Gold and Silver Embellished Cloth of India Vandana Bhandari Foreword by Laila Tyabji

FORTHCOMING

Textiles embellished with gold and silver have been desired and cherished across the world since Antiquity. In the Indian subcontinent, too, the use of metal to enhance the value and beauty of cloth is part of an ancient tradition. Jewelled Textiles: Gold And Silver Embellished Cloth of India presents a rich selection of a variety of textiles and dresses ornamented with precious metals—gold and silver. These luxurious and often opulent textiles have always been associated with wealth, beauty, supremacy, ceremony and divinity in the subcontinent. Gold and silver embroidery in India is remarkable for the manifold styles in which the threads are manipulated to produce results on cloth surfaces that enhance and ornament the character of the textile.

Extensively published in journals and magazines, Dr. Bhandari has authored and compiled books on Fashion and Textiles. Her works include: Celebrating Dreams: Weddings in India (1998), Textiles and Crafts of India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur (1998), the NIFT Millennium Document titled Evolving Trends in Fashion and Costume, Textiles and Jewellery of India: Traditions in Rajasthan. She has contributed articles on fashion to international encyclopaedias and books, and is involved in working with Indian crafts. She is currently a Professor in the Fashion and Textiles Department at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

FORTHCOMING

Dr. Bhandari has a Master’s Degree in Textiles and Clothing. The subject of her PhD was ‘Women’s Costume in Thar Desert’. She has studied the traditions and lifestyle of the people of Rajasthan, and has an intimate knowledge of the subject.

The raw materials, techniques of surface application, and the final effects thus created are unique to different regions in the country where the embroidery techniques are classified by the local terminology. Printing with precious metals—tinsel printing—is another technique by which metals are applied to textile surfaces. Kamdani or Badla in Lucknow, Tilla in Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Western India, Danka and Gota Patti in Rajasthan, Zardozi and Vasli in Bhopal, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Delhi and other centres in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat and Mukke Ka Kaam in Rajasthan and Gujarat and Varak from different parts of the country are described in detail in the book. These techniques are illustrated with examples of skillfully executed pieces from museums and private collections.

Hardback 254 × 324 mm 272 World

Born in Kashmir, the internationally renowned designer graduated in History from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi. He then worked in his family’s export business for a few years, learning the ropes. In 1990, he launched his label and designer line, and there has been no looking back. Rohit has held fashion shows in London, Paris, New York, Singapore, Moscow, Jakarta, Colombo, Sao Paulo, Munich, Geneva and all the major cities in India, and has dedicated spaces at prestigious stores in India, the Middle East and Europe. He has received several awards and accolades from internationally renowned publications and magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Verve and Marie Claire.

FORTHCOMING

FORTHCOMING Rohit Bal has a distinct and subtle sense of aesthetics. The designer-artist stands out for his attention to detail as he liberates art from his medium—the fabric. Village crafts in vibrant hues, traditional and sacred design philosophies of India, the transient phenomenon of the subcontinent’s urban landscape—Rohit is mindful of much of these as he interprets them in his spectacular and original idiom. Over the past 25 years, Rohit has used India’s rich surface-embellishing techniques with rare artistry, transposing and transcribing lotus blossoms, dancing and grazing peacocks, Mughal pietra dura motifs, the Chinar—denuded or in bloom—and more, on fabrics that range from crushed cotton and muslin to heavy silk. Surface & Depth records an artist’s journey through a spectrum of psychological and geographical crevasses and expanses as he plumbs the depths of a multitude of histories—personal, proximal and vicinal—to bring to the surface his understanding of beauty. Rohit Bal, acclaimed by TIME magazine as ‘India’s Master of Fabric and Fantasy’, is intensely concerned with design as an art form, drawing on history, heritage, fantasy and folklore to create masterpieces. His instinctive understanding of the fashion world reflects in his imaginative and innovative collections.

THE POWER OF YOGA

NAGA SADHUS The Untold Tales

Yamini Muthanna

Ziya Us Salam and Ran Matt Singh Mind, Body, Spirit Binding Paperback with flaps Size 229 x 229 mm Pages 192 Rights World

