Blinkbonny Kwik Mix

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

TWO PULLS AND A BABY TO CARE FOR

June 2018 What a sweet new addition we have to the family at Sandystones. With my help Posy Lee is thriving, we take her for walks, rock her to sleep and generally assist Jess with her busy life of bringing up three young children. I have had a steady month, for a change no health problems to report of. I have started when I am supposed to and stop when requested. My engine sounds sweet and for my age I feel pretty fit. As for my driver that’s another story, with the young new boss in charge I don’t see the old man around as much as I used to which is a relief although I am still punished by him being the only driver who is allowed to sit behind my wheel. I have pulled two sheds in the past four weeks, the first one was for nice Mr Gibby who has taken over Giles Henry’s Wendy writes two hen houses at Oakwood Mill. Pulling off the muck went smoothly and I was soon heading back through Selkirk. We returned a week later to pull the shed into its new position. He likes to put the skids on steel channels which I have to say makes my job much easier in a year’s time. A fortnight later we went over to Bill Brown’s farm at Bonnington. We had to be there for 10:30 as he was having a meeting with a Soil Association adviser. It wasn’t until 12:30 that they appeared from Bill’s house to do the pull and then he expected me to show off in front of 5 people without warning. Well I got myself in state, the cable came off the drum, he tried to drive away from the shed and got the cable jammed. We then spent an embarrassing 10 minutes getting ourselves sorted out before he could play the cable out and eventually pull the house. Not much in the diary for next month but I do have the Border Union Show to look forward although it is distressing for me to be looking such a wreck. All the talk of repainting has come to nothing. I need help!

What is a Heat / Chill Solution A Ground source Heatpump uses heat naturally occurring in the ground, the heat is increased with a 300% efficient Heatpump to the required heating output whilst deriving the 20 year Government RHI Tariff. A bi-product of the Heatpump’s heating cycle is chilled water, this is used to cool the milk to the desired temperature anywhere between. A normally costly process is being done using the normally wasted cool water.

How the system works A Heatpump manages a revolutionary Heat / Chill process. The Heatpump is located in a customised plant room that is manufactured in our workshop and delivered to site ready to be commissioned. A bespoke controller can operate the Heat / Chill Solution via a cloud based system enabling Calibrate to monitor all aspects of the process and terrify generation meters online. For more than two decades, Lloyd Ltd has been at the heart of the agricultural community in The Borders, and has always looked to extend its product range in line with the changing needs of its customers, hence the addition of Isuzu to its portfolio. The company’s branch in Dumfries is already a very successful Isuzu dealer so extending the scope of these operations into the Kelso branch’s area is a natural progression, which is being taken on with Lloyd Ltd’s usual commitment and enthusiasm. Lloyd Ltd Kelso’s Dealer Principal, Stewart Crighton, commented: “We are extremely excited to have added the Isuzu franchise to our branch operations. Isuzu has an exceptional reputation for its pick-up range, having won several awards already this year, so we know it is going to be of interest and of use to our customers. With its useful 3.5-tonne towing capacity and new engine which gives both impressive performance and excellent fuel economy, the Isuzu range is ideally suited

to life in our area. We already have some demonstrators available for test-drives and are also adding some quality used pick-ups to our selection to give our customers extra choice. Exciting times ahead!”

The awards to which Stewart refers have been plentiful this year: • ‘Most Reliable Pickup’ at the inaugural Professional Pickup & 4x4 Awards; • WhatVan? ‘Best Pickup Of The Year’ and • Professional Pickup & 4x4 Magazine’s ‘Most Reliable Pickup’. An impressive selection showcasing the success of Isuzu’s innovative and customer-led approach to developing their vehicles. At Lloyd Ltd Kelso, you will be able to try them for yourself and their Isuzu Sales Specialist, Gary Philip, will be on hand to help you find the right Isuzu for your needs. With an impressive array of standard features and specification options, your Isuzu can be tailored to your exact requirements for both work or leisure, so visit your new Isuzu dealer, Lloyd Ltd Kelso, today.

