THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL STATED THAT CHURCHES COULD BE BUILT IN A STYLE THAT REFLECTED THE REGIONAL ARCHITECTURAL STYLE INSPITE OF INHERENT CHARACTERISTICS OR CONSTANTS THAT ARE UNAVOIDABLE IN THIS CASE OF RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS, CHURCH DESIGN HAS GONE BEYOND REGIONAL VARIATIONS AND PERIOD LANGUAGE

1

THE CASE STUDIES EXHIBIT AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF CHRISTIAN SACRED SPACE AS CONSTANT BUT THEIR INTERPRETATION OF THE REGIONAL CULTURE IS DIFFERENT IN EACH CASE

PRESETS - CASE STUDY

THE SALVACAO CHURCH RESPONDS TO CLIMATE AND THE MYTHS OF THE INDIAN MULTI-RELIGIOUS SOCIETY THE CHURCH ADOPTS MONOLYTHIC SHELLS OF CAST CONCRETE AND THE OCULUS IS CAPPED BY PAINTED GLASS WHICH ALLOWS FOR A SOFT AMBIENT ‘NUMINOUS’ LIGHTING CHARLES CORREA INCORPORATED OPEN COURTYARDS INTERMITENTLY AND BROKE UP THE CONVENTIONAL LAYOUT OF THE CHURCH.

AGK MENON IN THE VARANASI CATHEDRAL HAS INCORPORATED FEATURES SUCH AS CORBELLED ARCHES, JALI WORK OF METAL ON WINDOW OPENINGS THE CATHEDRAL ALSO ADOPTS A MANDALA PLAN ALTHOUGH THESE CONCEPTS RESPONDS STRONGLY TO THE RICH CONTEXT, IT FALLS SHORT AS THE FEATURES ADOPTED ARE SECULAR AND THE LIGHTING FROM THE CLERESTORY HAS NO IMPACT AS THE LIGHTING IS UNIFORM IN THE MAIN HALL

LAURIE BAKER IDENTIFIED THAT THE BAMBOO ROOF FORMS WERE SECULAR FEATURES BORROWED FROM FOREIGN LANDS AND INCORPORATED IT EXTENSIVELY IN HIS CONICAL FORM THE STRUCTURE RESPONDS WELL TO THE MONSOON AND TROPICAL SUN IT ALSO INCORPORATES A CHRISTIAN METAPHOR IN THE FORM OF 12 MAIN COLUMNS SUPPORTING THE STRUCTURE REPRESENTING THE 12 APOSTLES

NORTH PARAVUR, ERNAKULAM DIST., KERALA, INDIA

10.15’N, 76.23’E The town is situated at north end of Ernakulam district and bordering with Thrissur district. The Paravur Taluk lies in the flat delta region of the Periyar river and cut by several canals, which have resulted in the formation of many islands. The Kodungalloor Kayal (backwaters) and Varappuzha Kayal (backwaters) are in this taluk.

