Talking......... Organic

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. We had a couple of open days at the end of May, one with AHDB Beef and Lamb on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in beef and the other with Dovecote Park. Both were good, interactive days with excellent speakers and good discussions covering protein forages, cattle, soil, herd health and fertility and everything in between. A great couple of days and thank you to everyone who made the trip to join us. We finished calving the day of the AHDB talk with the calving done in 51 days. Silage was ready to cut the last day in May when we had an open day with Dovecote Park. It has rained ever since... farming ! Now the weather has settled into its early summer routine of a day of sun, a day of rain, which mean that clipping, silage and many other jobs will all need to be done at the same time once a more settles period arrives. Lambs are being dosed for nematodirus and are receiving a selenium and cobalt drench. Bulling heifers continue to go through their vaccination programme. The hens are doing well, with more eggs each day and we are now settling into a routine and getting to know the system and each other better (that’s the hens and us, not Claire and I!) We have some local ladies helping us out on a part time basis, which is a great help and has enabled us to actually start to see the wood for the trees. I am really pleased with our new hen house and the ability to have total control over the ventilation and lighting as well as measuring the feed and water intake which means we can deliver the highest welfare for our birds. Sainsburys have been to visit our hens, as well as a number of farmers coming to see our house and the design of it, with positive feedback all round. We are actively looking at three more farm diversification projects, with some early costings taking place and trying to work out how everything would fit together. We have recently had our cousins visiting us from New Zealand. Two brothers who farm separate holdings, yet share a boundary and luckily also share machinery. One brother has sheep and dairy grazing heifers on contract, the other has sheep, dairy heifers and has now diversified Red Lumps up to 20kg made accessible into milking goats with 650 does being milked twice a day. All the year round with clean water. milk is processed for baby formula. It’s that easy, mother nature’s natural organic dispensary They arrived with us the day of the election results and have had to put up with us talking about the various parties, their failings and the challenges • Self-regulating • 84 full spectrum minerals • that lie ahead for us with Brexit. Both of them have farmed through the • 100% Natural • Certified organic • No additives • removal of their subsidies in 1984 and the complete restructuring of the Nationwide delivery agricultural system in New Zealand. There is no doubt that it was very Highly cost effective animal health and welfare challenging, yet you get the impression that the governments and banks were supportive of those farms and the level of reliance on subsidy was www.seamillsalt.com significantly lower than ours in certain sectors. THINGS ARE LOOKING UP

Wendy writes

Yesterday I had an oil change. The tonic it gives when the sludge is removed from my sump is a feeling I find hard to put into words. Today he bought a new electric powered grease gun that will allow Tony to lubricate my joints that stiffen up so quickly at my age. He has spoken to Chris of Border Coatings, accepted his quote and now it is just a question of waiting for a bed to come free and I can go in. The Cousin Mati problem is my diary is constantly filling up with appointments and I hate letting people down so please lda don’t be too disappointed if I am not looking my best at the Border Union Show. I see he has cajoled another member of the family into becoming a regular contributor. Will Howe, his nephew, having served time as a Farmers Weekly writer can be found on page 48. Out of the blue I received correspondence below from a distant Dear Cousin Wendy, Kent relative. You never know when your past may catch up with you. At last I have found a way of contacting you. I am sure that you are my long lost cousin. I have been looking for you for a long time, but as I have been kept shut in a barn for over 20 years it has been quite difficult. He promises that it won't happen again. I have read how badly treated you are, but at least you get out and about. Recently he took me for a drive around a field and had some photos taken, some of which I managed to get hold of to send to you. As you can see I have been sadly neglected. He is always promising but nothing seems to happen. I am sure that we should get together to form a charity to stop the abuse of the likes of us old AECs. It has to stop. Looking forward to a brighter future, your old Cousin Matilda Sandystones My Dear Matilda, Sales & Service of HM Trailers Evadne, other, grandm al matern I had given you up for dead years ago. Talking......... Arable

