meet the 2016 judges Guy Laflin, of St. Ignatius, MT, will be judging the Open

Show in Main Arena 2, the “Fairest of Them All” Show, and also helping in the Pen Show. He takes none of it for granted and knows all this is possible today because of hard work, determination, family unity, and a dream that is more than 100 years old. For five generations, the Laflin family has known the ranching way of life and passed down the values and respect for the land and livestock that go with it. Guy’s great-grandfather, E.B., established the Laflin Angus herd in 1900, and was one of the first breeders in the state of Nebraska. Today, the herd spreads out on the Flint Hills of Kansas and is now the second oldest registered Angus herd in the United States. Guy has done a great deal of judging in numerous states and at a National level. In addition, he has shown animals in the United States, Canada, and Argentina. Guy is looking forward to working with staff and participants at this year’s North Star Classic.

Wayne Olrich, of Norfolk, NE, will be judging the Pen Show, the Showmanship, and the “Fairest of Them All” Show, and also helping in the Open Show and Junior Show as well.

Barb Olrich, of Norfolk, NE, will be judging the Junior Show in Main Arena 2 and the Showmanship. Wayne and Barb own and operate a purebred cattle operation located at Norfolk, Nebraska. Our operation consists of Angus, Simmy Angus, Maine Angus, and ChiAngus cows. We currently have three sales a year. The first Saturday in February we hold our annual bull sale at our place. In the fall we host two online sales, selling steers and heifers. Cattle sell from coast to coast. We usually offer a set of replacement females private treaty in the fall too. We have exhibited cattle all across the country. Raising top quality cattle is our passion. We have raised, fitted, and shown many national champion females as well as bulls. For three consecutive years we raised and showed the champion pen of three Maintainer bulls at the National Western Stock Show. Both Wayne and Barb have been named Chianina herdsman of the year. Visitors are welcome at our place anytime in northeast Nebraska.

Chris Polzin, of Darwin, MN, will be judging the Open

Show in Main Arena 1 and also helping in the Pen Show, at this year’s North Star Classic. Chris grew up raising Simmental cattle with his family. After graduating from college Chris started raising Charolais cattle. After marrying his wife Leslie, they began Polzin Cattle, which is an embryo center in Darwin, MN, in 2008. Along with raising Charolais they also have Hereford, Red Angus, and Simmental donors. Polzin Cattle prides itself on making high quality females and industry leading bulls. He is a member of the University of Minnesota, which also includes the general livestock judging team. He enjoys any and every opportunity to judge, and he shows throughout all of North America. Along with his wife helping with the company, they have two daughters, Brooke and Desirae, and a son, Colton, who have enjoyed being around cattle as well.

Shawn Varner,

of Kearney, MO, will be judging the Junior Show in Main Arena 1 this year. The Malta Bend, Missouri native is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, where he was on the livestock judging team. He has judged livestock shows at the local, state, and national level all across the United States, including at the National Western Stock Show and the American Royal. He also raises, buys, and sells livestock across the nation. He now works for Syngenta as a Seed Advisor Manager.

2016 nsc junior events Once again, there will be a number of activities for juniors at the North Star Classic! Saturday’s events will begin with a few different contests at 8 am in the main arena, followed by a Weavers Fitting Clinic at 10 am. Again this year, a VitaFerm Nutritional Clinic will follow the fitting clinic, at 11 am, and at Noon, the “Fairest of Them All” Show is scheduled. This show will feature overall grand champion heifers from any fair, achievement days, or ND Junior Point Show in ND, in 2016, all competing for the chance to win the “Fairest of Them All” title and a $750 prize! More information on this show can be found online, at www.northdakotawintershow.com. The cattle sales will then be in the afternoon and evening on Saturday and showmanship will once again be that night, at 7 pm. On Sunday, the Junior Breed Shows, the Overall Supreme Heifer Show and the Ag Country Junior Market Steer and Heifer Showdown are all scheduled, with the breed shows beginning at 8 am. This year we welcome judges, Shawn Varner, from Kearney, MO and Barb Olrich, from Norfolk, NE, to judge the Junior Shows. All junior show entries will be automatically entered to win a variety of prizes, courtesy of Wagon Wheel Inn and Tavern 94, so the more you enter, the better your chance! Great prizes will be awarded to exhibitors of the champion heifers, in each breed class, as well as to the showmanship champions in each age division. Thank you to Ray Haugen, of Silver Creek Ranch, for once again sponsoring a portion of these prizes! All Grand Champion Heifers will advance to the Overall Junior Supreme Heifer Show, where both a Grand and Reserve Heifer will be chosen, with special thanks going to John Deere Seeding Group, for sponsoring these champion heifer premiums. The Ag Country Junior Market Steer & Heifer Showdown is again the last event on Sunday. This show is managed by the NDSU Judging Club and the NDSU Saddle & Sirloin Club, with pay-outs given to the top four winners in each class, as well as to the top four market animals overall.

If you would like additional information on any of the junior events, please call the NDWS office at 1-800-437-0218, or email ndws@northdakotawintershow.com.