How to improve yield and quality of Oats? Bioscence Independent trials at loddington over 4 years helped to provide very valuable data, Oats showed an average yield increase of 12%. The Bioscence approach helped increase natural soil biology and improved plant root mass. Every 1cm deeper your roots go, you access 130 tons of soil across 1/ha, therefore improving plant feeding, leading to better yield, milling quality, plant health and stress reduction. We achieved these results and still managed to reduce nitrogen by 10%. On farm trials over many years have also shown yield increases of 10-20%. Consistent improvements in bushel weights were noted, helping to meet market demands and improve yield. Franklin Soil Fertility liquid bio stimulant can easily be applied with other crop treatments, is tank mixable, safe and simple to use.

• Improved root mass • Better plant feeding • Improved biology • 12% increase yield • Improved milling quality • 10% less nitrogen • £57/ha improved margin (based on £112/ton selling price)

Talking......... Arable

June 10th 2018

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Is summer here to stay? There is a stark contrast between the weather now (10/6/18) and a month ago. Temperatures have reached the mid 20’s and the ground has dried out faster than you can say “fire up the irrigators”. There was heavy rain a week ago but it didn’t get closer than 5 miles. This means that apart from 4mm this morning, it has now been dry for 4 weeks. If this had been April, I wouldn’t be worried but the cereal crops are either flowering or about to, so they now need significant rain to fulfil their potential. As always though there are things to learn from this. Different wheat varieties certainly cope with drought better than others - the old stager Istabraq usually does ok although it’s costing more and more to keep mildew out of it. Legend has it that taller strawed varieties do better in drought conditions which certainly includes Istabraq. The hybrid rye is also looking well (it’s now over 5 foot tall). It’s had perfect conditions during pollination which helps to reduce the risk of ergot (this is exacerbated by cool, damp weather) and also has a huge amount of pollen which ensures quick fertilisation of the grain sites so preventing ergot infection. This was one of the main worries when I started growing this crop but I’ve seen more ergot in wheat than I’ve ever seen in rye. We’ve commenced irrigation on potatoes to build moisture in the ridges prior to tuber initiation. This is an especially critical time for the Maris Piper which is very prone to scab and so needs careful water management. Unfortunately fuel prices are on the rise again meaning that irrigation is becoming an ever more expensive job and it puts increasing pressure on using water efficiently. To this end, we have soil moisture sensors in each soil type to give a guide to water requirements. They are not a complete answer but certainly help to guide management decisions when combined with a spade! We are now into plot tour season as well with chemical and trial companies running open days. I always find these days interesting but it is important to keep a sense of perspective. They never seem to run trials on light, sandy land which limits the amount I can take from them at times but as long as you go in with your eyes open, there is always something to learn. Anything that can be picked up at these events helps to guide decisions at a farm level, and even if you use an agronomist to walk your crops it gives you a “sense check” on what they are proposing. Management of the cereals (apart from praying for rain) is now drawing to a close with wheat, spring oats and barley due to receive their final spray this coming week. The last fungicide on wheat is always an especially difficult one to get right, with product choice and timing to consider. These are both important but when you learn that even the BEST options only give 50% control of disease you realise that good research and advice are paramount. Maybe I will learn something at those trials days after all! 26

Alnwick Properties Important reminder

Attention all landlords and property managers in England

From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Governments minumium energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. This does not apply in Scotland yet. This applies to listed buildings and property in conservation areas. If the domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F – G or H or worse, then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers, because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to is poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete a draft EPC calculation for your properties, give advice so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better and then produce your legal EPC document that will last 10 years. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) for property in England and Scotland.