FORTHCOMING

The Power of Yoga explores the profound nature of yoga, not by professing ancient Sanskrit texts or philosophies, but by demystifying them and making them relevant to our time and age. While the Yoga Sutras (ancient texts) have provided us a road map to understanding the path of this science, 21 yoga sequences for modern lifestyle-related maladies make them accessible to the modern-day practitioner in a language he or she can relate to, without taking away from the authenticity of the technique. This book primarily contains a ‘Sequence Manual’ which offers customised yoga routines to aid people to cope better with their day-to-day demanding schedules. Ultimately, it seeks to bring readers closer to the deeper meaning of yoga and encourages them to explore it even further. Having studied Ashtanga Yoga with Mysore-based BNS Iyengar for over 22 years, Yamini Muthanna runs ‘Yogasthala’ a Bengaluru-based yoga school where people from all walks of life and across the globe—architects, entrepreneurs, artists, techies, CEOs, housewives, students and doctors— learn the ropes of rigorous Ashtanga Yoga. Yamini has conducted workshops at yoga studios in London, New York, Washington DC and Los Angeles. A purist who does not tamper with the techniques handed down by ancient masters, Yamini has been successful in translating the Sutras in a way that is accessible to common people. For instance, Yamini has mapped out specific yoga sequences to overcome insomnia, prepare for a big meeting, speech or presentation at work, increase creativity, overcome addictions, social anxiety, and so on. One of her missions is to spread awareness about the true nature of yoga, a way of life that ultimately brings about mental and physical transformation by working at the deepest level of our being. The proposed book is a part of this endeavour. Also a distinguished Bharatanatyam danseuse, Yamini uses her yoga skills and learnings to add to the grace and beauty of the dance form.

Why does a man give up his well-paid job with a multinational corporation to become a Naga sadhu? Naga Sadhus: The Untold Tales is a first-hand account of a sect often at the receiving end of lopsided media projection. This book explores the lesser-known facets of a sect often dismissed as a bunch of ash-smeared, knotted-hair, phallus bearers. It endeavours to bring to the fore the nearly obscured aspects of faith and spirituality in our commerce-driven times. Ziya Us Salam, a Features Editor with The Hindu since 2000, has been writing regularly on cinema. Having contributed to numerous anthologies, he is a dispassionate observer of the changing trends in Indian cinema, from the time of Alam Ara to more contemporary fare like Taare Zameen Par, A Wednesday, Gangs of Wasseypur, etc. He has served on the jury of the International Film Festival of India (Non-Feature Film, 2011) and been part of the jury for Best Writing on Cinema in 2008. Recently, he edited Housefull: The Golden Years of Hindi Cinema. His forthcoming book, Delhi: Four Shows, is to be published shortly by Om Books International.

Multiple Narratives

FORTHCOMING

For many years, the only stories told to the outside world about Nagaland, a fourth-world indigenous cultural group, centred around their love of head-hunting. But the land itself is populated by esoteric tribals collectively known as the Nagas. The tales of their respective origins are found in myths, songs and poetry, or lost to time. There are 16 major tribes and several other sub-tribes, each with a distinct dialect not comprehensible to the others. Often, the tribes are distinguished by their colourful woven shawls. Today, head-hunting does not exist. Christianity is now the dominant religion of the state. Here we bring you an incredible photo-documentary, accompanied by an authentic text which reveals a beautiful land that time forgot. BANO HARALU, a blue-blooded Naga of the Zeliang tribe, was born and brought up in Nagaland. She has worked for major television companies for several years and now divides her time between Nagaland and Kolkata. She has won the Chameli Devi award for excellence in rural reporting.

Taj Mahal: Multiple Narratives is proposed as a new perspective on the Taj Mahal and Agra. The city and its iconic monuments have often been written about exclusive of each other. Many stories from Agra form the pillars on which the Taj Mahal was built. Pleasure gardens or a dusty township of the Middle Ages, Agra has many dimensions. The book will look at global events, national events and showcase contemporary buildings and subsequent events which transformed it from a sacred personal space to part of world heritage. The book is proposed to be a broader and more accessible understanding of these stories, of Agra and the Taj Mahal. Amita Baig is a Heritage Management Consultant and represents the World Monuments Fund, a private not-for-profit organisation in New York, US, which funds major conservation of the heritage in India. She has worked extensively with the Government and non-Government sector, developing strategies to protect and conserve India’s heritage for over two decades in India and the Asian region. She worked with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage at its inception and has written extensively, over the years, on the challenges of preserving India’s heritage. Her book, Forts and Palaces of India, is the culmination of 25 years of research on the subject.

100 days. 100 cities. 25 states. 20,000 kms on the road. And one chef.

