OCTOBER 2019

W L Douglas & Son are based near Berwickupon-Tweed in North Northumberland. This business has seen rapid growth in the last several years resulting in a grain drying requirement of some 25,000 tonnes. Partner Ian Douglas approached the Calibrate Energy Engineering team to look at ways they could speed up and streamline their grain drying and cooling process. It was agreed that Calibrate’s 1mW Heatpump HeatChill system seemed like the perfect fit for their 40t/hr Continuous Grain drying system. The Results The first site of its kind in the UK to have a simultaneous Heating and Chilling system. • A 4-5 year payback on the 20 year scheme

“Calibrate exceeded expectations by having our Heatpump Grain Dryer installed in 9½ weeks ready for the 2018 Harvest. I would happily recommend them for a customised solution.” Ian Douglas West Ancroft Farm Berwick-upon-Tweed

• At least 50% oil reduction, with no burners required for Oilseed Rape drying • 45-50°c at 400% heating efficiency • 1°c at 325% Chilling efficiency • Total energy efficiency of 725% The Highland Show A bespoke Control System remotely manages this system enabling The Douglas’s to have a ‘hands off’ approach as well as enabling real time tariff generation and power consumption readings.

Blinkbonny Kwik Mix

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job.

We also install farm security cameras, farm alarms and cameras for lambing.

We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

BENEFITS

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT

Preservation - Can be used to treat dry or moist grain (14-22% moisture). Protein - Ammonia is a source of nitrogen and therefore potential protein which rumen microbes synthesise into microbial protein. Typically increases the crude protein of grain by 3-4.5% thus reducing requirement for bought-in feeds. pH - Produces grain with pH 8.5-9.5 which helps to buffer rumen pH and improves feed intake whilst avoiding digestive disfunction.

Norvite has a team of nutritionists and feed advisers to provide a full support package including feed analysis, rationing formulation and feed advice. ALpHA is available in 25kg bags. For convenience on farm treatment packs are available as follows: ALpHA 25 (375kg Urea + 125kg ALpHA) to treat 25 tonnes of grain ALpHA 50 (750kg Urea + 250kg ALpHA) to treat 50 tonnes of grain.

PRACTICAL SOLUTION Can be used to preserve a range of grains (barley, maize, oats and wheat). Applicable for natural grain at harvest (moist) for dried grain throughout the year (with the addition of water to activate urease enzyme). ALpHA grain can be fed safely to all stages of cattle. Dairy Cattle (lactating): up to 8kg/head/day Dairy Cattle (youngstock): up to 4kg/head/day

Beef Cattle (finishing): ad lib Beef Cattle (growing): up to 4kg/head/day

Ensure mineral supplements account for Non-Protein Nitrogen (NPN) and that the diet is adequately balanced with sulphur.

Talking........Organic

September 10th 2019

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. The new hens are in at our first site. We cannot believe we are now on our fourth flock (third in houses 1 - 4). They have settled in well, a couple of days where they spook a little bit, but they are settling into the routine, as are we. We have had our first few eggs, so not long now until peak production at both sites. Garden House hens (houses 5 - 8) are doing very well - 96% on average, which is fantastic, but they are making us work hard for the eggs. They tend to lay at all times of the day which makes picking up eggs a never-ending task. The new hens are weighed weekly to check growth rates, daylight length will be increased over the next few weeks and the pop holes will open shortly. We have built more shelters to go onto the ranges in the hope of encouraging the hens to range better. We have planted over 4,000 trees and shrubs on the ranges, however some of them are still very small so offer little protection and shelter at the moment. Lambs have been spaned and split into their groups; short, medium and long term keep using the Racewell. They are now being rotationally grazed on the silage fogs (red and white clover). The Bulls are off. I am hoping for a better scan than last year where the bulls underperformed due to the extreme heat. I will, as usual have all the fingers crossed on scanning day for a good result. The wholecrop silage has been cut and pitted, only one month later than planned due to the seven inches of rain that fell in August. The under-sown multi species ley has suffered particularly where it went flat. Hopefully it will recover. I attended a Premium Cattle Health Scheme meeting in Edinburgh last week which included an interesting walk round the Moredum Institute and their fantastic facilities and equipment enabling analysis of bloods, SAME DAY DELIVERY tissue, faeces etc. SRUC has most definitely the ‘Premium’ cattle health scheme in my eyes and the place to go for accredited stock. We have started converting the old granary into a holiday cottage. Covering the Scottish Borders & North Northumberland We have had planning permission for a little while now and knew the builders were coming, but we’re finding ourselves making decisions on a daily basis, rather than having everything mapped out in advance - winging it! This conversion means we lose a couple of stables for our equine business letting so we are converting an area in our underutilized sheep shed into stabling. We are also busy at home putting up a replacement hay shed. The original building was a timber and tin pole barn, and with a number of the poles rotting through, it was becoming a hazard and an eyesore.