LOCATION: THE SITE IS LOCATED IN CHENDAMANGALAM, A SMALL TOWN IN PARAVUR TALUK, ERNAKULAM DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF KERALA, INDIA. IT IS ABOUT 42 KM FROM ERNAKULAM TOWN. IT HAS THREE RIVERS, SEVEN INLETS, HILLOCKS AND LARGE EXPANSES OF GREEN PLAIN. THE HILLOCKS AT KOTTAYIL KOVILAKOM ARE UNIQUE AS THE SITE OF A HINDU TEMPLE, A CHRISTIAN CHURCH, A MOSQUE AND THE REMAINS OF A JEWISH SYNAGOGUE, ARE ALL WITHIN THE PRECINCT. THE SYNAGOGUE WAS BUILT IN 1614 A.D. AND IN THE COURT BEHIND THE SYNAGOGUE; IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIND OLD JEWISH GRAVES, INCLUDING ONE OF A JEWISH WOMAN, DATED 1264 A.D. THE CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1573, ALONG WITH A SEMINARY FOR TEACHING SYRIAC. THE FIRST PRINTING PRESS IN KERALA WAS STARTED HERE. THE SEMINARY WAS DESTROYED BY TIPU SULTAN IN 1790 ON HIS WAY TO CAPTURE TRAVANCORE. THE SITE FALLS ON THE RIVER DELTA REGION OF PERIYAR AND CHALAKUDY RIVERS. HENCE, THE LAND IS VERY FERTILE LEADING TO A VIVID ARRAY OF VEGETATION AND A VIBRANT ECOSYSTEM. THE SITE IS ACCESSIBLE FROM TWO ROADS FROM THE NORTH AS WELL AS THE SOUTH-WEST SIDES. AS THE SITE IS CLOSE TO THE INLAND WATERWAYS, THERE IS ALSO A FERRY SERVICE AND A JETTY NOT MORE THAN 50 METRES AWAY FROM THE PERIMETER. SITE AREA IS 32000 SQUARE METRES. DESIGN PROCESS FORM - THE HEIGHT OF THE FORM RESPONDS TO THE NEED TO PLACE STRUCTURE AS A LANDMARK, ALSO CLIMATOLOGICALLY WITH SWEEPING SLOPED SURFACES AND COURTS TO ALLOW PASSAGE OF COOL AIR LIGHT - NUMINOUS LIGHT ALSO PREVENTS THE HARSH DIRECT GLARE OF THE TROPICAL SUN MATERIALS - INDEGENOUS MATERIALS SOURCED FROM THE SITE AND LOCALLY PROCURED

THERE IS A HUGE SCOPE FOR DEVELOPING THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE COMMUNITY THE MAJOR LAND AVAILABLE...BELONGS TO THE CHURCH OF VERAPOLY DIOSCESE WHO PROPOSED A CATHEDRAL AND SEMINARY...

THE SITE AND CONTEXT THAT DICTATED THE PARAMETERS TO ZONE FUCTIONS, HELPED CREATE CONCEPTS OF SACRED ELEMENTS AND POSED LIMITATIONS TO BUILD.

RADIAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE HALL OF THE CHURCH PROMOTES ONENESS AND FELLOWSHIP AMONG THE CONGREGATION, WHERE AS THE AXIAL LAYOUT PROMOTES THE DEITY OR THE ALTAR. THEREFORE A JUXTAPOSED LAYOUT IMBIBING THE QUALITIES OF BOTH AXIAL AND RADIAL LAYOUTS IS ADOPTED IN THIS CHURCH. THE NATURAL SLOPE OF THE SITE CREATES A PLATAEU AT THE CENTRE PROVIDING A PLACE OF DIGNITY FOR THE PLACEMENT OF THE CHURCH THIS IS FURTHUR ENHANCED BY INTERMITENTLY CREATING A SERIES OF OPENED AND CLOSED SPACES

LAYOUT & TERRAIN CHURCH LAYOUT & ORIENTATION ORIENTED NORTH-SOUTH OPENINGS LIMITED & NARROW, SCALED DOWN TO AFFORD DEEP SHADOWS AND NUMINOUS LIGHT FROM SKYLIGHT(SACRED) THE LAYOUT OF THE CHURCH WAS DECIDED BASED ON THE JUXTAPOSITIONING OF THE AXIAL AND RADIAL CONFIGURATIONS WHICH WORKED WELL WITH THE NATURAL SLOPE OF THE SITE

VARIOUS PLACE-MAKING ELEMENTS ENHANCE THE SITE AND PROVIDE AVENUES AND COURTS

THE NATURAL SLOPE OF THE SITE CREATES A PLATAEU AT THE CENTRE PROVIDING A PLACE OF DIGNITY FOR THE PLACEMENT OF THE CHURCH THIS IS FURTHUR ENHANCED BY INTERMITENTLY CREATING A SERIES OF OPENED AND CLOSED SPACES

THERE IS A HUGE SCOPE FOR DEVELOPING THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE COMMUNITY

THE AFFECTIVITY OF THE COMMUNICATION DEPENDS ON THE EASY COMPREHENSION OF THE ENCODED MESSAGES AND THEIR APPROPRIATE COMPLIANCES IN BUILT FORM.