FORTHCOMING

Chef Saransh takes us on a culinary journey through rural India, meeting local foodies, learning about their cuisine, and creating meals using the tips he learned. Charming, humble and effortless, this culinary cutie brings an element of appreciation to the people he meets and the food he cooks, not taking anything for granted—neither the food, nor the location or the journey. From a roadside truck stop to India’s biggest omelettes centre, to a kitchen in Kullu—this book covers it all. Via trains, planes and autorickshaws and on the backs of various animals, Saransh is a true backpacker at heart. This book contains recipes not atypical of the Indian kitchen: images of foods, snapshots of villages and villagers, interesting ways to use locally found ingredients, humorous and touching anecdotes from his journey, and a bit of wisdom that can only be discovered through travel. Saransh Goila is best known as the host of his food-travel show, Roti Rasta Aur India, recently aired on the TV channel Food Food. He was awarded the title of India’s first Super Chef after he won Food Food Maha Challenge hosted by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Saransh has been a food enthusiast from an early age, making his first jalebi for his family at the age of 12. He continued dabbling in various renowned kitchens after graduating from the Institute of Hotel Management, while also having enrolled in the Barry John Acting School since he nurtured Bollywood dreams as well. Through the encouragement of his family, especially his mother, he was increasingly drawn to the culinary field as his passion for food grew. Saransh’s speciality is contemporary Indian food, with a varied knowledge of Italian food and bakery and confectionery as well. He is also the host of Food This Week, and participates in various culinary festivals and food workshops around the world.

One object without which an Indian kitchen can’t be called ‘Indian’ is the masala dabba or spice box that holds a world of flavours, colours and textures that form the foundation of food. Sometimes, a single spice does the trick while sometimes several spices from the box combine to form a robust blend. Here, we explore the masala dabba and its contents from a not-so-obvious point of view. What would happen, for instance, if milk masala were not added to milk but to meat or paani puri masala to something other than paani puri; or chilli flakes used in desserts? The answer is—spectacular food! This book will definitely come in handy for those looking to recreate family favourites with a touch of freshness, and will also appeal to those looking for ideas on experimentation. There are 10 recipes in every course, each one exploring a spice in a unique way.

Easy Guide to Pairing Indian Food and Wine

Everyone loves a good barbecue! The headiness of grilled food on summer picnics along the beach or the fresh coolness of autumn evenings, when coupled with wine, complete the picture. Wine not only makes for a good accompaniment to a grill but works as an excellent marinade to meats and fish. The subtleties of wine get enhanced by the smoke and work well as flavour enhancers. Besides marinades, wines go well with barbecue sauces too! Spicy, young red wines, fruity Zinfandels, hearty Beaujolais are some of the flavours that complement spicy meats and make for an excellent change to the dishes. Chenin Blanc and fine champagne too offer subtle flavours to go with fish and shellfish. The book dispels the ideology that wine is only for drinking and takes one on a journey of the unusual flavours created by using wine in food. From then, till the time he bid adieu to international cricket with a statesman-like speech, the world has changed in numerous ways.

From the Lok Sabha elections to the Orissa cyclone, the Bhuj earthquake, three cricket World Cups (1996, 99 and 2011), the Asian Games and the Hockey World Cup, Narendra Pal Singh has covered it all. Currently Creative Director with the Star India group, he has been in the media industry for more than 25 years. Starting as a reporter, he went on to become the first designated Sports Editor in a news channel in the country. NP was also one of the core people under whose guidance NDTV India was launched. MOHAMMED RAFI Voice of a Nation Sujata Dev

Shammi Kapoor was the first to take on the sacrosanct image of the holier-than-thou Bollywood Hero. His contribution, like Dilip Kumar’s, has seeped into mainstream, popular Hindi cinema to become a part of the larger tradition, which generation after generation of actors have continued to draw from. Yet, if Shammi’s talent went unacknowledged for long, it had something to do with the failure of the critics of the time to comprehend his highly individualistic style and swagger. The brazenness with which he violated the image of the conventional hero made them pass him over as a freak. But the Shammi Kapoor legacy has stood the test of time.

Born the second youngest of six sons to Hajji Ali Mohammed at Kotla Sultan Singh, a village near Amritsar in Punjab (British India), Rafi, nicknamed ‘Pheeko’, started singing by imitating the chants of a fakir in his village. In the 1920s, Rafi’s father moved to Lahore where he opened a small dhaba. Rafi started working with his elder brother Mohammed Deen at the barber shop he started in Noor Mohalla, Bhatti Gate. His brother’s friend, Abdul Hameed, spotted Rafi’s talent and encouraged him to sing. Later, he convinced his family to let Rafi move to Bombay and accompanied him, in 1944, to this city from where he would slowly win the hearts of the nation.

Shammi Kapoor: The Untold Story puts in perspective the extraordinary legacy of an actor who had made an ordinary beginning.

Mohammed Rafi: Voice of a Nation, authored by Sujata Dev, is a moving account of the life and times of the Golden Voice of India. She has hosted the Indian pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival several times on behalf of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India. She is also the recipient of the prestigious, ‘Udyog Rattan’ award.

