Fine Jewellery Designer of the Year 2017 - West Central London

Mara Hotung Jewels Mara Hotung Jewels is an independent jewellery consultant and gemmologist bringing knowledge and insight to the world of fine jewellery and gems. We invited Mara herself to talk us through her creations and how she achieves excellence for every client she works with. Mara Hotung Jewels designs and creates stunning pieces of jewellery using ethically sourced gems from reputable suppliers. Mara explains her background and how she came to undertake her current role.

“My fascination with gems and jewellery began more than 36 years ago, when my mother presented me with 16 marquise-shaped diamonds. Rather than keep the diamonds for myself, I designed a pair of cluster earrings for her to wear, on the condition that it be known that I designed them. “Over the years I continued to sketch and design, often taking my mother’s out-of-date jewels and remaking them into classic, yet contemporary, pieces. Soon my friends took note and what was an obsession became a professional passion. “Later, I trained as a gemmologist and had positions at Sotheby’s and Van Cleef & Arpels in Hong Kong. In 2007, I set up my own company, Creative Jewel Ltd in Hong Kong, designing bespoke pieces and sourcing gemstones for private clients. In 2009, I moved to London and continued creating fine jewellery under the name Mara Hotung Jewels.”

I often work with clients who are looking to have a piece commissioned. I no longer draw, but I provide drawings or CAD. I see the piece made from start to finish and if it is not up to my standard, it goes back to the atelier. Each piece has to be perfect and the client has to be happy. I also source stones for clients and I recently passed my jewellery valuation exam. Previously I undertook work for Sotheby’s in Hong Kong and was one of the jewellery specialist and therefore valuation was part of my job. However, now I can value for insurance and probate, not just for auction.” Overall, the future looks bright for Mara Hotung Jewels, as Mara aims to continue offering a boutique service and creating stunning pieces that will stand the test of time, as she proudly concludes.

“Recently I have just finished creating a luxury candle and diffuser range that is gem related. I selected the six big gems, diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, jade and pearl and created scents that reflect each gem. For example, jade has hints of sandalwood and the pearl fragrance is fresh and crisp like the sea. This project was exciting and I look forward to undertaking many more in the future.”

Since inception, the business has blossomed thanks to Mara’s commitment and skills. She discusses her work in more detail and the design and creation process.

“Here at Mara Hotung Jewels, I create beautiful pieces of jewellery, which are either one of a kind designs or private commissions. Many of my creations play on unusual stones and use vibrant colour gems. I like to design classic, timeless pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. I also enjoy creating pieces that can be worn in different ways. For example, I designed a long chalcedony necklace that can be converted into a choker and bracelet. I like to think that my work is versatile, fun and unique. “The process varies, as sometimes I will own a stone for many years before I have the inspiration to create something from it. On other occasions, I know immediately what to do with it. I try and find
