HELLO GHANA PROJECT BOOKLET
GHANA Officially called the Republic of Ghana, is a sovereign unitary presidential constitutional democracy, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the sub region of West Africa. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" in the Soninke language. The territory of present-day Ghana has been inhabited for millennia, with the first permanent state dating back to the 11th century. Numerous kingdoms and empires emerged over the centuries, of which the most powerful was the Kingdom of Ashanti. Beginning in the 15th century, numerous European powers contested the area for trading rights, with the British ultimately establishing control of the coast by the late 19th century. Following over a century of native resistance, Ghana's current borders were established by the 1900s as the British Gold Coast. In 1957, it became the first subSaharan African nation to declare independence from European colonization. A multicultural nation, Ghana has a population of approximately 27 million, spanning a variety of ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. Its diverse geography and ecology ranges from coastal savannahs to tropical jungles. Ghana is a democratic country led by a president who is both head of state and head of the government. Ghanaian lives are made up of precious moments filled with love, fun, music, rich culture, excitement and so much more.
AIESEC LEGON FORWARD AIESEC in LEGON counts as one of the over 2,400Universities which harbor this organization and for the past 52 years, dedication and commitment have been given to delivering quality member, leadership and exchange experiences. The root of AIESEC in LEGON dates as far back as 1961 when the first President of the Country, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah introduced it into the Premier University of Ghana. The story behind the introduction of AIESEC to LEGON has always been described as an interesting one. On his return home from a conference, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah encountered a fellow in a play who was primarily going to introduce AIESEC in South Africa. After hours of talk and finding the relevance of AIESEC from the fellow, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah thought it wise to bring it over to his motherland and for the first time in Africa and in Ghana, AIESEC started operating in LEGON. As a representing country, AIESEC GHANA was also assumed to have started operations the minute AIESEC in LEGON commenced and this has over the years suggested a similar history shared between these two parties. For the several years after it’s introduction, AIESEC in LEGON was managed by foreigners who helped to build the foundations of the organization in the country. Natives beginning with Vincent and Enoch Marfo took over after and served as very strong native pioneers of the operations, precisely as Member Committee Presidents (MCPs) respectively. With the remarkable performances of respective leaders including, Belinda Aikins, George Nana Osei, David Agyemang, Edna Kavi, Isaac Opoku and Sandra Agyekum, AIESEC in LEGON has over the years seen tremendous growth both in the quality and quantity of member, leader and exchange experiences and was therefore no news to have received the accolade as the Role Model Local Committee (LC) in West Africa in 2012 and Role Model LC in Africa in 2015. Successively, we have emerged as the BEST LC in Ghana for four (4) consecutive times since 2008; currently taking the 2013 Best LC of the year, and even promises to maintain this in subsequent terms.
