BRIEF AND TARGET SETTING

By doing this project you will: learn how to cut, shape and finish wood using different tools and equipment. share ideas and develop your own design idea. test your work and suggest new improved ideas. use co-ordinates to copy your idea onto a material called plywood.

Brief:- A nature conservation charity —The World Nature Organisation, WNO, has a chain of shops similar to OXFAM and Save the Children. WNO wants a new product to sell in its shops to help raise money to help protect endangered wildlife. “We believe that people should be encouraged to look after our planet. We want to sell products that will spread this idea. The first products will be message pad holders. This will encourage people to recycle paper.” Can you design and make a message pad holder for them? It needs to be suitable for scrap paper and have a wild life theme.

You must: design and make a message holder.

You should:produce at least three ideas with some labels and be accurate in your making and make sure your final work looks like your design idea.

INVESTIGATING THE DESIGN PROBLEM You are to design and make a message holder. To make sure your design is successful it must: • hold at least 20 pieces of A6 scrap paper securely and attractively • have an easily recognisable wildlife theme • lie flat, and be able to be hung up.

We believe that people should be encouraged to look after our planet. We want to sell products that will spread this idea. The first products will be message pad holders. This will encourage people to recycle paper.

This list is called a Specification A Pupil task: INVESTIGATION

How many different ways can you think of to hold pieces of paper together? Without using a ruler sketch as many different methods as you can think of. Add notes and labels to explain how each method works. Add some colour too.

IMAGE BOARD A good way to start designing is to look at similar products or at products that are connected to the subject. If for example you were designing a computer it would be a good idea to investigate existing computers to see what they look like and how they work. If you gather lots of images together this is called an IMAGE BOARD. Collect examples of pictures and images of wildlife for example photographs of animals, clipart images, postcards, scanned images from textbooks or from web pages. Create a collage on this page to create your IMAGE BOARD.

IDEAS The WNO have a stock of square pieces of 6mm plywood (185mm by 185mm) and also a supply of dowel rods, pegs, and treasury tags. They want you to use some of these items in your design. TASK C: Design ideas. The next stage is to design some ideas for the base board. It would be easy to design a message pad for yourself. You know what your favourite animals are. However you have to design a product that other people will want to buy. You need to consider their likes and dislikes as well as your own. Draw at least 4 possible shapes for the base of your message pad based on the theme of wildlife. Keep the shapes simple—remember they will need to be easy to cut out for the base board.

DEVELOPING AN IDEA Design ideas. The next stage is to develop your ideas for the base board. It would be easy to stay with your design but an industrial practice is to seek the ideas and opinions of other designers and potential users of the product. In this task you will find out other peoples ideas on how to improve your design idea. Draw the idea you have chosen in the middle box A. You will pass your page to 4 other people and they will add their own ideas to yours.