Journalist and film critic RAUF AHMED has made his mark in mainstream print, film and television. Starting as a trainee with The Times of India, he joined The Free Press Journal as Sub-Editor in the early 1970s, rose to be Features Editor, and then Magazine Editor of The Sunday Journal. A few years later, Rauf switched to film journalism and became the founder-editor of film magazines Super (1977) and Movie (1982). He was also Editor of Filmfare. After a stint of three years in mainstream journalism as Chief of Bureau for The Asian Age, Mumbai, in the mid-90s, he moved to the electronic medium in 2000 and produced and directed several film-based shows for the Zee Network. In 2001, he became Vice-President, Programming, on Zee Cinema and Zee Music. He has recently worked as Content Advisor on a 90-minute documentary on Bollywood—Bollywood: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told.

Sujata is a Rafi fan and admirer.

Shailendra, The People’s Poet, retraces the unusual journey of Shankardas Kesarilal, popularly known as Shailendra. Starting out as an apprentice welder with the Indian Railways who wrote poetry during his free time, he was noticed by Raj Kapoor at a gathering of poets, and literally coerced by him into writing lyrics for Hindi films. He eventually ventured into film production and made Teesri Kasam, considered one of the top 10 classics of Indian cinema today. Unfortunately, Shailendra did not live to see the success of his dream project. A creative and sensitive poet, caught in a web of deceit, Shailendra was let down by the very people who were closest to him. He died prematurely at the age of 43. The book, with excerpts from his diaries (1946-1966), his random scribblings and letters to dear ones recording the crests and troughs of his life, is a son’s tribute to the father, the man, the poet, and his constant yearning to return to his roots. Dinesh K Shailendra, the youngest son of Shailendra’s five children, became a filmmaker and worked as an assistant director to directors like Basu Bhattacharya, Basu Chatterji and Pankaj Parashar in more than 15 films. He wrote the story idea of the Kamal Haasan blockbuster, Appu Raja. He has done a two-hour documentary film on Shailendra, titled Aaj Phir Jeeney Ki Tamanna Hai.

dillileaks Srishti Khanna

DilliLeaks... Yes! It’s no less than ‘sadda Wikileaks’. We shall be leaking the hedonism that makes Delhi our Dilli. A city where everyone has a heart of gold but the brains of a nutjob. This particular so-called  piece of literature in a ‘nuttier’ shell is about me and you and the crazy things we do. The gossip and the rumours spicing up our existence are the spine of this book, fed by a transfusion of undisputed facts of the existence of a true-blood socialite of Delhi. All facts I guarantee, but don’t hold me in the court of law, as I won’t name names. You see, I love my imaginary invites to the coveted city dos. I love us being technically not so single, yet single; loud, a delight for the tympanic membrane of our poor, distressed, subservient ear drums. The heights and delights of social networking to the downs and lows of pretentiousness with an unbeatable zest for life—that’s what DilliLeaks is all about. Srishti Khanna is a Punjabi middle-class lass with mentors in the avatar of social gods, and very much a part of every colourful character described in the book. Srishti grew up in this city but also lived in other cities in India, which helped her draw a few comparisons and define Dilliwalas as abnormally normal. A lady of remarkable achievements, Srishti has earned her stripes running bars and restaurants, and getting to know everyone worth knowing in this city post a few...shhhhhhh!

DELHI: ANYTHING GOES Anita Kumar

Fiction Binding Paperback Size 129 × 198 mm Pages 250 Rights World

Four friends who grew up together in Delhi in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s before moving to different continents reunite after many years in Delhi with its ever-changing landscapes. Reema, who remained in the confines of Delhi, is bitten by the high-society bug. Her other friends who moved to different continents witness a sea-change in her and during their two-week stay in Delhi, they observe and absorb what has been lost by a culture that once took pride in its traditions and values. Their realisations of what can never be recovered also awaken them not only to the truth of the dying and decaying values of Delhi but also to the hopelessly self-destructive ways of their friend Reema. This humorous and witty take on Delhi’s harsh truths is as entertaining as it is enlightening. Anita Kumar was born in the UK with a heart condition. Brought up in a traditionbound family, she was frequently hospitalised for asthma and allergic skin disorders. India seemed to be an ideal escape from these seasonal ordeals, so she married and moved to Delhi. However, the marriage soon turned into a nightmare, with the city’s inclement weather only adding to her woes—physical and psychological. That is when she found refuge in Guruji, who healed her. A well-established calligrapher and painter, her inspirational journey, Turning the Page, has touched many lives. She is also the author of The Divine Light. Delhi: Anything Goes is Anita’s debut novel.

This slim volume contains some of the better, though lesser-known, works of Amrita Pritam. Romantic and indulgent in most of her writings till the very end, her writings influenced at least two or three generations of Punjabi writers, especially young women who took to expressing their inner turmoil through engaging verse. She was often criticised by purists for her unconventional and defiant outlook and dubbed a feminist because she sought to translate the agony, the pain, the aspirations of her women protagonists, both in and out of wedlock. In many ways, the same concerns are evident in most of her poems, some of which have been included in this volume.

