The Cargills are based in Laurencekirk, Aberdeen. This Heat / Chill system was designed to Heat the daffodil drying shed, workshop and the grading shed. There was also a Chilled coil to dehumidify the daffodils, and Chill down the potato store. It was agreed that Calibrate’s 1mW Heatpump Heat / Chill system was the perfect solution for their existing technology and a retrofit could be organised. The by-product of the Heatpump’s Heating cycle is Chilling. This is used to Chill the daffodils or potatoes, something that was previously a costly process is now being done for free. The Results The first system of its kind to dry daffodil bulbs this Heat / Chill system has outstanding results: • A 5 year pay back • Total energy efficiency of 725% • 1°c at 325% Chilling efficiency The 1mW system is fully monitored, has an automated modulation system with variable speed water pumps and export management to operate the variable stages of the Heatpump. The automated system can step up or down to suit the available free power generated by the existing solar technology. A bespoke Control System remotely manages this system enabling the Cargills to have a ‘hands off’ approach as well as enabling real time tariff generation and power consumption readings.

For an informal chat on what your income could be call:

“Calibrate created an innovative design that reduced fossil fuel costs and streamlined our systems and processes. It is great to see that this design was seen to fruition with great communication, I would happily recommend Calibrate.” Tom Cargill

Visit us at Coldstream Farm Open Day, Laurencekirk, AB30 1BX for complimentary drinks and nibbles where you can see the Heatpump potato storage system in action.

A NEW CABLE AND A FAILED PULL

December 2018 The good news is I have my new cable and it is a joy. I have just pulled a hen shed here and I have never had it move so easily, I think the old cable had a lot of stretch and that was causing me all sorts of issues I was unaware of. The operation of removal and rewinding was reasonably painless, I was in theatre for exactly two hours. I am not accustomed to failure when I go to a job. I expect, as does anyone who knows me, to leave a satisfied customer with a moved tree, a shifted shed, a recovered vehicle even a washed away bridge back on dry land. It was the Friday of the sale at New Mills, he had gone along for a social - (typical! he leaves me at home whilst he see his friends). His telephone rings with a request to winch out an articulated lorry that had got itself stuck up a lane somewhere west of Peebles. Without my enthusiasm I doubt we would have gone as he ummed and arred, spoke to the owners in Ballymena and could not make a decision. We eventually left Sandystones at 2.15, arriving on site at 3.45. The vehicle was well stuck and in a precarious position with a load of concrete panels destined for Easter Harprew. The driver had been given the wrong I tried and tried! postcode and had driven up a narrow track near Wester Harprew. With a drop to a burn on one side, a boggy bank on the other and no turning room at the top, the driver tried to reverse out but overhanging trees and sharp bends made this a difficult manoeuvre. I arrived as dusk was descending and had to get myself to the other side of the lorry to pull from the front. The route was through a farm steading up a track, into a grass field up the hill, into another field and then back onto the track. I drove up the track but could not manage the grass hill, I needed help. We decided to abandon the operation for 1. CARTROT the night and come back in the morning. A tractor was waiting to 2. DWYNE assist me up the hill, I took it very carefully down to the track for fear of slipping. I reversed down to where he was stuck and attached to his 3. RIGATARM towing eye which came off as soon as I started to pull. The threads 4. NOBMICE EVERTRASH had been damaged previously. With perseverance and a strong arm he managed to get it to hold, but as I took the strain and the vehicle 5. PHEDRESH started to move it was obvious the driving wheels were not going to 6. HOPLUG come up the bank but skid along the side. With the trailer following the same route it was going to end up a very expensive mess. At this 7. CORNCARTOT stage I admitted defeat and told him we had better get out of here. Wendy writes