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Just because I’ve laid out all my irrigation pipes and had everything up and running, I can’t be held responsible for the wet weather! As of today (11/6/17) we have had 70mm of rain in the past week so we are now well set up and will be able to park the irrigators for a week or so. Surprisingly, given the intensity of the showers at times, there are only a few small areas of crop lying flat - mostly rye which is under trees. I think this is mainly down to the wheat and spring oats being very thin. The wheat seems to have lost a lot of tillers and the spring oats didn’t have them to start with. All down to the dry spell. How this will affect the yield is largely unknown at this point. The wheat ears all look longer than average, and maybe a thinner oat crop will give a better bushel weight, but the Rye ear weighbridge will tell the final story. Unfortunately, as always, with the good comes the bad. The rain has turned the potato fields to mush and is preventing us getting on with blight sprays but with a better forecast for the next few days we should get back to spraying soon. It is certainly too early to be losing control of the disease, so hopefully a return to drier weather and a reduced need for irrigation (which would increase the humidity in the crop) will allow us to get on top of the job. It is largely the same story with cereal spraying. The wheat wasn’t far enough on before the rain to apply a well timed ear spray against fusarium. However, we were luckier with the potatoes, as there was a dry Oats on a gravelly Barley after 2 days patch evening that allowed us to keep going until midnight and get the furthest on fields treated. Again, as with the Applying ear spray potatoes, we should get the rest treated early this next week. It is one of the most important sprays of the year as a poor application can soon result in increased ear disease and reduced bushel weights, yield and price. As for the rest of the crops, the final few beet plants have emerged in cloddy areas of one field. Paradoxically, the best beet is in the lightest fields where good seed to soil contact has given great growing conditions. Finally we have finished our spring drilling programme with the last field of spring barley Stripey barley after going in on the 23rd of May. It is amazing how quickly the crops emerge at this time of year Barley after carrots carrots and they were rowed up in 5 days. Given that someone was telling me his barley took 6 weeks to emerge maybe us laggards aren’t too bad after all.

Jessica Clark is a Senior Rural Practice Chartered Surveyor for George F White based in their Duns and Alnwick offices. She specialises in subsidy and grant applications, strategic business management, valuation and the sale and purchase of rural property in both England and Scotland. Utility company access – what are your rights? Many property occupiers will have some form of utility apparatus crossing their land, be it pylons, electric/BT poles, gas and water pipes. The rights granted to these companies (many of whom now seem to be owned by foreign investment companies) are covered by many old draconian acts, dating back many years (1800’s in the case of network rail for instance) and grant certain rights to install, maintain and repair apparatus. We have seen a sudden increase in new schemes being instigated mostly looking at renewing existing lines or replacing equipment; particularly the electric board and BT with the start of fibre optic rollout. It’s really important that you as a land occupier know your rights and what the utility company can or can’t do. We find that in most circumstances, the operators use subcontractors who think they can just go on the land, do what they like, when they like and cause whatever damage they like. The starting point is to look at the acts that grant the statutory powers. Is there a wayleave, easement or servitude and does that restrict them to certain rights, such as access or equipment? We have recently been involved with a scheme where the utility company needed to replace the foundations on a pylon; the easement allowed them to replace but not create a new bigger foundation; this technical issue resulted in renegotiating a new agreement and crystallising a large claim for injurious affection. Many are also so badly planned that the landowner is the last person they speak to; in which case has the correct notice for entry been served or do they need to come in early? Can they install a compound or welfare site? Whilst many would say they can do all this, in most circumstances we find they can’t and that creates a negotiating position. You must be really careful about what you allow them to do. So for example, if they travelling between 2 farms are you ensuring that they are washing down to prevent spread of livestock diseases or Black Grass seeds? Have they provided security for equipment left on site – we had one case where a pole rolled onto a sheep and killed it overnight! In terms of compensation, the statutory position is to put you into a position that you would have been had the works not occurred. It is vital that you keep a record of all the time that you spend or your increased disturbance as a result of the works. Particularly if it’s a major pylon restring or pipeline, you will be amazed at what additional time is spent by you during the scheme and trying to remember the detail at the end is always impossible. So keep a record daily as you go on - it then becomes an unarguable point. LIVESTOCK CONTAINER FOR SALE Finally, it impacts on any property occupier, whether you are a householder with works in the garden, farmer or commercial property owner - if they are taking entry under statutory powers 26 feet long, folding alloy deck make sure you are fully compensated for your losses. Talking........New Zealand

