2009 Annual Report
...One Life at a Time
Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, Take a look inside these pages and you will see that Covenant House Missouri has been blessed by the support of donors, friends and staff this fiscal year. Without your help, we would not be able to help the most vulnerable youth in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. In just one year, Covenant House Missouri has made enormous progress. This year’s donations made it possible to bring teens out of homelessness and into hope. We have helped 174 youth get off of the streets and into safe living conditions. This fiscal year, 105 of our youth completed high school or earned their GEDs through Covenant House programs. The lives of these teens and those around them have been changed forever. But there is still so much to do. Your continued support is critical to provide programs for our homeless teens. Suzanne Wagener Executive Director

Mobile Street Outreach: Our outreach team visited 3,033 youth and provided shelter, food, blankets, resources and/or transportation to youth in need. Supportive Services: 27 youth earned their GED 88 youth enrolled in or completed high school 26 youth enrolled in college 105 youth completed our employment readiness classes 93 youth found jobs Drop In Center: 140 youth attended life skills and healthy relationship classes as well as participated in community volunteer projects and field trips. Crisis Services: This year, we were able to provide shelter, warm meals, showers, counseling and additional resources to create stable lives for 174 youths. 89% of youth were successfully discharged from the program into a stable living environment. Transitional Living Program: 47 youth successfully moved into our Transitional Living Program. The program provides a safe and caring environment for youth to live while furthering their education, finding living wage employment and working on skills needed for success. The goal for each youth is a successful transition to live in the community independently. 90% of youth were successfully discharged.
Words from A Youth “God’s Purpose” By Maurice When I came to Covenant House I was at a point where I felt there was no point to go on living. I was torn mentally. I had been running from a family who obviously didn’t want me to be a part of it. I felt that everyone God had placed in my life as an influence was not very influential at all. I did extreme things to escape the life and environment of drug use and the downward spiral to destruction. Growing up in an environment where drugs, gangs, police chases and killings are everyday events, it’s hard to be different. I thought God had given up on me, and had put me on earth without a purpose. I asked myself, “What am I doing wrong?” My pastor suggested a place where I could go and be myself, a place where people wouldn’t judge me by what I had or didn’t have. He showed me the Covenant House website and I decided to give it a try. There are so many programs to help broken kids get back on track. What I like about CHMO is that everyone is here for the same purpose: to better themselves. Covenant House is the best thing to happen in my life. I now know who I am. I know what I am worth to God and the world. Covenant House helped me to find God’s purpose and in that, peace and satisfaction. I have new goals. My past is just that, and I refuse to let it determine my future. I want to use the skills I have learned to make me into someone’s favorite English teacher and eventually, principal. I believe that is God’s purpose.

Make a Bequest: Leaving a bequest to Covenant House Missouri creates a life-changing legacy for the future through your will. In-Kind Donations: Help youth in need by donating new underwear, socks, sheets, towels, hygiene products (deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, soap, etc.) or gently used clothing, coats, hats, gloves and blankets. Volunteer Opportunities: Donating your time to tutor, teach a class, volunteer with one of our special events, or simply help out with clerical work helps CHMO keep expenses down and allows us to provide more direct resources to the youth. Both individual and group volunteers are welcome. You can sign up to volunteer online at www.covenanthousemo.org. Young Professionals: Fun and philanthropy meet in this group for young professionals 21-40 years of age. Network, learn and advocate for our homeless, runaway and at-risk youth. Planned Giving “I don’t know what the future may hold, but I know who holds Our future is in the hands of the youth who will someday accomplish amazing achievements with the help of Covenant House Missouri. Now, through the Cornerstone society, you can leave a lasting legacy for the youth of CHMO. The gift you leave will bring hope to homeless youth. It will help our youth to accomplish their dreams and become an inspiration for the future. The Cornerstone is a special group of donors who have remembered Covenant House Missouri in their estate plans. Possible gifts include: gifts of stock, charitable bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and other options. You should consult your tax advisor for the right option for your individual situation. The founding member of the Covenant House Missouri Cornerstone is Dan Woods, a Board Member and friend of CHMO. Woods feels it is important to leave a legacy for future generations “These teens will be able to accomplish amazing things because of the help they receive from Covenant House Missouri,” says Woods. “I feel good knowing that my gift will enable a homeless kid to get off the streets and back into school, or get the counseling they need in order to change their lives.”
The Cornerstone Society the future.” -Ralph Abernathy, Civil Rights Activist (1926-1991) Another member of Cornerstone, Erik Solverud, says, “It gives me a positive feeling to know that because of my gift a youth will have access to shelter, counseling and other CHMO services. Members of the Cornerstone society are sent periodic updates about the youth of Covenant House and the good work being done in our community. In addition, members are recognized annually in various Covenant House Missouri publications, unless they choose to remain anonymous. “Remembering Covenant House Missouri in my estate planning was also a way for me to let others know how important the organization is to me. Hopefully my gift will also inspire others to get involved in the cause of helping homeless youth,” says Woods. “The Cornerstone Society gives me the ability to plan now so that I know my favorite charity will benefit later. I’m proud to be part of the Cornerstone Society and I hope that by joining I can inspire others to remember Covenant House Missouri in their estate planning as well,” says Solverud. If you would like to learn more about joining the Cornerstone, please contact Suzanne Wagener, swagener@ covenanthousemo.org, or 314-450-7661.
Ebony’s Story Since coming to Covenant House, 19-year-old Ebony's life changed in ways she never could have imagined. "If you want to get somewhere in life, you just have to go for it. I took a chance. I just put God on my side," said Ebony. With an attitude like this, it is hard to believe that just four months ago, Ebony was homeless and without hope. Prior to being homeless, Ebony lived in New Orleans, Louisiana with her mother, who was in an abusive relationship. Ebony knew she needed to get away, but she didn't know where to turn. She saved as much money as she could to buy a ticket on the bus out of town. When she arrived in St. Louis, she met and befriended a Samaritan who allowed Ebony to stay in her home for a night. The next day, Ebony met another woman, told the woman about her situation, and the woman called the police. "They took me to this shelter, but it just didn't look right. I was really glad when I didn't have to stay there," she said. Fortunately, the police were able to get in touch with the staff at Covenant House Missouri, and Ebony entered their emergency crisis program. Ebony's biggest surprise when she arrived at Covenant House was how nice the living space was. She says, "It was not what I thought a shelter would be." Eventually, Ebony made the next step into the Transitional Living program. Ebony has accomplished more than she could have dreamed. "I've been working hard on my GED. I just have one more test to see if I get it, but I've taken the practice test," she said. "I am also working with the Garden Rangers as my job." Ebony now has goals for her future that include continuing to work toward her GED, keep her part time job, attending college and eventually becoming a registered nurse. "I just keep setting goals for myself. I feel like now I really have potential," she says. "I've had a lot of down times in my life, and since I've been here at Covenant House, things are coming around."

Our Mission We who recognize God’s providence and fidelity to His people are dedicated to living out His covenant among ourselves and those children we serve with absolute respect and unconditional love. That commitment calls us to serve suffering children of the street and to protect and safeguard all children. Just as Christ in His humanity is the visible sign of God’s presence among His people, so our efforts together in the covenant community are a visible sign of the presence of God, working through the Holy Spirit among ourselves and our kids.