2016 livestock honorees William (Bill) Hill, of Valley City, ND, is one of

this year’s Livestock Honorees. He is a fourth generation Barnes County resident living North of Valley City about 8 miles on a farm purchased by his great grandfather in 1875 from the NP Railroad. He attended a one room schoolhouse in Getchell, ND, where he has spent 50 years of his life as a Getchell Township board member. He then graduated high school in Valley City in 1948. He started college at Valley City State University, but quit to go farming after his father froze to death in 1949 in a North Dakota blizzard. During this time he met a red-headed Norwegian, named Earlis, from Nome, ND, fell in love and married her in 1954. He spent time in the armored division for the United States Army, in Kentucky, Missouri, and Puerto Rico for two years. Bill then came back to farming and quit doing so around 1980 when he then rented out his land to a neighbor. He has been involved with livestock all of his life. He worked at many livestock sale barns in the area, then wound up employed by the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association as a brand inspector in Jamestown, Edgeley, West Fargo, and Valley City. He was recognized for 50 years of service in September 2016. One of Bill’s hobbies included hunting in his younger years, but antique tool collecting became his main activity in the last years. He currently has over 500 wood-working planes in his collection as well. He was active in the Eagles Club, on a local and state level, and as well as the Amvets on a local, state, and national level. He spent 10 years in the 4-H Club and a couple of years with the FFA in Valley City, and

received numerous awards. He also spent 10 years as a load coordinator for Fat Lamb Buying Station, which is the largest buying station in a 4-state region, out of Baraboo, Wisconsin. He loaded 10,000 fat lambs out of the state of North Dakota alone in 1980. His wife, Earlis, passed away in 2008 after 54 years of marriage, resulting in 5 daughters, who all reside within the state, and 5 grandchildren. Bill likes to say he is presently retired, but still keeps very busy working “parttime” actually, 35 hours a week, at Valley Meat Supply, where he has been associated with for over 40 years.

Dr. Andrew Peterson, Enderlin, ND, is one of

this year’s Livestock Honorees. He grew up on a farm near Hunter, North Dakota. He graduated from Hunter High School and then attended North Dakota State University. He then attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 1969. Dr. Peterson spent two years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. He then came back to North Dakota and was employed as a veterinarian in Park River, ND and Lisbon, ND. In 1975 he started the Enderlin Veterinary Clinic and continues to practice mixed animal Veterinary Medicine. He is married and has three daughters and three grandsons. He is a charter member of the Enderlin Lions Club. He is also a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Veterinary Medical Association, North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, and the Society of Theriogenology.

Join us as we recognize Bill Hill and Dr. Andrew Peterson, in the main arena on Friday, December 2nd, at 4 pm. 10

This extra classy female is out of a first calf heifer that goes back to the Becker’s foundation TC Freedom Cow. The Princess cow family has been extremely productive for the Beckers, with progeny being the reserve champion bull in Denver and the Hot Lotto bull selling to Hamilton Angus in Canada. Hot Lotto was one of the popular display bulls in 2015 at the yard in Denver. He is currently carried at Cattle Visions. Show heifers and producing dams have been a mainstay of this line of females at BSF. Beckers would like to retain one future flush at their expense. Opportunity knocks.

The Nord family has been very successful in presenting show quality females that are sound and productive. The heifer they are offering is one of the most sure footed and flexible you will find. Along with her structural integrity, she is massive in her rib cage, stout pinned and still very flat and angular when you study her shoulder design. We all know how valuable longevity is in today’s industry, and Nords Blackcap 6039 has the soundness and correctness to be a long term brood cow after her show career. Nords Blackcap 6039 - Lot 10

VIN-MAR Mr Jones was selected as the popular and high selling Angus bull in the 2013 Black Hills Stock Show. He has proven to be an extremely prepotent sire that produces big ribbed, robust, thick sons and high volume, shapey females that are great uddered and sound. Soo Line Motive, the maternal grandsire, is a Canadian bred bull that was popular for his thickness, natural volume and balance. His daughters have been stellar producers. Prairie Pride hadn’t planned on selling this big topped, attractive female, but she should be a brood cow deluxe for her new owner.

Jungels Shorthorn Farm is proud to offer pick of 2 of their 2016 heifer calves, or, 1 bred heifer, buyers choice. Pick of the females has never before been offered on our herd. To support this event, we are opening the gates to the future, with over 120 heifer calves and 50 bred heifers to pick from. JSF retains the right to flush any female picked at their cost and buyers convenience. This program has dominated the Shorthorn Bull market over the last decade, landing bulls with major AI studs, numerous purebred operations, and commercial producers seeking to improve maternal heterosis. To date, JSF bulls are breeding cows in over 30 states, 4 Canadian provinces, and numerous foreign countries via AI. While people recognize our program due to the success of our bulls, our females are the factory. Their pasture production speaks for itself with our breed leading bull and female sales, but, it should also be noted that we have exhibited numerous county fair and jackpot champions, State Fair Champions, Shorthorn Junior National Class Winners, a Reserve Cow-Calf Pair at the National Jr. Heifer Show, and 3 Supreme Champion Females at the North Star Jungels Shorthorn Farm Classic/North Dakota Winter Show. Here is a heifer with the combination of cow power and show ring appeal as she was selected class winner at this years MN Beef Expo. 623D is a sound structured, massive bellied, great footed heifer with tons of muscle shape as well. These things come from the combination of two of the nations most popular bulls. NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y & TH 75J 243R Bailout 144U. Best Hereford heifer we at L83 Ranch have ever raised.

Our heifer consignment is all sired by “Red Baron”. He produces smooth fronted, easy fleshing & calving ease females with beautiful udders. She is dark red and short marked. This heifer’s dam we purchased out of Hoffman’s 2013 Female Sale. Her first calf we sold in the 2014 NSC Sale to the Donnelly Family in MN that became 2015 Champion MN 4-H Steer.

Tessier lady 606D a Sensation 028X daughter is level topped with a big middle and narrow smooth shoulder in a moderate frame. Her dam is one of our berry land and livestock dams who goes back to CRR About time 743. She moves freely and will make someone a great brood cow for years to come. She is short marked with good pigment. We have liked this mating enough to breed her dam the same way for the 3rd year in a row she never misses a beat. Sire of Lot 20 - Churchill Sensation 028X
