IT’S NOT OVERCOMPLICATED

JUST BETTER 0% FINANCE PACKAGES AVAILABLE*

Alnwick Properties Attention all landlords and estate managers in England From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Government’s minimum energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. Scotland is still looking at this matter. If domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F, G, H or worse then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to it’s poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete draft EPC reports for your properties now so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for England and the Scottish Borders.

A Heatpump system manages a revolutionary Grain Drying process. The heatpump is located in a customised plant room that is manufactured in our workshop and delivered to site ready to use. A bespoke controller can operate the grain dryer via a cloud based system enabling Calibrate to monitor all aspects of the process and tariff generation meters online.

This Heatpump can heat more than one application at a time, for example:

Grain Dryer

Farm House

Cottage

A revolutionary, patent pending Grain Drying system will save Hulam Farm £36,000* per year. “I have dealt with Calibrate for a number of years now and this is the second big project I have undertaken; paybacks from the initial project have been 4 years rather than the forecasted 6.5 years. I like these guys, they are very clever, get the job done – could highly recommend them for large scale projects.” Michael Allan Hulam Farm

The Heatpump Grain Drying solution is very flexible, it can be bolted on to an existing Grain Dryer or can be purchased as a complete solution and it uses a ‘cool only’ function at the end of the cycle to ensure the grain is at any temperature you require prior to storage.

This system is OFGEM approved at the highest possible tariff of

GRANNY, I’LL MISS YOU Wendy writes

It was August 16th, the weather was settled, the ground dry and I had the feeling this was not going to be my ideal harvest when out of the blue (blue, Conservative get it?) he receives a call from a Mr Robert Lamont who starts enquiring about my health and the cost of my services. It turns out that Alan had the unfortunate experience of his combine sliding into a wet hole on a farm near Ayton. Robert asked me not to mention the fact that his other son is our local MP, to which I replied that discretion is my second name. You can trust me to keep a secret. He said we could not come until the 17th, which Robert said was fine. So off we set, through Duns, past Manderston, onto Chirnside where we turned left towards Ayton. With that splendid castle in full view we went left up a hill into the field and there was a sight that would set even the most seasoned recovery vehicle’s heart pounding. A John Deere well stuck, at a considerable angle, needing all my guile and skill to pull her out of the bog and onto terra firma. The only way out was by attaching the cable to the back axle, first we tried with some straps he had but they broke at the critical moment so it had to be my necklace. The chain was removed from my bumper wrapped round the pulling point and with a very gentle amount of pressure the Jolly Green Giant emerged from its sodden pit onto dry ground. The driver was so excited he lost his mobile phone in the process. I have to say that Robert did not show quite the same emotions he had displayed when John was elected to Westminster, none the less I think he was relieved to see there was no damage. I had a feeling this was not my first experience with this machine. How right I was as I had the pleasure of recovering it when its previous owners a certain Messrs Thomson of Caverton Mill parked it in a similar situation! From Ayton I went to Duns where I spent ten very comfortable nights in the care of Mr Neil Redpath who has been appointed my new provider of footwear. His team removed all my wheels (not without some difficulty) fitted new tyres all round, which more than once leaked air and they had to go through the process of splitting the rims again to get the tube to fit. I am now more comfortable on my feet than I have been for a long time, I am also legal, safe and with much better grip. 10FT & 20FT AVAILABLE FOR The very sad news that ‘Granny’ (his mother) has died really shocked me. We had a mutual admiration for each other. She was so supportive of all my activities, always asking after me. She often reprimanded her son for not looking after me as she had cared for him. My articles were always passed round her large circle of friends. I will really miss her as we had so much in common. We would spend hours talking of our various ailments and the curse of old age. I plan to be at her funeral at Holy Trinity, Melrose on September 15th, and neither he nor From £650.00 + VAT she is going to stop me.

