SAN FRANCISCO AIDS FOUNDATION AT WORK.

GRAND SPONSORS

Dear Friends, Thirty years ago, the very first call came into San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Our community was in the early stages of being devastated by HIV/AIDS. People needed somewhere to get information and somewhere to find comfort from others going through the same struggle—somewhere to call. The foundation became that place.

AIDS Walk San Francisco was founded in 1987 by Craig R. Miller and his organization of activists, MZA Events. Miller and MZA have produced this landmark event benefiting San Francisco AIDS Foundation every summer for the past 25 years. Through the efforts of thousands of the foundation’s supporters, AIDS Walk San Francisco has become a San Francisco Bay Area tradition and the largest AIDS fundraising event in Northern California. Thank you for walking the Walk!

Over the last year, we have undergone tremendous growth, driven by a single enduring purpose: a community still in need. There remains a significant demand for HIV/AIDS prevention and care services in San Francisco. We still see roughly two new HIV infections every day in the city. Public programs that assist people living with HIV/AIDS face budget cuts at all levels of government. That’s why we are expanding free services like never before to confront HIV/AIDS in neighborhoods most impacted by the disease.

San Francisco AIDS Foundation confronts HIV in populations most impacted by the disease through education, advocacy, and free direct local services. Funds raised by AIDS Walk San Francisco participants support these vital services: EDUCATION Free online resources, publications and community forums on HIV risk, prevention, testing and care, and breaking news in science, policy and clinical research. ADVOCACY A powerful voice advocating for people at risk for or living with HIV to public officials at City Hall, in Sacramento and in our nation’s capitol. PREVENTION SERVICES Free support groups to 1,500 African Americans, Latinos, newly diagnosed men, and guys interested in service projects.

The work of San Francisco AIDS Foundation could not be accomplished without the generosity of everyone who participates in and supports AIDS Walk San Francisco. Your involvement is critical to programs and services that help people at risk for HIV, and those living with the disease.

CARE SERVICES Free case management and peer advocacy services, housing assistance, and financial benefits counseling for 600 people living with HIV/AIDS.

Because of you, San Francisco AIDS Foundation is able to continue bold public policy initiatives and innovative programs for HIV prevention and care. Our work helps people in our communities in many ways—through HIV prevention outreach, multilingual educational resources, HIV testing and counseling, substance use and mental health services, medical case management, and referrals to stable housing.

GAY MEN’S HEALTH SERVICES Free sexual health services including more than 12,000 HIV tests and screenings for other sexually transmitted infections annually at Magnet, our gay men’s health center in the Castro.

With each step we take in the AIDS Walk, we are moving toward a better future, and we are more united than ever in our common goal to see the end of HIV/AIDS. On behalf of the thousands of clients we serve each year, thank you.

SYRINGE ACCESS SERVICES Providing more than 2.4 million free sterile syringes annually to injection drug users to stop the spread of HIV and hepatitis C.

I look forward to being with you on July 15. In service,

SUBSTANCE ABUSE & MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Free counseling, education, and resources for 600 clients to address linkages between HIV, substance use, and mental health issues.

Frederick’s inspiring story Frederick has been living with HIV since 1990. Two years ago, he came to San Francisco AIDS Foundation in desperate need of help. He had no place to live and so he turned to the staff and community members of Black Brothers Esteem (BBE). Almost immediately, our staff found Frederick temporary housing. A few months later he was in a stable home. Frederick credits BBE and the foundation for saving his life. Frederick now comes to San Francisco AIDS Foundation every week to attend BBE meetings. For him, they are a safe place to talk about anything, to seek and give help, and to focus on spirituality and balance in life. Frederick also takes what he’s learned through BBE and shares his message of good health to his peers. He says the program is a great example of how to help oneself, and then help to change an entire community. Today Frederick is healthy, sober, and looking forward to a bright future. Walking through our doors changed his life and he’s not looking back. Sign Up Today! • aidswalk.net • 415.615.WALK

ver the past 18 years, Chevron has established its role as one of the AIDS Walk’s strongest and most committed sponsors. This year, with a record-breaking $150,000 contribution, Chevron has become the AIDS Walk’s first-ever Presenting Sponsor and the largest sponsor in AIDS Walk San Francisco history. Since the company began sponsoring the event in 1994, Chevron has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to the event and local community. With its contribution this year, Chevron has reached another sponsorship milestone, becoming only the second sponsor in AIDS Walk history to surpass half a million dollars in total sponsorship contributions.