The lyrical prose of writer and film director Khwaja Ahmad Abbas (1984-1987) easily lends itself to the short story form. In this captivating collection, titled Sardarji and Other Stories, edited by Suresh Kohli, the protagonists of each tale are portrayed grappling with the conflicts in their minds as they try to make sense of the changing world and their relationships within a social context. The title story, Sardarji, has as its central theme religious communalism and highlights the imaginary fears that can pervade and completely take over an individual’s thought process.

Strange Longings and Other Stories paints a portrait of 21st-century India. The stories delineate a ground view of India that Indians find themselves in, which is not necessarily the India that the rest of the world ‘reads’ it to be. India today is an extremely interesting space to watch—it is a site of rapid economic progress of subSaharan levels of indigence, of political contestation and of economic and religious negotiations. And these different ‘Indias’ are intersecting in intriguing ways. Each of the short stories untangles threads of this skein. Priya Virmani is a London-based economic and political analyst. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Bristol, UK, and then specialised in Emerging Economies at Harvard University. She is the founder of ‘Paint Our World’, a humanitarian art project that works with underprivileged children.

HOW I FOUND OUT EVERYTHING ABOUT SEX Anju Kish

Self-help Binding Paperback Size 129 × 198 mm Pages 250 Rights World

The ‘birds and the bees’ conversations have always had few takers in India. We warn our children against the use of alcohol, drugs, smoking…but do not utter the word ‘sex’, which, in today’s day and age, can prove to be more dangerous than the others. This silence can lead children to source out information from peers who are equally clueless, or from the Internet, where misleading information can do a lot of harm. How I Found Out Everything About Sex tackles this hesitation of ours to talk to our children about sex and related issues. It understands the Indian parents’ point of view and offers a different perspective on the subject while gently guiding them to the other side of the fence and giving them the conviction, courage and skill required to tackle ‘The Talk’! The lucid language, interesting and rib-tickling anecdotes makes How I Found Out Everything About Sex an easy read. It is meant for parents with children of all age groups. Anju Kish is a double graduate in Law and Mass Communication, settled in Mumbai with her ad-filmmaker husband and two teenage sons. Having worked as a journalist and later as a copywriter, she has authored two non-fiction books. Her growing son’s queries led her to scrounging book shops for a kid-friendly book on sex education, but in vain. She decided to take the bull by the horns and pen one herself! Not satisfied just with her research on the subject, she did a course at the Indian Institute of Human Technology, Mumbai, and got a certification as a Sex Educator. She has been conducting puberty and sex education workshops for children since the last two years while simultaneously working on her books for parents and children.

Personal and professional coaching evolved from the older models of therapy to address the huge shift wherein the soul, which was once left out of the equation, could not be ignored anymore. A new epistemology (the branch of Philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, its presuppositions and foundations, and its extent and validity) is needed to help facilitate a reunion between our thoughts and our reality and to bring back a sense of wholeness. Deep learning, which can lead to a lasting transformation in ourselves and hence the results we create in our lives, is different from just accumulating knowledge. From the beginning of time, we have searched for answers to questions about realising our personal desires and have also been looking for enlightenment. The questions, on many levels, remain the same but online analytics show that the most searched key words are ‘finding love’, ‘making money’ and ‘buying a home’. Today, the answers we seek beg for so much more; it is not just a marriage partner we want, but one that connects with us as a friend, companion, lover and fulfils our deepest need for connection; it is not just a job we look for, but a life purpose that keeps us passionate and creative; it is not just a house we want, but a deep sense of belonging.

Malti Bhojwani

Guided writing is by far one of the most powerful daily practices to living a happy and fulfilled life. Do you believe in magic, in prayers being answered, in dreams coming true, in goals being achieved? The way to use the Brain Spa Journal is to write in it everyday, write down your goals, your desires, dreams, fantasies, wishes. You don’t need to get into too much detail unless you really want to, just write a few words that will signify this goal to you. The magic is in triggering the emotion of already having the feeling that you want this goal for. On the left section of each day’s lines, in the column called TAG, list the names of the people you are grateful to. If you are grateful for the sun or the weather, then write ‘God’, ‘Mother Nature’ or ‘Universe’. TAG stands for Thankfulness, Appreciation, Gratitude. At the start of every new month is a page with the ‘iHour’ and the Habit Forming Table. Take the time to fill it out each month and do your best to stick to your commitments. In the iHour template, fill out the activities and minutes you will spend on each. You may find that you want to change some of these habits or rituals from month to month and that is fine. The activities you list in the iHour page are the things that strengthen your connection to yourself and the Universe. The easiest way to trick yourself into vibrating positive feelings is to use your memories and your fantasies and your dreams and desires.