Talking......... Organic

September 5th 2017

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. We have completed the wholecrop barley / vetch under sown with red clover / high Sugar Grasses. I think we now have a good balance between seeds in the mixture of quantity and variety to allow the new ley to flourish. It has yielded about 10t fresh weight per acre. The aftermaths will now be used to finish lambs on. All the lambs were spaned last month and we have had our first lambs away. Lambs still at home are being regularly tested for worms via faecal egg counts. Replacement tups, both meat and maternal are being purchased. The vast majority of straw has now been led in to use for winter bedding for the cattle. This will become invaluable farmyard manure to fertilise next year’s crops. Thoughts are now being put towards a new indoor muck store to store the farmyard manure and the hen manure to maximise use of those nutrients to the fields when applied. This will also insure against any leaching / losses which could lead to soil / water pollution when stored outside. The big question is how big do we make it? Whatever size we build it will always be one bay too small! The bulls came off the cows after 49 days and off the heifers after 42 days. We now look forward to scanning them to see how they did. The hens are looking good. We had a blip over the summer where the birds went off their feed, lost some body weight and subsequently egg numbers dropped. We blood tested to check that there wasn’t anything wrong health wise, and also checked muck samples for other known possible problems. We have got to the bottom of the problem and have managed to rectify it, bird weight is back up to where it should be and the egg size is now spot on, however we did miss the peak of lay at this time. It has shown us how sensitive the hens are to any changes and the impact of those changes. We are also very sensitive to our birds welfare. As our birds are fully beaked we are conscious that we don’t want to put any extra stress on the birds which could lead them to become aggressive to one another and start feather pecking, which is a problem we don’t want. We have added a motor to the side air inlets in the building which is linked to the temperature sensors in the building, allowing the air inlets to automatically open and close according to the temperature of the day. Previously we were adjusting these manually, which tended to be rather reactive. This has definitely improved the environment in the building and kept the temperature more level, Buyer of Steel and Non Ferrous Metals even on the warmer days. COLLECTION SERVICE AVAILABLE We are putting solar panels onto the roof of the layers building Competitive Prices Paid this month. Between them and the wind turbine we will produce BEST PRICES IN THE BORDERS enough of our own electricity to power the building with some left over to export.

Talking......... From the South

September 4th 2017

Hugo Lee is farm manager at Whitsbury Farm and Stud near Fordingbridge in Hampshire. The soils are predominantly chalk downland with some clay cap. Cropping covers 1500 acres and includes wheat, barley, oilseed rape, peas and poppies. 60 cattle are finished annually and 250 ewe lambs are sold every September. The farm is also home to the famous Whitsbury Manor Stud and Whitsbury racing stables. We finally finished harvest on 28th of August in glorious sunshine and although yields have been ok the quality has been hit by the wet weather. After an exciting world athletic championships in London culminating in a fantastic gold for the men’s 4x100m relay team I would like to award medals to the following: A gold medal goes to Siskin winter wheat which yielded a very encouraging 10.8t/ha. Unfortunately, unlike my cousin, Will Howe, we did not manage to cut the Siskin before it had started shelling out and the fields looked like they had been undersown as there was so much shelled wheat re growing. It is hard to estimate how much grain was lost but I would be confident that we would have yielded over 11t/ha if we could have been able to cut it earlier. Gold also goes to my fantastic harvest crew of Bob, Will and Rob who worked tirelessly throughout a very Harvest finally finished and sun shining at last! testing season. It was a snatch and grab harvest usually starting at 4pm and finishing at 12pm before the rain came again the following day and everyone had to be very patient waiting for the weather window. Silver medals go to Crusoe winter wheat which yielded a pleasing 10.4t/ha but unfortunately due to the rain it did not make milling spec. Silver is also awarded to oilseed rape which yielded 4.14t/ha and all came in dry. The bronze medal is awarded to the scorpion yellow linseed which despite a very, very dry spring yielded 2.25t/ha and once again was a dream to combine. We cut over 130 acres in a day and a half without needing to dry any of it. There have been some poor performances and lottery funding has been withdrawn from the following: Planet spring barley yielded a disappointing 7.3t/ha and it is borderline malting quality. The peas were a disaster yielding 3t/ha and were a nightmare to combine. All the rain had knocked them flat to the floor. Luckily we only had 30ha of peas which I had not planned to grow but was forced into by the sudden demise of UK poppy growing. Since finishing harvest we have drilled over 120ha of rape which has all been rolled, sprayed and slug pelleted. I just hope that it can get off to a good start and not suffer from the high numbers of flea beetle which are decimating any early drilled crops in the area. Finally, on a sad a note my Grandmother Ann Lee passed away today and she will be hugely missed by everyone in our family. Without my grandparents we wouldn’t even be farming at Sandystones and for that I will be eternally grateful. Going to see Granny and talking to her on the telephone was such a joy as she was always interested in what was happening at Whitsbury and she loved reading all about it in Agrimart. She was so supportive and really excited that I was going to come home and farm at Sandystones so there will be a large void for us when we eventually move back in December. 26