Unlocking the value of your tenanted farm In recent years there has been an increase in deals where landlords have bought out their tenants, or tenants have acquired the farm they tenanted. The registered pre-emptive right to buy now avoids a farm being sold from underneath a tenant. It has also become less politically acceptable in Scotland to be a large landowner. Views differ south of the Border. Purchasing your farm is a goal many tenants aspire to. Often a landlord chooses to dispose of their interest where the return from tenanted farms versus the return from capital invested elsewhere is greater. The terms that can be negotiated depend upon a number of factors including: • Type and terms of tenancy • Post lease agreement • Level of tenant’s improvements • Capital expenditure required • Age of tenant, and whether successors exist Discount on vacant possession (VP) can be considerable. It would be common to buy at 50-60% of VP value. With the VP value of farms being £1m+ the discount ‘unlocked’ can amount to hundreds of thousands of pounds. Retiring. Historically tenants ‘gave up’ their tenancy at retirement and simply received ‘way-go’ for improvements, UMV’s or bound sheep stock value. Today, tenants are more aware of the value of their tenancy and as agents, we regularly negotiate retirement packages, unlocking ‘value’ from the farm. As a valuation exercise the considerations can be similar to the list above, but approaching it from the other end of the deal. The Tenant Farming Commissioner has now produced a guidance note on this subject. Assignation for value. Talk of being able to sell a tenancy was strengthened by introducing it in the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016. The delay to the introduction of the legislation was caused by the requirement for the acquirer of the tenancy to be a ‘new entrant’ or ‘progressing farmer’. Whilst it has not come into force yet, deals are being done ahead of the legislation, and this is helping guide the packages that can be negotiated at retirement. If you are planning to unlock the value in your tenanted farm, these tips may help: • Prepare a list of improvements • Engage an agent early on to help guide you through the process • Understand your own financial parameters, whether buying or selling • Take a reasonable stance – extreme positions are harder to bridge • Deals are best achieved when there is a willingness on both sides Author: Martin Hall MD. Talking........from Lincolnshire

September 8th 2019

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. This year harvest really was a mix of the good, the bad and the ugly. The wheat yields were above average and of good quality, and would have yielded approx. 500kg/ha more if it wasn’t for the horrific winds we had at the beginning of harvest. It was soul destroying lying in bed listening to the wind howling knowing that the wheat was being knocked out. Interestingly it was the Sundance affected more than the Siskin, which has a habit of shedding in a normal year. The spring oats yielded well and again would have done a lot more if it was not for the storm damage. The bushel weights are all over 50 which is encouraging, although they are not worth anything it might be an experiment worth another years trial. They all went flat but combined very easily. Siskin Wheat The largest disaster was the spring beans. I consciously drilled them late to aid blackgrass control, but unwittingly then planted them in the dry at the beginning of a prolonged dry spell. Then we had extreme temperatures in the middle of July which brought an abrupt end to flowering. I also think the fact I roll the spring cropping land in the autumn to encourage blackgrass does not help as it leaves the land a little tight in the spring; so I might leave some un-rolled this year to see what happens. Despite the fabricators of the cultivator modifications missing continual deadlines, we finally got there. I am really pleased with the result, and the job it does. There will be a few modifications in the winter to try and produce a more level finish, but other than that it has been a success. Given the poor nature of our osr yields I decided that the land in question needed subsoiling, despite being direct drilled for 5 seasons. There was no compaction evident when I was digging holes but the land seemed “tight”. Well goodness me. After a few runs in the first field I was back at the yard gathering as much scrap as I could feasibly tie onto the front of the tractor. Next I found a John Deere artic for sale down near Stamford (you have plenty of time for google in 900m long fields at 22% wheel slip) which was reasonably priced. Quite frankly who would be daft enough to want an artic! The new shallow cultivator at work Fortunately after a couple of fields of unmitigated misery, and Shell’s global monthly allocation of red diesel, I moved into an even heavier field which went surprisingly better. The only difference between these fields in terms of history is the heaviest was re-drained 5 years ago and the others haven’t been. Perhaps money on pipe and stone would be more prudent than a bigger tractor... Whilst on that topic I am currently having 110 acres drained at the moment. More on that next month… 38