December 8th 2018

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. We’ve had 200mm of rain in November, the wettest since 1952, and we haven’t been able to do much farming. Peas and spring sown barley have been drowned, cow production has dropped and the boss is still trying to hack her way round the lawns to reconquer the wilderness that was her garden. Even the pigs have been sulking. We did get the new house at the winter resort finished, and Blondie and Tom moved in a week before they produced a Bonny grandson. And we managed to take a 5t/ha DM crop of silage off the resort before we sowed it in kale for the cows over winter. November is also the whitebaiting season. Whitebait are the sea run juveniles of our native galaxid fish. (Look it up!)They were a staple diet of the Maori and are considered a favourite delicacy by us kiwis. (Made into fritters using eggs, salt and milk and then fried in butter served Drilling kale at the winter resort with a squeeze of lemon). They are fished by either setting up elaborate nets at the mouths or estuaries of our rivers and hoping the shoals of wee fish will swim into the nets or by standing in the surf with a scoop net and hoping to intercept them as they swim past. Success is determined by the level of dedication you bring to your fishing. Whitebait run on the near full tide and those that get the big hauls are those that fish every high tide regardless of the time of day. The wild and untamed rivers of the West Coast are probably the most favoured rivers to fish, but our East coast rivers can have big runs and the most dedicated fishermen are sometimes rewarded. Cutting silage 4 days before Fishing our local rivers is not for the faint hearted. The rivers are large and powerful and the sea is very dangerous. Most years one or two whitebaiters will be knocked down by the surf and washed out to sea, only some are rescued. Those that aren’t usually get washed ashore on the southern coast of Banks peninsula a week or so later. My grandmother was an intrepid and slightly eccentric fisherman. In gentler times if invited to join my grandfather on his verandah for an evening beer, whitebait fritters would always be produced before you could finish your first glass. She was still trying to catch whitebait from the surf well into her 70’s. My grandfather felt he had to go down to keep an eye on her; she would get knocked down; he would stagger into the surf to rescue her, he’d get knocked over and so all the other fishermen would rush in to save them both. Eventually they persuaded her to let them catch the whitebait for her. She never ran out of whitebait. Her other favourite past time was catching mice for bait for trout fishing. She kept her dead mice on a tray in her deep freeze next to the ice cream. This elicited the odd scream from guests who were directed to the deep freeze for their favourite pudding. Now Gavin, the mechanic, who is a West Coaster, and goes over to the “Coast” every year for his whitebait fix, came back from this year’s adventure to say he had met an Indian fella who was keen to trade whitebait for Akaunui pork. The terms of trade are being negotiated needless to say I think the wily Indian is likely to get the better of the enthusiastic mechanic, but I do have the beer chilling.

On Our Farm

December 11th 2018

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 6000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant poults are raised. 2018 will certainly live in the memory for a very long time. It was our first year at Sandystones and what a year it has been! The winter seemed like it was never going to end as we were hit by the Beast from the East. The lowest point was early March when we were trying to move and wash down a hen shed in conditions more akin to the North Pole than the Scottish Borders. Even getting to the shed became a major challenge as we had to battle our way through 4ft snowdrifts. As the winter went on and on forage supplies around the country became seriously short and straw was trading at well over £100/t. Sheep farms suffered terrible losses at lambing due to the horrendous weather and cattle farmers where having to cull cows because they had completely run out of feedstock. At the end of April winter finally came to an end we skipped straight into summer with one of the longest, hottest, driest periods the country has ever experienced. Crops which were about a month behind, raced through their growth stages and harvest was over in record time with hardly anything needing to be dried. Yields were around average except for spring barley which performed incredibly well despite being drilled three weeks later than normal and cut two weeks earlier. The drought across Europe resulted in a big increase in grain prices with wheat trading at £200/t at one point and spring malting barley at £220/t. Livestock farmers who had battled through one of the worst winters/springs in living memory then had to cope with drought, poor silage yields and hugely inflated concentrate and bedding costs. Thankfully the arrival of Posy, our youngest, was a silver lining at least! As Christmas rapidly approaches we are desperately trying to get everything done before everyone goes away on a well-deserved holiday. We have just depleted one of our hen sheds which will be fully washed down, disinfected and pulled onto a new site ready for the pullets’ arrival in the New Year. In our latest shed the birds have never looked better as they have fantastic feather cover and have been growing really well. However, we are experiencing some teething problems, the birds have come into lay much earlier than normal and as a consequence we are having some issues with them laying eggs on the slats rather than in the nest boxes. Just as you think you have We will provide the complete cracked it another problem arises, the joys of dealing with livestock! service for all your steel framed I managed to get away from the farm for a couple of days last month. From 1st January 2019 the practice of burning most types of agricultural waste on farms, including farm plastics will come to an end in Scotland. Compliance with this is nonnegotiable and will be strictly enforced by SEPA. All farmers and land managers should now seek to have arrangements in place to dispose of waste legally. The most practical steps you can take are to: • Recycle your waste by engaging with a specialist contractor. Agricultural waste is legally described as ‘commercial waste’. • Recover your waste by other means, e.g. by sending to an authorised energy from waste facility. • As a last resort, dispose of your waste to an authorised landfill. • If a land manager carries anybody's waste other than their own, even if it is from another land manager, then they must be a registered waste carrier (RWC). There is a fee for this, currently £210, and registrations are valid for three years. If you just store your own farm plastics on site prior to collection by another party, such as a recycling company, then you do not need to inform SEPA about this or register. The storage of your plastic on your own land is covered by a non registerable exemption. More information can be found on the SEPA website www.sepa.org.uk 40