Talking......... Livestock

September 4th 2017

Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock.   As I looked back at last month’s article, I am alarmed to notice that the calves that were housed then because of rain are still indoors as are the dry cows at the moment. Surely the   give this stock the freedom they deserve. Having weather will improve soon to be able to said that, the dry cows are receiving very mature silage which is probably ticking most of the boxes for the dry cow diet for the first 3 weeks after drying off.   A couple of cows that were running milk out were put out to stubble ground to decrease the chance of infection or cross infection and being away from the   udders have now dried up quite nicely. parlour probably helped reduce milk let down and the The heavy bullocks were even being let into the yard for buffer feeding but, now that grass volumes have increased over a bigger area of ground they have been batched according to weight,   with the heaviest bullocks receiving meal and the youngest group have went to lush pasture (as pictured). There have only been two, three day windows within   the month to get caught up with saving silage or crop. This doesn’t seem much and it wasn’t, but it was enough to ensile late second cut with no seapage or ground damage and get the winter oats and wheat cut. Initially I was worried about the crop but as it wasn’t  burnt off - it was fine and it had remained standing. The ground conditions were borderline but I hope that any damage will plough out of it. Northern Ireland would be noted for being over mechanized, which at times may seem true but this year every size of machine has   been used in these busy times with barely enough people to operate them. My theory is that any loss of farm produce is expensive and having machinery or a reliable contractor to minimize losses is essential. In farming the most asked questions are “how many cows do you milk?”, “how many ewes do you have?”, “how many acres of crop do you have?” or “what size is your tractor?” and if the answer is below an interesting level there can be a confused look returned HARVEST HELP as if you are only a footer. However, in the meanwhile important New Holland TX66, 20ft header, questions are missed eg: How self sufficient are you, thus combine & driver for hire reducing costs? or even more importantly, What is your bottom 4x4 round baling line of profit? and Are you progressing as a business and adding value to your produce before expansion? Now ah! Those are real Central Borders • Tel David Fleming: questions as those are questions that a good bank manager asks! 07967 683 991 • 01896 822 707 34

Cloud Accounting As the technology around us progresses at such a dramatic rate it can be quite a daunting task to try and keep up. Cloud Accounting is a relatively new term to the Accounting industry and for some it instils a sense of fear, yet for a long time many of us will already have been using Cloud based products without even realising it. Take Internet Banking, for example. When you access this information you are using ‘the Cloud’. The Cloud is quite simply an information platform which allows you access from any device, at any time, using the internet. So when you use Cloud Accounting software it means the key people in your organisation, and even your Accountant, can have Real Time Information available to hand at a touch of a button, quite often with significant time and cost savings. With the upcoming requirements from H.M. Revenue & Customs for businesses to submit returns, not only on a more regular basis but also electronically, now would be the perfect time to review your needs. If you would like J H Greenwood & Company to assess your current accounting processes and software, if applicable, please phone or email us at the details below and we would be more than happy to review your requirements and make sure you are on the right technology track. On Our Farm My mother died suddenly on Monday at the age of 88. Her health had been declining for sometime and although her death came as a shock it was a release from a slow descent into reduced mobility and reliance on care. As I am sure happens to everyone who has experienced bereavement of a close relative it does naturally lead to a period of reflection when most waking moments are spent remembering events. Without my mother’s lack of selfishness and support for the path my life was taking we would not be in the very fortunate position of owning a farm that has given us a good living, a great place to bring up a family and the satisfaction of pursuing the career I had set my heart on. It all started in 1952 when my parents bought a pair of cottages without electricity up a narrow lane in rural Hampshire. With the cottages came 8 acres and it was on this tiny patch of ground that my yearn for agriculture developed. My father worked in the insurance industry in the City of London, he commuted by train daily wearing a starched collar, pin stripe suit, and bowler hat. In those days he had to go to work on Saturday mornings. Although neither of my parents were bought up in a rural environment or had any connection with farming, it was not long before he had a tractor (with spade lug wheels), a Guernsey cow which he milked before driving to the station, pigs and a field of grain. He soon built a hen house for 600 battery hens, my mother had the job of collecting eggs, making butter as well as bringing up three children. We always reared 100 turkeys for Christmas which involved the whole family getting these birds oven ready and delivered to customers. On the machinery front, the tractor was replaced with a wheeled TE20, and then by a Fordson Major. We had a 3 furrow reversible plough, a grain drill and even a Massey Harris combine with a 6’ cut and the grain going into sacks. My father tested my mother’s patience to the limit when the combine would be repaired on the kitchen table and the hen equipment was washed in the house often with him wearing his city suit. I loved the life and never had the experience of working on ‘proper farms’. In 1976 my parents sold Elm Tree Farm. Over the 25 years they lived there the house had been built onto at least three times. They then bought a very pretty manor house this time with 13 acres four miles away. I am not sure why, as we three children had fled

