John & Allan Marshall - East Pitkierie Farm - Anstruther (Fife)

“We had a 40 tonne per hour Perry grain drier installed with handling equipment. We have found the Perry machines have quite low noise levels and we particularly like the Perry PLC control panel. It’s really simple to use and the text message alerts are really helpful. The automatic set up makes getting the drier running at its optimum for our crops really simple, and with the panel incorporating the handling too, the re-routing of the crop is easier than we could have hoped for.”

M J Harrison Supplies Ltd is a family run business established in 1981, that supplies quality precast concrete products to the Agricultural, Construction and Industrial sectors, including Recycling and Biomass. During this time the business has expanded by the company ethos of providing quality, competitively priced products backed by individual customer service and support. The range of products available has increased to meet the customers demand and needs and the availability of bespoke products has also grown. A close working relationship with Moore Concrete has also been an important contributing factor to this growth. The aim of M J Harrison Supplies is to have satisfied customers who come back time after time. Here’s what some of their customers said in a recent independent survey: ‘Service and back-up excellent’, ‘The company does a great job’, ‘Really pleased with the service’, ‘No other similar products at the same quality and value’, ‘Best value for money’, ‘Good family business’, ‘Best quality available’, ‘Quick response to enquiries’. went into the design of this product resulting in a very practical and workable product. Features include two forklift recesses so it is very easily and safely moved or repositioned (a one-man job) as and when required; double load bearing as standard; can safely be loaded on one side with grain, or similarly dense material with nothing on the other and should not move and no need to fix down (up to 3m high). A recent development in their slat range is an independent report compiled by renowned veterinarian consultant Owen Atkinson, which confirmed that cows housed on SurefootTM slats have improved health and welfare in the form of less slips Gang Slats and injuries, better foot health and better oestrus activity. These, in turn can deliver financial benefits to dairy farmers in the order of £60 per cow, per year across a typical herd. The new report specifically confirms that cows housed on SurefootTM slats walk with greater confidence than other walking surfaces including rubber floors, solid concrete floors, rubber-surfaced slats and conventional brush finished slats. This report builds on previous findings, which confirmed that SurefootTM has 50% more grip than conventional concrete slats; has a durable finish and abrasion resistance which is likely to last their lifetime and cows walk more confidently on SurefootTM slats compared with brush finished slats and textured/grooved solid concrete. If you would like to see the above products, please visit M J Harrison Supplies/ Moore Concretes stand at AgriScot (Stand 4 in the Highland Hall) where their sales team will be delighted to meet you and discuss your precast requirements. Blinkbonny Kwik Mix

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

Jessica Clark is an Associate Rural Practice Chartered Surveyor for George F White based in their Duns and Alnwick offices. She specialises in subsidy and grant applications, strategic business management, valuation and the sale and purchase of rural property in both England and Scotland. Farmers are set to receive another increase in their Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payment, due to the exchange rate being for 2017 set at €1 = £0.8947. The 2017 exchange rate sees another increase, for the second year running, of 5%, compared to last year’s exchange rate of €1 = £0.85528. This is the highest the exchange rate has been since 2009 when it was £0.90930. Entitlement values are still to be set; however in England increases in BPS payment should be around £10/ha for Non SDA and SDA claimants and a further £2-3/ha being received for those with Moorland ground. It will be interesting to see how those who opted to receive their BPS payment in Euros will fair, given the strong exchange rate. Unless there is a major political event that causes the pound to weaken even further, there will be those who will be wishing they had opted to receive payment in Sterling, rather than having to watch the markets closely in order not to lose out. Farmers have also been receiving an extra payment from the RPA/SGRPID recently in the form of the Financial Discipline Mechanism (FDM) reimbursement. Similar to last year, these monies originate from deductions taken from the previous year’s payments being refunded back. For those of you in Scotland you should have now received a letter from SGRPID offering you a 2017 National BPS Scheme Loan. This is an ‘opt-in’ scheme therefore by the 20th October you must either return the reply slip to SGRPID or confirm you wish to ‘opt-in’ by email. If you have not yet received an offer letter it is worth speaking to SGRPID to find out why. There may be a reason why or it could have just slipped through the net. Letters have also been sent out saying 2016 LFASS payments should shortly be paid into your bank accounts. Again, if you have not received confirmation of this it is worth chasing up SGRPID. Valuation Notices have started to be sent out regarding business rates on sporting rights. I have seen a handful of notices so far and the rateable values have all been less than £1000. A number of rates of relief are available under the Small Business Bonus Relief depending on the combined rateable value of all properties. If the combined value is up to £15,000, 100% relief is available therefore no rates are payable. However, in order to benefit from the relief you must apply for it, it is not automatic. Details of how to apply will be included with the Valuation Notice. It is also possible to appeal the rateable value within 6 months of the date of the Valuation Notice. For further information, please contact Jessica Clark on 07912 895919 or jessicaclark@georgefwhite.co.uk