When a shelter belt becomes a money belt Timber prices are performing well, which is good news for those who have forestry investments - it’s also opened up a market for farmers to cash in on timber, farming their assets as well as their land. Shelterbelts are a case in point. In the 1970s there were less restrictions and more grants to encourage tree planting - swathes of new woodland appeared. Shelterbelts were also introduced on many farms. Shelterbelts are no longer waste land. Shelterbelts are generally smaller areas of woodland where the size and Iain Kyle access, combined with lower timber prices, meant ten years ago, they had little or no value for harvesting. Trees Forestry Manager planted in 1970s are now 50 years old and with rising timber prices, they are a crop worth cashing in on. Prices have risen for a number of reasons. The weaker Pound against the Euro makes imports more expensive and there is a general increase in UK consumption. Sawmill volumes were up last year by 6% (6.5m tonnes), and wood chip for biomass boilers is also fuelling demand. Ten years ago timber prices meant ‘waste’ wood like chip and brash were left to decay because the cost of extraction exceded its value. Times have changed and it’s now in high demand for biomass boilers, setting baseline timber prices. It’s hardly surprising that we are seeing an increase in the number of landowners in Northern England and Southern Scotland capitalising on their assests by harvesting shelterbelts. Iain Kyle Forestry Manager for Davidson & Robertson said “an acre of forgotten land is now a growing asset and we’re managing the harvesting process for a number farmers who want advice on their best options - both sides of the border.” Top tips when considering planting and harvesting shelterbelts: 1. Access - you must be able to access easily for management and harvesting 2. Assess your shelter belts and understand what’s there to maximise potential - it’s something we’re often asked to do 3. Consider the impact that felling the shelterbelt would have on your farm going forward 4. Remember you need a felling licence before you start Recent sales in North East Cumbria include a larch crop from 2.97 hectares which achieved £25.5K from 622.6 tonnes of timber. If you think you have potential for harvesting or creating woodland, contact Iain Kyle, Forestry Manager at the Davidson & Robertson Berwick office on 01289 543 222 or visit www.drrural.co.uk 42

December 9th 2018

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. With harvest (bar the strawed carrots) finished, thoughts now turn to finalising plans for next year and trying to learn lessons from 2018’s performance. With the past 12 months being a year of extremes it’s hard to say which factors made the most influence on crop performance. The most obvious one is drought, it is clear from cereal results that even a small amount of extra moisture makes a huge difference. Deep, silty soils were still giving good yields compared to gravelly ground. Along with this the spring sown cereals took a real pasting from the lack of moisture, they were sown later than usual so had less rooting and therefore access to less water. At least that’s my theory. The performance of the cereal rye, compared to wheat, also highlighted the advantages of deeper rooting and early season vigour this crop has. On the root crops, irrigation was the key for the potatoes, to enhance both yield and quality. The potatoes yielded about the long term average tonnage, the starkest difference was where 50mm of irrigation was added and returned 5 extra tonnes per acre. This was on a variety that doesn’t suffer from common scab so wouldn’t usually have been irrigated, so it was well worth the extra cost (in this year’s extreme conditions). Moving onto the carrots, the area that has been harvested has performed well, despite being last on the list for irrigation. This crop, along with the energy beet, seems to be able to weather dry conditions and as long as there is moisture at bulking they can still perform. The beet especially seemed to benefit from the sunny conditions, with excellent yields, albeit they were sown on the deepest soils we have this year. So I think you can see already what I need to do, increase the supply of water to the crops! But how to do this; obviously irrigation is one way, albeit expensive. Alternatively I can try to increase the water holding capacity of the soil by increasing soil organic matter. This is a long term aim of mine, which revolves around cover crops and reducing tillage wherever possible. Finally I can grow crops that exploit more of the soil depth to capture more of the available water, this means maximising rooting depth by appropriate cultivation and using more vigorous varieties. But what is appropriate cultivation varies hugely from one grower to another, where we min till we usually do 3 passes including sowing, where we plough there is only two. Which does more damage to the organic matter level? Given that we grow a lot of root crops I feel that the plough still has a place, it loosens the soil to a known depth and if a press is pulled at the same time is reasonably time and fuel efficient. In an ideal world I would have a drill that would work in a plough system as well as direct drilling so I could take advantage of different conditions, but of course everything has a price! You never know, maybe Father Christmas will bring me something in my stocking. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and that we all have a prosperous New Year (Brexit depending)!

