MOST INFLUENTIAL BUSINESSWOMAN IN SCIENCE AND TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE 2016 – USA & INNOVATION AWARD FOR BEST NANO BIOSENSOR: BRODERICK PROBE®
THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Company: The City University of New York School of Medicine Name: Patricia Ann Broderick Ph.D Address: 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031 Phone: 212-650-5479 Email: email@example.com Website: www.ccny.cuny.edu/csom
Patricia Ann Broderick Ph.D is a Medical Professor at The City University of New York (CUNY) School of Medicine, where she works researching miniature biosensors and has developed the revolutionary BRODERICK PROBE®. We invited Patricia to talk us through her work and how it is changing the face of Translational Medicine for the better. Since 1847, The City College of New York has provided low-cost, high-quality education for New Yorkers in a wide variety of disciplines. The University is home to Patricia Broderick and her team, who specialise in creating innovative biosensors which change the way the scientific world views the brain. These miniature biosensors are designed for the detection of neurotransmitters and other biologically active compounds such as ascorbic acid, peptides, precursors and metabolites. Named after Patricia’s father, the BRODERICK PROBE® biosensors allow the study of dynamic changes in neurotransmitters in vivo and in real time, on line with behavioral models as well as on line Neuromolecular Imaging (NMI) with biosensors with cerebral blood flow
studies of stroke in animal models. In addition, studies of cocaine, caffeine, hypoxia, calcium channel blockers, hypotension and nitroglycerin are underway. Ongoing significant advances have been made with these biosensors in human studies in epilepsy patients beginning in 2008 during intraoperative diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy with Internal Review Board Approval, NYU, Tisch Hospital, New York. Patricia, whose impressive education includes Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College, a Master of Science Degree in Biology from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from St. John’s University, is keen to outline how the probe, the result of over 40 years’ worth of hard work and commitment, is changing the way the brain is viewed
throughout the scientific world. “When I first entered into medicine the only way that we could view the brain was using a dead specimen; either a lab animal which had been sacrificed for the purpose or a patient whose family consented to us using their brain to study. I have always wanted to create a probe which would be able to go beyond this and allow us to see a living brain without causing any harm to the patient or animal. “After many years of hard work and dedication the probe is now a success. It has already been successfully used in animal and patient trials, and this new technology will change lives, as we are now able to view a brain with
a living complex neurological disease such as Parkinson’s, alongside a living heathy brain, and through this we can compare the neural transmitters and explore how these diseases actually form, which will in turn give us an insight into how to cure them.” The probe has now been proved successful for use on living animals of all species. We are going to study plants and this work is in progress. The other work in humans and animals is successfully accomplished and continues. The technology, which is smaller than a human hair, is most notable because it does not cause any damage to the brain at all and is able to video track live neurotransmitter signals on line, in real time in the natural state as well as diseased state for direct comparison of probable causal issues for neurodegeneration. In doing so, they enable personalized medicines for such brain diseases as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, strokes and epilepsy. This sleek carbon-based biosensor is truly pioneering, as it is the first to fuse electrical and chemical processes with the biochemical images of the brain, and is a fantastic technological advance in the study of the human brain. The biosensor enables a paradigmatic shift in the study of mind/ body, brain/ behavior relationships, and allows neuronal insights which were previously entirely unattainable. Other core focuses of Patricia’s studies include pharmacotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of cocaine abuse, caffeine mechanisms, pain, affective disorders, epilepsy, tumors, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, post-operative cognitive diseases, drug addiction, oxidative stress, inflammation, cytokines, hypertension, hypoxia, calcium channel blockers, nitroglycerin, ascorbic acid, peptides, stress, enkephalins, dynorphin, morphine, diabetes, FawnHooded animal models and ChediakHigashi Syndrome. Alongside her work on the probe, Patricia also teaches over 200 undergraduates, Physician Assistants and medical students, sits on various
