BENEFITS

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

Preservation - Can be used to treat dry or moist grain (14-22% moisture). Protein - Ammonia is a source of nitrogen and therefore potential protein which rumen microbes synthesise into microbial protein. Typically increases the crude protein of grain by 3-4.5% thus reducing requirement for bought-in feeds. pH - Produces grain with pH 8.5-9.5 which helps to buffer rumen pH and improves feed intake whilst avoiding digestive disfunction.

Norvite has a team of nutritionists and feed advisers to provide a full support package including feed analysis, rationing formulation and feed advice. ALpHA is available in 25kg bags. For convenience on farm treatment packs are available as follows: ALpHA 25 (375kg Urea + 125kg ALpHA) to treat 25 tonnes of grain ALpHA 50 (750kg Urea + 250kg ALpHA) to treat 50 tonnes of grain.

PRACTICAL SOLUTION Can be used to preserve a range of grains (barley, maize, oats and wheat). Applicable for natural grain at harvest (moist) for dried grain throughout the year (with the addition of water to activate urease enzyme). ALpHA grain can be fed safely to all stages of cattle. Dairy Cattle (lactating): up to 8kg/head/day Dairy Cattle (youngstock): up to 4kg/head/day

Beef Cattle (finishing): ad lib Beef Cattle (growing): up to 4kg/head/day

Ensure mineral supplements account for Non-Protein Nitrogen (NPN) and that the diet is adequately balanced with sulphur.

ALpHA - ENHANCED GRAIN PRESERVATION

Following two years of development and successful farm trials Norvite has launched their new alkaline pH additive brand - ALpHA. This announcement was made as harvest approaches fast with early winter crops already cut. Edward Smith, Norvite’s Managing Director, put the development in context; “For the past twenty years Norvite has made a feature of moist grain in our blended 25/07/2019 feeds.22:01During this time we have strongly advocated the use of propionic acid to preserve grain at around 20% moisture. This moist cereal is processed more consistently and produces a better physical blend than dried barley, but the main benefit is a safer feed which improves digestion and enhances livestock performance. Alkaline treatment is also a very effective preservative of moist grain but has additional advantages. These are key to this alkaline system of adding value to homegrown grain: the addition of nitrogen augments crude protein content and reduces the necessity of bought-in feeds. We believe that a more significant benefit is a high pH which helps to buffer, or stabilise, the rumen at a healthy pH - even in diets with a very high cereal content.” “There is a clear demand for this type of grain preservation and feeding system. We are delighted to be in a position to add ALpHA to our product offering. I am particularly pleased that ALpHA has been developed by our own team and is manufactured at our Wardhouse plant. As manufacturers we have greater control over product quality which provides advantages in sourcing and supply that are key to our business strategy.” Alkali treatment of cereal is based on the addition of urea which in the presence of urease, the active ingredient in ALpHA, produces ammonia gas in moist conditions. The Norvite technical team, led by David McClelland, have honed the enzyme package in ALpHA to ensure consistent reaction with the urea in a range of moisture levels. Crude protein and pH have been assessed on a number of farms in Aberdeenshire and the Scottish Borders to validate the effectiveness and robustness of ALpHA treatment in real farm situations. Ian Watson of Borders-based Performance Feeds has collaborated with Norvite as an agent since 2017. David paid tribute to Ian’s enthusiasm for alkali cereal having had more than seven years trading a variety of enzyme treatments from the UK and France, “Ian has a wealth of experience dealing with the practicalities of treating cereal with urea. ALpHA is a very effective product but, like all natural reactions, it must be used appropriately to ensure the best results. Ian has worked with the technical team and with Ross Williams, Norvite’s Commercial Manager, to create a clear set of instructions and guidelines on how to get the best out of this treatment. ALpHA treated barley fed to commercial bulls on a Borders farm recorded consistent growth of 1.8kg daily liveweight gain. We are confident ALpHA delivers benefits as a cereal treatment and for livestock performance.”