December 10th 2018 Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. January 2019 As I have just typed the above date but still yet in December it is unbelievable where the year has went to and indeed how far away we are getting from the millennium. Unfortunately for some people time doesn’t go as quick, as they maybe in pain or bed bound or recently bereaved. So Christmas is one of the many times that these people need to be remembered. Thinking back to the millennium it reminds me how people thought the world wasn’t going to survive financially with technology going to fail but of course we are still here and time goes on and indeed Brexit will be the same if it ever happens. Brexit reminds me of a farmer I know who decided he wouldn’t let Quality Assured dictate to him as how to farm so he gave them their p45 and they continued to beg for him to go back to their scheme. This showed me that they needed him more than he needed them. So likewise Europe needs us more than we need them and indeed I reckon that the deal is poor because leaders have been so used to doing what they were told that they cant think for themselves anymore. Maybe the sponger politicians will soon get their p45! It also would be good to remember that 2019 years ago time hadn’t just begun, it had changed forever as it had changed from BC to AD. So at the end of the day Christmas is Christ Jesus’s birthday and remembering this and indeed his death and resurrection will be better for us all no matter about Brexit . Back on farm it is that challenging month where the days are short and stock can be harder to manage than normal, so precaution is the word at the moment. In order to minimise scour, pneumonia or mastitis for example we strive to keep stock on a dry bed with either good air flow or a natural feed additive to help get through the month into more “open”, longer days. Finishing bullocks are continuing to please me as a couple of black and whites graded R’s this week with a good weight at 2 years old. First cut silage and wholecrop barley reseed mix is very pleasing to the nose and seems to be putting the milk in the tank. The cows could be a fraction low on energy as a few repeat not served heats have been missed this week. Therefore a lot of stale cows will be dried off this week the bulk tank protein result will be more reflective of the fresh calvers energy status and the TMR can be adjusted to suit. On Thursday coming it is the Royal Ulster Winter fair, so although I have to help a neighbour with a TB test in the morning I am looking forward to the day out and to see what new AI bulls could be used when AI starts soon. Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New year to you all.

December 12th 2018

I have to confess to being addicted to the Brexit shenanigans. I don’t know why because it is the most frustrating process one could ever imagine to witness and yet it is so unpredictable that it holds a fascination all of its own. From the moment the referendum went in favour of Leave I have felt that it required a Coalition Government to get the necessary legislation onto the Statute book. And so I think this has proved to be the case, a fundamental decision as important as this should not be subject to party politics primarily because the choice to leave was Guy Lee made by voters from every sort of background with loyalties to many political parties. The result is we are in an unholy mess with our representatives in Parliament all holding strong and different views but none with a consensus. In years to come we will look back on 2018 and hopefully wonder what all the fuss was about but right now it is impossible to see where we might end up. I just hope we do not have another referendum or we will be subject to all the same old arguments we heard thirty months ago and I don’t believe any of us will be any the wiser just more bored and fed up with politics and politicians than we already are. It is now a year since Hugo and Jess moved to Sandystones, and the day to day responsibility of running the business moved down a generation. For me it has been a very happy experience, and I trust Hugo would have the same feeling. It is not easy suddenly changing direction but I have to say we get on very well. He always asks me what I think, and I never feel out of the loop. We were given an enormous amount of confidence in making the process as smooth as possible by our accountants who specialize in succession planning, as it is really important, I think, to involve the whole family from the beginning so there is no second guessing how the handover is going to work in practical terms. How lucky we are to have three grandchildren living 200 yards away - if only the three more in London and one in Dar es Salaam lived closer. Back to the here and now, I have never known the prime beef trade so sticky. Usually the run up to Christmas involves a higher kill number and no waiting times in moving animals off farm. This autumn there have been a number of factors that have combined to put pressure on the market. Demand has been hit by the news reporting of the climate change conference in Poland and the one sided story put out of the contributions of ruminants to greenhouse gas emissions but no word of the positive sides of grass acting as a carbon sink. This coupled with an excessive number of cows being culled, a constantly evolving change in eating habits and the price point of beef compared to other food choices has resulted in a reduced requirement from the market. I have to congratulate the organisers of Agriscot, it was an excellent show with a good attendance and a record number of stands. We made a number of buying decisions as we were able to research the options and make informed choices. For our benchmarking group it was a great day with Angus and Niall Jeffrey being named as Scottish Beef Producer of the Year; as a finisher of 120 of their Angus cattle we can vouch for the quality of their stock. Congratulations must also go to son Hugo who came first in the barley section of the YEN competition, he has achieved more in twelve months that his old man has done in 30 years! Happy Christmas and New Year to all, with no predictions as to what the future might look like! 48