On Our Farm

September 10th 2019 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 6000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant & partidge poults are raised. We finally finished harvest last Thursday and got the remainder of the straw baled on Sunday. It has been a very frustrating stop start campaign and we did not have a day of combining which was not interrupted by rain. However I know we have got off lightly compared to many others who are still battling the elements trying to get their last few fields cut. I recorded over 140mm in August with most of it coming in the first couple of weeks. I have never seen the river so high at that time of year, it was very close to bursting its banks in places. Thankfully everything has dried up however, the damaged caused to soil structure by combining water logged fields is already starting to rear its ugly head with combine wheelings showing up behind the plough. Full river in August! Despite all the crops looking fantastic throughout the growing season some of them have flattered to deceive. Oilseed rape was very pleasing, yielding 4.88t/ha. Interestingly the ploughed field averaged 5.5t/ha and the min till field yielded only 4.3t/ha. Despite getting off to a flying start in the autumn the min till field was hit hard by pigeons which seems to have resulted in more winter stem weevil damage. I have established rape once again using both methods and it will be interesting to see if the results are the same. I was happy with how the winter oats performed in my rookie year, 8.2t/ha. I estimate we lost 15-20% of the yield in one field which went so flat in the early August storms that we just could not combine Flat Oats some patches. Certainly a good lesson learnt, there is nothing more disheartening than a flat crop. Unfortunately our weighbridge broke halfway through harvest so I can only estimate the Wheat and Spring Barley yields. I think Wheat will have done just over 10.5t/ha which is disappointing. It looked fantastic all year but a combination of lack of sunshine at grain fill, sprouting and bad shedding pre harvest has resulted We will provide the complete Ploughing mucked rape stubbles in lower than expected yields. Spring service for all your steel framed Barley has once again performed well and with low nitrogens building requirements should produce a healthy gross margin. • Straw Sheds • Stable Blocks The wet start to August was not only a headache for the arable • Riding Arenas • Muck Middens enterprise but also the game farm. All deliveries were put on hold • Grain Stores • Silage pits • Stock Buildings • Building Works and the field quickly turned into a mud bath. Thanks to the incredible • Planning Applications hard work of John, Lee and the team all the pheasants and partridges • Building Warrants were delivered safe and well. The rearing field is almost completely cleared and packed away for the winter before any autumn storms Call now for a arrive which caused serious damage last year. free and competitive Next week we plan to house cattle in off the grass. I don’t think I quote have ever seen them looking so good. It will be interesting to weigh Amble Industrial Estate, Amble, Northumberland, NE65 OPE them and see how they have performed. I hope that everyone manages to finish harvest soon and that the Tel: (01665) 710746 autumn drilling campaign goes well. sales@northernstructures.co.uk www.northernstructures.co.uk

