SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

PURPOSE With its mission “to develop highly qualified and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy”, the notion of sustainability is central to AIT. AIT’s vision and definition of sustainability encompasses fostering a transition towards sustainability while reflecting a balance of economic, environmental and socially responsible values through education, knowledge generation, translating knowledge into practice, and practicing those sustainability ideals in its day-to-day and strategic operations.

Therefore, AIT’s goals are to become low carbon, resource recycling, renewable energy powered, green and environmentally friendly educational hub and practicing them. This considers not only what goes in AIT but also its sustainability footprints elsewhere. To operationalize these vision and goals, AIT’s sustainability policy elaborated here provides a set of rules and guidance to integrate sustainability principles in its academic, research, administration, campus development, and engagement with stakeholders.

The AIT Sustainability Policy (ASP) is primarily aimed: ● To create a vibrant campus where students, faculty, and staff live and work in ways that are reflective of university leadership and the campus environment; ● to influence students, faculty, staff, and residents of the institute, whose future behaviors and decisions are shaped by what they learn from leadership of the institute and their campus experience; ● to transform AIT into a sustainable community by institutionalizing best practices of conserving scarce resources, improving the efficiency of campus operations through sustainability principles, complying responsibly with environmental and safety regulations through the adoption of an effective system of environmental management accountability and translating teaching and research into practice by using our campus to pilot these innovative solutions for wider replication;

● to develop AIT into a “living lab” to study research and educate on sustainability issues; ● to ensure that AIT embodies sustainability practices and student activities in the related courses and training programs, encourage sustainability related research and knowledge generation, and encourage translation of knowledge into practice through stakeholder dialogues; ● to support the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015 and other current and future initiatives of the United Nations to reduce global warming and other negative impacts of human created emissions and alterations of the biosphere.

The AIT Sustainability Policy (ASP) has been prepared consolidating previous policies and activities, AIT’s master plan for campus development, AIT green campus initiatives, and AIT’s curriculum, teaching and research, and will also provide inputs towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. These encompasses campus operation, education, research, and outreach.

The AIT Sustainability Policy (ASP) will be implemented in different areas (given in Section V.) involving various measures/activities and will be monitored and reported regularly. For each of these areas, the overall policy direction, policy goal and the policy instruments to reach the goal, the responsible entity/person, resources and monitoring/reporting mechanism will be provided.

II.

SCOPE This Sustainability policy is applicable to all faculty, staff, students, residents, contractual staff, and stakeholders (when engaged in AIT activities) at its main campus, its Bangkok city campus and its centers in the region.

III.

PROCESS, MONITORING AND REPORTING To fulfill its obligation in meeting the sustainability challenges, the institute will develop and regularly update short-, medium- and long-term plans that can be specific to an area or as a combination.

Regular monitoring of activities and review of results should be carried out and reported in the form of reports, case studies, etc., and posted in a regularly updated website along with a dashboard.

The Office of Sustainable Campus will be entrusted to design, plan, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate the activities, and will report directly to the President.

Each unit will appoint a contact person for the Office of Sustainable Campus to coordinate and liaise with.

IV.

LIVING LAB For the sustainability principles to be instilled in the students’ mind before they leave the campus, they should be made part of the activities in some form or the other (e.g. laboratory, design, innovation, implementation, assessment, etc.) preferably in the curriculum or as part of Student Union activities. In this way, what they learn (and practice) during their stay on campus will blossom and grow wherever they go.

The campus including its community may be used for AIT’s research and entrepreneurial activities as a living lab and testbed for the testing of new technologies, products or business models.

Recognizing that innovation is a continuous process of trial and error, we celebrate testing of new ideas and approaches on the campus when they succeed, and as valuable learning tools when they do not.

VI.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT AND SHARING INFORMATION The institute will publish its sustainability report annually with details of its initiatives and activities towards meeting the sustainability policy objectives.

Any matters of a sustainability nature at AIT and this policy can be raised with the Office of Sustainable Campus in the Office of Facilities & Assets Management (OFAM), as well as through relevant Student Union representatives, and/or the AIT Sustainability Club.

It requires reducing waste to landfill, increasing recycling, and managing the creation of waste.

Sustainable waste management involves waste avoidance, collecting, sorting, treating, recycling, and providing a source of energy and resources.

Annex 5 – Nature and Ecosystems (Nature and Ecosystems) Policy Statement: AIT is committed to maintaining 70% of current forest cover with multiple tree species and improving the waterways to provide a green living environment and habitats for fish and wildlife species.

AIT is committed to creating “no touch” (set aside) areas on the campus, areas that are left natural and are not touched by maintenance staff. Those areas will become habitats for various species and the area that needs to be maintained (e.g. grass cutting) will be reduced, as well as the associated carbon dioxide emissions to enhance carbon sequestration.
