Residential Architects of the Year 2017 North West England JDA Architects are a Liverpool and Manchester based team of architects, master planners, interior designers and technicians providing architectural design services to private and public clients across the UK. We profiled the practice to find out what makes it so successful and attractive to clients. JDA offers clients a full range of services from sketch schemes to full planning applications, Building Control drawings, detailed design work and site inspections. Other in-house services include master planning, interior design and 3D visualisations. Clients range from high net-worth individuals and sports celebrities wanting one-off houses in the countryside, to private housing developers with 8 to 800-unit housing sites and social care clients offering rental and shared ownership homes and retirement apartments across the UK. Their private one-off houses provide support for unique houses in the greenbelt. New house building in the greenbelt is usually frowned upon, however planning policy does allow new homes to be built in the countryside, including greenbelt. JDA are also working with specialist consultants on larger masterplan schemes for housing in the greenbelt and have two large sites in the North West for circa 4-500 homes and a school. They are also working on the detailed design of an approved masterplan for circa 800 homes at “Harry Stoke” near Bristol,

which includes a community centre with retail facilities, recycling areas and children’s nursery. Outstanding Design & Modular Design To evidence the outstanding designs, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) review process supplements the planning application. JDA have obtained numerous approvals in the greenbelt, with two projects currently under construction. Whilst the practice offers traditionally constructed designs, one of their specialisms is true volumetric modular housing for the social housing sector. Along with Developer Bowsall, the practice has designed and built three modular sites across the North West; Liverpool, Tameside and Stockport with homes constructed in factory conditions, complete with bathrooms, kitchens, wall and floor finishes installed and erected on-site in a matter of days. The Government are pushing for more houses to be built quickly and JDA see modular off-site construction as a way to meet these aims. The company

are also providing designs for retirement living across the UK from over 55s extra care apartments to specialist dementia care homes. HAPPI Carehomes They recently completed a Housing the Aged Population: Panel for Innovation (HAPPI) care home for St Vincent’s Housing Association at Danesmoor Drive, Bury. HAPPI research found that the time may come to build homes that meet the needs and aspirations of older people and that housing for older people should become an exemplar for mainstream housing meeting higher design standards for space and quality. Due to the success of Danesmoor Drive, JDA Architects have been re-commissioned to provide a similar 19-unit care home at Elker Lane, Billington. Sustainable Design Leaning towards sustainable building designs, the practice is committed to encouraging clients towards the use of environmentally friendly building practices and the use of sustainable materials. The

practice has designed homes to meet code for sustainable homes standards, including nine categories of sustainable design, including energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water runoff, waste and pollution. Alongside all these categories, the practice has met standards in health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Currently, the practice are working on a Passivhaus principle barn conversion. The approach is to design a home that has an excellent thermal performance, exceptional air-tightness with mechanical ventilation. This robust approach to the design to minimise heating demand and in some circumstances only specify a heated towel rail as a means of heating the home. With Staveleigh being a barn conversion, it is not possible to meet all the Passivhaus principles, for example, orientation of the building for the best solar heating results, the EnerPHit standards were used. This is certified as Quality Approved Energy retrofit with Passivhaus Component. The EnerPHit standard requires an annual space heating standard demand of 24kwh/m2 and air

tight to 0.5 air-changes per hour. Once completed, Staveleigh will provide the home owner with an extremely energy efficient home for the future.

g “One off” CABE Outstanding house in the greenbelt”

Design Principles JDA are committed to thoughtful and rigorous design and planning principles, with a focus on collaborative process. They encourage openness to new ideas, energy efficiency and creative interpretation. They believe that great design can have a positive effect on resident’s daily lives from site design to architectural detail. The practice encourages open communication ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget. They are committed to reviewing and improving the design process and return to projects wherever possible to see them in use. All learning is shared throughout the practice through their RIBA monitored CPD (Continual Professional Development). JDA have been awarded the international standard certification for quality management ISO 9001: 2008 and Environmental Management ISO 14001: 2004.

Ultimately, with their unique volumetric housing, environmentally friendly buildings and ability to offer one-off house designs in the greenbelt, JDA believe they are unique against their competitors. We spoke to Paul Goldstein to try and discover more about the company and what services it provides to attract clients. Staff at Climachill pride themselves on providing honest advice to clients and clearly explaining what can and cannot be done in regard to projects; fully explaining how the team will complete the task, as well as aiming to give as much information as the client requests and proving the firm’s competence through its industry qualifications. Paul outlines the firm’s overall mission to us, as well as discussing the firm’s recent projects, highlighting the importance of client relationships to the company. “Fundamentally, our mission is to continually provide the best service that we can and to treat our customers the way that we would like to be treated. One of our most recent projects was installing air conditioning into the offices of Furniture Village’s National Distribution Centre in Milton Keynes. It was a ‘live office’ and our works had to be done out of hours so as to have minimal impact on the work of our client. We are particularly proud to have completed this installation ahead of schedule and to have received positive feedback regarding how clean the job had been and the lack

of interruption we had caused during the works.” Fundamentally, client relationships are incredibly important to the firm, as they ensure continued satisfaction for everyone who uses Climachill’s services. Paul details how staff maintain these relationships, working closely with the client from start to finish, constantly keeping them updated. This is important as it helps to distinguish Climachill from its competitors within the industry, conducting a personal and professional service. Paul is also keen to point out that the firm keeps up to date with any technological developments within the industry. “When completing a project, we offer a complete service from start to finish and we have our own electricians whom carry out the required electrical work needed to power the A/c systems we install. our immediate competitors don’t do this and so have to rely on third party electricians or ask the customer to organise this aspect themselves creating them hassle and grief. We are up to date with the latest systems being offered on the market and have

welcomed the introduction of ‘WiFi Controllers’ to the market allowing customers to control their new A/c Systems from an app on a smartphone or tablet, an offering which keeps us ahead of our customers. “In 2016, we provided our engineers with mobile internet enabled tablets and a bespoke reporting programme, allowing them to submit photos of the works they are doing and problems they encounter in one simple form. All engineer visits and works undertaken by us are now digitally reported and are signed for by our clients. When our engineer leaves the site, the report is submitted and arrives in our office email inbox within a few moments. This means we can immediately see what the engineer has reported and can be quick to order the parts that our clients need. It is also invaluable in helping us to keep accurate records and our clients value having the reports emailed to them for easy filing.” With regard to the future, Paul is hoping to capitalise on Climachill’s recent successes by expanding the team as it adapts to increased levels of work that the firm is undertaking.

Ultimately, with an innovative leader and well-trained staff, the firm has a bright future as it continues to grow. “Over the last few years we have grown well, adding new staff to our team in order to meet demand for the increased levels of work we are undertaking. The first apprentice we employed in 2013 has now completed his Level 3 qualifications and is now a fully qualified important member of our team. We have just recruited our second apprentice and continue to build our team at Climachill to benefit our clients.”
