Research | About the Architects

Bendetta Tagliabue (1963 - present)

Enric Miralles I Moya (1995-2000)

Education: Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) and later in New York.

Education: Escola Tècnica Superior d›Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) in 1978

The Italian architect works in fields of architecture, design of public spaces, rehabilitation, interior, and industrial design. She has been prized for her extensively poetic architecture which she curates to always be attentive to its context.

Throughout his study (1978-1973), he worked with architects Albert Viaplana and Helio Pinon, ultimately leading him to becoming involved in the construction of the Plasa dels Paisos Catalans. A number of years later he founded his own office with wife Carmes Pinos. The couple worked on unique projects together that grabbed international attention which resulted in their commissions in Spain and overseas.

In addition to her position as director at Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, which she formed with her late husband, she has been visiting professor at Harvard, Columbia, and the ETSAB while also being part of the jurors around the world.

After their split in 1991, Miralles founded a new firm with his new wife Bendetta Tagliabue under the name EMBT architects. Tagliabue continued their practice under Miralles’ name after his tragic death in the year 2000.

Research | EMBT

The collaboration of these two architects birthed the international architecture office of EMBT In the year 1994. AS a result of this collaboration, innovative approach was brought to the field, one that focuses on an experimentation and architecture as a learning opportunity.

Tagliabue and Miralles tied their traditions and beliefs into their works resulting in an architecture that represents something more. Every project was a challenge within itself, addressing culture, the treatment of the site, and the environment.

Throughout this collaboration EMBT worked on projects such as the New Scottish parliament in Edinburgh, The Headquarters of Gas Natural, their own house in the old city Barcelona, and the Spanish Pavilion for expo 2010.

After the premature death of Miralles, Tagliabue completed over 10 unfinished projects of hers and Miralles’ whilst starting many new ones.

Miralles Tagliabue EMBT now has offices in Barcelona, Shanghai and China while operating in other parts of the world as well such as Europe and Taiwan.

Zhang Daqian Museum

The Spanish pavilion For Expo

Commissioned for the painter Zhang Daqain in her birthplace in Neijiang, China, the design incorporated the culture of the East and The West indicating the past and future.

This project was intended to reflect the climate of Spain as well as the stunning craftsmanship of the wickerwork. The wickerwork was used to showcase a suitable and different natural concept.

The museum conforms to the topography and nature of the site, incorporating the vegetation and originating from the teahouse present on the site.

Weaving techniques and the use of the fibers that are used in different cultures are present in the building.

This project has a vast area of 7500 m^2 to try and harmonize the Spanish and Chinese cultures within.

Copagri Pavillion ‘Lobe it’

Naples Underground Central Station

The combination of two single domes with different heights but same diameter. These two domes create a space that can adapt and be altered for different needs. The structure is made up of steel plates in an origamilike composition.

Natural lighting and ventilation take control in the domes as a result of the permeability and the effort to make them interact with the landscape.

The top of the domes are designed to support functions such as light and speakers.

In an effort to improve the infrastructure of the city of Naples, this metro station utilizes the surrounding concrete structures while morphing them with a wooden element.

Aiming to improve accessibility to public transportation the structure allows natural light to flood the space while providing shade to the users.

This space is meant to create an interactive area for the comers and goers.

Research | School of Management in Shanghai

Fudan is located in a compound of universities within Shanghai.

The three components of this university are separate pieces that had to be connected in a way that portrays the identity of Fudan.

The central green spine between blocks is designed to make a significant impact on how the campuses are viewed by creating this urban mixture.

There are two main exterior landscapes, each treated in their own way. The central BLVD is filled with big trees and water giving it an urban feel, while the internal area focuses on vegetation between the buildings weaving the outside with the inside.

Research | School of Management in Shanghai

Instead of creating a border with this building, EMBT designed it in a way to address its surrounding site, becoming part of the network.

With “Heavenly lights” being the rough translation of the word Fudan, students can experience these lights in the place they are studying.

The program is said to accept around 8000 people at peak days which is possible as a result of the comfortable circulation and well thought out organization.

Architect

Born in Manchester in 1935, Norman Foster is a British architect that is known for his beautiful use of steel and glass. Following his graduation from Manchester University School of Architecture and City Planning in 1961, Foster won a Henry Fellowship to Yale University, continuing there to acheive his Masters in Architecture Foster and Partners, founded in London in 1967 by Foster, is now a worldwide firm with project offices in more than twenty countries. From urban master plans and airports to public infrastructure and offices, the company has been responsible for a strikingly wide range of work over the last five decades.