editorial boards and contributes to numerous journals and academic sources in order to provide the wider scientific community with insight into her vast knowledge and experience. Earlier this year her achievements earned her recognition from the International Association of Who’s Who for exemplary achievements in the field of medicine. Despite working so incredibly hard, Patricia is keen to emphasise that her passion is her driving force and therefore she enjoys every aspect of her various roles. “Many of my students comment that my work always seems so ‘effortless’, and in a manner of speaking it is; I am truly dedicated to my goals, and I enjoy everything I do, therefore it never feels like a chore. I have taught myself a great many new skills over the years, including how to perform neural surgery, and I take great pride in my work. Passion and hard work are the reasons for my success and I have enjoyed every moment of my career.” Ultimately, Patricia’s goal was to bring together the various scientific disciplines necessary to create this unique technology (sensory medicine, neurology, electronics, nano-engineering etc.), ensuring that they work together to reap the benefits of the new knowledge the probe will allow them access to, as she excitedly concludes. “Fundamentally my legacy, which I am incredibly proud of, is that I have bought together various scientific disciplines, working with journals and experts from across the scientific world in order to produce the BRODERICK PROBE® technology. I have gained a number of new skills along the way and it has been a fantastic journey. “Looking to the future, we have a number of patents currently going through which will allow us to advance this solution further, and we have recently received $300,000 from the Indian Angel Network which will help us to explore new and exciting ways to implement the technology. The probe
is being produced by my company Eazysense Nanotechnologies Inc. in conjunction with CUNY’s Technology Commercialization Office, and my laboratory is developing new pioneering treatment strategies for neurodegenerative diseases as well as disorders in the field of biological psychiatry. This will remain my ongoing focus as we seek to make this one-of-a-kind brain nanobiosensor accessible for healthcare professionals and students around the world.”

In terms of major developments, QBS is continuously looking for ways to innovate and streamline our business to make things easier for all parties. In 2016 we rolled out a new onboarding program and we will continue to bring on new systems that utilize technology in order to benefit our clients. “Within the wider corporate market, we must continue to focus on the development of strong mentorship programs at all levels. We have the opportunity to work closely with our nation’s youth – the future of this country and the business economy – to provide them with invaluable experience and arm them with the tools to be successful. I also believe that providing mentorship opportunities among new and established female entrepreneurs allows us to work collaboratively and cooperatively, creating mutual benefits for all parties. In a world where women are helping and supporting other women, we become stronger together and raise the bar for all business leaders, regardless of gender.”

Founded in 1960, AGUIRRE RODEN has spent decades developing the experience, knowledge, skills and processes required to fully help their clients achieve their mission. Brenda Spinelli told us about how she has embraced being female in such a male dominant industry and her plans for the future of the firm. AGUIRRE RODEN’s goal is to deliver services for the design and construction of projects that are aesthetically pleasing, functional, easy to build, friendly to use, and economical to own and operate. They like to be seen as an extension of their client’s staff and be driven by their results, remaining motivated by their ‘Can Do Spirit That Gets The Job Done®’. The firm is unique, as they have three business units (design, construction and program management), that allow them to lean on each other’s strengths, and provide support for weaker areas. Pedro Aguirre, founder and CEO of AGUIRRE RODEN, says that those individuals that are not traditionally viewed as leaders in the construction
industry get measured with a ’13-inch ruler’, which is something that Brenda has found prevalent in the industry.
industry will evolve, so that it no longer matters whether you are male and female.
“I have always been aware that as a woman in this industry, I must sometimes prove myself before being given any credibility. I embrace this challenge, and have demonstrated by my project leadership, my development of lasting client relationships and my advancement within our company that females are not limited to stereotypical administrative roles within the construction industry. As a member of the AGUIRRE RODEN senior management team, I take an active role in shaping the direction of the future of the company.”
“I would like us to reach the stage where we can accept that one’s ability to perform their job is not dependent on their gender, and where we accept those that work alongside us, encourage them and bring out the best in them. My own personal goals are to continue to grow and learn, in order to keep up with our ever changing world. I would also like to continue to see growth in our firm in all three of our businesses, and to mentor our staff to prepare them to take senior management roles and lead this company when I am ready to sit back and retire.”

