Black History Month, observed every February, is a time to reflect on the profound impact of Black individuals on history, culture, and society The celebration of Black history dates back to 1926, when Dr Carter G Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) initiated "Negro History Week " Woodson chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of two key figures in Black history, Abraham Lincoln, the US president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation, and Frederick Douglass, a former enslaved person who became a leading abolitionist and advocate for civil rights.
In 1975, President Gerald Ford issued a message recognizing the week and urged all Americans to “recognize the important contribution made to our nation’s life and culture by black citizens ”
In 1976, during the nation's bicentennial celebrations, the week was expanded into Black History Month, officially recognized by the U S government and embraced worldwide
The following year in 1976, ASALH extended the commemoration from a weeklong observation to an entire month.
In 1986, Congress passed Public Law 99-244, which designated February 1986 as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month ” Black History Month was officially recognized, expanding the focus to a month-long commemoration Since then, every year has had a specific theme chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which guides the focus of the celebration
Each year’s theme reflects current social issues or celebrates milestones in African American history, creating a collective moment to reflect on the journey of Black people, their culture, and the progress that has been made, while acknowledging the continued work needed to ensure equality for all.
Black History Month is not only a time of celebration but also a call to action, a reminder of the importance of preserving history and understanding the experiences of Black communities to promote unity, equity, and justice It encourages individuals of all backgrounds to reflect on the past, engage in meaningful conversations, and work together for a more inclusive future