On Our Farm

June 13th 2018 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 4000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant poults are raised. As we approach our busiest time of year on the farm I have been desperately trying to get all the outstanding jobs completed. Last week we cut our organic grass/red clover silage which yielded a disappointing 12t/ha. However the quality was very good and with a high dry matter it should make for some good quality feed. I am glad that we only left it to wilt for one day because any longer with the current high temperatures would have resulted in hay which would not have Ag bagged very well! As the old man has always told me its better to get it too dry than too wet ‘it’s very expensive bagging water’. We have First cut silage another 12ha of grass to cut next week which we will round bale. We find that the Ag Bags can heat up in the summer when we have fewer cattle inside and are therefore feeding less. The arable crops are looking ok despite the lack of rain. We were very fortunate to get 30mm a couple of weekends ago which really got us out of trouble. I really feel for those further north especially on the lighter ground who have had little to no rainfall since the end of the spring drilling campaign and are now starting to suffer badly from drought. Crops have fairly rushed through their growth stages over the last month in this warm weather and despite the very late spring winter wheat T2’s were applied almost exactly the same time as last year. I really find it amazing how Mother Nature has an incredible ability to catch up with herself. The best crop on the farm is our new lawn which was only sown by hand a month ago and looks fantastic. This is mainly due to the irrigators running continuously since drilling and the endless sunshine. We delivered our earliest ever pheasants with 8500 going to Lancashire at the end of May. Having converted our flatbed trailer over the winter we are now able to deliver 3300 at a time. The new design is much easier to load/unload and the air flow is much improved so there is no risk of birds overheating in warm weather. The improvements to the Sandystones steading continue. Last week we concreted two cattle court floors. It involved 7 loads of concrete which was all laid by lunchtime, a fantastic effort and a big thank you to the old man, Tony and the boss for helping. All our cattle courts are now concreted, this makes mucking out much quicker and more efficient. It also completely eliminates the chance of stones getting into the muck which can cause serious problems when it comes to spreading. We have also rebuilt a feed face which had rusted through. It has been rebuilt using crash barriers which have worked extremely well. I hope this fine weather holds so we can get the silage made next week and that it is dry for the Highland Show. See you there. The concrete gang

Talking........New Zealand

June 10th 2018 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. Despite the onset of winter and enough gloomy weather to make an Irishman proud, there seems to be a lot going on. William sold 450 of the best lambs we bought in from Southland and made a good $60/head margin. He sent me south to buy a unit load of lambs to replace them from an old friend which was expensive. The vendor and I waged a bottle of whisky on the lambs’ weights…I lost and they ended up costing $114/head which will only leave a predicted $50 margin for William. However, with 4000 lambs on board, the lamb trade should be a highlight of the year. He has taken on the lease of another 80 ha of beautiful soil next to our Raunui farm, so he is farming 480ha when the weather allows. The gorgeous banker is expecting their second baby next month. The wheat price has shot up to $445/t for next year’s harvest which is a $100/t increase. This is good news only tempered by the problems of getting wheat in the ground this autumn because of the wet; but I’ve whinged about the wet for the last couple of months and won’t bore you again. The cows were milking really well through April and early May but hit the wall when we got the last lot of floods in May. They dried off early and are happily eating their way through the kale up at the winter resort. The bloody dutch dairy mafia have brought Mycoplasma Bovis into NZ, so herd and farm bio-security has become a very big issue to contain the spread of this pernicious disease. The government has decided to try and eradicate MB in NZ by slaughtering all the infected herds and putting some quite severe limitations on stock movement. This has been a difficult decision for the government and industry to make but I think it is the right one. I can’t see how our extensive grazing Happy cows at winter resort systems would survive if MB was allowed to continue to spread, especially if it got into the beef herds. Having our own wintering country and being able to run a closed system is giving us some comfort that we won’t get infected. Tom and Charlotte are rebuilding the house up at the winter resort, which is an exciting project watching the new house slowly taking shape. Just for clarity, on our last trip to Scotland I noticed a wee shift in culture. I gathered that in Scotland a cottage can be a 6 bedroom 2 storied house whereas Charlotte and Tom’s house will only be a 3 bedroom single storied cottage! They hope to be in the new house by late spring. And lastly I have had official notice that I am not a young man anymore. I found this news slightly depressing as they wheeled me into the operating room to replace a worn out knee. I am still in rehab mode which is testing the boss’ patience as she points out quite often that because of me we can’t be somewhere warmer. 42