A FUNERAL TO REMEMBER Wendy writes

Much against her wishes he took me to Granny’s funeral. He got up early (I was very surprised to see him up and about before 7am) and we had a good run to Melrose. To give him his due he had done his research and found an ideal parking spot for me very near the church and made sure I was wearing my new shoes. He parked up and then got a lift home with Max, one of the sons in law. He crept back into the house and she never even noticed he had been away. I was able to watch everyone arrive, and I lost count of how many times I heard ‘Oh look, there’s Wendy. Granny will be so happy she has come’. The service was obviously a very happy one as My new shoes everyone came out with a smile on their face despite the sad occasion. Soon the hearse was away with Granny to Benrig cemetary and much to my surprise he got in and drove me there in his suit and tie. I had to keep my speed down for fear of arriving before she did, that would have made her laugh. We parked up some fifty yards from the internment and again I could see and hear everything. Since that memorable day I really have been very quiet, one shed at Lochtower to pull into position and the rearing house at Ednam to move. How to improve yield and quality of Oats? Bioscence Independent trials at loddington over 4 years helped to provide very valuable data, Oats showed an average yield increase of 12%. The Bioscence approach helped increase natural soil biology and improved plant root mass. Every 1cm deeper your roots go, you access 130 tons of soil across 1/ha, therefore improving plant feeding, leading to better yield, milling quality, plant health and stress reduction. We achieved these results and still managed to reduce nitrogen by 10%. On farm trials over many years have also shown yield increases of 10-20%. Consistent improvements in bushel weights were noted, helping to meet market demands and improve yield. Franklin Soil Fertility liquid bio stimulant can easily be applied with other crop treatments, is tank mixable, safe and simple to use.

• Improved root mass • Better plant feeding • Improved biology • 12% increase yield • Improved milling quality • 10% less nitrogen • £57/ha improved margin (based on £112/ton selling price)

Talking......... Arable

October 8th 2017

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Well then, that was September! It wasn’t up to much really, was it? Now we are into October and we finally managed to finish combining last Tuesday (3/10/17) which is the latest ever for me, and that includes the one and (definitely) only time I grew Spring beans. Thankfully we are better off than some who still have substantial areas to cut, of both wheat and barley. Although it was a late finish it has been our best ever harvest, in terms of yields, quality and (despite the weather) moisture. While a portion of all the crops were cut at 21-22% moisture the vast majority was below 19, with oats being the usual with green straw but grain at 16%. Despite the poor September weather we have made good progress with potato harvest over the last week. The new stores are rapidly filling with Maris Piper now. Quality is not too bad with the usual pockets of common scab, greening and growth cracks scattered throughout the fields. This coming week will see our first ever potatoes leaving the farm for the pack house, so here’s hoping they meet the buyers standards. With combining being finished we have managed to get started on establishment of the 2018 harvest. I am planning on 750 acres of wheat and 250 of hybrid rye so there is plenty to go at, however we do have excess drilling capacity in the form of a 6m power harrow and drill combination which means we can get a lot done in a short time, providing we can Oh dear, what have you done? keep in front with cultivation! Last spring we decided to take a new tack with drilling to try and reduce headland compaction. Instead of drilling the middle, then loosening the headland prior to drilling them last we now drill 36m round the outside first, then turn in a loop to reduce the area run on when drilling the middles. It maybe looks daft to the neighbours but as long as conditions are reasonable it seems to work ok, and when conditions get wet we usually fall back on ploughing and drilling the middle first anyway which keeps the outside of the field as uncompacted as possible. This decision was based on looking at yield maps from the combine harvester, rather worryingly the outside 24m of our fields were yielding 85% of the inside of the field. Now we all know that It takes two! headlands are the worst part but putting a figure on it concentrates the mind. Obviously some of this variation is down to tree shading, poor drainage and subsoil compaction due to our heavy root crop rotation but if we can reduce at least some of the damage then hopefully it pays dividends. Obviously the ultimate would be to go to a controlled traffic setup but any benefit gained in the one or two years of cereals between root crops would be minimal. Unfortunately I will not be able to measure all of the benefits from this change in policy due to intermittent problems with the mapping kit on the combine harvester. As per usual these problems only present themselves when you’ve just got going on the only dry day of the week. Overall however it has been a relatively incident free harvest, with only a burst belt and a broken knife holding up the New Holland combine. The same cannot be said for the potato harvester though, a new computer was needed for controlling the cleaning units and we suffered from a burst web. Both of these things are expensive but given that the machine is on its 8th harvest it’s not too bad. STOP PRESS, someone, who shall remain nameless, got the harvester stuck!

