FINGER CAMERA The Finger Camera project aim was to develop a new and innovative camera concept that would change the way of how we take pictures nowadays. The product was developed thinking of the newest and most futuristic technologies that will be available in the next few years. In that case, the project presented is a smart camera integrated by a micro camera and a wristband that will take pictures when something raises the user’s interest and it also will give the user all the information needed and required about the places that he visits (architecture, entertainment, restaurants...).

CO2 emissions to the environment is a big concern nowadays in our society. The reduction of these emissions during manufacturing processes is an issue to consider when designing a product. With this project, we redesigned a toaster to make it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

SMART INNOVATIONS PLC. The briefing recieved at the begining of this project was the following one:

Smart Innovations plc. (with a worldwide reputation for the manufacture of vacuum cleaners, washing machines and hand-driers) needs the development of a new range of ideas for a real ‘step change’. Launch date: 2018 Initial test launch: 50K across 5 countries First year production volumes: million units rising up to 5 million units by year 3

Introduction The concepts presented in this section are three low cost solutions for developing countries. On the one hand, we will tackle the lack of electricity by giving lighting solutions to people that do not meet the basic standards of living (outdoors and indoors lighting). On the other hand, solutions related with cooking to try to avoid the current risks as breathing diseasses and even death that people face nowadays will be given as well. The idea is to use technology to challenge poverty by building resources and capabilities for these people by improving their access to the minimum standards of living at really low and affordable prices. This project wants to have an influence in terms of quality of living in those societies. Technology will be used as a mean for the benefit of all the population in terms of health, opportunities, security, society and also fulfilment.

A. OUTDOORS LIGHTING How it works?

Scenario Charge the light sheet for about 5 hours to ge up to 10 hours of light. The indicator next to the button will indicate if the battery is fully charged.

Harmful smokes produced by the burn of biomass fuels causes lots of deaths in developing countries every year. The best solution is to vent the smoke. The product presented is an off-grid wood stove fan. There is no need of electricity. Uses heat from the stove to power the double blade fan. Thanks to the optimised shape the smoke flows to the top fan easily to get rid of unhealthy smokes created by biomass fuels burnt.

FUTURE LIVING The Future Living project aimed to develop three concepts for the future that would change the way of how we do things today, in that particular case, all the products developed and presented for this project are related with people’s food lifestyle. With this range of products the idea is to promote a healthier lifestyle towards food by providing convenience and facilities to the user.

Everyday, we have less time to cook due to our lifestyles. We tend to eat unhealthy. Obesity has reached proportions globally (2,8 M die every year as a result of being overweight). This product will motivate people to have a healthier lifestyle without the necessity of investing time on it.

MISSION TO MARS The sensation of freshness is important when we consider a place like Mars where current water is not available or when taking a shower is not as easy as could be on Earth. The product presented is a special washing machine intended to be used in a Mars Mission by 10 colonists. The main purpose of this new object is to provide comfort to the user, therefore it could be allocated into the esteem level of the Maslow’s Hierarchy due to the fact that its overall performance provides the user with confidence and self-esteem indirectly. Also we could consider that it also covers basic needs as the physiological ones. It is assumed that the basic things are provided to the crew; therefore, the overall point of the project is to try to design a project that could satisfy the highest levels of this hierarchy. It is mainly based on a mesh that can be situated wherever either in the space shuttle or the spatial base in Mars. It has the capability to clean all types of clothes (spatial suits, daily clothes, underwear, ...). It is easy to use and innovative; a new concept of washing your clothes. Prepared for the future and to perform in hostile and different environments.

REMEMBER - IT The goal was to design an object to help people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The idea was to create a device that would help them to their daily life in two different areas: - Planification of their everyday routine (in first stages of the disease) - Helping them with communication with others (in advanced stages of the disease)

IPSUM The project aim was to design a new concept of ticketing system for buses to improve the current one running nowadays in The West Midlands. The project considered aspects such as: convenience, ease of use, intuitive features or even end users’ / professionals’ in the area needs reflections on the final product. In this project, the ability to innovate and consider things from a different point of view were utilised to create a value in the final product and to reconsider the actual bus system nowadays.