WOMAN-OWNED LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FIRM OF THE YEAR Chrysalis Coaching & Consulting specializes in leadership development with a focus on executive coaching. We spoke to Founder and President Karen Carmody to learn more about her company, services, and industry trends. Chrysalis Coaching & Consulting is a certified women-owned business offering a full-suite of leadership development and talent management services. The company’s specialties include executive coaching, leadership development programs, and organizational effectiveness consulting. Chrysalis specializes in helping clients lead, manage, and navigate change and transition. The company’s mission is to empower executives, emerging leaders, and entrepreneurs to unlock their full potential and achieve sustainable changes in their lives, teams, and organizations. Think of us as your personal trainer for the corporate world. Chrysalis partners with organizations that understand people are their most valuable asset. These companies know the importance of leadership development to maintain a competitive advantage. Chrysalis’s clients are high-potential leaders who seek accelerated development for career advancement. “No one is born with all the abilities needed to thrive in today’s complex and evolving business world,” said Carmody. “Frequently it’s a matter of helping already successful individuals unlock latent talents and abilities.” Chrysalis helps clients develop improved
self-awareness, enhance their strengths, identify blind spots, and uncover derailing behaviors that prevent career progression. There are a wide range of reasons leaders engage with an executive coach. Carmody cited some common scenarios including seeking a promotion, leading a new team, transitioning to a people manager, and a desire to increase emotional intelligence, develop better relationships, and/or enhance executive presence. The inspiration for the company’s name is the caterpillar’s transformation process to a butterfly. A chrysalis (ˈkri-sa-lis’) is a protective covering, a sheltered stage of being or growth, and a preparatory or transitional state. Executive coaching serves as support for clients to recognize their potential, embrace what’s possible, and emerge from their own chrysalis. Carmody shared, “The symbolism resonates with clients because everyone can relate to being in a metaphorical chrysalis during a significant change.” No stranger to change and transition, Carmody jokes that she’s been every one of her clients. “I’ve been a high-potential corporate leader, job changer, career shifter, new manager, and entrepreneur,” said Carmody. She believes the depth and breadth of her diverse experience
are assets. Clients often seek a coach who can relate to their situation and have similar experience successfully navigating their own transitions. Carmody explained that recent surveys place leadership development at the top of the human capital agenda. Companies are seeing an accelerated demand for leadership at all levels, especially among Millennials. As the market for high-skill talent further tightens, com¬panies realize they cannot simply recruit all the talent they need, but must develop it internally. “In today’s competitive business environment, companies must continuously develop leaders who are skilled at engaging employees, implementing growth strategies, driving innovation, and retaining customers,” said Carmody. “Organizations that fail to continuously invest in their future leaders could lag behind their competition.” While leadership has increased in importance, the capability gap is widening. Chrysalis is poised to continue successfully helping organizations develop the leaders of today and tomorrow.

Heidelberg Distributing is a beer and wine distributor in Ohio and Kentucky specializing in bringing local stores products from around the world. Chief of Staff Kathryn Oakes offers her insight into the firm and how it has come to achieve its current success. Heidelberg Distributing currently represents over 740 brewers, vitners and distillers, selling and delivering to grocery stores, restaurants and convenience stores throughout Ohio and Kentucky with over 18,000 beverages. Kathryn, who began her career with the firm in 2005 as a Marketing Intern, has since risen to be the firm’s Chief of Staff, a role she undertook in 2011. She talks us through her role in the firm and how constant learning and developing has helped her to adapt and better support the company. “Here at Heidelberg Distributing my responsibilities as Chief of Staff include overseeing the corporate communications committee, manging the employee online store, working with nine general managers and eleven directors on special projects and corporate alignment, organizing senior leadership meetings and events, and building associate engagement. “Because
experience has been with Heidelberg I am continually learning about what our associates need or want, how the industry is changing, how to stay relevant in the social media era among other things. Through my involvement in the community I also take best practices from others and see how they can fit within Heidelberg.” For women, Kathryn believes that the key challenge is maintaining a worklife balance, particularly for mothers. “As an associate I want to do my best work and be a valued part of the company. As a mother, I want to be there for my kids and their activities. Sometimes these priorities overlap so time management and organizational skills are essential.” “Working in such a male dominated field I know from experience that women who want to succeed need to be strong and creative. My advice would be to speak up, be proactive
as opposed to reactive and to make sure you maintain your passion.” Moving forward, Kathryn would like to see more companies embrace women for leadership positions while considering alternative work schedules for working mothers. Women bring a special dynamic to the work place and will continue to change the landscape as long as companies are open to their success. With regards to her firm, the future looks set to be an exciting time for Heidelberg, as Kathryn emphasises. “Ultimately, the future looks bright for Heidelberg. We continue to stay involved with the legislature that could affect our business; we are looking for ways to streamline the business and make smart financial decisions; we stay on top of the industry with new and emerging brands and suppliers; and we continue to improve the workplace for our associates.”
