Foundation sold 160 tickets to a performance that included a photo-op and post-show Q&A with rapper/THE WIZ producer MC Light.
THE WIZ has played a major role in the history of Black theatre, arts, and culture and we focused on celebrating this legacy when bringing this revival to SF, partnering with the Mayor’s Office and local not-for-profit organizations in order to reach new audiences.
We are determined to maintain our connections with these partner organizations and ensure that we welcome our local communities to all types of shows going forward.
The Joci Awards is a scholarship and educational initiative dedicated to nurturing young talent in the performing arts. Drawing participants from San Antonio to the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the program has distributed over $1.5 million in scholarships, making it the single largest scholarship program for the performing arts in the United States.
Often compared to the 'Tony Awards of Texas,' the Joci Awards send two exceptional students to New York City to represent the region at the Jimmy Awards, showcasing their abilities on a national platform and highlighting the significance of high school theater excellence in San Antonio and South Texas.
This year’s program received an unprecedented 354 applications from students across more than 71 high schools. With the generous support of donors and community partners, the Majestic Empire Foundation has offered a premier educational experience to over 43 finalists, 20% of whom are from the Lower Rio Grande Valley, highlighting the program's broad reach and impact.
Our commitment to fostering the talents of over 750 students through our year-round educational initiatives, including free workshops and masterclasses to support their preparation for the Joci Awards auditions, demonstrates our dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent and ensuring accessible, high-quality educational opportunities for all students.

GiGi’s Playhouse is a non-profit organization with a national network of Down Syndrome Achievement Centers that provide free, lifechanging therapeutic, educational, and career training programs for individuals with Down Syndrome. The team at Smart Financial Centre hosted 12 members and parents from GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land location. The team organized a full-venue behind-the-scenes tour, offered insights into venue operations, and spoke about career opportunities in the performing arts. Members from GiGi’s Playhouse enjoyed a group photo on the SFC stage and a Q&A session with the staff.
The incredible energy and warmth from the families and members of GiGi's Playhouse were nothing short of amazing, infusing our team with infectious enthusiasm. This experience not only strengthened our bond
with the community but also served as a powerful source of inspiration. The mutual exchange of positivity and connection between our staff and GiGi's Playhouse Sugar Land members became a defining success, enriching both sides in unexpected and fulfilling ways.
After the tour, each department is looking into creating positions at the venue that could provide mentorship or employment opportunities tailored for members from GiGi’s Playhouse. We aim to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where people with Down Syndrome would feel empowered, respected, and valued. 2023–24
Nothing beats the energy and excitement of a great live experience.
Its enduring creativity and appeal are no doubt linked to its open and collaborative nature.