Wendy writes August 2019 BUSY GOING NOWHERE Not a lot to report this month, initially I was moved from the mechanical repair ward to the one for long term sick at the ABW hospital. There I sat outside waiting for Graham to engineer the shafts and new gearbox that I need to return to the job I love. Sadly a combination of other patients requiring urgent surgery, a need for specialized tools and Graham taking a well earned holiday has delayed my return to the field. I am assured that I should be back working within the next two weeks (no pressure Andy putting it in print!!) The monotony of staring into the side of a building at Charlesfield estate was relieved when he came to collect me for the Saturday morning of the Boswells Show. I was parked up in the line-up of vintage tractors, I’m not sure they see me as one of their own and I find it hard to understand their sense of humour. They make jokes about me behind my backend which I think is a little below the sump and as far as I can make out as they whisper and giggle and are really not very funny. I am classed as an agricultural machine, I am 64 years old and in every way I am a vintage tractor. I came away with a yellow rosette awarded to those who were out of the top three. We paraded around the ring me at the back as usual. I listened with amusement to Charlie McCririck’s description of the line-up, his knowledge of the tractors is extensive, but he does struggle with my finer details. I was home for four days then off to the Border Union. As usual I was parked at the end of the I Agrimart stand, feeling slightly left out of the comings and goings. I let my feelings known and on Saturday morning I was moved into the centre where I was able to engage fully with all the friends who came to see me. It was a Wendy joy to see so many going round with “I love Wendy” stickers. And now I am back home waiting for the call to come saying the parts are ready for a transplant. It can’t come too soon as I have a feeling in my chassis that there could be more than one combine to rescue if the rain continues like Manoeuvring into position at it has this week. the Border Union Show SANDYSTONES

Greater output with lower power requirement. The ESPRO seed drills combine tilling, levelling and seeding in one pass to ensure regular field emergence after the plough as well as in min-till conditions. Talking.........Arable

August 4th 2019

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Frustration! That one word sums up my feelings for this month, and this is for two different reasons. Firstly the weather and consequently the potato fields are nicely wet. Unfortunately the rain only appeared after we had completed the irrigation for scab control, typical! Still, irrigation equipment in Scotland is like insurance, a necessary evil when you are growing ware potatoes, and at least I got a good farmers tan out of it! The rain wasn’t all good though as some of the extremely heavy showers have caused a bit of soil erosion on slopes in potato fields. I think for the future I need to look at something to help control this, maybe a tied ridger of some sort. Given the amount of irrigation we carry out this would be useful in all years as it would reduce erosion and also retain water better within the field. Secondly, seeing the neighbours out and about cutting winter barley, while we are still a week away from anything being ready (I’m writing this on the 4th of August), grates a little bit. Admittedly it has been a catchy year for cutting at this time of year with frequent small showers and some torrential downpours. In addition feed barley isn’t the most wildly profitable crop, but at least it would spread the harvest a bit more. It has to be said though that these frustrations will hopefully be worth it, the potatoes are looking quite good, there is the inevitable “fleck” of scab in parts of fields but tuber numbers and yields are looking ok so far. All of the Maris Peer (16Ha) has been burnt down now, so this will be ready to lift about the same time as the wheat will be getting cut! The cereals have had enough moisture now to give a good yield but could do with some sunshine to fill the grains and MOTOR ENGINEER finish things off. There also appears to be a decent amount Tel: 07506 516381 or 01890 830243 (home) of straw this year. Specialising in servicing and repairs to Range Rover, Discovery, All we need now is some decent harvest weather or I’ll be Land Rover and other 4 x 4 vehicles. writing about even more frustration next month. On Our Farm

August 6th 2019 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 6000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant & partidge poults are raised. The last month seems to have flown by and I can’t believe that we are in the first week of August already. We kicked off the month with the wedding of my cousin Laura near St Boswells. It was great fun and the weather was fantastic. Our house was bursting at the seams with cousins, nieces and nephews, all up for the weekend. The following week was spent in Menorca with Jess’s parents and her family. What a beautiful island Menorca is with its warm turquoise sea and rugged unspoilt coastline. The holiday was a great success and the children loved it despite Jess tearing her calf muscle on the first morning! Unfortunately we were not back in time for the St Boswells Show however from all reports it was a great success and congratulations to Robert and Robbie Bruce from Pinnacle on retaining the much coveted Longnewton cup. The Border Union Show was busy once again despite the horrendous weather on Saturday morning. It was good to see so many of you on our stand and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. A special Busy week on the farm before the Packed Agrimart stand at the Border Union Show rain came! thank you to Neil Thomson and his team for another fantastic show. My three children absolutely loved it there was so much for them to do from milking a cow, to watching dancing pigs and picking tatties. Harvest has only just got underway here and already it has become Recycle all your farm plastic a very stop start affair. We finally finished the winter barley last Thursday and got all the straw baled by the weekend before the from £125 per year rain came. It yielded 8.25t/ha which is OK and above our five year average. I have heard reports of feed barley locally averaging over Woodcock Contracting has a 10t/ha which is seriously impressive. This year there will certainly be no shortage of straw. Already our straw barn is a third full and solution for your recycling needs we have only cut 20ha of winter barley! The swaths behind the 20ft header we so big that the tractor and baler were struggling to cope. I don’t know how people can bale behind the bigger combines this year. • Seed bags • Fert bags As I write the rain is once again hammering against the office • Spray cans • Cardboard window. In the last three days alone we have had 50mm of rain and the worst is yet to come this weekend. Both harvest and pheasant All recycled deliveries have firmly ground to a halt. Hopefully next week the weather improves slightly and we can re-start pheasant deliveries. As Low cost farmer friendly services from a for harvest the long range forecast does not make for pretty reading. company with 12 years experience I hope I am proved wrong but it looks like we are set for a pretty wet August. However we should probably not be surprised as August at Sandystones is historically one of the wettest months of the year. Contact Mark on 07773 779921 On a positive note at least Wendy might have something to do after High capacity mobile her expensive makeover and trip to hospital! I really hope that the weather does improve and everyone gets their bruising/crimping available harvest completed in good time.

Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. After my nerves had played havoc with my stomach for 3 days I got the “all clear nod” of acceptance from the department of agriculture vet, leaving us able to trade freely again as TB has hopefully cleared off again for now. While I am thankful that it hasn’t cost us too dearly, I have been reminded how stressful it can be on man and beast. I don’t want to become complacent as it is still a very rife and troublesome disease with very few long term answers or protocols. As I am not a public speaker in any way I can’t say much, but those within position and unions should be creating a fuss and an even bigger fuss until the root cause of the disease is eradicated. With July being a record month for grass growth and shooting/heading dates now past, it is leaving grazing management very easy with large intakes at the moment. We have missed sowing fertilser on different portions of ground within this rotation, which is helping the bottom line, but more fertiliser will be sown this week with the autumn wedge of grass in mind. We are trying to minimise the amount that will have to be cut, as we will soon be full up of silage and we don’t want an annoying amount of round bales. Drying off will commence this week, which could be challenging due to the amount of flies around. As ground is dry at the moment, restricting intakes on high ground should speed up the process. These first ones to be dried off are too fleshy so winter barley stubble and restricted haylage will be on the menu. Winter barley harvesting has gone quite well with good grain and plenty of straw. With the straw being very green it made it hard on the combine and probably caused a little grain loss over the back of the combine. Having said all of that it will be good to get back on to our own grain as we bought in a load of grain which was nowhere near up to scratch and cost us at the milk cheque end. Another load came from a neighbour and was much more satisfactory. Stock in general is doing well with most management being up to date. The March born calves remain the weakest, so as the calving pattern hasn’t tightened any for 2019/2020, this will remain the challenge for yet another season. There are 3 breeding bulls for sale now and I realise it is out of season a little but I’m hoping their mother’s will help to sell them anyway. If nothing else it might be a chance to get to know a new customer or catch up with an existing one.

Blinkbonny Kwik Mix

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. It is with a level of sadness that I have to write about TB this month. Due to a TB reactor and following a positive culture test there are now two areas in the county that find themselves within a 3km radial. Never before has there been radial testing in Northumberland and some of us now find ourselves in one of them. Having been TB4 previously, we are now in a period of intense testing over the next six weeks, the next 6 months and then a further 12 months after. It is a period of belts and braces testing for everything over six weeks old. Perversely, these will now be some of the safest cattle to buy in the country. Both APHA vets and Sarah Tomlinson from Westpoint Farm Vets in Ashbourne (a member of the TB Eradication and Advisory Group for England) agreed that TB was/is only going to come to Northumberland on the back of a wagon. This really is a wakeup call to all of us, that we need to take responsibility on how we trade, not only for our own cattle’s health, but our neighbour’s cattle and the wildlife. Risky trading should be seen as socially unacceptable. The impact TB can have on businesses can be both financially and emotionally crippling and the extra burden can be overwhelming. Businesses that trade in stock from TB areas should be making it common practice to ask when the farm and sale stock last had a reactor, as the longer a herd is clear the more you can trust the result. Assessing where stock has been during its whole life should also be common sense prior to purchase, not just where it’s last been. The reactor for this particular breakdown was found in a 10 year old cow that had been born and bred in the county and had passed previous testing. This farm only buys in breeding bulls and the likelihood is that the beast came into contact with stock from outside the county. With this scenario it really could have happened to any of us on our usual TB4 test. Health planning needs to include TB. We are now all getting up to speed on buying stock that are tested for BVD and Johnes, for example. We need to enquire about the TB status as well. A useful source of information can be found on the TB hub which includes the risk map. As Scotland is officially TB free, Northumberland is a useful buffer to protect our near neighbours too. Ten years ago, Oxfordshire had a similar TB level to ourselves and now it has the highest level of TB in the country and is struggling to contain TB both in cattle and in its wildlife. We should take this disease seriously and protect against it. We are lucky enough to have healthy cattle and wildlife at present and need to maintain that. It is in ALL our own hands to keep our county clear of TB. 44