Talking......... from Lincolnshire

October 6th 2017

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Being a farmer with blackgrass in this area requires the patience of a saint. All around the Parish there are drills flying about planting wheat in clouds of dust, and all I am left to do is count blackgrass numbers, and try to ascertain when they have slowed down germinating. This will only be when it cools down significantly from the day time temperatures we are currently experiencing. Experience has shown me that despite the “experts” telling us to drill from mid-October onwards, that drilling date can still be too early and the optimum is late October. To help keep me from the fields, I am yet to organise any wheat seed as I know if it is in the shed I will be itching to plant it. The oilseed rape has now grown significantly well to escape all the pests. Part of my woes were caused by an extremely long germination period, most likely caused by the area behind the tine being a bit “slotty” and therefore some seed dropping deeper than others. This will need looking at for next year. The other issue is in one field the deeper tine seems to have brought up some blackgrass, despite not being moved at depth for more than 5 years. My mind wonders whether I ought to be moving towards a wider, faster and shallower approach to direct drilling oilseed rape. My seedhawk does struggle in chopped straw with its • Hedge Cutting twin tine arrangement so that is not currently an option, although I am currently in contact with a Canadian Company who make parts • Grain Crimping/Bruising to convert the seedhawk from a double tine to a single tine opener. As my term as the Chairman of the local NFU branch draws to a • All Arable Work carried out close, I am left to ponder the future of such a structure. We have • Stubble to Stubble contracts been faced with reducing numbers of attendees at meetings, to the embarrassing number of 6 at one meeting; combined with the lack • Complete Muck Spreading service of enthusiasm from my generation to hold a position of office. The • 14 & 16t Dump Trailers for hire branch structure was established to pass information from NFU Head Office to members, but this information pathway has now been superseded by email and social media so perhaps whilst our Please contact: futures are balanced delicately in the hands of some fairly average NEWMILLS, LAUDER politicians, the NFU should look at its own future and particularly the structure of the branch system and see how it can be changed to Tel: 01578 722 273 Mob: 07850 040 160 appeal to members? Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. We’ve had a good week. We’ve been able to get onto the ground and do some cultivation and now have the spring wheat, barley, broccoli and one block of peas sown. We also managed to get the last 2000 lambs shorn and have sent another 1000 away to slaughter. It will be interesting to see how the lambs kill out. I’m picking that they are perhaps 5kgs live-weight lighter than we had hoped due to the long wet miserable winter they had to endure. Spring has been wet and slow so there has been little of the compensatory growth in the lambs that we would normally expect at this time of year. The cows have nearly finished calving and milk production is slowing increasing. We are now working to a tight nitrogen loss programme for all the farms. The cropping farms, because they are predominantly heavy The Boss spring soils, lose very little N, but the dairy farm is modelled to lose some. Research has identified a correlation cleaning between the milk urea content and the amount of N in a cow’s urine patch. We’ve found that by feeding sugar beets to the cows through the spring we halve our milk urea measurements and also get better conception rates at mating. We are looking to get some of this science confirmed, but if it is it will mean we can easily meet our N loss targets without compromising production. The other good news is that the pigs are producing lots of babies and these are selling very readily. The proceeds of the pig sales is all collected in cash and stored in a tin in the jam cupboard. It is raided on special occasions. One of these occasions was our trip to Scotland in July. In preparation I took a wad of $100 notes into the bank to buy pounds and euros. The teller told me that she couldn’t take my cash because that might be money laundering. I pointed out that that was exactly what I was trying to do and tried not to look like a criminal. That didn’t work so I had to be rescued by the bank manager who explained to the teller that I was in fact normally a relatively respectable member of the farming community when I wasn’t masquerading as a dodgy drug dealer. Most of my bundle of pounds got used reimbursing Philly Lee for fines I incurred driving the wrong way down bus only motorway ramps on the outskirts of Edinburgh. I think the real criminals are the administrators of the Scottish roading network. Loading wheat for the Flourmill

