EDITORIAl Life and Art magazine in its first edition conducts a deep
study on the most important advances in biomedical engineering and medicine in Colombia, and in the world This publication is very important for us because it is our first attempt to show the biomedical advances in our academic community, the ITM, and in our hometown Medellin; We had the opportunity to visit the HAMTI (High Advanced Medical Technology Institute) located in the neighborhood of Belen .There we tour the institute,
technologies ,and diagnosis studies performed , and finished with an interview with Dr. Simon Rascovsky coordinator of the research group of the institute who told us about high technological advances in Imaging and the progresses and hightech studies performed there as innovation that have served for diagnosis and treatment in Colombia. Finally, and perhaps the main goal of this publication is to highlight the most important issues in today´s biomedical advances, and future possibilities to provide welfare to our people. THE HUMAN EYE AMAZING
Identify natural body substances that have antimicrobial action and
produce them in large quantities in the
laboratory for use in medical treatments, it is an interesting way to develop new drugs It has now been discovered that certain proteins of the eye are able to fend off pathogens. These substances could be the basis of new antimicrobial drugs, which also would be cheaper. The team of specialists in vision that made the discovery , of the University of California in Berkeley, tested synthetic versions of these proteins, derived from cytokeratin 6A , to see the extent of their action against various pathogens . These synthetic molecules annihilated the bacteria causing strep throat and some cases of necrotizing fasciitis (Streptococcus pyogenic), diarrhea and sometimes fatal infections (Escherichia coli) and infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Cytokeratin 6A can be found in epithelial cells of the human co
cornea, and skin, hair and nails. All these areas of the body
are coconstantly exposed to microorganisms, so it is reasonable that they exexist in these additional natural defensive barriers. The problem with other small natural antimicrobial molecules id identified previous studies is that they are toxic or easily Inactivable by normal concentration of salt in out body.
RESEARCHERS TOOK THE FIRST STEP TOWARD AN ARTIFICIAL LIVER

Work, which required six months, was to remove the cells of Of a rabbit liver to convert it into a matrix capable Of receiving the implant of cells compatible with humans. Take the procedure. The method is to take the liver of a live Rabbit and empty cell (with chemical and physical agents) To leave clean organizational structure.
IN MEDELLIN INVENT A PAD THAT DETECTS DISEASE AND -PREGNANCY One of the inventions featured in the Fifth epidemiologist. Lounge Inventors and Innovators in Building Route, organized by the SAI is 'Top smart' project, presented by Alejandro Vargas medical epidemiologist. It is a pad or panty Liner daily changing its color by detecting hormones Or chemicals own wife and timely alerting of events Of interest in Public Health.
World that detects events such as pregnancy, diabetes Mellitus, urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast Infections and potentially could become a "mini-lab notebook This is an innovative product in the world with a patent Application that supports it, issued in September 2011 By the U.S. Patent Office.
VISIT TO HAMTI THE HAMTI (High Advanced Medical Technology Institute ) 多
provides diagnostic support, education and research, With a humane and highly qualified technical team, high
quality, ethics, opportunity, responsibility.
Since the 80s, examinations by MRI are considered one of the Most valuable tools for research, diagnosis and treatment of Disease, and was the Institute for Advanced Medical Technology - HAMTI - the entity that allowed the community of Northwestern Colombia access to this technology.
Since its founding on May 26, 1992, the HAMTI has performed Over 60,000 MRIs with excellent pictures and has given grants
For more than $ 3,000 million pesos to poor patients, constituting That activity as the best balance of benefit medical scientific And social HAMTI has delivered during his years of service. The Institute for Advanced Medical Technology found that Strengthening the "Research" was one of the corporate Objectives for priority action to guide the direction of what is Now the institution therefore decided to implement the Research Area in 2006, with in order to incorporate the Institution their respective lines start with a methodology And continuous improvement of research in MRI. This center specializes in diagnostic imaging of the woman body Skeletal muscle, heart and vascular
For performing MRI studies where the patient a magnet and Radio waves is entered instead of X-rays is used Through These radio waves detailed images of internal organs are Obtained, including the heart, vessels, strokes, tumors, And muscle or joint injury. Detailed images obtained with MRI allow physicians to better evaluate various parts of the Body and determine the presence of certain diseases that May not be assessed adequately with other imaging methods
HEATH MONITOR FOR SMART PHONES AND TABLETS WITH CLINICAL QUALITY The new design is a wireless sensor pocket fits a Universal plate that sticks to the back of a mobile device
Or a smartphone case. The cardiac monitor Alive or communicates with a smartphone ultrasound Sending information that captures the phone's microphone, so that the monitor does not connect with the phone via Bluetooth. The new system manages power efficiently and Consumes only 10% of the energy required for activated Bluetooth device. This device is a good choice for developing Countries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines, where It can be used with low cost Androids.
ROBOTIC LEG FOR REHABILITATION
Prosthesis’s Robotic legs tend to be more and more
Simple than artificial arms since they require a smaller Range of motion action. As legs walking follow a repetitive pattern Prostheses have traditionally designed for sensing movement Of the user and reacting to the same , not truly react amputee's Intention. Now investigators’ the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago inform us through the New England Journal of Medicine Have developed a prosthetic leg that senses electromyography Signals (EMG) of the thigh muscles innervated already or have been surgically reinnervated, to control its movement.
Leg combines the information about position and movement, the. EMG signals from there to figure out how the person wants to Move the leg . This new leg automatically adjusts to different situations, either ramps up stairs, or simply browsing a flat surface
HOW MANY HUMAN BODY PARTS
Despite a long history of fascination with the human body, Experts said, holes continue to exist in our knowledge because We are enormously complex creatures. What’s more? There’s a lot of variation from one person to the next. Reality is a far cry from the clear and colorful pictures in Reality is a far cry from the clear and colorful pictures in anatomy textbooks
But even when surgeons develop intricate knowledge about But even when surgeons develop intricate knowledge about specific parts of the body, they come to expect the unexpected. There is a muscle in the arm called the palmaris longus, for example, that is absent in about 15 percent of people. Some pepeople have the muscle in one arm but not the othe