Talking.........from the boundary

September 10th 2019

I believe there are far greater threats to our economic fortunes than whether we are in, out, closely allied or whatever other structure politicians can dream up of our relationship with Europe. According to Wikipedia there have been five agricultural revolutions over time. The first was around 10,000 years BC when man moved from hunter gatherer to grower. The next known as the Arab Agricultural Revolution (700 to 1200 AD) was the development of new crops (primarily cereals) and advanced techniques. Then came the British Agricultural Revolution (17th19th Century) with major advances such as crop rotation, field enclosures, and artificial fertilisers. One of the most significant developments Guy Lee was in transport. High wagon transportation costs made it uneconomical to ship commodities very far outside the market radius by road, generally limiting shipment to less than 20 or 30 miles to market or to a navigable waterway. Water transport was, and in some cases still is, much more efficient than land transport. In the early 19th century it cost as much to transport a ton of freight 32 miles by wagon over an unimproved road as it did to ship it 3000 miles across the Atlantic. A horse could pull at most one ton of freight on a Macadam road but a single horse could pull a barge weighing over 30 tons. Between 1873 and 1879 British agriculture suffered from wet summers that damaged grain crops. Cattle farmers were hit by foot-and-mouth disease, and sheep farmers by sheep liver rot. The poor harvests, however, masked a greater threat to British agriculture: growing imports of foodstuffs from abroad. The development of the steam ship and of extensive railway networks in Britain and in the United States allowed U.S. farmers with much larger and more productive farms to export hard grain to Britain at a price that undercut the British farmers. At the same time, large amounts of cheap corned beef started to arrive from Argentina, and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the development of refrigerator ships in about 1880 opened the British market to cheap meat and wool from Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. The Long Depression was a worldwide economic recession that began in 1873 and ended around 1896. It hit the agricultural sector hard and was the most severe in Europe and the United States, which had been experiencing strong economic growth fuelled by the Second Industrial Revolution in the decade following the American Civil War. By 1900 half the meat eaten in Britain came from abroad and tropical fruits such as bananas were also being imported on the new refrigerator ships. In the first half of the 20th century Europe was plagued by wars and growing food from our own resources became a national priority. The Third Agricultural Revolution, known as the Green Revolution, took place during the 1950’s and 60’s with major advances in crop breeding resulting in much higher yields. This period has been credited with saving over a billion people from starvation. I think we are now at the beginning of the next Agricultural Revolution with the development of substitute food products. There is a massive change in eating habits primarily led by headlines that are randomly selected by the media and fed to metropolitan consumers without any explanation of the wider impact of the effect on food security and the rural environment. The growth in plant based alternatives to animal proteins is staggering. The technology is impressive and the investment supporting the R & D of these start up companies runs into billions. $100m and over 4 years was spent finding the perfect plant amongst the Where will eggs come from in the future? Hens or mung beans? 390,000 species there on the planet to make a product that has all the culinary properties of an egg. The plant being used is the Mung Bean which are primarily farmed in Tanzania and Inner Mongolia. Hardly a similar climate to Northern Europe. The appetite for plant alternatives to animal products appears insatiable, between cultured meat grown from animal cells in a lab and plants, alternative meat sales are booming. The greatest threat from these developments is the conversion of forage, primarily grass, into meat and milk. If demand shifts from animal products to plant based substitutes what alternatives uses are there for the land? Forestry is the obvious answer but returns from wood take a considerable amount of time and is a major disrupter to the rural economy. Matt Ridley wrote an excellent article recently on the myths surrounding meat production. The quotes below are from his piece: “Eating carrots instead of steak means you effectively cut your emissions by about two per cent” says the environmental economist Bjorn Lomborg. “As a vegetarian for ethical reasons, I will be the first to say that there are many good reasons to eat less meat. Sadly, making a huge difference to the climate isn’t one of them.” Last November the former head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, mused: “How about restaurants in 10-15 years start treating carnivores the same way that smokers are treated? If they want to eat meat, they can do it outside the restaurant.” The climate is just the latest feeble excuse for the nannies who love to lecture us about our diet. In an all-too-familiar progression, what starts out as a suggestion then becomes ostracism and ends in state coercion. All based on a false premise. But much of the plant material we grow on arable land cannot be eaten by human beings - straw, for example. Plus cows, pigs and chickens turn the indigestible stuff into manure without which soil conservation would be harder and organic farming all but impossible. Prof Imke de Boer of Wageningen University argues that the most carbon-efficient agriculture must include some animals. Also, much of this planet cannot be used for growing crops, but can produce fodder for sheep, cattle, goats, camels and chickens. The hills of Scotland, Wales and the Lake District, for example, are not suitable for wheat, nor is much of the Middle East and Central Asia. Without these animals, we would not only ruin many farming communities, but have to plough and plant a lot more land elsewhere to grow the protein and fats that we otherwise get from animals - and that would mean destroying more forests and wetlands, because unlike sheep and cows, those crops need well-watered, fertile soil. Bad idea! It is very difficult for humans to thrive on a purely plant-based diet. Unless they are affluent and have access to balanced nutrition, vegan children become deficient in iron and vitamin A, stunted in growth and delayed in brain development. A study in rural Kenya found that eating eggs made children grow five per cent faster. This is why globally, as living standards rise, meat and dairy consumption is increasing twice as ENGINEERING fast as population. Throughout the developing MOBILE SERVICES world, when people get access to dairy products and meat, their stature and IQ tend to shoot up. Denying this opportunity to the many people -‐    Fabrication   MOBILE ENGINEERING SERVICES   who are vegetarians through poverty rather than choice would be grotesque. As Wendy is still out of commission, she has donated her space to Ian this month. It doesn’t matter how much we do to address our effects on the environment we’re still the despised pest. The message is clear that the NZ government has every intention of making us the scapegoat. From what Minister Parker and his colleagues are saying we are their prime target in their quest to save the world. They have lots of proposals. Under the banner of climate change the government is intent on introducing a tax on nitrogen fertiliser as well as a tax on our livestock emissions. This is justified by the government repeating the lie that we are responsible for 48% of NZ’s emissions. This is simply not true because that calculation doesn’t take into account the carbon dioxide our pastures and crops take out of the atmosphere in the first place. The equation is simple, every kg of dry matter that we grow in plant material takes roughly a kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. Most of this carbon is exported from our farms as food, fibre and leather where it has been deemed unacceptable to tax people for eating and wearing it. Instead our government is proposing to tax us the producers of this food. No other country is even considering this simply because what is proposed in NZ has nothing to do with stopping climate change. They are proposing changes to the National Policy Statement for Freshwater (NPSFW) which they have signalled will require rural catchments to comply to higher water quality standards in our rivers and lakes; by which they mean less nitrates. In doing so they are likely to have to introduce an exceptions regime to the NPSFW. It means all NZers have to accept that they are part of the problem and that they cannot just blame farmers. The so called “bottom lines” or minimum standards for our water-bodies were set at a level that are achievable in most cases for all water-bodies that are polluting below these standards. The NPSFW requires our regional councils to plan to bring all those polluted water-bodies up to that standard, urban and rural. The new proposals will likely allow exemptions for urban authorities otherwise the cost to our cities will make the government very unpopular. Unfortunately these new proposals set minimum quality parameters for nitrates at levels that are in many cases those of pristine alpine streams. If left unchanged they will shut down pastoral farming in the South Island and require it all to be planted in forestry. Only those farms that are on heavy soils will be allowed to remain. In an unprecedented show of hostility toward farmers the ministers of agriculture and environment said This is one of the supposedly they were coming after farmers. highly polluted rivers that Encouraging this “hate a farmer” mania may appeal to their supporters because it lets them off the hook, desperately needs saving. Running gin clear and clean but it does nothing to help the environment. full of fish and even the odd If these proposals are not enough to scare away farmers, the government is also proposing to slow down seal! traffic in rural areas. They have excluded us from the targeted use of GM technology to enable the development of potential solutions and pulled any assistance for infrastructure projects such as water storage to help cope with population growth and giving the country some resilience to climate change. They are subsidising overseas investors to buy our farms for forestry conversion, but stopped overseas investment in farms, and have even proposed a tax on my farm truck to subsidise townies to buy electric cars. All this comes when we farmers are already struggling to pay for riparian fencing and planting, effluent systems upgrades, Buyer of Steel and Non Ferrous Metals Farm Environmental plans, consent, auditing and compliance, COLLECTION SERVICE AVAILABLE nutrient allocation and bio-security levies... We as farmers want to play our part in saving the planet but Competitive Prices Paid central and regional governments have to target the actual BEST PRICES IN THE BORDERS problem. A sceptical, broken, bitter and sullen farmer is not going to be a cooperative participant in saving the planet. NEIL SUMPTON 01388 601231 / 07790 046476

