35,000! We're often asked how many photos our Ag Youth Photo Team shoots at OYE. Now you know. Over 35,000! Our team members just get more impressive each and every year. They use to just take photos. Now, many of them are involved in the whole process of editing and filing. All that behind-thescenes unglamorous work. And, there's just no quit to these kids.

This year's photo team consisted of 34 youth and young adults ranging from third grade through college seniors. Some of them where newbies; some of them more advanced with a few every having their own photography businesses. Many times we learn more from them than we have to teach to them. What do we charge for these photos. Zero. Nothing. They're free for you to download and use. Our subscribers and our advertisers offset the expenses of the Ag Youth Photo Team. So yes, it's important that you subscribe to Ag Youth Magazine. It's important that those who have livestock and businesses that need to market to families of agricultural youth advertise with us. All of y'all make the Ag Youth Photo Team possible. How does one get on the team? The first step is to read the September issue of Ag Youth Magazine for details.

Thanks to our 2022 team for all the hours of hard work they volunteered. Enjoy the photos in the magazine, on Facebook, and in our photo gallery at agyouth.com. Page 8 - APRIL/MAY 2022

The Last Remaining Stage Stop

By Maddux Mabry, Red Oak FFA Reporter This spring 41 members of the Red Oak FFA Chapter teamed up with The Edwards Store, Inc., a tax-exempt charitable organization, to work on an ongoing restoration project of the old Edward’s Store. The original structure, built in 1850 as a General Store and Trading Post, was opened by Thomas Edwards and Nancy Hardaway Edwards, who had recently married. In 1858, the store became a stage stop for individuals traveling on the newly established Butterfield Overland Mail Stage Line which operated between St. Louis and San Francisco transporting both the U.S. Mail and passengers. Twice a week a stage departed Fort Smith, Arkansas, headed to the Boggy Depot (located near present day Atoka, Oklahoma) with the Edwards Store serving as a brief stop where travelers were served their noon meal and teams were changed. Likewise twice a week, the East Bound Stages would stop at the store. In total, there were 139 relay stations, located roughly 20 miles apart, along the 2,800 miles route. Today, the Edwards Store is the last structure still standing in Oklahoma associated with the Butterfield Overland Mail Stage Line . Although the stage stop was closed in 1861 because of the Civil War, the store continued and the homestead expanded over time. Located at this site was the store, a kitchen and bedrooms, and in 1868 it became the first U. S. Post Office for Red Oak, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The original hand-hewn log structure was expanded to include an additional three rooms with the entire structure serving as a home for generations of descendants of the Edwards family. The store, located approximately eight miles northwest of Red Oak, Oklahoma, is a wonderful piece of history. “Having a small part in helping restore the Edwards Store has been a great experience for our FFA members” stated Leland Walker, Red Oak chapter advisor. On Thursday, Jan. 27, freshmen, sophomores and juniors took a short bus ride out to the Edwards Store and once there, were given gloves, masks, and tools. Students were divided into groups and went to work removing large objects such as rocks and lumber, sweeping up years of accumulated dust and debris and then removed the multiple layers of linoleum to expose the original wooden floors. FFA members were also provided trail mix, water and/or coffee, courtesy of an area church. On Friday, Jan. 28, the Agriculture Exploration and the Ag Power & Technology classes joined in on the preservation project by continuing the cleaning along with gathering and organizing the stones which were once used to support the porches around the structure. Students had the opportunity to visit with board members of The Edwards Store,

Inc. about the history of the structure and to enjoy the provided refreshments. As chapter reporter, “I personally had a wonderful time helping to preserve this piece of history and want to thank everyone who is working on this project, whether it be the FFA members who took a few hours of their day to help, or those who have worked to make this a National Historical Site and are now working hard to preserve it.” The Edward Store Inc. Board members present for the workdays were Ms. Chrissy Dickmeyer, a descendant of the Edwards-Hardaway family and the Chair of the Board of Directors of The Edwards Store, Inc., and Ms. June Chubbuck, member of the Board of Directors and Board Secretary.

By Sterling Stewart, Burlington FFA Reporter On November 29, the Burlington FFA Chapter and community members met in the Burlington Little Gymnasium to package food. This idea started with the Burlington FFA Chapter officers and advisor. We thought it would be worthwhile to get the chapter and community together for a good cause. Monte Stewart, founder of Stamp Out Starvation, began in 2007 in Cherokee, Oklahoma. This organization packages dry meals and sends them to various locations, specifically in Haiti. Our chapter and community packaged for two and a half hours and made 9,432 meals.

