Established in 1974, Parkhill is a hardworking family firm with a proud history and a commitment to providing its customers with the best products and services. Barry discusses how the centre aims to provide something for everyone.

“Stocking a vast range of specialist grown quality plants, here at Parkhill we have something for every garden and every location with onhand, professional advice and knowledgeable colleagues. We offer professional and experienced gardening advice to a loyal, customer base and a growing number of younger enthusiastic gardeners. With a relaxing waitress service at Seasons Coffee Shop, we are often told and are believed to be the best in Scotland, and as such customers come from Aberdeenshire and beyond to sample our excellent hospitality and explore our cavernous store and the wonders it holds.

“In todays market, there is a growing demand for new and unusual plants. There is not the same sentimental value placed on plants today, it is more of a throwaway society. “Instant gardening” is developing more with our ‘disposable society’ however we feel there is a hunger for more DIY in this area and seek to promote and develop this.

“Fundamentally, our mission is to be the best garden centre and coffee shop backed up by professional and knowledgeable colleagues always on hand to assist. Colleague training and customer liaison are paramount to extolling our virtues. Continuing to support local charities with our fund raising and

Having operated for over 43 years, Parkhill and its team have a strong understanding of both the gardening industry and the local market, which Barry is proud to share with us.

“Additionally, over the last two years we have been impacted upon by a new motorway and overbridge adjacent to, two of our boundaries. There has been road closure and traffic delays during this time including long traffic diversion for up to 5 months at a time. We feel fortunate to have survived such a handicap to our otherwise thriving business.” Central to Parkhill’s success over the years is the dedication of its staff, all of whom are treated as family and work together to ensure the centre’s continued success, as Barry is eager to emphasise.

“As a family owned business, we encourage our colleagues to feel part of the family, therefore instilling a pride in the business and extending the family ethos to care for our customers as we would ourselves. When contemplating our products, we always ask ourselves if we would purchase it for our own gardens. If any colleague did not want to buy a particular plant because of its reduced quality, then it is destroyed. Quality is vital and we pride ourselves on never offering sub-par products to our clients. “Therefore, we test everything we sell ourselves to ensure that we can make appropriate recommendations to our customers. For example, we do not accept compost manufactures claims of their composts being the best; instead we run in-house trials and get composts analysed for suitability to purpose ensuring we have the very best composts for our valued customers’ varied needs. “In addition, we also create a number of products to ensure excellence for our clients. Alongside stocking a wide range of readymade garden bird foods, at Parkhill we have two specific own brand recipes especially mixed for North East Scotland conditions. We are here to educate and develop our customers knowledge

and abilities to give them the confidence to garden well into the future.” Looking ahead, Parkhill is set to grow even further, as Barry highlights the centre’s plans for expansion to provide customers with an even wider selection and more support.

This is to Certify:

“On completion of the new overbridge and motorway adjacent to us we are looking forward to bringing to fruition our plans, to expand our site and facilities whilst maintaining the plant excellence we have worked for over 40 years to achieve. Our knowledgeable colleagues and future training programs will enhance our existing standards within the Garden Centre and Coffee Shop. Our vision for a forward-thinking business is setting, not following, the trends for other Garden Centres which should maintain this business for another 40 years. We strive to be an innovative Garden Centre set apart from the rest through goods, facilities and service.”

Fitness & Wellbeing Training Ltd is a client focused fitness coaching business based in Edinburgh. We caught up with the Owner/ Tutor Phil Calvert to find out more and to explore the secrets behind the firm’s success. Fitness & Wellbeing Training offers its services across Scotland, supporting a wide range of Clients and helping them feel better through exercise, as Phil explains.

“Fitness & Wellbeing Training is a small company that focuses on our client’s goals and not our own. Both Neil Hunter and myself support all of our clients on a variety of issues, including those recovering from illnesses through to those who simply wish to get leaner, or fitter. We work out of all the Edinburgh Leisure gyms and also provide a Work out at home service for our clients in the comfort own homes if they feel that the gym is not appropriate.” Drawing on more than 25 year’s experience between them in personal training, Phil and Neil have a strong knowledge of the trends within the market, which they are keen to share with us.

“Within the wider personal training market, it is getting harder to find locations to work out of for independent trainers and a lot of trainers with good potential are having to leave the industry as their income is squeezed by being employed trainers of larger chain operators. This is a National issue. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to sustain a healthy business in this industry.

“In Scotland in particular it is tough to be a personal trainer. In England trainers that hold Level 3 Exercise referral qualification ‘the same as the Scottish trainers’! can work with GP practices to help support with an array of illnesses like Depression and Obesity issues. This still has not come through in Scotland although there is a great need for this resource to assist the NHS in this country. Moving forward this is something that I would like to see change about the so that we can better support clients.” This focus on driving change in the industry is something Phil is very passionate about, as he emphasises in his concluding comments.

As such, I am seeking to obtain a Master degree in Diabetes to help achieve this aim. By the middle of 2018 Fitness & Wellbeing Training will be recruiting a new member of the team and we all will hold Tutor and assessor qualifications. We now hold Level 4 exercise management for Obesity and Diabetes management to arm ourselves with the education to help stave off this growing epidemic.”

Marine Established in 2002, by Bonnie Lowson, Managing Director, who had developed skills from an early age in the shipyards, Clyde Corrosion Control Ltd builds on these capabilities with a variety of projects both large and small. Since inception, the business has flourished and quickly developed expertise in the coating process both blasting and sophisticated coating systems. Together, the in-house facilities and on-site capabilities blossomed through drive and enthusiasm provided by Bonnie and her loyal team, who nurtured their expertise through a series of ever more demanding projects to become the biggest blasting and painting company in Scotland’s central belt. To accommodate this, the firm now operates out of two paint halls with a floor area of 36000sqft in each bay. Thanks to this development CCC are now processing 50 tonnes of steel per day, enabling the company to pitch for more lucrative business across new and existing markets. Turnover has risen by 15% rise so far and headcount has increased from 8 – 12 people, including Bonnie’s sons, 17-yearold Sean and 21-year-old Jamie, who are learning the business from base level.