September 6th 2017 the nest, but it was a very happy home with lots of parties and fun. When my father retired in 1989 they put the house on the market and were looking at farms for us. In 1990 whilst staying with my sister near St Boswells we came to view Sandystones. We put an offer in and were lucky enough to secure the farm. My parents then had to find a house for themselves which is when they came across Mainhill an ideal sized house, this time with 6 acres, not very far from either my sister or us. My mother aged 61, gave up all her friends and very active social life to move North purely so we could farm. She never complained, she just got on with life. She quickly made new friends and soon was as busy up here as she had been in Hampshire. My father died just five years after we had moved but she never looked back always enthusiastically supporting her family in every way. She always used to ring me to thank me for her copy of Agrimart. She was a matriarchal figure and we will all miss her smile, love of life and support for everything we did. On the farming front Harvest has been a stop start affair with variable yields and quality, Cassata winter barley was regraded to the high nitrogen bulk due to the dry spring, oilseed rape was combined at 8% and did not need the services of the drying floor (sadly!). Organic winter oats yielded 6.6t/ha to gross £1585/ ha. Wheat has averaged over 10t/ha which is pleasing. With the spring barley still to combine we do not need the aftermath of a hurricane that is about to batter the Caribbean.

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. Talking......... from Lincolnshire

September 4th 2017

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of

manufacture their own range of oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter He also manages Thorpe Farming trailers, built toa contracting a high business standard to beLtd. Harvest is something of an anti-climax these days. You tend to the crops for the previous strong robust. year; spend the winterand preparing machinery (well the day before you want it anyway) for it all to be over in a blink of an eye. The combine has still not clocked up 100 threshing hours and we BALE TRAILERS IN crops, STOCK. have cut 434ha. This is due to some average/poor an oversize combine and a driver with a short attention span (me)! PHONE FOR DETAILS Other than some spring beans which are still a week away, harvest finished 10 days ago. The Spring Barley yields were down all around in our area, but mine were a particular disappointment with a cold dry spring and a horrific net blotch burden (despite spending a king’s ransom on the crop) mainly to blame. Having seen my average spring barley yield drop from 9t/ha in the first 2 years, to 7.5t/ha in the third and down to 5.3t/ha in the fourth, there is a reason why heavy land farmers historically ditched spring crops in favour of winter ones and I am now learning why! I am growing oilseed rape again this year after a break of a few years, partially because spring break crops cannot be relied upon, and it would seem partially because I like a challenge. Having never grown the crop since the neonics were banned, I now fully appreciate what all the fuss has been about. Currently I have the Ewerby big 5 doing their very best to ruin the crop; slugs, snails, flea beetle, pigeons and rabbits and in places I fear they may have already succeeded. Having been tinkering with direct drilling and cover crops for a few years, this year I have resorted to hauling the big drag out of the nettles and turning some fields brown. I have had some great successes direct drilling, but I have had more disappointments/ sleepless nights. I understand the long term thinking and potential benefits behind the cover crops but have found that when they have been properly accounted for they are costing in excess of £100/ha. Me bombing around with a 11m pigtail at £15/ha leaves a bit in the kitty for holidays and fuel for the tractor/combine driver; jaffa cakes.