Now offering Regrooving of old concrete. Kincraig, 9 Broompark, Kelso TD5 7SN

August 4th 2019 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. I’ve been persuaded to run as a candidate for election to our regional council. Our regional councils here are responsible for all things to do with water, the environment, air quality, bio-security and transport. An eclectic mix of subjects but ones I’m told I just happen to be well qualified to have opinions on. Having reluctantly agreed to run I’ve discovered that I’ve now entered the slightly dodgy arena of politics where I’ve been told I can’t be rude about people and not to mention the Jews. The latter occurred when I was tempted to liken our current government’s persecution of farmers to the sort of treatment the Jews have suffered over the centuries; that is being blamed for everything and anything that has ever gone wrong in society. I felt qualified to comment as my Jewish great great grandfather Mendelson had escaped some progrom in Russia to come to New Zealand where he became a very successful businessman Big Jase drafting cows to send early calves back down to the and reportedly died the richest man in NZ. Unfortunately his son in law, my great grandfather devoted himself dairy farm successfully to spending his wife’s entire inheritance. Persecuting Mendelson and his fellow Jews in Russia didn’t solve Russia’s problems any more than persecuting us farmers in NZ is going to solve climate change or homelessness in Auckland (just some of the things Jacinda blames us for). Apparently a new tax on fertiliser to pay for a mass transit system in Auckland will save the planet. So I’m trying to be nice to people and not offend anyone especially Jacinda and the Russians, or Aucklanders for that matter, but I have drawn the line at kissing babies; and their mothers are apparently off limits too. We have been trying to come up with a campaign slogan. One Buyer of Steel and Non Ferrous Metals suggestion was pictures of the Boss looking slightly annoyed saying “Vote For Ian I want Him Out Of The House”, but I COLLECTION SERVICE AVAILABLE favour featuring my pigs and a slogan that might say “vote for Competitive Prices Paid Ian he knows his bacon”. Like all good politicians it hints at BEST PRICES IN THE BORDERS something deep and meaningful but is in fact totally fatuous. I’ll let you know how I get on. Talking.........Business with Edwin Thompson

August 2019

Kate Jenkins is a dual chartered rural surveyor and planner with Edwin Thompson, based in Galashiels. Kate is pleased to have recently joined the company after ten years in private practice as a rural planning and development consultant. The Planning (Scotland) Bill has just received Royal Assent to become the Planning (Scotland) Act 2019, following extensive political wrangling over proposed measures to improve and simplify the planning system. This is, therefore, a timely opportunity to look at the opportunities and changes which will affect the rural sector. Local Development Plans (LDP) continue to be a key part of the “Development Plan”, the basis for planning decisions, but will run on ten yearly cycles as opposed to the current five years. Competition between potential sites will increase since the opportunity to promote land will arise less often so it is crucial for those seeking their land to be allocated to engage early on. Plan-making will continue to be a front-loaded process, reaffirming the need for early engagement. The status of the National Planning Framework (NPF) will be elevated to become part of the “Development Plan”. NPF4, once developed, will be relevant at a local level with the inclusion of housing land targets set by Scottish Ministers; these previously being set by local authorities. Interestingly, the Framework will include an aspiration to resettle rural areas that have become depopulated. Before preparing an LDP, planning authorities must now invite local communities to prepare a Local Place Plan to set out their priorities for development. Landowners should be aware of the LPP’s content as they can affect how planning applications are decided. Other important matters include the new ‘forest and woodland strategies’ which will have to be prepared by Councils and the new infrastructure levy which needs to be watched closely as plans become clearer. Lastly, it is likely that permitted development rights will be revisited so this could bring about change. There are key areas where anticipated change has not, however, materialised: • Proposed changes to appeal rights have been dropped, meaning communities are unable to appeal against planning approvals where proposals do not accord with the development plan. • More robust green belt protection measures have been dropped. • Proposals for land value capture have been removed but will likely evolve in time as the Government examines the Scottish Land Commission’s report. Despite the aim to simplify the planning system, we are in a period of change and complexity where independent and balanced advice will be invaluable. Edwin Thompson offers the experience needed to ensure development interests are nurtured in the changing ‘planning landscape’. Should you wish to discuss any planning related matters please contact Kate Jenkins - Galashiels 01896 751300 50

