Dear AISL Community, What a fantastic beginning to the 2013-2014 school year we have had! It was great to see so many smiling faces on the opening day of school. This year begins AISL’s 49th year, which means that next school year will be a major milestone year for AISL as we celebrate our 50th birthday! This year we will need to begin planning how to properly recognize 50 years of operation and service to the international and Lagos community. Welcome new students, parents and faculty to AISL. For returning AISL community members, thank you for all of the support you have shown the newcomers to our community. I know the new families and faculty appreciate your encouraging words and kind gestures. Elementary School Update Meet With M&M! Welcome back to school! It is truly a pleasure to come back and see all of you again. Everyone looks refreshed after the break. It’s obvious that the whole AISL community cares very deeply about our school. I appreciate the fact that new parents have gone out of their way to introduce themselves to me. I believe you will find the AISL community and families to be very welcoming. As you have no doubt noticed, a lot of work was done this year in preparation for your youngsters. The maintenance staff worked very hard this summer and you can tell that the AISL teachers are as enthusiastic as the students to be back in school. Even though I began this career over 30 years ago, when your children show up full of smiles in the morning it is always exciting and refreshing! We have reorganized administrative responsibilities a bit this year in order to serve you better. Mr. Donny McCoy is the Early Childhood Director (preschool-kindergarten). He brings LOTS of experience to the position. He’s very personable and will be able to help those of you have the very young students. Mr. Dan Luce, the new Middle School Principal, likewise is a great guy and a thorough professional. Of course, I am still here for you, and you are always welcome to contact me! I’d like to point out that the Elementary Back to School Night for parents is on August 28 at 6:30. After school activity sign up will happen next week before and after school. School starts promptly at 7:30 every morning and dismisses at 2:25. (Preschool and pre-k at start at 9:30.) These first days of school are just as exhilarating for the faculty as they are for the students, and the first few days have indeed been wonderful. It seems that we have had a very smooth start this year. As the year goes on, if you experience any bumps in the road, please contact the teacher right away and remember that my door is always open to you. Mr. Martin-Muth AISL Elementary School Principal

Middle School Update

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year! I am elated to be a part of the AISL community and look forward to an amazing year. For those of you who were able to be here on opening day, I hope you heard me say that I firmly believe in the human capacity to dream the future that they desire for themselves. Students come to us at the middle level as small children from an elementary school environment. We are expected to turn them into young adults who are prepared for high school in three short years. During the middle school years, we as teachers and parents have the unique opportunity to fuel their dreams and begin to guide and provide them with the tools they need to become that which their dreams dictate. My desire is that each of our students come to believe that they can become world changers. Everyone who has made a huge impact on the world began his or her journey as an infant and moved through all of the phases of development, just like everyone else. I came across a quote attributed to John Adams that said, “There are two educations. One that teaches how to make a living and one that teaches how to live. I am impressed with the group of middle level teachers I have the privilege of working with at AISL. Together we will do everything in our power to help build a strong foundation that will propel our students to become successful, productive global citizens. Thank you for the privilege of serving them. Let the dreaming begin! Dan Luce MS Principal

High School Update The faculty joins me in welcoming all new and returning HS students to AISL. We have had three great days in which students have been to all of their classes, met their teachers, and now understand the learning expectations set for them this semester. Be sure to have a read through each of the course syllabi given to your child. The syllabus details units of study, grading procedures and other important class guidelines. New faculty members have settled into life in Lagos and are now in the full swing of school at AISL. I would encourage you all to meet and greet our new HS faculty members: Ms. Sibel Gunal: IB Math Studies, Algebra 2 and Geometry Ms. Sandra Padilla: IB ab initio Spanish and Spanish 1 Ms. Savita Singhal: IB Math, Algebra 2 and Geometry Mr. Anton Pav: IB English and Drama Mr. Bob Peterman: IB Music, Band and Algebra 1 Ms. Janet Hallwood: HS Counselor I want to draw your attention to the following policies and procedures located in the HS handbook: Good Academic Standing Procedures Extra-curricular Activities and Good Academic Standing Academic Honesty Policy Attendance and Tardy Procedures Information Technology Agreement Behavior Guidelines Mr. De la Sobera and I will be discussing these policies and procedures with all students in study hall periods next week. We want to ensure that all students understand their importance and are given the opportunity to ask questions if clarification is needed. The policies and procedures help all of us at AISL live in a safe, respectful, caring, and honest community. Thank you for discussing these agreements with your child and reinforcing their importance. The ASB is planning a fun evening for HS students this coming Friday, August 23. Details will be coming home later this week. I want to thank the ASB for a fine opening assembly as well as for their efforts in providing campus tours for new students during orientation. Returning students have been very welcoming and supportive of our new ‘Eagles’ and have assisted them in finding classrooms many times over. Well done and thank you! Hopefully, you have heard by now about our wonderful IB results – 11 out of 11 IB Diplomas awarded. Congratulations to AISL’s class of 2013, the entire HS Faculty and Mr. De la Sobera! We are off to a great start! Here’s to another great year at AISL!

News & &Events News Events Le!er From " Board Students and Parents, On behalf of the AISL Board of Directors I would like to welcome you all back for another fantastic year of school. This year represents the 49th year of AISL’s existence and we have a diverse student body of over 790 children from over 50 countries.   AISL has had another excellent year. We have been informed by the International Baccalaureate Organization that we have gained our IB certification for the next five years. This combined with a stellar graduating class last year and the largest yet class of AISL Seniors is further testament to the growth and progress we have achieved.    You have undoubtedly noticed all of the great work and improvements that were accomplished over the summer. The entire campus has been repainted, many small repairs made, a new system of awnings around the campus to allow students to go from class to class without getting rained on and of course the beautiful new courtyard which was financed and organized by the PTO. I was privileged to meet all of the new teachers this week and I know that their experience and enthusiasm will be a great addition to the school.   We would like to welcome our new Middle School Principal Mr. Dan Luce and his wife Amanda to AISL for the 2013-2014 year. The transition to having a Middle School principal will make AISL that much more effective in supporting students and faculty at the MS level and Dan brings a wealth of experience to this new role.   The Board of Directors is proud to serve the school and consider our reputation as the best International School in Africa to be well deserved. We welcome your feedback on how to make the school even better and encourage you to participate in the various groups and activities at the school.   The AISL Board members wish all of you a fantastic year.   Best Regards, Mark Troy