Talking.........from the boundary

June 13

th

2018

We had one of our biennial benchmarking meetings last week, this time with the Jeffery family at Bielgrange. We are eight farms that were originally in Business Improvement groups. We then became a QMS Focus on Figures group which was funded for a year. There was so much enthusiasm and positivity from the meetings that we decided to keep getting together and finance any costs. We are a diverse group, the common thread is that we all keep cattle mostly Guy Lee sucklers although at Sandystones we have no breeding cows just finishers. We meet twice a At Bielgrange above Dunbar, year usually on one of the members farms, where we discuss topics of the hosts choosing. In the winter looking at last year’s reseed meeting we produce our annual accounts and have a robust and honest discussion about each businesses financial performance and how these might be improved. There are 3 sons and one daughter (an International rugby player no less!) who are all becoming involved in the running of the farm. The benefits of such cooperation are immeasurable and there is no doubt we will carry on for many years. The reason I am writing this is that we went round the table last week saying how the spring had effected production. Those with lambing had a tough time, calving performance was mixed with a lot of discussion about a target 90% calves weaned to cows bulled. As we have no cows I reported that my farm manager and I had a success rate of 95% agreement in the running of Sandystones! For the Spring Bank holiday Philly and I went to France to visit the supplier of our pheasant eggs and day old chicks. We flew with Ryanair from Edinburgh to Nantes which is a challenge in itself trying to avoid any unforeseen charges at the airport. I was reasonably successful although I manged to only book our suitcase one way and had to pay double what it should have cost for the return journey! We spent a very interesting day with Olivier the commercial Director at L’Envol de Retz, which is a cooperative with 45 farmer members who all supply eggs, rear hens and work very closely for mutual PML, Mathieu, Patrice & Olivier benefit. He showed us round one of their two hatcheries. The larger one we saw was hatching 400,000 eggs per week. These are mostly for the UK market, although there are deliveries 6 week old hen pheasants made weekly all over Europe. Olivier also took us to one of their members farms, Mathieu farms with his father Patrice Thabardp at L’Anfreniere a 160ha organic farm growing wheat, barley, rye sunflowers and other arable crops. They have 5000 laying pheasant hens. We also saw 12,000 day old grey partridges in one shed and 10,000 six week old ringneck hen pheasants, which will be next year’s breeding stock, in another old quail rearing shed. This part of their business gave employment to four people. Mathieu had set up a bakery on the farm and was making bread which he sold at farmers markets. I was very impressed by the success of the coop and how it was mutually beneficial. All the eggs fed into a central point, the hygiene was first class, the organisation was efficient and well managed, and as long the Laying hen pheasants in raised cages shooting industry in the UK does not become subject to political interference, will have a strong business here. 44

Talking........ from Lincolnshire

@DR_Rural

June 11th 2018

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Earlier in the year I mentioned my enormous combine repair bill from the winter appraisal conducted by the local dealer. Well the negotiation went well and I left the aftercare manager’s office with a smile on my face. This only lasted as long as it took the fitters to do the work, whereupon they found other problems which ramped the invoice back up again. With this and Minister Gove’s words of “productivity and efficiency” ringing in my ears I set off to see a neighbour to float the idea of sharing a combine going forwards. In principle this is a great idea, and something we used to do when silaging back in Sussex. 48 day old Vertigo spring The resultant spreadsheet showed that co-operation would increase the operational cost by £1/acre from beans already 650mm tall my current levels which wasn’t the plan. Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. It is great that our hen house is now full again. I do not think anyone has enjoyed it being empty including ourselves, the team and the bank manager! The first turn around has been a learning curve and hard graft, however now the birds are back in, it’s like we’ve had them for years...we won’t mention the stress when the feed track buckled just before the hens arrived and the fact we couldn’t get the lights to go down on the first night!! Our grass seeds are struggling with the dry weather. The rain we have had has not been enough to kick-start them away and no doubt it will come just as we start to cut the silage. The silage has gone to seed due to the drought stress and needs to be off as soon as possible. Hopefully the much needed rain will help the second cut. Lambs have all had a dose for nematodirus and now faecal egg counts are showing strongyle above the threshold for dosing. Bulls are to receive an MOT and semen test this week prior to going to work on the 1st July. The heifers have almost completed their vaccination schedule and are looking very promising. Even though there isn’t much grass about, the stock are really enjoying the sun on their backs and are thriving. Hedges, trees, rhubarb, fruit trees as well as docks, thistles and nettles are all doing wonderfully well even though the grass around them struggles. We have just been granted planning permission to convert a stone granary into a holiday cottage. Hopefully this project will get going soon, we just need to get the quotes in and get going. I suspect the interior decoration of it will prove to be more challenging than the building element. Claire has warned me that I might have a nasty surprise about the cost of furnishing it! With this project and other irons in the fire we need to free up a bit of time to project manage and will soon start to look for either more part time help or even a full time position with the hens. On the political front there have been two disappointments for me this week. One is the move of Land Rover Discovery production from Solihull to Slovakia, which will probably mean the new Defender will be made there too! Surely Brexit should mean producing these vehicles in Great Britain and then selling them all over the world. A real shame for our iconic “British” brand and a real worry for all the jobs that will be lost in our country. The second is the lack of input from our fellow farmers on the Health and Harmony consultation. The numbers from a CLA policy meeting show that there were 44,000 respondents, with 38,000 of them coming from campaign responses. This leaves only 6,000 farmers actually taking the time to respond. It is a real concern to me that there are so few willing to put forward their thoughts into how our future agricultural policy could be shaped. We should take note that the RSPB submitted 3000 individual responses. We need to make our voice louder and get our points across or we will end up with policies for the environment and nothing for food. Both are important! 48