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. 7:15AM, Monday 09/09/19, harvest is unfortunately NOT finished! Last night saw us get the wheat tidied up before the latest band of rain arrived, leaving ONLY 50ha of flat oats. With the sunny weather we had over the weekend it was a toss-up between cutting standing but sprouted wheat at 40ha a day against flat oats at probably half that or less! The wheat actually turned out a decent crop, averaging 8.3t/ha over 250ha, with even 2nd wheat on light land doing ok. There has been sprouting evident in most samples and bushel weights have taken a hit. Samples tested Cutting wheat so far have been from 68 to 73kg/hl but I’m not confident about the last cut crops, which haven’t been dried and sampled yet. The actual cause of this is most likely to be the sprouting but the lack of sunshine during grain fill probably meant we were starting from a low base anyway. The grain rye has done very well again at an average of 10t/ha over 111ha. It seemed to be a very consistent crop regardless of soil types and the final field could well have broken the 11t/ha mark but lodged badly during the heavy rain 2 weeks ago. We managed to salvage most of the flat stuff but attempting to get every last grain scraped off the ground resulted in a Sprouted wheat huge mass of damp straw bunging up the combine so I decided discretion was called for and we got the best stuff cut. So apart from being a very broken harvest it’s not been too bad for results so far, I’ll let you know what happens with the flat oats when/if we get them cut. There has been better news for straw volumes this year with wheat averaging just about 7.5 hesstons/ha and rye at 15, this is a big boost to the carrot crop and will mean that we do not have to buy as much in this season. We did however encounter a few problems with the baler, first a feed auger broke which resulted in a big bill for parts and labour, then a bearing collapsed in the main gearbox which I’m sure will be expensive as it’s a massive Oops bit of engineering. Luckily someone local had a baler for hire so we used that for a few days to keep on top of the baling. I’m sure that some of the neighbours think I’m a bit mad baling everything behind the combine (and who am I to disabuse them of that notion) but sometimes with straw it’s either bale it damp now or bale it damp in 3 weeks. Admittedly as its for carrots there is not the same requirement for quality but it still has to spread ok. Finally we have started harvesting the Maris Peer set skin salad crop. Quality looks ok but yields aren’t as good as last year, as soon as the current rain band moves on we will get back to that. These will be followed by the remainder of the salad crops and then the Maris Piper. The last of the Piper is due to be desiccated as soon as it dries up again, this means that we should be finished potato harvest by the middle of October. Well that’s the Oh dear theory anyway! 50