By Madison Nickels, Oklahoma 4-H State Council In February, the Oklahoma 4-H State Council held its third annual Winter Formal to raise funds to put toward their Change for Change goal of $17,000. There were around 80 4-H’ers in attendance. Wearing their fanciest party dress, or a very dashing bow tie, each partygoer's entrance fee was donated to the State Council’s Change for Change project. The fanciful night brought in over $1,300! “My favorite part of the Winter Formal was getting to see my 4-H friends that I do not get to see very often because of how far we live away from each other,” said Molly Bellew, a 4-H’er from Beaver County. “My favorite song was definitely ‘Fergalicious.’ We all got down to that one.” State Council members Haven Hinton and Murphy Peterson both agree that their favorite part of the formal was getting to interact with 4-H members from all across the state. They had a blast getting to meet people from all different parts of the state. “My favorite part of the dance was seeing the variety of people that attended! I think this was a very inclusive event that allowed 4-H’ers of many ages have fun,” said Pittsburg County 4-H’er Murphy Peterson. Avagrace Spencer from Oklahoma County had high reviews of the dance. “The music was my favorite thing about the Winter Formal. The songs played were some of the most popular songs from the 2010’s which is perfect for our age group,” Spencer said. Garfield County 4-H'er Madison Nickels said she enjoyed getting to see 4-H’ers in a formal setting. “It was fun seeing everyone in formal attire as opposed to our regular jeans. I was stoked when they played Cotton Eye Joe, as I love the line dances,” said Nickels. Many 4-H members had a great time dancing, singing and line dancing. An added bonus to having fun was raising money for a community service project that is important to them, which will have a direct impact on the lives of many families. Every county, club and 4-H’er is encouraged to go out and find ways to collect money for Change for Change. The possibilities are endless.

By Casyn Larman, Mulhall-Orlando FFA Reporter As the spring livestock show season came to an end, the Mulhall-Orlando FFA chapter’s hard work and dedication came shining through at the 2022 Oklahoma Youth Expo. Success at the Oklahoma Youth Expo is the pinnacle of every member’s dream when exhibiting livestock in Oklahoma. This year our chapter excelled in the breeding and market animal shows, and in the Ag Mechanics competitions. OYE started with the newly popular Ag Mechanics & Engineering Contest. Mulhall-Orlando FFA members Garret Perrin and Jace Taylor won 1st Place in their class and 4th in their division to qualify their project in the OYE Sale hosted by Big Iron auctions. This contest provides an opportunity for Oklahoma 4-H and FFA members to promote their skills through competition and receive recognition for their achievements. The livestock competitions started with the breeding animal shows. KayLea Taylor started the winning ways when she was selected Grand Champion in the Champion’s Tribute Doe Show. In the purebred ewe show, Callen Oldenburg had the Champion Suffolk and Champion Southdown ewe. Callen was ultimately selected as Reserve Grand Champion Ewe with his Southdown. In the beef heifer show, Denver McKay won Division Champion Junior Yearling with his Horned Hereford Heifer. The Mulhall-Orlando 4-H also had two of

their members make the Night of Stars Gilt Sale. Fletcher Inman made the sale with his 38th Overall Dark Cross Gilt. His brother Dax Inman made the sale as well with his 54th Overall Commercial Gilt. The M-O FFA show team kept up the winning ways in the market animal shows, and three members made the OYE Sale of Champions. Once again Callen Oldenburg found the purple ribbon, winning Breed Champion Suffolk Wether. Briley Harman placed 2nd with her Shorthorn steer and made the Sale of Champions as the 5th overall Shorthorn steer. The final member who made the sale was Lincoln Oldenburg with his Market Goat. Congratulations to all the exhibitors for their successes this spring!