Brassicas/Grass (+most other seeds) direct into burnt off grass/stubbles

Tel Gavin Tait: 07773

764 794 for more info

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. I thought I should write some serious farming stuff in this article so here goes. First up the dairy farm: The cows are now dried off and safely up at their new winter resort Motuiti, but it has been a poor season. As a legacy of really poor management last season, the cows went into this season with a high level of buggered udders. Tim, the manager culled these cows post calving, which left Big Jase short of cows in the milking herd. Big Jase went out and bought a mob of underfed 1st calving heifers to replace the culled cows which meant that with his own heifers the herd was 30% 1st calving heifers. Despite a great grass growing year, good on farm management, well fed cows and no further cock-ups, we have got nowhere near our targeted milk production. This is a pity. The milk price has lifted to pretty good levels, I have to pay for the new wintering resort I bought for the cows and at our age one is never sure how many more seasons we might enjoy to get it right. We had a pretty forthright discussion with Big Jase and we hope this next season will be a boomer. He is on notice. By contrast things on the cropping farms are good. A pretty reasonable harvest, some minuscule firming of prices, good lamb prospects for the spring market and all the wheat in and up, suggest things are ok. We have had to resow a 20ha block of grass seed that was drowned out/eaten by slugs/soil capped/poor seed vigour, but that seems like a minor hiccup. Sowing grass on the 1st of June is a novelty but works for the new world record holder for a wheat Unloading cows at Motuiti into the crop so it may work for us. The mills are holding the wheat price down, but domestic demand for feed wheat new yards may push the price over the milling prices which means that for the following year prices should lift substantially across the board. The lamb thing looks promising as well. I was a little gloomy when we had to pay huge money to buy store lambs in the autumn but the meat processors are short of animals and are talking up the market come spring. We have also lined up with a North Island processor that sends lambs to the US market where there are no All types of Agricultural Fencing, Garden Fencing and Decking weight restrictions so we can take lambs to heavier weights and increase our per head margin. A & E Brown, Byrewalls, Gordon, Berwickshire TD3 6JU That is probably enough serious farming stuff. The Boss is trying Contact: Andrew 07725 583737 to suggest I pack a bag. Our plane to Europe leaves soon. I’d better Euan 07774 004622 Evenings 01573 410260 get going.

A Heatpump system manages a revolutionary Grain Drying process. The heatpump is located in a customised plant room that is manufactured in our workshop and delivered to site ready to use. A bespoke controller can operate the grain dryer via a cloud based system enabling Calibrate to monitor all aspects of the process and tariff generation meters online.

This Heatpump can heat more than one application at a time, for example:

Grain Dryer

Farm House

Cottage

A revolutionary, patent pending Grain Drying system will save Hulam Farm £36,000* per year. “I have dealt with Calibrate for a number of years now and this is the second big project I have undertaken; paybacks from the initial project have been 4 years rather than the forecasted 6.5 years. I like these guys, they are very clever, get the job done – could highly recommend them for large scale projects.” Michael Allan Hulam Farm

The Heatpump Grain Drying solution is very flexible, it can be bolted on to an existing Grain Dryer or can be purchased as a complete solution and it uses a ‘cool only’ function at the end of the cycle to ensure the grain is at any temperature you require prior to storage.

This system is OFGEM approved at the highest possible tariff of

9.09p per kW hr.

On Our Farm

June 13th 2017

What an extraordinary position we find ourselves in, the person who won is treated as a loser, the one who came second thinks he’s won, third place goes to someone who performed much worse than the previous race but still makes out they did better. I have been racking my brains to think of an agricultural analogy, the best I can come up with in an arable situation is to sow a crop of hybrid wheat into a perfect seedbed on grade 1 soil in mid September. Every seed germinates, the potential looks a world record crop and so advice is taken on what nutrients the crop might need through the growing season. The only activity that was missed out was to roll the field but that does not matter, the drill had individual press wheels behind each coulter, slugs are not a problem and neither are stones. And then for some inexplicable reason with a very wet Catcher in the rye forecast and far from ideal conditions you decide to get the rolls out. Not only does the crop suffer with compaction from the wheelings but the subsequent torrential downpours cause the soil to cap. And the potential 17tonne/ha crop of wheat ends up just breaking even at 8 tonnes. What idiot would go rolling when it could only do harm despite being taught that rolling is something has to be done. Still not quite as good as the decision taken by the PM in an attempt to boost her position. The person who really must take the credit is our First Minister, she single handledly enabled twelve candidates from the party she abhors to win seats at Westminster over the SNP. What an own goal! At last we have had rain, the spring barley has grown and filled out the gaps, whether there are sufficient tillers to make a decent crop remains to be seen. I have counted three on most plants and up to five, at least I have used a robust seed rate which will help give a good number of ears. Generally across all crops the potential looks promising, the rape had a long flowering in ideal conditions, winter barley grew away from the March yellows although nitrogen sat there for a long time with insufficient moisture to BOX PROFILE, FIBRE allow the crop to take it so there is a risk of high nitrogen in theCEMENT, CORRUGATED, Agricultural Salt COMPOSITE malting barley. Talking......... From the South