Basically we have no government and that is spilling over to allow other laws to be introduced through www.jthorburn.co.uk mple welding to detailed fabrication projects, the back door which are much more detrimental than Brexit. Government needs to go back quite a bit further than

cient and effective manner. the twocost wars to get back to the true fundamentals of life and it won’t take long to read it and the true law hasn’t

and never will change on them and that of course is the TEN COMMANDMENTS. So in a society where there are so many so called “grey areas” I reckon there is nothing grey about “though shalt not kill” whenever it comes to any debate about abortion. The theory of “when the children go back to school it will dry up” isn’t quite working as harvest is being delayed yet again with quite a bit of straw lying and some spring barley still to cut. To get the lying spring barley off the ground we made the wise decision to return to crimping. This is ideally done at 30+% but I found that to be sore on the combine in years past so we went with 26% and added water at the crimping stage. It seems to have consolidated well and I will always remain nervous of the outcome as under cover you never know what goes on! In the meantime I will remain thankful as it one less thing to think about. Although the cows are mainly getting young leafy grass it is remaining difficult to maintain yield with being so many days calved. Rough windy nights are also sore on them, but while grazing can continue it is still the cheapest way to produce milk in a market which is under pressure, which makes the contract milk price look increasingly attractive. On the other hand beef price is in freefall and even with grass fed beef it is going to be no use especially for those who buy in. Realistically if they give less for the weanling then the cow owner can’t manage, so the finished price is still the main issue regardless of efficiency. I have a feeling it is one of those times where farmers will be taken to breaking point before given a little lifeline. Suckler heifers have been sold up to date leaving room on land for last years calves which are increasingly looking better after being wormed. I’ll go for now and do something useful while Westminster continue to roar at each other like a batch of hungry calves!