June 10th 2018

Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. As I mentioned last month, we went to the Balmoral Show, it was very good and there was plenty of craic. It was good to catch up with some people and be able to give some “stick” but as per usual I had to be able to take the “stick” fired back. Northern Ireland produce once again was showcased very well with lots to be proud of and now that it is a four day show any exhibitors earned their income as I’m sure by Saturday night they didn’t need rocked to sleep. As there has been a continuous whirlwind of work done since that, we got a chance to attend the Armagh Show this weekend which has improved and grown considerably since I last attended. As a follower of the Limousin breed I as always like to see them judged with many super animals in the line-up. However, I was a little disappointed to see a few which had lost their true breed characteristics as they were too extreme with muscle and had lost their style and sometimes the nice lighter colouring around the eyes. This also caused me to look at our 10 yr old duke the next morning to see if I could be brave enough to re-enter the show ring again, what do you think looking at the picture? In farming you should be careful of what you wish for as we wanted dry weather and it came big time and lots and lots of work was completed with silage going in with what has to be massively high sugars but at this stage a little rain would be nice. With everything happening at once we had to go back and forth from reseeding, spraying, silage and grazing management which meant that the tractors were grubby and had to be serviced mid-flight but at least the dry conditions were easy on the machinery and it all performed quite well. With the ground being so dry and hot, slurry hasn’t been applied to the cut ground yet so whenever it has rained a little we will have to get on with it. Fertiliser is being sown any way as the dew at night seems to activate some of it at least. Grazing will soon be tight but with rain forecast and a little silage ground brought into the rotation we should be ok. Most of the calves have been turned out which hasn’t happened as early in a few years and they are happy and looking well, but the last few to be turned out seemed to get a little sun burned even with being in the shade at the hottest time of the day but thankfully it hasn’t made them sick. Milk yield is holding up quite well considering the average number of days calved and now that they will soon be out nearly 2 months their feet have hardened up quite well but they have drawn to my attention a few areas on the cow lanes which would need repaired. I will push on here and be busy and make the most of the good weather whilst being thankful for it. 50

BRYCE SUMA CONTRIBUTES TO CHARITABLE CAUSE

BORDERS ‘TARTAN GIRAFFE’ RAISES OVER £300,000 FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE A special ball organised to support Scotland rugby player Doddie Weir has raised over £300,000, thanks to incredible support from across the farming community. Three of Weir’s friends, former Kelso and South rugby players Stewart Bennet and David Baird, and Douglas Stephen, from the world of farming, got together after the British and Irish Lion was diagnosed with MND and appealed to the Borders community to help to raise funds for Weir’s campaign to improve research into MND. They staged the ‘Tartan Giraffe Ball’ at Springwood Park in Kelso in January, quickly selling out over 500 tickets, and with all costs now paid, have handed over cheques to the Doddie Weir charities for £310,177. The event attracted 180 auction donations from across the UK, including the use of two private jets, unique holidays, a wealth of sporting memorabilia from leading celebrities and donations of agricultural machinery. The Scottish and North Northumberland farming community came out in force and among a wealth of donations from the farming world, a Bryce Suma Post Driver from the Bryce family and a 32-ft Stewart’s trailer donated by James and Mandy Stewart raised more than £25,000