Hugo Lee is farm manager at Whitsbury Farm and Stud near Fordingbridge in Hampshire. The soils are predominantly chalk downland with some clay cap. Cropping covers 1500 acres and includes wheat, barley, oilseed rape, peas and poppies. 60 cattle are finished annually and 250 ewe lambs are sold every September. The farm is also home to the famous Whitsbury Manor Stud and Whitsbury racing stables. What a difference a month makes and I still can’t quite believe how well crops have recovered from such a dry spring! The drought finally came to an end in the last week of May and the crops have never looked back since. The wheats are looking very clean and have just received their T3 ear wash spray. If we have good weather during grain fill we should be set for a good yield. The oilseed rape is very slowly starting to turn colour but fingers crossed it will stay green for a while longer yet. The spring barley has flown through its growth stages and is also looking very clean. However the dry spring has resulted in it losing a couple of tillers which will obviously have an impact on yield. The peas are looking ok and starting to set their first pods. Unfortunately the linseed has continued to struggle and I fear it will be a very disappointing crop this year. We made the most of two good dry spells at the start of June and got all of our silage and haylage bailed. I was really pleased with the yield especially considering how dry it had been. The quality was also very good and the most pleasing thing of all was that we got the last bail wrapped just as the heavens opened. The lads on the farm were very impressed by my timing, more luck than judgement but I would never tell them that! The last of the wheat went last week and we have already started the annual grain store maintenance programme. This year we have had to make some changes to our storage due to the fact we are no longer growing poppies. We have extended a conveyor so that we can now fill the poppy drying floor straight from the drier and have upgraded the conveyor over the barley bins. The previous conveyor was very old, ran at 5t/hr and it was causing a serious bottleneck during harvest. The new one is 30t/hr and has been fitted Silage making in house by Bob and Paul who have done an incredible job fitting it in very cramp, hot, dusty conditions. I have entered the Hampshire Farmers competition again this year and I am really looking forward to showing the judges around the farm. The competition is great because it makes you step back and really analyse your business. Unfortunately our ongoing battle with hare coursers, fly tippers etc continues. Only last night the gallops were driven all over by hare coursers and they also drove through the pea fields which surround the gallops and have made a serious mess. In a separate incident last night a car was dumped on the road to the gallops complete with its two remaining wheels! Despite the best efforts of the police and everyone on the farm I fear we are fighting a losing battle unless the punishment for these crimes become a lot harsher. Fly tipping on the gallops 42

Alnwick Properties Attention all landlords and estate mangers in England From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Government’s minimum energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. Scotland is still looking at this matter. If domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F, G, H or worse then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to it’s poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete draft EPC reports for your properties now so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for England and the Scottish Borders.

NEW!

