Glasgow Design Innovation Center Glasgow, Scotland, Fall 2017 Prof. Aaron Weinert

Our master’s travel studio gave us the opportunity to design a building that would commemorate a potentially independent Scotland in either Edinburgh or Glasgow. The building would embrace the essence of chosen city and Scotland as a whole in some way. The innovation center would acknowledge the growing industries of Glasgow and Scotland, aiming to bring people together through work and for social interaction. The design utilized open social gathering spaces that are connected visually to more private group work and meeting spaces in order to surround users with activity.

Douglas D. Schumann Library Kinetic Art Installation Boston, MA, Spring 2017 Prof. Robert Trumbour

The library at Wentworth Institute of Technology has been renovated to provide a multi-use learning environment for students. The redesign takes advantage of natural light, open space, and technology. Our studio class was responsible for designing an art installation that responded to the life of the library and school through technology. Our process included designing moving modules, testing materials and forms, and planning the kinetic movement and responses to stimuli. Responsibilities of the design were divided between students. I was involved in designing the form of the module, the gantry support system, and the style of movement for the modules using Grasshopper and Rhino to animate the movements. I also assisted in building the physical prototype and running the code for the motors.

Fanny Hensel Music School Addition Berlin, Germany, Fall 2016 Prof. Joachim Doerr

The Fanny Hensel Music School in the Berlin Mitte was a building that survived World War II, and subsequently remained somewhat outdated. The extension proposal was made to bring the building up to date and also make the school more inviting to new students, especially incoming refugees. My design took advantage of the existing axes of circulation by extending the axes through the extension so that the original building was easily noticeable and accessible through the addition.

Loeb Theater Addition Cambridge, MA, Spring 2016 Prof. Meliti Dikeos

The Loeb Theater which hosts the American Repertory Theatre is a renowned organization which frequently puts on shows from Broadway. Though the people that work in the building do great work, the building itself was lacking space and accessibility, so the addition aimed to address those problems. The educational and theater areas are the two pieces of program that control this addition, so when occupants make their way through the building to these destinations, points along the way will direct their eye towards far views, allowing them to acknowledge the existing and new inside the building, and also their place in the neighborhood.