And thousands of AIDS Walk San Francisco volunteers!

Chevron continues to demonstrate how to use their energy to protect the most valuable resource of all – people’s lives.

“For us, the fight against HIV/AIDS is personal, starting when our company and employees began to rally for HIV/AIDS causes in San Francisco more than 25 years ago,” said Rhonda Zygocki, Executive Vice President, Policy and Planning, for Chevron. “From the Bay Area to Sub-Saharan Africa, HIV/AIDS has impacted many of those close to us, including our family members, colleagues, and friends. Our longtime support for AIDS Walk San Francisco is an example of Chevron’s commitment in leading the charge against this deadly disease to ultimately help communities thrive around the world.” Beyond being one of the AIDS Walk’s largest-ever sponsors, Chevron’s team involvement has continued to place them in the top 20 AIDS Walk Gold Teams, further demonstrating how deeply the employees of Chevron care about the AIDS Walk and its mission.. In addition to events like AIDS Walk, Chevron’s partnerships with organizations like The Global Fund and successful employee programs preventing mother to child transmission in Angola and Nigeria further reflect the company’s global commitment to end this disease. “I am proud of the strong support and involvement by our employees in AIDS Walk San Francisco,” Zygocki added. “It brings home the personal nature of this issue and the dedication of our employees to join this global fight to eliminate HIV/AIDS.” The continued success of the AIDS Walk would not be possible without the generous support of enthusiastic sponsors like Chevron. The company stands tall as an elite member and leader of the philanthropic community, and a powerhouse in the fight to end AIDS.

Team Twitter Joins AIDS Walk San Francisco By Elyse Kadokura

F

or the first time, Twitter has formed a fundraising team to participate in AIDS Walk San Francisco. Founded in “the City by the Bay,” the social media giant has a huge presence in the City and has also recently become neighbors with the AIDS Walk offices, moving in just blocks away from San Francisco AIDS Foundation on Market Street. The team is led by veteran Star Walker Kerry Barker, and first-time participant Rose Nieh. Both are committed to building up Team Twitter, and making their first year a successful one. Along with handles that promote engagement and positive efforts in the community like @TwitterGood and @TwitterSF, Twitter has created a new handle, @TeamTwitter, for Twitter teams representing the company in the community, starting with AIDS Walk San Francisco. With already more than 1,000 followers, @TeamTwitter sent out their first tweet on May 9, “#TeamTwitter is joining @aidswalksf in July – Support the team and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation!”

This will be Twitter’s first year participating in AIDS Walk San Francisco. The team is led by veteran Star Walker, Kerry Barker (2nd from left), and first-time participant, Rose Nieh (2nd from right).

Online fundraising through social media platforms like Twitter is not only a fun way to participate in AIDS Walk, it is absolutely crucial to the success of the event”, says

Leif Green, Event Director of AIDS Walk San Francisco, Twitter lends itself to cause and action everyday with inspiring stories of people helping make the world a better place . More and more people have been taking their fundraising efforts online. Tools such as Twitter and Facebook have become invaluable resources for participants trying to reach out to large audiences in a simple yet sincere way. “It is so easy to share why the fight against HIV/AIDS is important to you, and to ask people to sponsor you with a press of a button,” says Aaron Rodriguez, AIDS Walk Team Coordinator. “I like to make personal shout-outs to people who sponsor me because they definitely deserve the recognition.” With Twitter playing such a huge role in raising funds for San Francisco AIDS Foundation and galvanizing the community, it is especially exciting that they will be with us in person at this year’s Walk. If you happen to come across them, online or in person, give them a shout-out yourself. #goteamtwitter!

