I N T R O T O LY N C H ’ S F I V E C I T Y I M A G E F O R M S : IDENTIFYING THEM IN AN URBAN SEGMENT

We we re i nt ro d u c e d to f i ve c i t y i m a ge fo r m s o r i g i n a l l y p ro p o s e d by Ke v i n Ly n c h : Pa t h s , Nodes, Edges, Landmarks and Districts.

The exercise exploring and identifying the above five components in a select area of San Francisco and creating a digital massing of the area using Google SketchUp. The area chose was Filbert St., beginning my journey from the Embarcadero walking west towards C o i t t o w e r.

Learning Outcome H e r e , I g o t a b a s i c t a s t e o f t h e s e f i v e e l e m e n t s . I a c k n o w l e d g e d t h e i r e x i s t e n c e i n a c i t y. I was successfully able to identify them. The digital model gave me a sense of proportion in relation to the surroundings. Almost accurate measurements of street widths and building heights were done with the help of the ruler tool in Google maps.

My sensitivities towards concepts and principles of urban design were beginning to take shape. This exercise was especially helpful in that it enables students to categorize major c o m p o n e n t s o f t h e c i t y, o b s e r v e t h e i r o r i e n t a t i o n a n d l o c a t i o n i n r e l a t i o n t o o t h e r m a j o r urban components. The focus on details such as spatial integration also inform us of how the value of an urban component determines how it must be introduced to the public.

F o r i n s t a n c e , I k n o w n o w t h a t S a n s o m e S t . i s a n e d g e t o Te l e g r a p h h i l l because of the drastic increase in slope, change of terrain and spatial qualities, change in design language, materials, amount of vegetation, exposure to sunlight, amount of overhead and bounding spaces in paths, change in orientation and numerous directional shifts that respond to the slope condition, different construction strategies, etc.

Learning Outcome This exercise helped me discover useful strategies on obtaining solid information that will help me successfully create my desired expression. I have figures that have successfully resulted in creating intimate spaces, grand yet comforting spaces, flexible yet enclosed spaces etc that I can use at mission bay to create an environment I intend to. This exercise has definitely take me a step further into understanding urban design concepts pertaining to public spaces.

My iteration focuses on paths.

Learning Outcome I analyzed the paths paying careful attention to how it holds and transitions between a variety of spaces, the attributes of the transitioning nodes and how they respond to the surrounding context. I also analyzed the impact of these changing settings they are desirable and offer some form of vitality to area. I learned that such spaces are often extremely v a l u e d b y m a n y. T h e p a r k a n d t h e l e v i s p l a z a s e e m t o memories for many local and foreign couples. This is i t s l e v e l o f p r i v a c y.

and whether or not the neighboring desirable and are hold romantic partly because of

Limited public transportation around Filbert St. restricts pedestrian flow resulting in a quiet serene ambience.

The Exercise More analysis. This exercise aims to gain as much detail on the chosen city image form. I did as thorough an analysis as I could in two days. Information obtained here, I learned, has high relations to its application a t m i s s i o n b a y. I attempted to relate all acknowledged ( and not entirely accurate ) information ( numbers ) with the experience it offered…

Learning Outcome …and I did it. G r a p h i c a l l y, I l e a r n e d t h a t t h e u s e o f “ f i l t e r i m a g i n g ” p r o v i d e s f o r a g o o d graphic to convey relations between pieces of a whole. Sectional studies helped inform of shadow patterns during extreme shadow conditions. C u m u l a t i v e l y, I a c q u i r e d n u m b e r s t h a t w e r e r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h e s e t t i n g and the experience. I now have information general enough to use not only at mission bay but also any other site in the future.

The exercise Using all knowledge and information gathered during previous exercises, we were to c reate a u top ian c ity of at least 8 lon g b loc ks in len gth . We w e r e t o i n c o r p o r a t e K e v i n L y n c h ’s C i t y I m a g e f o r m s a n d p r e s e n t t h e m u s i n g E d w a r d Tu f t e ’s p r i n c i p l e s .

Learning Outcome I l e a r n e d h o w f u n i t i s c r e a t i n g a h y p o t h e t i c a l c i t y. M y a p p r o a c h t o t h i s assignment was to create a city that accommodates and encourages diversity among communities, age groups, races and cultures. I wanted my city to stand as a symbol for acceptance , for humans to understand the importance of welcoming other humans, different from themselves, and discover ways in which it makes the world (in this case my utopian city) a far better place to live in. I wanted my city to be a slice of perfect imperfection.

I learned that my method of delivery was not as effective as I intended a n d t h a t m y m e s s a g e w a s n o t b e i n g c o n v e y e d a c c u r a t e l y. T h e s e p a r a t e n e s s o f d i s t r i c t s i n m y c i t y d i d n o t r e f l e c t t h e i d e a l s o f u n i t y a n d d i v e r s i t y. I was advised on how to make better use of color and how I could effectively implement these techniques in my following iteration.

DEFINING A UTOPIAN VISION

The exercise To p r e s e n t a c l e a r v i s i o n s t a t e m e n t . To c l a r i f y m y v i s i o n v i s u a l l y, I n e e d e d t o m o d i f y m y m e t h o d o f d e l i v e r y.

Learning Outcome In this iteration, I successfully conveyed my vision to the jury – a panel of three classmates. I realized that I strug gle with organization of ideas and that I must pay attention to work of successful presentations in order for me to achieve complete coherence. I learned that mixed -use buildings usually make areas vital due to their qualities of attracting diverse interests. These qualities reinforce my v i s i o n o f c r e a t i n g d i v e r s i t y a n d s o I i n c o r p o r a t e d t h e m i n t o m y c i t y. I learned through my analysis of Filbert St. that open developed spaces are a necessary component in urban settings. This is usually done to contrast the dense nature of built environments and pedestrians in urban cities concluding that contrasts are not only vital but also desirable. These conclusions can be added to mission bay as a response to its current, loose massing.

Conclusion These in-depth analysis exercises have reflected a growth in my ability to perform responsive designs in and out of the classroom. I am more able absorb design details, perhaps due to a development in my sensitivities. And I credit these exercises. They have an unconscious value attached to them that I am able to recognize outside the studio. I hope that the following assignments are well guided, clear, and give us the ability to apply all acquired knowledge into our final project at mission bay.
