The Mu Alpha Theta National Math Competition takes place every year in a designated location. To participate in this math competition, each team must attend a certain number of state level competitions and prepare themselves in a series of different subjects of math. There are teams specializing in sequences and series, matrices, calculus and many more. I participated with the team and also as an individual competing in the sequences and series test.

To earn this recognition within my school, I had to maintain a grade point average of 4.0 into my 9th grade year. The award was given to a select few in the school who had achieved academic excellence into Junior High and our name was mentioned in the local newspaper.

The AMC is a national math competition that is open to students in high school, participants are usually chosen based off of their abilities in mathematics, level at which they were practicing math, and work ethic. I believe that this competition took place in my

This certificate of accomplishment is to award me for competing in the Northwest Math Championship. This is a competition that I participated in because of my involvement with the Tahoma Senior High School’s math club. We regularly meet every week to go over tests that specialize in certain areas of mathematics such as geometry or calculus and we learn about the history of it and practice problems relevant to those areas. To prepare for this specific competition we all met each week and had our two different coaches, Mrs. Shirley and Mr. Brown teach and help us with practice tests so we could do our best when competing with other schools.

The Tahoma Senior High School Math Team participates in about 7-9 math competitions on average yearly, not including Nationals. In my ninth grade year, the team of students those were in my grade level advanced to the state level in the MathCounts competitions because of our successes in the preceding levels of competition.

In the summer before beginning my ninth grade year at Tahoma Junior High School, I participated in an essay writing competition that was organized by the Host Committee of the Assamese Convention. The essay prompt was to write about the significance of the Ganges river to the Indian culture and it had to be done under a certain word limit. I placed first that year and received an award and this certificate.

I received distinction in the eighth grade also for my grade point average of 4.0 in Tahoma Junior High School. Around 40 students received the honor that year and we were acclaimed in the Voice of the Valley.

We were asked questions regarding the history of a region or asked to identify a region based off of historical information provided to us. It was a challenging competition and many of us had to wrack our brains to keep up with the level of difficulty presented to us.

The Solo-Ensemble contest is a contest that occurs annually and kids who partake in musical activities in school or outside of school such as the Maple Valley Youth Symphony or simply take lesson sign up to perform a composition of their choice in front of a panel of judges. My flute quartet played Minuet in G that year and achieved a ranking of 1, which is the highest ranking that can be earned from the judges. We usually practiced the piece multiple times outside of class and sometimes in class to perfect our technique and articulation, it took many hours of practice to finally make our song presentable but it was all worth it when we received feedback from the judging panel.

I participated in the “MathCounts competition beginning in eighth grade and in my first year we competed at the primary level and progressed in the next year. It was a significant learning experience because the entire team was exposed to math problems that we were not accustomed to. The type of mathematics we competed in were very different from what we learned in school.

This award was presented to me because of my achieving the rank of first chair in the class and being the lead flute player during concerts for my section. The musical program at Pine Lake Middle School was very large and highly acclaimed and the conductor of the band pushed all of us musicians to our limits by giving us very difficult pieces to sight read. It was a challenging year because of these difficulties but it taught me much about perseverance and not giving up when things get hard.

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony and Orchestra is an organization that is funded by the entire city of Maple Valley and also by the parents and people who are involved in it. We meet every Monday for 2 hours and our conductor presents music for us to sightread. Once we decided on a few compositions, we would spend each week perfecting them and then put on benefit concerts. We gained more and more people as the years went on but I was one of the first ones to join and keep it running. During the holiday season we would combine with the city’s choir and put on a show at the lake. It was great fun and it broadened my taste in music because our conductor chose songs not popularly known.

Over the course of my high school years, I have taken a total of 3 college preparatory classes and 7 advanced placement courses. I have taken 4 AP exams in May of my sophomore and junior year. Only European history exam was offered for sophomores and in May of my junior year I took the English language, Biology, and Calculus AB exams. Pine Lake Middle School recognized its students who achieved academic excellence and was still able to maintain a grade point average that was above 3.5. This membership could only be kept if the gpa was maintained throughout the rest of the years of attending Pine Lake and only if we proved ourselves to be outstanding members of the community by performing community service. I learned many things that year, doing community service to benefit all my neighbors and friends was a humbling experience.

I participated in Roger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella in my ninth grade year, I played the role of Fox and one of the three ladies of the choir. This was a completely different experience for me because it was a musical and the entire dynamic of it the cast was different than what it would be within a normal play. I enjoyed performing and it broadened my horizons about the theatrical arena.

This award was rewarded to me because we had a contest at our school to keep track of who read the most books per month and whichever class raised the highest number of points would earn their class a party. I was rewarded with the highest number of points because I read the most books that month that required higher-level thinking and took online quizzes on them and passed with excelling scores.

I participated in the art of Ken Po for about 4 years and progressed through the rankings of belts also. The different subdivisions of ken po in the area took part in many competitions with other Karate studios and I enjoyed participating in them. Sometimes we would have to demonstrate our skill with the nun chucks or the staff and would receive higher ranking if our skill was sufficient.