or Tom Perrault, it has been a long journey as a champion in the fight against AIDS. Previously a volunteer at the AIDS Walk in Washington D.C., he was eager to get involved in San Francisco’s AIDS Walk community when he moved to the Bay Area in 1993. After nearly two decades as an active fundraising participant, in 2011 Tom took on the crucial leadership position of Chair of the Board of Directors of San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Despite the demands of his new role, Tom still continues setting a proud example of grass roots fundraising and activism through his continued AIDS Walk participation. His dedication and enthusiasm is evident in the sums he has personally raised for San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Tom has raised over $75,000 through his participation in AIDS Walk and other Foundation events. How does he do it? Tom’s advice to those just starting out is two-fold: “Send individual emails. Then follow up. That is the easiest and most effective way to ask for money. In addition, post your

progress on Facebook, which generates a great deal of enthusiasm and reaches a much larger group of your potential supporters.” Each year, Tom is pleasantly surprised by new donors, often from the distant past. “I get donations from my college friends, co-workers from previous jobs, and even a classmate from second grade!” Tom’s passion to fight the epidemic was ignited by what he calls “a moral imperative.” He saw the need to act during a time when many, including himself, were fearful of the disease, isolated by lack of awareness, and feeling neglected by the federal government. His years of involvement and powerful commitment have obliterated those feelings of seclusion and transformed him into the authority on HIV/AIDS that he is today. “Tom is a dedicated member of our community who cares deeply about stopping the spread of HIV and improving the health of all people living with the disease,” said Neil Giuliano, CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation. “Because of Tom’s bold leadership, the Foundation is expanding to meet the needs of our community like never before. His vision and efforts are moving us closer to the day when HIV/AIDS is no more.” “All San Franciscans are fortunate to have Tom fighting on their side;” said AIDS Walk Founder/Producer Craig Miller. Both as a fundraising exemplar and as a leader helping shape the efforts of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Tom Perrault is truly walking the Walk. You don’t have to be Chairman of the Board to be an expert fundraiser! Call us anytime at 415.615.9255 (WALK) for practical advice on becoming a fundraising superstar.

43 Candles, 10 Kilometers, 1 Birthday Cake

AIDS Walk Staffer Linsey Kramer Overcomes Devastating Injury

After Near-Death Collision, this Activist Returns to Fight in Full Force

A

sk Daniel Sarabia-Mason what his wish is for his upcoming birthday and he’ll tell you, “Nothing for me, just donate to AIDS Walk San Francisco!” In addition to raising money for this year’s AIDS Walk, Daniel is taking things a step further: In honor of his 43rd birthday, occurring the day after the Walk, he is recruiting 43 friends to join his AIDS Walk team. And the best part? They will be dressed as candles (with fabulous rainbow flames, of course), while Daniel will be the birthday cake – hence his team name, Daniel’s 43 Candles. Ten kilometers of friends, birthday cake, and candles – what better way to commemorate turning 43 while fighting AIDS? Daniel’s core group of eight friends – who call themselves “The U.S.” (short for The Usual Suspects) – will play an integral role in helping him reach his goal of 43 team members. Through social networking, he plans to recruit friends and friends-of-friends to join his team. They’re confident that the opportunity to parade through Golden Gate Park dressed as a candle (and in support of a great cause!) will be enough of an incentive to draw in plenty of walkers! This will be Daniel’s first AIDS Walk, though he has donated to other participants in the past. His motivation for starting a team this year comes from a desire to give back to his community. AIDS Walk San Francisco fundraising supports the work of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and more than thirty local HIV/AIDS service organizations. These programs and services provide medical care, counseling, home delivered meals, women’s and children’s services, and much more to people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as radically reduce HIV infections throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Supporters like Daniel help ensure this vital work forges ahead toward an AIDS-free generation. Look out for Daniel and the flames of his forty-three candles at the AIDS Walk on July 15, and if you see him, make sure to wish him a happy birthday! Next year we hope to see him out walking again with one more candle in tow.

Daniel Sarabia-Mason (far-left) always having a great time!

n October 2009, Linsey Kramer, a veteran of eight AIDS Walk campaigns, suffered a traumatic accident. As she was cycling from her home in the Inner Sunset to our office on 2nd Street, she was literally run over by a passing truck. Her pelvis was shattered. Were it not for medical gel foam technology, developed only a few years prior to her accident, Linsey would have died from intense internal bleeding. Now 27, Linsey recently returned to the AIDS Walk staff in her first full-time job since the accident. She is already hard at work recruiting participants and motivating fundraising as this year's Star Walker™ Coordinator. For six years, Linsey has played a major role in AIDS Walks in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Ft. Lauderdale. She began her AIDS activism in San Francisco several years after her Uncle Bobby died of AIDS-related complications when she was a college freshman. This year, Linsey is as dedicated and determined to fight AIDS as ever. She has been making a slow, painful, but steady recovery, while taking on new challenges. Amazingly, she just participated in the AIDS/ LifeCycle this June, in which she biked from

Nothing seems to get Linsey Kramer (above) down!

