Things to Keep in Mind before Getting a Liver Profile Test

Introduction A liver function test includes a variety of tests which help in determining any damage

to

the

organ

due

to

liver

disorders, serious liver infection, allergic reactions to certain medications, and alcohol abuse.

Types of Liver Tests Alanine transaminase (ALT) test is one of the

most

widely

used

tests

while

conducting a full liver profile. Alongside this, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or SGOT test is also part of the liver function test. The levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, and bilirubin present in the organ are also tested during this procedure.

When is it needed? A full scan of the liver is needed by patients if they suffer from the following symptoms: •

Jaundice

Unexplained fatigue and weight loss

Collection of fluid in the abdomen

Severe diarrhoea

Abnormal bruising

Steps to prepare for a liver test Although a liver function test is a simple testing procedure which can be conducted at a reputed pathology

lab,

there

are

some

precautionary

measures to keep in mind: •

Avoid taking over-the-counter of OTC medicines for at least two days before the test is conducted.

All medications related to other conditions should also be taken after consulting with a medical practitioner.

Staying hydrated the night before helps in easy conduction of the test as blood can be drawn without any hassles.

What do the results mean? The final results of a liver function test are generally provided by a pathology lab within 8 to 12 hours. If the SGOT test shows high levels of ASL in the body, then the patient is likely to have damage in the liver and even other organs like the heart, kidneys, or brain. Moreover, extremely high levels of ASL or APL in the body would indicate that the patient is suffering from hepatitis A or B, severe damage to the liver due to extreme overdosing of OTC medicines, or collapse of the entire circulatory system.