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are Fresh from predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, Farmers Week winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow; and he also manages a ly contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. In farming, as in life, complacency has a nasty way of coming back to bite you on the behind. I spent last autumn smugly watching my neighbours tearing around with cultivators safe in the knowledge that my cover crops were sown and other than a few hundred acres of winter wheat to drill, my work was done till the Spring. Blackgrass control was good in the previous crop so I didn’t even have to worry about that. Oh dear! The cover crops and amounts of chopped straw have led to a slug infestation of biblical proportions, and having dug more soil pits than a Somerset bred badger, I can inform you they have contributed absolutely diddley-squat in terms of soil improvement. The chopped straw left on the surface is entirely the right thing to do for soil biology, but unfortunately what it has done is harbour slugs and prevent the chemicals from reaching the blackgrass. Fortunately the mini drought we entered saved mass losses from the gastropods and everything established nicely. I looked around at patchy emergence from my more conventional neighbour’s spring crops; cue smug feeling number 2! The second sensation on my backside was less of a bite, more of a mauling. During the cold and dry the crop looked great. Then a deluge of 60mm in a few days turned the barley yellow and it has not really physically grown since despite flying through the growth stages. Despite advisors telling me what great shape the soil is in here, the crops are telling me otherwise and it is with a heavy heart that some steel at depth will be added to the rotation this year, coupled with a reintroduction of oilseed rape. All of the above is linked to how I ended up writing this article. The answer to all my agricultural problems is………… cattle. I bale the straw for cattle and I have less slugs and an easier route to making blackgrass grow, I can grow grass/rye for silage, instead of a very unprofitable managed fallow, and I should get no blackgrass seed return for a year. Perfect! So I phoned up the largest livestock farmer in 2 NEW the family for some advice. Well Guy is enthusiastic about everything, and thinks this is a brilliant McConnel SR460 idea. What started out as a few cattle in a shed is slowly morphing into toppers something far larger with a shed to suit but the spreadsheet says it works. My only reservation is that if our politicians can make such a Horlicks £160 per day out of elections and referendums, then how on earth are they going to be able to negotiate a trade deal to benefit the British agriculture? • 01835 830507• 07703 571291•

Blinkbonny Kwik Mix

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

Talking......... Livestock

Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. ‘A quick blow dry and in it went’- is the first cut silage all summed up as we got started in good time in the best crops and had to get them raked up and in before it became too dry and then it began to drag as the rain intervened and the crops got bigger. We eventually got finished up by cutting on a windy evening and lifting the next day before the rain. This has left the silo fuller than normal with the last layer more stemmy than I would have liked but we are basically seepage free which is important. The delay has also allowed fertilizer prices to reduce a little which is a plus. If it is sowed tomorrow and the slurry out that will be the tanks empty for another year. I would like a pig farm to be local to avail of some slurry but there is nobody close enough to be practical. A recent TB check test is leaving us clear which is great as the rest of summer grazing can be carried out without that annoying interruption. The crushes are designed for minimal stress for cow and operator as long as testing is carried out at milking time but this couldn’t be done on the first day and a notable difference was evident and we went back to plan A for the reading. Another few days should see grazing back on track and allow more calves to be turned out. On the arable side of things, we have the two extremes with winter crop barely able to stand and a poor field of spring crop barely able to survive. So with everything possible thrown at it, it is time to be thankful that all the eggs aren’t in the one basket. With a good ¾ of cows back in calf, I hope, we are well pleased with how South Road – Belford the cows are yielding at around 27 litres. They have remained at nearly peak yield for the longest period of time for a few years but whenever July (01668) 213 433 comes a notable reduction in yield will happen at any small variable in Suppliers of Quality Assured either grazing quality or the weather. This in turn will suit as the autumn calvers will be preparing to dry off in early August anyway. READY MIXED CONCRETE The word ”complacency” has been rumbling around in my head, as it Steven Birdsall (01668) 213 733 Mobile: 07970 112761 seems to be the politicians on both sides of the water that have suffered from being complacent, as they have basically taken their eye off their GILBERT BIRDSALL job and expect the voters not to notice, never mind the fact that election BUILDING & CIVIL ENGINEERING after election is wasting money. I know one thing for sure, if any of us Suppliers of Quarry Materials, JCB Hire, Drives, Agricultural Buildings, etc. were to run our businesses with such instability we wouldn’t last long!!

NOW IN SCOTLAND EVENING SEMINAR On Wednesday the 31st of May H&H Land and Property held its first evening seminar aiming to keep farmers up to date on topics that could impact their farming businesses. Murray Soutar of Gillespie Macandrew LLP delivered an agricultural law update while Angus Brown of Registers of Scotland discussed the importance of voluntary pre-registration of title deeds. The evening was brought to a close by Louise Forsyth of Forsyths Butcher & Bakers who provided an insight into the journey from field to plate through the eyes of a family run retail butcher. H&H Land and Property plan to host another informative evening in the autumn and would like to give farmers the chance to set the agenda. If you have any topics that you would like to see discussed on the night please let us know.
