After 75 years of lobbying for religious liberties on Capital Hill in Washington DC, the BJC was in need of a complete interior renovation for their floor in their building that was constructed in 1958. The non-forprofit organization desired an office that reflected who they were to the general public. They needed a space to host visitor’s as they tour their office and capital area. The single hallway with primary offices through flanking secretary offices layout was abandoned. The old block walls came down. Glass walls anchored with a rich pear wood veneer allowed light to diffused across the entire office. Visibility of their process and collaboration was enhanced with their renovation. The BJC’s artifacts went from cluttered desks and old wood panel walls to intentional displays that accommodated everything from sculptures and paintings to their current publications.

lsw miscellaneous projects My relationship with the Lab School of Washington began with smaller interior renovations throughout their campus. Office relocations, a new art gallery, corridor renovations and acoustical solutions have provided insight into the school, the way the students learn, and how the staff teaches. These projects have helped to easy the design process for the master plan and the new high school.

The Lab School of Washington’s Strategic Plan included a commitment to being “best in class” in the LD educational field. This created the need for a master plan that determined the optimum path to a campus “that enhances pedagogy and fosters both joy and pride on the part of staff and students alike.” Initially, an ideal teaching and learning environment was developed to help determine how much SF the school would need to properly accommodate their student body. Option C is now undergoing design development and will be available to the students Spring 2016.

The Lab School of Washington teach their students to overcome learning differences through an arts based curriculum. Working with Lab School since 2011 has been my most rewarding professional opportunity. Teacher/student workshops, past projects with the school, developing their master plan, and trips with the head master have helped shed light on their learning processes and what they need from their buildings. It is much more than just a school. How do you create architecture to a student body that accommodates every type of learning on an urban site with a limited available building footprint? Collaboration, flexibility, acoustics, and visibility were the driving factors for the design incorporating the extremes of each category. The tight puzzle is coming together.

The Lab School of Washington team includes a general contractor that is periodically verifying the project’s construction costs. The cost estimate from the schematic design resulted in a value engineer list that encouraged brick as the main exterior material and strategic green roof placement. Simultaneously, I curated a teacher planning workshop and visioning session with middle school students alongside the lead designer. Synthesizing the results from the planning sessions and the cost estimate provided the opportunity to improve the new high school and tailor all aspects of the design to the end users.