Calibrate Measures up to Parliamentary Review An energy company based in Northumberland that provides ‘hands off’ renewable solutions to UK businesses has been featured in this year's Parliamentary Review of Energy. Calibrate Energy Engineering is the only North Northumberland company to be included in this critical Government paper. Immensely proud of achieving this recognition, they now have big plans to help more businesses in our region and further afield. Calibrate Energy Engineering based in Chatton is a leading provider of ground source heatpump solutions. These intelligent heatpumps harness the natural energy resources surrounding a building and use them to deliver low-cost, reliable heating and hot water. Their award-winning technology is used successfully by many commercial, high energy users, from hotel complexes to student accommodation blocks and agricultural facilities including grain drying. The financial savings are impressive and immediate as for each kilowatt of energy used to run the heatpump, 3 – 4 kilowatts of energy are produced. With 40% of CO2 emissions caused by the heating and cooling of our buildings, utilising environmentally-friendly energy has never been so important for securing our planet's future. In the UK, as well as many other areas of the developed world, there has been a massive increase in support for sustainable energy. Shane and Susie McDonald founded Calibrate Energy Engineering having previously owned and operated a similar

company in New Zealand. They sold this successful business with 15 staff after 7 years of operation. They've now focussed their keen business eyes on the North East, where many businesses are now set to reap the savings provided by their heatpump systems. Hall Garth Hotel and Country Club in Darlington is receiving a 400% Return on Investment after having the cutting-edge system installed to provide hot water for rooms, radiators, a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, as well as heating their pub and gym. Director, Susie McDonald, says, “We are incredibly proud to be featured in the recent Parliamentary Review of the UK's energy situation. The review focusses on leading energy companies across the whole sector, from nuclear and fossil fuels to sustainable energy and electric car providers. As a featured sustainable energy company, we hope this will pave the way for us to help more businesses save money and maximise their energy use. The North East is a region traditionally associated with fossil fuel production, so it seems a fitting location for companies involved in providing environmentally sound energy. Our expert engineers, scientists and consultants are all very excited about the coming months.” “As our planet's natural resources dwindle due to population and industrial growth, we will all be increasingly seeking sustainable energy sources that can meet our requirements in a cost-effective way. At Calibrate Energy Engineering we’re inviting all NorthEast businesses to play their part in protecting the environment and to start saving themselves money,” said Shane McDonald. For more information and if you would like a complimentary copy of this year’s Parliamentary Review please contact Calibrate.