BEST FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR 2016 - GREATER NEW YORK & MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMAN IN LANGUAGE SERVICES - USA
LM LANGUAGE SERVICES
Company: LM Language Services Name: Veronica Mehno Email: email@example.com Web Address: www.lmlanguageservices.com Address: 103 Carnegie Centre, Suite # 300 Princeton, NJ 08540 Telephone: 917-319-9932
LM Language Services is a translation and interpretation company, that caters to corporations, non-profit corporations and the healthcare industry. It was founded by Veronica Mehno in 2009 following her decision to switch from her career in the financial industry; she told us more about how she prepared for a career in language services and the success of LMLS. Prior to founding LMLS, Veronica worked in the financial industry. She credits this with the development of her good work ethic, her skill in providing outstanding customer service and the ability to understand the relationship between cost and quality. “The pressure was always on when I worked in finance, so I was always motivated to be the best I could be, and I have carried this into my work at LMLS. My previous field was very male dominant, which stands in contrast to the translations and interpretations field which I now work in; 75% of my employees at LMLS are women. For women looking to succeed in this industry, I would suggest getting certified by ATA or by the Court, as just being bilingual does not make you an interpreter or translator.
“It is not easy to juggle work, motherhood and being an entrepreneur, but I am very lucky because my husband is very supportive of me and my dreams. I don’t think that the corporate environment allows that for women in the whole currently. Childcare is a huge expense, and is not realistically affordable for everyone. I believe that paid maternity leave should be a requirement in every corporation, at least for the first three months.” The future looks very bright for LM Language Services. They have just won a contract as subcontractors for being MWBE certified in NYS, and that will bring them a huge amount of capital to allow for growth and expansion. Veronica sees only a positive future ahead.
“I have been very diligent and goal oriented throughout my career; I have failed a lot of times, but the important thing is to keep going and never give up. I am blessed because I love what I do, and when you are blessed in that way, things fall into place. Just last week, I was hired to do the interpretation for the President of Egypt and the President of Honduras during the UN Conference in New York, which was an unbelievable honour! I have also interpreted for Mayor Bloomberg, Sir Richard Branson, and Joseph Stieglitz, who has a Nobel Prize for economics – this is incredibly rewarding for me on a personal and professional level, and I look forward to continuing with this in the future.”

First and foremost, we want to deliver high quality education that helps partners, resellers, dealers, agents, franchisees and employees improve their performance on-the-job. These online training programs are different from the way we learned in school. It is not about memorization and tests, but rather a very lean, job-oriented, visual and interactive solution. Our goal is to allow learners to practice on-the-job performance in a safe environment before they need to perform tasks on the job. This saves money because it reduces errors and downtime. We want to minimize learning time, and get people back to work, doing their job better than they did before. If we improve performance, it will improve bottom line results for our customers.” BlueStreak Learning utilizes their eLearning and human performance improvement expertise to develop innovative eLearning programs that improve their client’s efficiency and effectiveness. “BlueStreak Learning has been in business for 13 years, and is stable and profitable, with loyal clients and workers who are skilled at providing clients with the eLearning solutions they need. The next stage is growth, with a focus on marketing, the latest learning technologies and new client acquisition. We want to build off our success and use it to help additional clients succeed with their eLearning programs. “Additionally, we would like to move into doing more work with new technologies. Before starting BlueStreak Learning, I always worked at the cutting edge of learning technologies, such as virtual reality and simulation-based learning, and I am keen to expand the business in that direction. As the original Rapid eLearning expert, I am able to develop high quality courses faster than my competitors, and am looking to use new technologies to meet the ever changing learning needs in the marketplace. It is a riskier space than the Rapid eLearning programs that we have become renowned for because there are more unknowns and it’s not as easy to scope and predict. Now that the company has a solid foundation, we should be able to take on innovative projects and I am excited to start working in this area again.”