What sets some of us apart from the rest? Is it merely luck or being at the right place at the right time or innate talent that bestows a special status on a few select individuals? Success has been a goal for millions the world over, yet the definition of the word varies from person to person. In 40 Success Stories, experienced life coach Malti Bhojwani shares 40 stories of passion, purpose and perseverance, including ones starring Arshad Warsi, Tisca Chopra, Anupam Mittal, Jitish Kallat, Hrishikesh Kannan and Mushtaq Shiekh. She has worked with countless individuals while they have set out in pursuit of their personal and professional goals and seeks to understand the beliefs that drive ordinary men and women to achieve these heights. There is so much advice out there on what to do but Malti explores the ontology in the ‘ways of being’ in greater focus rather than the actions of these individuals, helping connect the reader to the human beings behind these success stories. This is an inspirational and motivating book from which readers can take away plenty, from whichever stories they pick as their inspiration. They will be filled with renewed faith to go out and make ‘it’ happen despite their present circumstances.

They say it is all semantics and as long as the ‘meaning’ is understood that is all that matters, but today, as an author and a professional coach who uses language as an effective tool to change the emotions and the results we get in our lives, Malti Bhojwani reconsiders this notion, and dares to suggest that the words do matter. In Brain Spa, she concentrates on helping you get immediate results in the areas that matter the most to you.

RAJ REWAL

Innovative Architecture and Tradition Essays by Kenneth Frampton, Peter Davey and Suha Ozkan Architecture/Reference Binding Hardback Size 250 x 290 mm Pages 280 `2995 Price Rights World

New

A distinguished doyen of architecture from India, Raj Rewal has set global precedents with his urban narratives of design that have been integrally and richly steeped in their contextual inferences. The concerted juxtaposition of traditional concepts and contemporary syntax is reflective of his fascination for weaving expressions of heritage and history into a modern vocabulary, often revealing layer upon layer of intuitive interpretation and deep meaning. Effortlessly threading together episodes of design, he merges scale with surroundings and geometry with rhythm, binding space with structure and nuance, modulating form and light and coursing the exterior through the interior to create a series of interconnected experiences that are as distinct as they are together. Across a repertoire of residential, housing, public and institutional buildings, his work is characterised by concern for climatic sensitivity, humane architecture and the promotion of craftsmanship and new technologies. Educated in Delhi and London, RAJ Rewal worked in Michel Ecochard’s office in Paris before initiating his practice in New Delhi in the 1960s. His building portfolio includes many prestigious landmarks such as the Nehru Pavilion, the SCOPE office complex, the Asian Games Village, the National Institute of Immunology, the Parliament Library, the Lisbon Ismaili Centre and the recently completed Visual Arts Campus in Rohtak. Rewal has been felicitated with many honours such as the Gold Medal from the Indian Institute of Architects, the Robert Mathew Award from the Commonwealth Association of Architects and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres award from the French government. Spanning over four decades, his is an architecture of ambition and hope, exploring space, form-making, structural and construction ingenuity and material possibilities, forever pushing the envelope in the defined amalgamation of tradition and innovation. Kenneth Frampton was born in the United Kingdom in 1930 and trained as an architect at the Architectural Association, School of Architecture, London. After practising for a number of years in the United Kingdom and in Israel, he served as the editor of the British magazine Architectural Design. He has taught at leading institutions including the Royal College of Art, the ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, and the Berlage Institute in The Netherlands. He is currently the Ware Professor of Architecture at the GSAPP, Columbia University, New York. He is the author of Modern Architecture and the Critical Present (1980), Studies in Tectonic Culture (1995), American Masterworks (1995), Le Corbusier (2001), Labour, Work & Architecture (2005), and an updated fourth edition of Modern Architecture: A Critical History (2007). Suha Ozkan is an architect by training and has undertaken extensive research on the theory and history of architecture, design, vernacular form and emergency housing. He taught architectural design and design theory at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, where he became Associate Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, and was later appointed Vice President of the university. In 1983, following his tenure at METU, Dr. Ozkan became Deputy Secretary General of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and served as its Secretary General from 1990 and 2006. He also has been associated with a number of awards such as the Cityscape (Dubai), Hassan Fathy (Alexandria), European Union (Barcelona), and Architecture Festival (London) prizes. He was the president of the International Union of Architects Congress between 2001 and 2005, and is an Honorary Fellow of The American Institute of Architects (2004). Since 2008, he has been Founding President of the World Architecture Community (www. worldarchitecture.org). Suha Ozkan returned to teaching at METU in 2009 and remained there till he retired in the summer of 2012. Peter Davey is an architect, critic and historian. He was Editor of the Architectural Review of London for several years. His book, Arts and Crafts of Architecture, was critically acclaimed. He has also contributed to numerous books, compendia and international magazines. In 1998, he was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Exploring India from the time of the Indus Valley Civilisation to its modern urban cities, India: A Land of Contrasts paints a vivid picture of the country’s past and present. The book makes interesting use of the country’s topography to demarcate distinct ways of Indian life, highlighting the diversity that has made it a haven for tourists from across the world. Modern India today is an amalgamation of the old and the new, where remnants of the past—palaces, forts and other age-old structures created by mighty rulers—co-exist with the hi-tech creations of India’s ambitious youth. This marriage of the old and new is an all-pervasive theme of this book, where cities and cultures, rites and rituals, livelihood and lifestyles, reflect this co-existence. With breathtaking images, the book serves as the perfect appetiser for those who would like to partake of India’s effervescence and lose themselves in her myriad offerings, even if momentarily.

