DESERT TECH SRS

AS SEEN ON SCREEN: DESERT TECH SRS CONTINUING HIS NEW NEW SERIES, SQUARE-EYED ‘SOFTER, STEVE TAKLE, LOOKS FOR SIGHTINGS OF THE DISTINCTIVE SRS SNIPER RIFLE ACROSS MOVIES, TV AND VIDEOGAMES. AIRSOFT CERTAINLY HAS ITS everyday heroes. Whichever category you can think of, there’s always one platform that garners the most praise from players. In the world of the sniper, that’s Tokyo Marui’s venerable VSR platform - or one of its many clones. Every time a new player asks for a sniper recommendation, you can pretty much guarantee two responses. One: buy an AEG first. Two: buy a VSR. And while that’s certainly not bad advice, maybe it’s not the best advice. Anyone that’s sunk hundreds of pounds into a VSR build will be the first to tell you that it takes a commitment of both time and money to end up

bullpup configuration, preceded by DSR-Precision’s DSR1, from Germany, in 2004. Originally designed for use with the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, the SRS is now available in calibres that include .308 Winchester and .300 Winchester Magnum, .260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47 Lapua and more besides. The wide range of compatible rounds is due to the way that the rifle is easy to convert across calibres. Desert Tech boasts that, “Operators can change the rifle length, penetration, and distance capabilities based on mission requirements… with no custom tools required!” And as you’d expect from

“IN SERIES NINE OF DISCOVERY’S “MYTHBUSTERS”, ADAM AND JAMIE BROUGHT IN US ARMY SNIPER, DAVE LIWANAG, FOR EPISODE EIGHT, “DODGE A BULLET”. THE MYTH ON TEST WAS WHETHER SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TIME TO AVOID BEING HIT AFTER SEEING THE MUZZLE FLASH FROM A SNIPER RIFLE.” with a long range weapon that’s truly effective. But what if you could buy a bolt action sniper rifle that you can take straight out of the box and into a game? That’s the niche in the market that YouTube celebrity Novritsch aimed to fill with his SSG24, although the reviews have been mixed since release. Obviously, owner’s groups on social media are a partisan affair but there seems to be a consensus that there’s a better option: Silverback’s bullpup SRS.

IN THE REAL WORLD

a 21st Century firearm, weight is kept down to just 10.5lbs thanks to the use of polymer for the body. The SRS is used by military and law enforcement agencies around the world, as well as precision shooting competitions and big game hunters. It was first put into service by former Soviet republic state, the Republic of Georgia in 2008 before being awarded the US Army contract for a Configurable Extended Range Sniper Rifle (CERSR) in 2010. Since then, it’s been adopted by forces around the world, including Thailand’s Police, the Saudi Royal Guard, Lithuianian Armed Forces, the Czech Ministry of Defense and the Ukraine State Guard. The SRS is also currently used across America by various law enforcement and state security agencies.