Stephen explained: “We have experience of friends and/or family who have suffered with MND and when Doddie’s diagnosis was confirmed we felt it was a good opportunity to invite people across the Borders to come Doddie with Andrew, Stuart and Jock Bryce together and help by Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue and John Beattie’s tackle this terrible illness. “We all know Doddie well and his famous on- ‘Ruckstars’ band. field work ethic has been to the fore off the field Notes: The event organisers and foundation in the way he has sought information about trustees have decided that the money raised will MND and gone out of his way to raise money to be split between two charities with £210,177 fund research. MY NAME’5 DODDIE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES FIRST INVESTMENT INTO MND RESEARCH Doddie Weir and the trustees of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation have agreed their first investment into MND research. The Foundation will support the work of Chris Shaw, Professor of Neurology and Neurogenetics, and his team at King’s College London who are spearheading Gene Therapy for Sporadic Motor Neurone Disease. They have agreed an investment of £400,000 to help Professor Shaw and his work. This follows the independent report commissioned by the Trustees to help steer their strategy for investing in research into the causes of MND and seek potential cures. Professor Shaw said: “This is absolutely terrific news. This is a game changing commitment by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to employ the latest gene therapy technologies to develop revolutionary new treatments for people with motor neurone disease. This is a high risk, but potentially very high return, initiative that could make a dramatic impact on the course of this dreadful disease.”

Talking.........Business with George F. White

June 2018

Tim Michie is a Senior Rural Surveyor at land, property and business consultancy, George F. White. Tim has been involved in the rural sector for most of his life; he joined George F. White as a graduate in 2011 and has recently been appointed as a senior member at the firm. GIS Mapping: How it can help improve your farm business Technological developments have really helped to improve efficiency across the UK agriculture sector and make the most of resources at a time where cashflow is stretched, and long-term forecasting is challenging. A Geographic Information System (GIS), is designed to store, analyse, manage, and present a variety of geo-spatial data. It is a technology used across many industries including farming, to increase productivity, improve decisionmaking and reduce costs. For the farming industry, GIS technology has many benefits that can take guesswork out of production and enable farmers to manage their land much more effectively and, critically, get the most out of it to increase profits and support growth. One huge advantage that GIS technology provides to farmers is that it enables them to farm very precisely. For example, every field is different and the levels of nitrogen, seed spread, amount of fertiliser, and yields can vary greatly. With GIS mapping, you can interweave datasets such as nitrate vulnerable zones, drainage pathways, fertiliser, crop and weed plans together to develop a strategic plan that can monitor and manage the health of your fields, the strength of your crops, and how best to treat them. This is because the technology can map these details and create findings that inform farmers about differences in soil types, weather impacts such as too much or too little sunlight, and drainage levels, to maximise crop production. Another big plus point is that you can view all of this information on your phone. So, if you’re out in the field drilling and need to check where, for example, your specific Countryside Stewardship Options are, so that you know where to drill to avoid any infringement of Natural England regulations and consequential penalties, you can do so, instantly. To give another example, if a spray contractor is coming out to spray your crops, you can refer the GIS data across to quickly identify boundaries, saving time and money in the prevention of over-spraying. The benefits of using GIS technology are wide ranging and provide a good opportunity to help improve the overall function of a farm business. We are talking to farmers now about the role it plays in farming and how it can help them ensure their land and crops are as healthy as possible, to maximise output that can help increase their bottom line. With GIS, you have the ability to diagnose and classify any issues or problems and carry out interpretation, analysis and predictions, which can help farmers work smarter and run their business better. For more details on GIS mapping and how it can work for your farm business, please contact Tim Michie on timmichie@georgefwhite.co.uk or 01665 511 992.