Central to its fame perhaps is the tour de force performance from Hindi cinema’s foremost tragedienne, Meena Kumari, in the awardwinning role of Chhoti Bahu, a woman defiantly struggling against a life of material privilege and personal desolation. Directed by the renowned writer, Abrar Alvi, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, adapted from Bimal Mitra’s eponymous Bengali novel, Shaheb Bibi Golam, intrepidly explores the layered relationship that develops between Chhoti Bahu, a neglected, cloistered housewife, and Bhootnath, her male confidante, against the backdrop of late 19th-century feudal Calcutta (now Kolkata). The film addresses complex interpersonal relationships with subtlety and grace and throws light on the exigencies of life for those under the yoke of the zamindari system in British India.

NEW

An emotional tour de force, Kaagaz Ke Phool explores the pendulous swings in a film director’s career and its impact on his relations with his lead actress, his wife and his daughter. His precipitous decline—his creativity suffers, his films flop and he is indifferently tossed aside by his parent studio— synthesises Dutt’s observations on the evanescent nature of fame. Kaagaz Ke Phool proved eerily prescient for Guru Dutt, whose art obsessed him, fuelled him and felled him.

Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam: The Original Screenplay seeks to archive the screenplay of this seminal film. It also explores the behind-the-scenes processes of creative filmmaking through interviews with the film’s cast and crew and incorporates analytical essays from authors Dinesh Raheja and Jitendra Kothari that bring into focus Guru Dutt’s preoccupation with the themes of loss, longing and platonic friendships, and delineate his enduring fascination for bygone eras.

This book also incorporates interviews of leading lady Waheeda Rehman, assistant director Shyam Kapoor, friend Dev Anand and brother-cumcolleague Devi Dutt. Iconic cinematographer VK Murthy reveals how he crafted the film’s eloquent frames and the chiaroscurist lighting that have long fascinated cineastes.

The films made under the aegis of Guru Dutt Films Pvt. Ltd. are an ineluctable part of Hindi cinema’s belle époque and this book is part of a compendium of books on three ageless classics—Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Kaagaz Ke Phool.

CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND

DINESH RAHEJA has been writing on cinema for over 25 years. He is currently the Editor of Bollywood News Service. In his long and prolific career as a writer, he has worked as the Editor of Movie magazine (1988– 1999), been a columnist for Sunday Mid-day, Channel Editor of India Today’s online film section and has written scripts for television. Raheja has also authored two books on cinema—The Hundred Luminaries of Hindi Cinema (1996) and Indian Cinema, the Bollywood Saga (2004).

The Original Screenplay

Dinesh Raheja & Jitendra Kothari Guru Dutt’s epic romance, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), which delves into the roots of male friendship, was a huge success at the box office.

JITENDRA KOTHARI is the Deputy Editor of Bollywood News Service. A passionate film archivist and film historian, Jitendra has co-authored The Hundred Luminaries of Hindi Cinema and Indian Cinema, the Bollywood Saga with Dinesh Raheja. His career milestones include his tenure as Deputy Editor of Movie magazine, scripting the BBC TV show, Film India and a two-year stint for the film section of India Today Online.

The film’s thematic nucleus is the deep emotional connection between two friends, Aslam and Pyaare Miyan, which is put to the test when they fall in love with the same woman. Chaudhvin Ka Chand presents romantic intensity and fraternal sacrifice with heightened emotionality but also dries out the moistness with splashes of well-scripted humour. The story’s appeal is enhanced by director M Sadiq, a Bollywood veteran from the 1940s, who imbues this Lucknowi tale with the honour and tehzeeb of a bygone era. Chaudhvin Ka Chand: The Original Screenplay archives the screenplay of this film and also incorporates insightful interviews of actors Waheeda Rehman and Farida Dadi, cinematographer VK Murthy, production associate Shyam Kapoor, make-up man Baburao Pawaskar and Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya.