Talking........New Zealand

September 3rd 2017 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. The good news is that there is some buoyancy in the market for grain, milk and lamb. We need some good news, but we’re still too wet to farm. The ground is sodden and every time we think things are drying a wee bit, we get more rain. It is a little bit depressing. The bad news is that we are running down to a general election and the incumbent government who have rightly prided themselves on sober and sound financial management and leadership for the last 9 years - looks like they are going to lose to a coalition of left wing, anti-business, bitter and twisted unemployables. This coalition is made of 3 main parties. There is the “United Alzheimer party”, led by a very elderly Maori fella who wants to move Auckland 250kms north and believes in conspiracies. He gets his support base from NZers of his own age, who like the Brexiteers believe that the world was better 60 years ago. Then there is the “We Hate Farmers Party”, who claim to be environmentalists but whose political leanings are those of the loony left. They want to tax everything except dope: (water, land, nutrients, tourists, transport, houses;) close down farming and the dairy industry in particular, and legalise drugs and benefit fraud. Their support base comes from those on social welfare who smoke a lot of weed. At the moment these two parties have 20% of the seats in our parliament. The third party is of course Labour. They were out for the count (less than 25% of the vote) but last week changed leaders to a young energetic and charismatic woman from Auckland who has revitalised her party’s election hopes. If one is to believe her promises then she is scary. She has adopted all the anti-business and anti-farming taxes of the lunatic left in a bid to undermine that party’s support base, but the reality is that if she is to govern she will need them on her team. I think the really disappointing part of this whole election campaign is the anti-farming vitriol that has been given free reign. The promise of new taxes that could in accumulation cost our farm in excess of another $100,000/yr is bad enough but to be told the money is to be used to sort out Auckland and Christchurch’s sewerage problems because they are our fault is a little galling! We console ourselves watching Will and the Wee Fella playing rugby. They didn’t lift the Ranfurly Shield, lost to Noth Otago, but did beat Poverty Bay. There is some pride in having 2 boys turn out for their province. The Wee Fella, Will Post match analysis. Blondie, Gorgeous Reinforcements

How to improve yield and quality of Oats? Bioscence Independent trials at loddington over 4 years helped to provide very valuable data, Oats showed an average yield increase of 12%. The Bioscence approach helped increase natural soil biology and improved plant root mass. Every 1cm deeper your roots go, you access 130 tons of soil across 1/ha, therefore improving plant feeding, leading to better yield, milling quality, plant health and stress reduction. We achieved these results and still managed to reduce nitrogen by 10%. On farm trials over many years have also shown yield increases of 10-20%. Consistent improvements in bushel weights were noted, helping to meet market demands and improve yield. Franklin Soil Fertility liquid bio stimulant can easily be applied with other crop treatments, is tank mixable, safe and simple to use.

• Improved root mass • Better plant feeding • Improved biology • 12% increase yield • Improved milling quality • 10% less nitrogen • £57/ha improved margin (based on £112/ton selling price)