Hey guys, it’s me Trenton. I just got back from OYE. I bet many of you probably showed there. Had lots of fun seeing lots of people and friends. A lot of us played football and basketball between showing our animals. When I got home, I went fishing and boy were they biting. Caught about 20 bass. It was really, really fun. It’s not prime fishing season, yet. We're just getting warmed up. The bass should be starting to spawn soon, and I can’t wait. A few more days and the water should be warm enough. The turkey numbers are short, but if you have a bunch of them, the season starts on April 16 this year. You can only shoot one gobbler in the state (Oklahoma). Youth season is the Saturday and Sunday before the 16th. Check the rules to see if there’s any other things that have changed since last year. I was looking in our big barn today and saw a trailer load of decoys. So, I asked my dad what it was, and he said it was one of his friends. He said I had to call him and ask him about them and I did. The guy was really nice and gave me the trailer load of all of the duck and geese decoys. I can’t wait till next fall. I am ready now with plenty of decoys. I am really excited. A lot of y’all knew that Papa and I had a bet

about which of my goats would place the highest at OYE. I knew I was right, and I won. We had made the bet way back in July. Papa now gets to take me to buy the fishing rod and reel of my choice. I promise you this is going to cost Papa. I did help out and host a 4-H outdoor wildlife classroom at Peckham Elementary School the other day. We did activities such as pine cone bird feeders, shooting BB guns, water safety, fire starting, and dog training. It was fun, and there was about 50 kids there. I like teaching workshops. School is starting to wind down. We are running track, and I'm practicing basketball. Can't wait for summer.

Let's Go Fishing!

By Emile Mittelstaedt On Wednesday, March 9, the Oklahoma Youth Expo crowned Woodland FFA and Frontier FFA with the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Ag Mechanics exhibits. With 152 entries, up 50 percent from 2021, the competition was greater and more intense than ever before, said contest superintendent, Jerry Renshaw. “Here we are in year three, and you can tell things are getting more challenging because of the ingenuity these kids possess,” Renshaw said. “It’s great to see the numbers and the sophistication of students’ projects grow because it shows how active they are within their chapters.” Projects are organized by category

and size, and they vary from wildlife displays, trailers, decorative pieces, and more. The Grand Champion exhibit, a tilt bed multi-axel trailer, was exhibited by Woodland FFA. Teammates were Josie Dossier, Landee Dossier, Trista Kelly and Danner Lessert. The Reserve Grand Champion exhibit of a grain tender, belonged to Brayden

Rexford of Frontier FFA. The Overall Bronze Medallion was Eric Quisenberry from Shattuck with his cattle working tub and alley. Participating students are able to learn basic skills such as welding, cutting, and fabricating metal, but they also build entrepreneurship and business skills by having the opportunity to market their services at the competition.

Shattuck FFA Attends OYE Ag Mechanics Contest By Ezabela Herber A group of Shattuck FFA Ag Mechanics students traveled to the Oklahoma Youth Expo Ag Mech contest in OKC on Tuesday, March 8. Eric Quisenberry, Jesus Hernandez, Bela Herber, Jarek Fitz, Tate Charmasson, Mason Magness, and Ellis County 4-H members Kelton and Keegan Spillman, competed with projects they’ve been working on for the past several months. This was the third year for the contest, and hundreds of students from across the state participated. Students were required to complete a portfolio, marketing flier, and interview process. Projects range from wildlife displays, trailers, decor, and more. Contest superintendent Jerry Renshaw said, “Adding this contest in addition to the livestock show presents more opportunities to ag programs across the state and adds yet another way for OYE to showcase the diverse talents and hard work of Oklahoma students.” From Shattuck, Keegan Spillman placed 3rd in his class, and Bela Herber was 3rd in her class, making the sale of projects. Jesus Hernandez was Reserve Champion in the “Ag Product” division, and Mason Magness and Tate Charmasson were Champions in the “Outdoor Recreation” Division. Eric Quisenberry was the Champion in the “Livestock” Division, and the Overall Bronze Medallion winner. Quisenberry was also featured on the OYE social media pages in a video over the amazing work he put into his project. Scan the QR code to see the video on Facebook.

Shattuck FFA President Sits on Nominating Committee By Emmie Swanson Shattuck FFA President Teagan Charmasson traveled to Oklahoma City Feb 11-13 to serve on the 2022 State FFA Officer Nominating Committee. Charmasson was one of only five FFA members chosen from across the state to sit on the committee, along with four adult members. This is quite an honor to be chosen, as these committee members are tasked with the important responsibility of choosing the FFA members that will become this year’s state FFA officer candidates. State Officer Candidates were tested over FFA knowledge, interviewed by the panel, and asked to present a prepared speech. At the conclusion of the weekend, the 2022 candidates from across the state were announced. Oklahoma FFA members will vote to elect the officers at FFA State Convention in Tulsa May 3-4. The 2022-2023 State Officer Candidates can be found at www.okffa.org.