Guru Dutt’s films determined the trajectory of many a film artiste’s success story and his artful presentation of ideas shaped the course of Hindi films—this verity is examined in an essay by authors Dinesh Raheja and Jitendra Kothari.

NEW

Half a century after its release, the cinematic appeal of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) has not only endured but continues to grow.

Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) may well be Indian cinema’s most famous flop, but subsequent revisionist verdicts have anointed it a classic. In an essay for Kaagaz Ke Phool: The Original Screenplay, the authors deliberate on how the film’s fate ironically reflects actor-director Guru Dutt’s ever-evolving relationship with fame.

This is the story behind the story of the revolution. It is the story of the hard work that went on for months. It is the story of fun on the sets. It is the story of costume crises and art direction accidents! It is the story of how a city was constructed in three months and torn down in two weeks. It is the story of actors putting the story above themselves. It is the story of how people come together with one passion—the passion to tell the story of a revolution. This story, too, is no less than a revolution.

The shooting script is going to be published for the first time, supplemented with exclusive behind-the-scenes stills, storyboards and other visuals from the film and a foreword by writer-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and an afterword by writer Prasoon Joshi. love, that shit! Chandru Bhojwani

All Janya wants to do is survive the daily battleground that is 8th grade. She wants none of the complications that arrive with backstabbing ‘friends’, mind-boggling boys, or skipped classes. Being brought up by a single parent isn’t a cakewalk either, and investigating a certain unwelcome addition to her father’s social life is added to her rapidly expanding to-do list. The universe clearly thinks she can handle all this and more, giving her more than her fair share of teen dilemmas as well as an inexplicable superpower. But surely there must be some reason she landed up with the bizarre ability to detect liars every time they give away a fib? As if being a teenager wasn’t hard enough already…

Like a rollercoaster, relationships have their nauseating ups, downs, twists and turns. Sure, like a rollercoaster, relationships are also fun and exciting, but what happens when the ride isn’t as smooth as you thought it would be? What do you do when you want to get off but disengaging the safety harness is a lot harder than you thought?

Ishita Agarwal was born in Panchkula and has lived in a number of cities before returning close to her birthplace, Chandigarh, where she is currently studying. She spends her free time reading, playing the guitar and blasting away the bad guys in MarioKart and Legend of Zelda on her Nintendo Wii. If she could choose to be gifted with one superpower, it would be flying, as she would rather soar in the open sky than in a claustrophobic aeroplane. Apart from closed flying contraptions, she is terrified of dogs. Her writing influences include John Green, Meg Cabot and Louise Rennison. She hopes that, in the years to come, Indian teenagers will have access to a wider range of books they can identify with. Lieable is Ishita’s first published work.

A beautiful, hand-drawn deck of Indian tarot cards, The Sacred Indian Tarot: Symbols, Images and Icons from Indian Philosophy, combines the classicism of the Tarot with the aesthetic richness of Indian mythology. The book contains 22 (major arcanas) unique hand-painted cards with images taken from a rich pantheon of Indian mythology. The cards of the Tarot consist of potent archetypes rooted in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. The symbols, forms and figures used to represent them have been taken from Indian epics and scriptures and are rooted in the tenets of Hindu cosmic principles. The Sacred Indian Tarot deck is truly a collector’s item which can be used to gain a refreshing insight into love and relationships, finances, career and more. The book breaks new ground in Tarot divination, making it a wonderful tool for self-discovery. KIREN RAI’s tryst with the Tarots began around 20 years ago, when she was introduced to the craft by a famous psychic and arot reader in East Africa, where she lived in the early part of her life. Her experience with the Tarot has been wonderfully positive, empowering her and helping her connect with the most essential parts of herself. Spiritually, it played a crucial part in selecting her path over the years. She has regularly used the Tarot as a tool for exploration and divination and has done readings for friends, who look to her for a fresh understanding of a situation. She has explored various decks and found esoteric similarities in the symbols. This inspired her to put together an Indian deck of cards, replacing the traditional Tarot archetypes with Indian images and symbols. The deck took her nearly two years to complete and is a pure expression of creativity. She believes that this mosaic of Indian cards, created by upcoming Indian artists, should be shared with a broader horizon of people.

Present Day: A retired nuclear scientist is murdered. He leaves only e-mails with clues for his nephew. He and his friends follow a trail through ciphers and 2,000-year-old ruins. Pursued by powerful dark forces, caught between the secrets of the past and the intrigues of the present, can they unravel the mystery before an unspeakable horror is unleashed on the world?