On Our Farm Looking back this harvest will go down as one of the better ones, yields have been good, quality has held up and the prices have been a lot better than last year. The process of gathering in though has been fraught to say the least. We averaged a field a week in September, and it took most of the month to harvest the 50 hectares of spring barley. A dry day was followed by six wet ones, and it was not until September 22nd that the last field was combined. The investment in the drier has more than paid off with the wettest barley coming in One more field finished at 26%. The drying floor has coped superbly and although it might not be the quickest system it is very reliable and the finished product is evenly dried throughout the bulk. The knock on effect of such a dull and wet period is that there is an awful lot of straw waiting to be baled and that rotations have been compromised. Last week I made the decision not to sow any of the winter barley seed that has been delivered and is on contract for next year, the ground is too wet, too cold and would really not provide an ideal seedbed for a crop that does not like such soil conditions. A week later I have changed my mind as I cannot see how we can get oilseed rape sown next year without growing winter barley. I know the yield will be compromised but I cannot see how we can get the rotation back on track. Our soils are just too heavy to grow rape after spring barley. Straw quality is extremely poor, we baled when we probably should have been patient and the result is mouldy hard bales that do not give the cattle the bedding they need and it takes longer to bed as the machine struggles to break up the bales. Our cattle are never the cleanest and I set aside a day a fortnight to clip fat cattle Wheat bales may look prior to slaughter. The fat price did not dry on the outside take the dip that hit us hard last year and

October 10th 2017 has held up well. The grazing cattle were housed at the end of last month, and are growing well on the rations which are split according to weight. Someone watched me this morning filling the diet feeder and as the last of the seven ingredients went in he said it was more like making a cake. To date 1200 tonnes of grain has been over the drying floor, this has used 110,000kws of heat which has been supplied by 38 tonnes of woodchip. We need around 60 tonnes of dry wood during harvest which means a visit from the chipper on a monthly basis. My wood supplier has told me that they do not have any more seasoned timber so we will need to invest in a two year stock pile to ensure we have sufficient. Slugs seem to get worse every year, with control measures being restricted to limited applications and the enforcement of no metaldehyde on headrigs has made effective control very difficult. I came in from shutting up the hens one night last week and found six slugs of varying sizes and types on our outside table, how they climbed up there is a mystery and by the next morning they had gone.

Talking......... Livestock

October 9th 2017

Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. “Beyond the gate” was a title I noticed in another publication and I wondered what would that would be like for them because here at home anything through any gate is beyond normal wet for the time of year. I will not complain though as we are in a more fortunate situation than some as we only have 3 acres of grain left to cut which is still standing and we have started silage stocks at normal time without completely using up the ”insurance silo”. Having said that we will have to be careful as there is still a lot of straw perishing out there. A few light stock and a third of the cows are still out but nowhere near enough grass is being utilised. With the dry having been in a while it has allowed them to be managed ideally and it will be interesting to see if they perform any better. If it is an early Spring and we can get them out earlier it would be beneficial as 180 days in the house is more than long enough. Calving has commenced with the first 3 being heifers which is nice and there should be a steady flow now for a while which shall help boost the milk being sold. We have been given the chance to contract a set amount of milk for 3 years at a set price to our milk buyer and after some deliberation we did this, and like any farming gamble we will know in 3 years time whether we should have increased or decreased our percentage. In the meantime prices are good and are offsetting the decrease in contract work due to the bad weather. It is yet another example of the benefit of mixed farming. I hope beef prices remain firm in the short term as we will be starting to kill this week to ease the numbers. In the springtime it was decided to roof the silos to reduce the amount of dirty water to be collected, less water damage at the walls and siloface and give us the ability to manage our feeding time better. This project is just about on time and the benefits are being seen already but just like any project it could be a while before it is complete. It could be hard to equate any financial benefit as it will not be increasing production, but like a lot of things in farming it will help to minimise losses. As it is Harvest Service time of the year it reminds us how much we have to be thankful for. Yes harvest isn’t complete and yes we may have cause to grumble but as the hurricane list is going to run out of alphabet and localised floods are wiping out some areas, we have to remember that the rainbow in the sky reminds us that there will never be another flood over the whole earth. But as I know that I am not perfect and governments worldwide and locally are making appalling decisions and individuals are creating mass murders, maybe we are getting a mild form of the weather that we truly deserve!!

Alnwick Properties Attention all landlords and estate managers in England From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Government’s minimum energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. Scotland is still looking at this matter. If domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F, G, H or worse then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to it’s poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete draft EPC reports for your properties now so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for England and the Scottish Borders.

