BRIEF AND TARGET SETTING
By doing this project you will: learn how to cut, shape and finish wood using different tools and equipment. share ideas and develop your own design idea. test your work and suggest new improved ideas. use co-ordinates to copy your idea onto a material called plywood.

Brief:- A nature conservation charity —The World Nature Organisation, WNO, has a chain of shops similar to OXFAM and Save the Children. WNO wants a new product to sell in its shops to help raise money to help protect endangered wildlife. “We believe that people should be encouraged to look after our planet. We want to sell products that will spread this idea. The first products will be message pad holders. This will encourage people to recycle paper.” Can you design and make a message pad holder for them? It needs to be suitable for scrap paper and have a wild life theme.
You must: design and make a message holder.
You should:produce at least three ideas with some labels and be accurate in your making and make sure your final work looks like your design idea.
You could:research other fundraising products and develop ideas suitable for the WNO. ADDITIONAL TARGETS

INVESTIGATING THE DESIGN PROBLEM You are to design and make a message holder. To make sure your design is successful it must: • hold at least 20 pieces of A6 scrap paper securely and attractively • have an easily recognisable wildlife theme • lie flat, and be able to be hung up.
We believe that people should be encouraged to look after our planet. We want to sell products that will spread this idea. The first products will be message pad holders. This will encourage people to recycle paper.
This list is called a Specification A Pupil task: INVESTIGATION
How many different ways can you think of to hold pieces of paper together? Without using a ruler sketch as many different methods as you can think of. Add notes and labels to explain how each method works. Add some colour too.
B Pupil task: INVESTIGATION and EVALUATION Test each method of holding paper and grade each method on the chart. At the bottom of the chart write down which method you think works best and why.
Criteria 1= poor 2 =OK 3= good Ability to grip
Ease of removal of one sheet Quantity of paper held Ease of refill

IMAGE BOARD A good way to start designing is to look at similar products or at products that are connected to the subject. If for example you were designing a computer it would be a good idea to investigate existing computers to see what they look like and how they work. If you gather lots of images together this is called an IMAGE BOARD. Collect examples of pictures and images of wildlife for example photographs of animals, clipart images, postcards, scanned images from textbooks or from web pages. Create a collage on this page to create your IMAGE BOARD.

IDEAS The WNO have a stock of square pieces of 6mm plywood (185mm by 185mm) and also a supply of dowel rods, pegs, and treasury tags. They want you to use some of these items in your design. TASK C: Design ideas. The next stage is to design some ideas for the base board. It would be easy to design a message pad for yourself. You know what your favourite animals are. However you have to design a product that other people will want to buy. You need to consider their likes and dislikes as well as your own. Draw at least 4 possible shapes for the base of your message pad based on the theme of wildlife. Keep the shapes simple—remember they will need to be easy to cut out for the base board.
D Pupil task: Show your design ideas to each member of your family. • Ask them if they can say what the animals are. • Which one would they prefer to have as a message pad holder? Make a note of their comments on this page. • Which design are you going to choose. Explain why.

DEVELOPING AN IDEA Design ideas. The next stage is to develop your ideas for the base board. It would be easy to stay with your design but an industrial practice is to seek the ideas and opinions of other designers and potential users of the product. In this task you will find out other peoples ideas on how to improve your design idea. Draw the idea you have chosen in the middle box A. You will pass your page to 4 other people and they will add their own ideas to yours.
F Pupil task:
Look at the suggestions made. Highlight the ideas that you like best. Add notes to explain why you think these ideas will improve your design.

FINAL IDEA TASK E: Draw an accurate drawing of your final design idea. Use a ruler and other drawing aids to make it as neat as you can. Remember the design has to hold A6 paper (148mm x 105mm) and be no bigger than 185mm x 185mm.

TESTING and EVALUATION H Pupil task: Complete the table below by asking your classmate what they think of your designing and making. When you are asked be honest and give your true opinion. Do not be generous to your friends and harsh to others but give the score that you consider the work deserves.
Is it well made?
Is it well finished?
How well does it support a piece of paper while writing?
Can I hang Does it have a Does it hold it up and use suitable 20 pieces of it lying wildlife theme? A6 paper? down?
J Pupil task: task: Answer Answer the the following following questions questions in in full full sentences:sentences:I Pupil 1.
How well does your own message pad measure up to the features listed in the specification?
How could you improve your score for each of the features if you were going to make the message pad again?
What additional features might improve your product? Sketch what the new message holder would look like with the improvements on the reverse of this page.
Show your design ideas to each member of your family. What do they think of your final design? Write down their comments below.
PUPIL SELF EVALUATION If you have completed all of these tasks well you will have reached Level ? . In TASK A have you shown a range of different methods of holding paper?
In TASK C have you created at least 3 different designs based on your research? In TASK D have you asked your family for their opinions and recorded their comments? In TASK G have you created a step by step plan of how to make your message board? Have you used two or more materials and components in your message holder?
Are all the edges neatly finished and smooth? Is your message holder neatly and accurately painted? Does your final message holder look like your design in TASK E? Have you used the pillar drill? Have you used a coping saw or the scroll saw? (underline the one you have used)
In TASK B have you tested and how good each method is and said which you think is best?
In TASKS C & D have you researched what people think of your designs? In TASK E have you checked that an A6 piece of paper fits onto your message holder? In TASKS H and I have you answered all the evaluation questions?
How well have you succeeded in meeting your targets?