San Francisco all the way to Los Angeles while raising money for San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Linsey has a disciplined painmanagement program that she will need to maintain for the rest of her life. With her infectious smile and upbeat attitude, one wouldn’t imagine the sleepless nights of physical discomfort and emotional stress with which she has to contend. Linsey has decided that she won’t let this accident get in the way of her being of service to others – a great source of happiness in her life. Linsey is an extraordinary example of courage; of choosing to walk her own path, or in her case, walk and ride on behalf of others. So to all you AIDS Walk Star Walkers or aspiring Star Walkers out there, Linsey is here for you! She is smarter than a whip; tougher than a truck; and as inspiring as a true survivor. Give our amazing Linsey Kramer a call if you want help with your fundraising, or if you could just use a little personal uplift yourself. Linsey is there for you, and for all of us. Not only is Gap Inc. one of AIDS Walk San Francisco’s top sponsors, it is also the top AIDS Walk fundraising team! The team receives a nice fundraising boost due to the company’s generous matching gift policy, which will even match volunteer hours! Dedicated AIDS Walk committee members meet weekly to take the team’s fundraising to soaring heights. Over the years, the team has raised more than $2 million for the fight against AIDS. We are so grateful!

TOP FUNDRAISING PRIMARY/ SECONDARY SCHOOL TEAM * Congratulations to the Gold Teams with 50 or fewer walkers on their team!

BHS KEY CLUB

For seven years, the highest fundraising primary/secondary school team has been Berkeley Key Club, which is made up of students at Berkeley High School. Last year they raised $2,065 – a recordbreaker for the group! Key Clubs are student-led and provide members with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. We are so thankful that these teens uphold the school’s tradition of fighting HIV/AIDS year after year.

This is a very special year for the Levi Strauss & Co team. It marks the 30th anniversary since Levi’s joined the fight against HIV/AIDS. One of the first companies to publicly do so, Levi’s has been committed to supporting many HIV/AIDS programs and events in San Francisco, including Project Open Hand, Dining Out for Life, and, of course, AIDS Walk San Francisco. With support from the top executives and employees throughout the company, Levi’s has been a Gold Team every year since the category was first created, and has also been a sponsor for more than ten years. The team has raised an incredible overall total of more than $850,000 for San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO

3rd

BANK OF AMERICA

4th

University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has been a part of AIDS Walk San Francisco since the beginning. Comprised of a coalition of several smaller groups from the university’s various departments, UCSF is one of the top fundraising teams at AIDS Walk San Francisco, as well as one of the largest. The highest fundraising team within the coalition each year receives the UCSF AIDS Walk Trophy with their team’s name engraved. Across the campus, there are many events leading up to the AIDS Walk in July that encourage fundraising and HIV/AIDS awareness. Last year, the coalition raised a phenomenal $54,985. It is also the top fundraising school team!

Bank of America/Merrill Lynch has been one of the largest teams to support AIDS Walk San Francisco since the early years of the event. Not only do they have a tremendous history of raising more than $700,000 dollars cumulatively, but they are also consistently one of the largest teams to walk, registering over 100 walkers year after year. More often than not, their team is well over 200 members. Throughout the years, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch has registered more than 4,000 walkers, making them an enormous presence at every AIDS Walk San Francisco. If you spot a small sea of red shirts in the crowd on the day of the event, there’s a very good chance it will be Bank of America/Merrill Lynch.

Meet the AIDS Walk Team Coordinators. Call us at 415.615.WALK to form a team TODAY!

Rebecca Stievater

LEVI STRAUSS & CO.

SAN FRANCISCO AIDS FOUNDATION

The primary benefiting organization of AIDS Walk San Francisco is also one of the top fundraising teams—they don’t just talk the talk, they walk the Walk – and raise an impressive sum while doing it! This is the team’s third year among the top five teams, and their 13th year as a Gold Team. For the past four years they have brought out more than 160 walkers!