Hugo Lee is farm manager at Whitsbury Farm and Stud near Fordingbridge in Hampshire. The soils are predominantly chalk downland with some clay cap. Cropping covers 1500 acres and includes wheat, barley, oilseed rape, peas and poppies. 60 cattle are finished annually and 250 ewe lambs are sold every September. The farm is also home to the famous Whitsbury Manor Stud and Whitsbury racing stables. Just like harvest the wheat drilling campaign has been a frustratingly stop start affair due to continued wet weather. The ground only really started drying out at the end of last week and since then we have been flat out drilling. I hope that by the weekend all the wheat will be in the ground, rolled, sprayed and slug pelleted where necessary. This year we are growing two wheat varieties Siskin and Zyatt. I have decided to stick with Siskin despite the shedding issues we experienced this harvest. It has fantastic agronomical features with a good septoria rating and is reasonably high yielding. Zyatt is a new group 1 breadmaking wheat which is replacing Crusoe. There has been an interesting development over the last month Stopped to have lunch with the children regarding morphine poppy growing in the UK. An Australian company has signed a five year deal with the British processing plant that used to process the raw poppy straw. Initially this seemed very exciting news however, as further information on the deal came to light and details of the payment structure were published I began to have my doubts. Understandably they are paying much less than Johnson Matthey did however, after running some gross margins we would be making more money out of linseed than poppies under the new payment terms. Poppies are a very risky crop to grow and if the margins are tight anyway, is it worth taking the Will poppies be grown again at Whitsbury? risk? On the other hand they are another break crop which can be grown around the gallops where we can’t grow oilseed rape and they are a fantastic entry for wheat. I am tempted to grow a small are this year and see how we get on. The prolonged cool damp weather over the last month has really slowed the rape down and phoma is starting to rear its ugly head already. The most forward fields have been sprayed with 0.5l/ha of Kestrel and a graminicide to tidy up the rest of the spring barley volunteers which have been very bad this year. The fodder radish cover crop is looking the best I have ever seen it thanks to the wet weather. With over 40ha of it they will certainly be no shortage of winter feed for the sheep this year. October signifies the start of one of the most important times of year for the stud as the sales commence in Newmarket. It begins with yearling sales, followed by foal sales and finishes with the mare sales in December. I hope for all the stud team that the sales go well and that the market remains as strong as it has done over the last few years.

Talking......... Organic

October 10th 2017

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. The year is marching on with fat lambs going as and when ready. Having divided the lambs into short, medium and long term keep we are now managing them appropriately. The short keep lambs are on the brassicas, which they are grazing well. Medium and long term keep are being rotationally grazed on red / white clover grass leys. We have some July sown Brassicas for finishing later lambs on once all the leys are finished. Tups will be going out end of November and the ewes are now all set stocked ready for tupping. They will receive a fluke dose pre tupping and be tailed. Grass quality and quantity is starting to decline so the fat cattle will come in shortly as we need the grass for the sheep. They will be given a white drench, for worms and adult fluke and their backs will be clipped out. Their finishing mix will be red clover silage and wholecrop. Next week we will scan all of the cows and heifers. Calves will receive a white wormer and their first pneumonia vaccine. We are busy installing the new bull pens as well as making a few repairs to the winter housing. The hens are doing well. It has been a steep learning curve but we are enjoying the challenge of a new enterprise. We are constantly trying to keep their environment right, maintain good bird health, feather cover and keep productivity up. As our birds are fully beaked we need to maintain the right environment and keep them busy and happy. Feather pecking and injurious pecking are problems we really don’t want. We had a challenge earlier in the year and the birds lost some body weight. We moved their feed to a crumb, which they loved. It has enabled us to get the body weight back up, but now egg size and feed intake are a challenge, so it’s back onto the meal for the birds, which will also hopefully occupy them for longer and reduce boredom. We have fitted a solar array onto the south facing roof of the egg production unit. Theoretically we can now produce 40kw of renewable electricity on the farm and should now produce all of our own electricity requirements from the solar and our upgraded 20kw wind turbine with surplus electric to export. The panels are a good ‘fit’ as most of the electricity use is during the daylight hours. We hosted a farm visit last month from some final year agricultural students from Aberystwyth University. They had been on a weeks tour of the North East and visited a number of different farms and farming systems across the region. It’s always encouraging to have a good group who ask great questions and are interested in what we are doing and why we are doing it. Good luck to them in their final year.