August 7th 2019

I have never seen grass grow like it has this year. Not that I actually mow the lawn but I seem to be constantly putting petrol in Philly’s Countax. There is such an abundance of silage and hay that there will be a limited market for any surplus. This combined with a very weak cattle market makes producing forage fed beef an unrewarding pastime. Markets rise and fall, and in the past one could bank on prices increasing after a period of Guy Lee low returns but I feel there is something fundamentally different this time. The consuming public have picked up a message that methane produced from ruminants is a major contributor to global warming and with other information put out by health agencies that consumption of red meat Plentiful supplies of grass is not always good for your well being has really cast doubts on a nation ever more conscious of what they eat. The results are falling demand and a serious carcase imbalance. Beef will always be on the menu but along with many other protein choices. What this means for a country where the largest land use is grassland and where the only other option is forestry is a worrying prospect. As finishers of store cattle we live on the margin between buying and selling, but it is essential that the breeder receives a fair and profitable return or what’s the point of all their investment, risk and hard work. Maybe I am proved wrong, the price will rise and the current depressed market is caused by an intense export of Irish beef pre Brexit and other external factors. I do hope so as it gives one no job satisfaction to send a load of quality cattle only to be paid little more than the buy price. The last two weeks in July are busy with shows. On the third Saturday we have the local St Boswells Show which is primarily a ‘horsey’ event put on and run by a stalwart of local farmers. Showing sheep was a large feature of the show until the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 prohibited any livestock being present. In 2017 sheep classes were reintroduced and two years later it is very satisfying to see over 80 entries. We also have vintage tractors, stationary engines as well as the presentation of the prizes for the Stock and Crop competition which is very well supported with almost 20 fields to be judged in the wheat class. The following weekend is the Border Union Show where we take a stand. Friday was a very hot day, but unfortunately Saturday was accurately forecast as being extremely wet in the morning which undoubtedly did not encourage the public to come to the show in huge numbers. There were a lot of attractions for all ages and our grandchildren had a wail of a time. Shows are an important part of the rural calendar and a great opportunity for farmers to show what and how we produce food on the land in our community. It was great to see Duncan Mackenzie last week. He is the younger brother of Ian our New Zealand correspondent. We dug out our family tree, titled the Mackenzies of Jamaica and discovered much to our amazement that we are both descended from John Mackenzie of Ord who died in 1644. That makes us 12th cousins! I immediately sent Ian an email saying ‘You can choose your friends’. Our parents were great friends, I think they would have been amazed to find out that we are related. Duncan Mackenzie 52

August 5th 2019

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. We certainly picked the right day for the farm judging. The sun was out, all the crops and livestock looked well; so well in fact that I thought I had missed a trick in buying a farm in lowly Lincolnshire and should have continued up the A1 to the Borders. All the talk of high yields and low herbicide costs had me primed to accost the nearest man in mustard/plum corduroy trousers and instruct him to buy me a farm. As I sit here writing this with the rain falling steadily outside feeling grumpy that I am losing quality with every drop, it won’t be long before the Siskin decides to start shedding and the combine hasn’t turned a wheel for 10 days. It is starting to feel like a “Scottish” harvest. So the next job today is to order some drying fuel. The oilseed rape harvest was a disappointment but not a disaster. The average will be about 3.5t/ha which is 0.5t/ ha below my average, BUT the blackgrass control was superb and it only received one fungicide all year. Having previously not grown OSR because of blackgrass when using a subsoiler for establishment, having a fallow instead, this new establishment method will at least produce a positive margin and allow greater margins elsewhere in the rotation. Flea beetle on the The sheer number of flea beetle though is a massive cause of concern. At one stage we thought the rape was trying grainstore floor to escape out of the shed, but it was just the flea beetle moving around. The pressure on the new crop could well be huge, but I will hold off any planting decisions until closer to the planting date and I will assess conditions then. The new combine has a remarkable appetite, with 52ha and two 5 mile moves being our record day so far… In fact I did revisit my costings spreadsheet just to double check the numbers (a bit late now I know) as I was done in a few days and my neighbours with their brand new combines were still cutting long into the early hours. But the numbers don’t lie so we will keep whizzing along and the slightly frazzled look of the cartmen at the end of the day does suggest I am getting my money’s worth from them! This week should be D-Day for the new cultivator. I have this sinking feeling that delivery will not be on Combining oilseed rape time given the fabricators take a week off at the end of July for “odd jobs” but everything is crossed in hope. Whilst it is a shame not to have had the ex-OSR land cultivated before the change in weather, a couple of good days will allow me to soon catch up. And this poor weather should allow us to put the machine together without interrupting harvest. Lets see…