Talking......... Arable

September 3rd 2017

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Blink and you’ll miss it! The Scottish summer at least, unfortunately harvest has been a bit more of a drawn out affair. Having given up on winter barley, winter oats and oilseed rape I was hoping that the combinable harvest would be a bit more condensed. We did get started on the 9th of August with triticale but it was to be the 20th before we would finish it, due to both the “broken” weather and some fields not ripening as quickly. It was the same story with the rye, we went from cutting it at a good speed and at 16% moisture to cutting laid crops at 21% 2 weeks later. Luckily however, the wheat has been relatively plain sailing so far with moistures now down to the high teens as opposed to low 20’s that is often the case. Yields of everything have, so far, been very acceptable although falling a bit short Flat wheat of record breaking. Bear in mind that everything is relative though, our record wheat yield is 9.33t/ha over 290ha. I don’t think we will reach that but in that year a lot of the wheat was following vining peas and was on the very best fields on the farm, but it is shaping up to be near that level. Combining will carry on for a while yet though, albeit in a sporadic manner, as the last 40ha of oats were only desiccated yesterday (2/9/17) and then there is another 40ha of late drilled spring barley that might be ready by the end of the month. We have also started to potato harvesting with some Maris Peer in our new refrigerated stores, yields and quality have been ok, however we are stopped from digging anymore as the skins are still to set hopefully we will get going again at the end of this week. The last block of ware has also been desiccated, this means that if everything goes to plan we should be able to roll into the main crop as soon as we finish digging the salad varieties, here’s hoping at least. We haven’t, as yet made a start to drilling any combinable crops, however we have some cover crops drilled (in truth 5ha out of 100) so at least a start has been made to next year’s crop establishment. Elsewhere the carrots and energy beet are bulking well with the moisture levels being kept topped up by the heavy showers we have been having, hopefully a bit of sun and heat through September will give them a bit of a boost, along with everyones spirits. August 2017

Jessica Clark is an Associate Rural Practice Chartered Surveyor for George F White based in their Duns and Alnwick offices. She specialises in subsidy and grant applications, strategic business management, valuation and the sale and purchase of rural property in both England and Scotland. Important changes to 2018 Greening Guidance

At the end of August the Scottish Government published new greening guidance for 2018. There are major changes, some good and some not so good. The changes in Scotland are summarised as follows:Hedges have added as an EFA option. To be eligible the hedge must have a length of at least 20 metres or a length of less than 20 metres where it meets another hedge at each end. Any gap of less than 20 metres is treated as being part of the hedge. The hedge must be on or within five metres of arable land or contiguous to a claimed EFA option in such a way that the longest edge of the hedge is parallel to the field, it must be on your holding, or under your control/responsibility, on a claimed or adjacent to a claimed parcel, that is BPS eligible and claimed on your SAF and it can be any height but must be up to and including three metres wide from the centre of the hedge (hedges wider than three metres from the centre of the hedge are BPS and EFA ineligible). If the hedge is a boundary between two fields half the hedge should be claimed against each field. The inclusion of hedges is certainly a welcome addition to EFA options. Hedges have been an EFA option in England since 2015 and have proved to be popular. Agro-forestry. Land which was arable in 2015, but has now been planted with trees under a Forestry Grant Scheme is eligible to be used as an EFA option. Ban on Plant Protection Products (PPP). There has been an outright ban of the use of PPP on all areas of EFA Nitrogen fixing crops from establishment until after harvest of the nitrogen fixing crop. There has also been a ban on using PPP on EFA fallow land between 15 January and 15 July with the exception of spot herbicide for injurious and invasive weeds. They have also banned the use of PPP on catch crops from the date of harvest of nurse crop to the 31 December, and green cover from establishment of the green cover to the 31 December. Maintenance of drainage of EFA fallow. You are allowed to undertake maintenance of field drains in the period 15 January to 15 March, this is limited to investigation (inspection pits, etc.) and replacement of pipes or tiles where existing ‘bursts’ have been identified. There are also some significant changes in England for 2018 which are as follows:-

Addition of EFA Field Margins. Previously only buffer strips adjacent to water courses were eligible however this option has now been extended to include field margins. We are however waiting for further clarification from DEFRA on this. Extended period for EFA Catch Crops. EFA Catch Crops will have to be established by 20th August 2018 and retained until at least 14th October 2018. Mixtures of EFA Nitrogen-fixing Crops and Other Crops. Mixtures of nitrogen-fixing crops will be permitted as EFA, as well as mixtures of nitrogen-fixing crops grown with ‘other crops’ as long as the nitrogen-fixing crop is ‘predominant’. Ban on Plant Protection Products (PPP). PPPs may not be applied on any areas of fallow, catch/cover crops or nitrogen-fixing crops being used for EFA for BPS 2018. DEFRA is working on more detailed guidance on this ban, but it is unlikely that it will be published until this Autumn. For further information, please contact Jessica Clark on 07912 895919 or jessicaclark@georgefwhite.co.uk
