Editorial It’s 4:30 in the morning, and I have to admit I’m a little anxious. Why? Well, I’m in the parking lot behind the hotel in Duncan, Oklahoma, letting Daisy (my dog) exercise and eat. Anxious because, as you my friends know, it’s been since March 15th since I’ve seen a gathering of pickup trucks like this! Our friends! Double cab trucks and moms’ SUV’s have gathered in Duncan for the EYO, a show to replace the Oklahoma State Fair show weekend. Strolling through the barn yesterday didn’t seem like a let’s get stock ready and kick some butt day. It felt like a family reunion. I saw Bobo from Geronimo, my stock show buddy since 1978. I saw Jack Staats at a distance telling a story to a group of goat folks. I saw smiles galore. Today is show day and we’ll compete and compete hard. And yes, Ag Youth will take a bunch of candid photos of a lot a great kids. All of us are the winners this weekend because we call get to show. Thank you OYE for having a fall vision. Our kids deserve it! The parents need it! The rest of us just need a renewed faith that this is what we do. Happy Reunion! Now, LET’S GO SHOW! Page 4 - October 2020

By Clay Drake, Guthrie FFA Reporter This past July the Guthrie FFA officer team and the advisors had the pleasure of spending three days for our officer retreat planning upcoming events and activities for our chapter’s upcoming year. On the first day we met at the Ag building for our first work session, and started creating some goals we had for the chapter as well as our officer team. We also created our chapter mission statement for the year. Once we completed our first session we had lunch and headed to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum to learn more about that

Page 6 - October 2020

tragic event that stuck 25 years ago. Not only did we learn about this event we also reflected on our lives and our world today. It was a very humbling moment, because it shows how short and precious life really is. Once we were finished with our tour, we went to the Oklahoma Stockyards and had dinner at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse. After dinner we ventured to Red Door Escape Rooms. The team and advisors worked together to complete the mission that was given to us. We were successful in doing so and even had time to spare. To celebrate our success we finished the night with frozen yogurt.

Ag Youth Magazine - Braggin’ on Kids for 33 Years!

The second day we met in the morning and planned our program of activities for the chapter. That afternoon the officer team went to Edmond to get lunch had some time getting to know each other. That evening the team and advisors headed out to the Ron Plagg family’s home for a cookout and swim party. We would also like to thank the Guthrie High School Assistant Principal Dusty Throckmorton for cooking. On the final day of our retreat we spent the morning wrapping up our program of activities and other chapter business. We were then joined by the Ryan FFA officer team and advisor for a chapter visit and lunch. During the chapter visit each officer team presented information and facts about their chapter. Following lunch officers from both chapters worked on team building and leadership from the guidance of motivational speaker Bill Cordes. After this workshop with the Ryan FFA the Guthrie FFA officer retreat was concluded. agyouth.com

Go Ahead…Mess It Up By L.W. Peck As I sit in the parking lot at the EYO Fall Classic in Duncan, it’s a crisp morning with a beautiful sunrise and a cool breeze. The morning has that fall feel in the air. There’s no place I’d rather be than at a stock show. WRONG! Not this time of year. I have a lot I must do. Move deer stands, fill deer feeders and change their batteries, set up my trail cameras, try to find my SD cards that I stole from our Ag Youth Magazine cameras. What am I doing here? Yes, it’s that time if not a little late. Murf’s Guns here in Duncan is almost sold out of feeders. I’m not too late. The does are just starting to move after spending all spring and all summer doing what does do (having and raising babies). I’m going to share with you a really, really big pet peeve of my brother’s. He’s says that we’re going to do all this work to attract, take a pictures, locate a good deer. Then, I keep going back to “check on my cameras” so that we can see another picture of the same deer, a few little bucks, and the shooter. For some reason, the

shooter buck, trophy buck, whatever, finally quits coming to the area. Well friends, my brother is not an OSU wildlife biologist, but he has been in the field before even JD Strong of the Oklahoma Wildlife Commission was born. He knows wildlife! Here’s the reason you never see that good buck again. You scared him off. He lives 330 days and never sees, smells or hear you or your 4-wheeler. Then, you play macho, Mossy Oak, Bushnell, night vision I’m a great hunter guy! You don’t impress Mr. Trophy Buck. You made him move where you are not. So think about that! You invaded his home and he left. If you want to see him again and get a shot, stay out of his bedroom. Be smarter than him! Or if you like to show your buddies his picture on October 5 then gripe that you never seen again in November then keep goofing around and checking the camera. Rant over! Drop the Mic! Off my high horse! I’m tired of making the “check the camera mistake” every year, but I probably will. Send me your pics.

Let’s go hunting!

TRENTON’S POST Hey Guys. It’s me Trenton. I’m writing my article while traveling down the road to the EYO show in Duncan. Thank you to the OYE team for hosting this show. I am excited to see my friends, and Papa said there will be a bunch of stock there. Last month when we talked, I told you I was going dove hunting. We haven’t seen a lot of dove here, but I have shot a few. I found a spot at my house where I could sit on top of hay bales and look for dove. I cooked the dove the other night. I started by marinating them in Worcestershire sauce and BBQ sauce in a baggie for about a day. Then, I started our Traeger smoker and set it for 350 degrees. Once it was ready, I put the dove on the smoker for about 20 minutes. My dad said they tasted like steak bites. They were good. My animals are all growing and getting big. I still have need to break some goats. I’m excited for Tulsa and the American Royal even if I have to wear a mask while there. I know some of you are bummed that the Denver Stock Show canceled. I know my buddy Tanner is bummed he won’t get to show his steer there. COVID has affected so much this year. But on a good note, we have learned to wash our hands all the time and the importance of our friends and families. See you down the road.