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. We also supply all grades of hardcore and crushed rock products at

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. We are nervously looking at silage pits and how much is in them. Praying, even now at the beginning of December for a mild winter and an early spring. Feed costs are up as we are having to feed some concentrate to try and make the forage stocks go further. Fat Lambs are grazing the Brassicas, which did suffer from the drought, but are a welcome feed at this time of year. Ewes and tups are spread over the permanent pasture and all the grass/clover silage fields have been shut up in preparation for the spring and lambing. At the turn of the year more fields will be shut up for turnout and lambing. I think I have said before that ideally all the stock would go to another planet for January, February and March, but the reality down on the farm is very different. This is ultimately where the costs come in, feeding, bedding and housing of livestock for both ours and the livestock’s welfare. We had our TB test and reading the other week. A clean and clear herd which is fantastic. It is a huge effort getting all the cattle through the crush twice in one week. I cannot imagine how it would be to get a positive result and how that would impact on our business. We must never underestimate the value of being in a TB free area. A few weeks ago the rain arrived, and to be fair we haven’t seen a great deal of rain over the last few months. Well this coincided nicely with the commencement of the groundworks of the new layers building. Claire was a little concerned that we were building a new swimming pool at one point. We have had to increase the quantity and quality of stone going in and with the forecast showing three good, cold, and importantly dry days ahead of us, we can push on and get the groundworks finished. It’s quite a tight schedule with the foundations getting poured next week and steel going up immediately after Christmas. D-Day has finally arrived on getting a deal on our withdrawal from the EU. I hope that party politics can be put to one side to have an orderly Brexit that maintains tariff free frictionless trade with our neighbours and largest trading partners. After a number of persuasive phone calls and a good bit of thinking I have stood and been elected as Northumberland’s County Chairman for the NFU from the spring of 2019. This could well be one of the most important periods of time for British Farmers and their families, moving from the stability of the Common agricultural Policy to the new domestic agricultural policy. Please get in touch with your views and concerns of how you see farming policy going forward so I can properly represent Northumberland’s farmers both within the North East and Nationally. Finally, and importantly, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May all your stock be healthy and content, your machines work beautifully and you find time to relax and enjoy the festive cheer. That’s what I’m hoping for!

Talking........from Lincolnshire

December 10th 2018

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

Finally I have bought a combine (is that a collective sigh of relief I can hear?). The head scratching can now cease for another few years and I can relax safe in the knowledge I now have the largest combine in the parish. If that is not a barometer of success by which all my neighbours can judge me I don’t know what is. Disappointingly there will be two brand new combines locally as well, but mine will still be the biggest and therefore allow me to retain my crown… I finished drilling my wheat on the 9th November in less than optimal conditions, with the soil sticking to everything it could. That said it has emerged well except for where I used 500kg of seed from last year. It is particularly noticeable as I drill in lands but hopefully it will catch up. It will certainly get tongues wagging locally.

Within minutes of the drill being cleaned down I got a phone call from a friend whose Who thought using last years seed was a good idea? disc drill could not cope with the conditions. So off I went like the 4th emergency service and it was going so well until it started raining. Nick and I took the decision that the cleats of the tractor had been full all day, the drill was both putting the seed in the ground and covering it; so carry on. There is nothing more dispiriting than drilling wheat with the windscreen wipers on flat out, the heaters on and in fields you don’t know safe in the knowledge that this will be the last chance you get. Well we got finished so fingers crossed it grows.

Oilseed rape opening up ready for Kerb application

With a backlog of yard work mounting up I have got some part-time help a day or two a week. Having made a conscious decision to buy large second-hand machinery, some of it now needs some TLC. Just routine washing and servicing takes time, and then the drill needs some major remedial work. Luckily being a Canadian design all of the pivot points have replaceable bushes and nylon wear plates which should allow them to be returned to “as new” condition which is certainly a more “Brexit friendly” proposition than the European model of throwing it away and then buying new again.

By the time you read this we as a country could be under new leadership, Santa will be on his way, and Scotland will be favourites for the World Cup in Japan. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
