Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children (OVC) AIDSTAR-One addresses key thematic issues affecting orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), including child safeguarding and protection, early childhood development (ECD), food and nutrition security (FNS), the integration of maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services with HIV services, and family strengthening. CHILD SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTION The Clinical Management of Children and Adolescents Who Have Experienced Sexual Violence—Technical Considerations for PEPFAR Programs: These technical considerations and accompanying job aids guide medical providers to address and respond to the unique needs and rights of children who have experienced sexual violence and exploitation. This document is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Kiswahili. Situational Analysis on Post-rape Care of Children in Lesotho and Mozambique: These country situational analyses assess what supports or hinders effective care and support for children who experience sexual violence and exploitation. analysis & Technical Report on Protecting Children Affected by HIV Against Abuse, Exploitation,Violence, and Neglect: This technical report explores strategies to protect children from abuse, exploitation, violence, and neglect, drawing on lessons learned by OVC program managers and policy makers.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) Early Childhood Development for Orphans and Vulnerable Children: This technical brief highlights benefits of ECD interventions and outlines essential elements of ECD programming. Technical Brief on Including Orphans and Vulnerable Children with Disabilities in Early Childhood Development Programs: This technical brief provides guidance on implementing ECD programs for young OVC with disabilities and their families.

INTEGRATED APPROACHES Case Study on Swinging to New Heights—Linking Resources to Build an Integrated Care Network for Orphans and Vulnerable Children and Their Caregivers in Nigeria: This case study examines an integrated OVC program in Nigeria, and demonstrates how leveraging existing capacity and building strong linkages between sectors can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of HIV programs.


Technical Consultation on Meeting the HIV, MNCH and Social Support Needs of Mothers and Their Young Children: This technical consultation from the 2011 Field Driven Learning Meeting for U.S. government partners focuses on approaches to integrating HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for pregnant women, mothers, and their young children.

FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY (FNS) The Debilitating Cycle of HIV, Food Insecurity, and Malnutrition Issue Paper: This guide overviews the relationship between HIV and food security, illustrates the causes of HIV-related food and nutrition insecurity, and provides programmatic interventions and resources.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING Supporting and Strengthening Child-Caregiver Relationships: This review summarizes findings of interventions to support caregiving and identifies general principles and lessons learned to strengthen child-caregiver relationships, particularly those affected by HIV.