Star Walkers Club – Meet Dan Ebert

O

ne of AIDS Walk San Francisco’s great longtime participants, Dan Ebert, shared with us the many reasons why he walks, and brought us to tears with his words. Below is Dan’s story. If you would like to share with us why you walk, please email us at sfinfo@aidswalk.net. Why do I walk? I walk because my last partner, Doug, and I had a phone list of nearly 300 friends, colleagues, and acquaintances in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and New York. In 1986 we lost about 50 of those people, including some of our previous partners, business associates, and wonderful friends. In 1987, another 70 or so ceased answering their phones. In 1988 I lost Doug because I had no medical authority over his treatment, and his mother chose to not let the hospital administer the medication ordered to treat his PCP [a lung infection that often affects people with HIV]. He died four days later. I walk because I lost all but about 29 people on that list over the next couple years, and several more I met in support groups over the following several years. I walk because they cannot. I walk to tell young people at the third AIDS Walk checkpoint where I volunteer each year what it was like, and why it should never happen again. I walk because, by some strange twist of fate, I take a handful of pills a couple times a day and I’m still here. I walk because not everyone who needs it has the $2,000 plus every month to spend on medication, or adequate food to maintain their state of health.

Dedicated Volunteers Embody AIDS Walk Spirit By Samantha Butts

A

AIDS Walk San Francisco would not be possible without the support and dedication of its incredible volunteers. Every year a continuous stream of new, energetic volunteers gathers at Golden Gate Park. Behind the scenes, a group of longtime volunteers, prominent among them Mary Lambert, Claire Gerdnt Jr., and Wendy Chang, diligently return to the AIDS Walk San Francisco office laughing, sharing jokes, and working religiously for the fight to end AIDS. Mary Lambert is a well-known fixture at AIDS Walk San Francisco and is excitedly welcomed back each year by staff and fellow volunteers. She has been with AIDS Walk San Francisco since 1986 and continues to share her

kindheartedness, personal experiences, and eagerly anticipated treats. She started volunteering as a favor to a friend but continued to come back each year because she felt she “was doing something that needed to be done.” For Mary, the relationships she has established with AIDS Walk San Francisco Staff and other long-term volunteers have always been part of the draw. Claire Gerndt, Jr. has been working alongside Mary for more than 17 years. She returns year after year as a way of saying “thank you.” With many friends who struggle with HIV, she is aware of the hardships they face and is thankful to San Francisco AIDS Foundation for their programs and personal support. For

Claire, “education is the goal” to further prevent the spread of HIV. Wendy Chang, another long term supporter of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, met Claire ten years ago while volunteering with Project Open Hand. Wendy, encouraged by Claire, started volunteering for AIDS Walk San Francisco more than five years ago and has continued to be a tremendous asset to the event. In addition to spending time with her volunteer friends, Wendy enjoys being part of “the cause.” Together, Mary, Claire, and Wendy bring a welcoming and fun energy to the AIDS Walk San Francisco office. They are wonderful examples of what can be achieved when people come together to make a difference.

AIDS Walk San Francisco Star Walkers By Leif Green

A

IDS Walk San Francisco is extremely grateful to everyone who raises vital funds to fight AIDS, but we do like to shine a special spotlight on those whose fundraising achievement is particularly exceptional—the members of the AIDS Walk San Francisco Star Walkers Club! The Star Walkers Club is comprised of participants who pledge to raise $1,000 or more. Hundreds of participants reach that goal, and many go far beyond that. “Raising more than 65% of the overall total each year, Star Walkers are a driving force behind the success of the AIDS Walk,” remarks Linsey Kramer, Star Walker Coordinator. “We reward those who have reached their $1,000 goal with a Star Walker crown, making them fundraising royalty for the day! They can expect cheers, curtsies, bows, and even whistles from fellow walkers and volunteers!” In addition to receiving fundraising awards, Star Walkers also attend the exclusive Star Walker Breakfast

Fundraising Royalty! A Star Walker receives his 24-Karat gold cardboard crown at last year’s AIDS Walk San Francisco.

on the morning of the AIDS Walk. “We are so grateful for all of the heart each and every Star Walker puts into their fundraising efforts, and we like to show them our appreciation in any way we can!” Kramer adds. If you would like more information about the Star Walkers Club, please call Linsey at the AIDS Walk San Francisco office at 415.615.9255 (WALK) or visit the AIDS Walk San Francisco website at aidswalk.net. There is still plenty of time to become a member of the fundraising elite!
