January 7th 2018 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. Unfortunately the golden summer weather has lapsed and we are back into a more normal weather pattern of sun then wind then rain. Earlier in the year it would have been welcome but we are now running up to the start of harvest and a bit of drought makes for a much easier run. Any hope that the dry would lower store lamb prices were short lived. The whole country has had rain and it is now a seller’s market. One of the by-products of the wet winter has been a great breeding season for our Neochanna Burrowsis (Canterbury mudfish). These fish are critically endangered and are rated as one of the world’s rarest freshwater fish species. Apparently we have one of the last remaining habitats for this species and I have been working over the years to enhance this wetland area and improve the habitat. It looks like it is working. We have seen juveniles all the way up and down our wetland system; and on setting traps to count the fish, we have caught record numbers. SERVICES The fish are rare for 2 reasons. UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Wendy writes

What an improvement, the atmosphere from where I am parked has changed dramatically. Listening to that grumpy old man barking instructions to whoever got in his way has changed to courteous dialogue. With chat about who won the football last night, how much has been paid for some transfer or another. It is incredible how two supposed mangers could be so different in style. I welcome the latter but fear I am still controlled by the former. So what does 2018 hold for me? I have nothing much planned out of the ordinary and the only excitement I can wish for is the unexpected. Things just don’t get stuck like they used to. Tracked machines, larger tyres, four wheel drive, improved drainage maintenance have all denied me the opportunity to carry out the recovery work I thrive on. I still have the regular hen sheds to pull and I am thrilled to be appointed official mover for the twelve organic egg laying houses at Gosford Estate, Longniddry.

Poor old Big Red

I have word that he has got himself a job as chauffeur for his niece’s wedding in August. He is to drive the bride and her father from Benrig to Melrose and then the bride and groom back to St Boswells. Apparently he wasn’t asked to do this role, he suggested that he would be the most suitable. Could I politely invite the bride to ask me first for a reference on his driving ability, I think she might be looking for someone else if she had.

The new farm manager has just sent me this very sad photograph of my beloved Big Red languishing in a yard at Charlesfield Industrial Estate. I am devasted and will do all I can in my power to get him back down here. At the last resort I could winch him to Sandystones, it might take some time but I think it will be worth the effort. Mr Gussett are you reading this??

Should You Consider Pension Contributions? Pensions have long been seen as a tax-efficient form of investment. The contributions that you pay into your pension will benefit from tax relief, and aren’t subject to tax while they’re invested in your pension pot. On retirement 25% of your fund can be withdrawn tax free. Tax will only be payable on the remaining 75% when it is withdrawn. If you are currently a Higher Rate taxpayer there could be a real tax saving by paying a pension contribution as you are likely to receive 40% tax relief. On retirement your income may be lower and the tax payable on the pension benefits could be at a lower rate. In recent years the rules governing pensions have changed allowing benefits to be withdrawn in a more flexible manner. This has made contributing to a pension more attractive. Salary Sacrifice is becoming more popular as employees can sacrifice salary, which is subject to Income Tax and National Insurance, in exchange for their employer making an equivalent Income Tax and National Insurance free contribution to a pension scheme. In certain cases pension contributions can also be effective for succession planning as excess annual profits can be extracted from a Company in to a Pension Scheme, in a tax efficient manner. This keeps the Asset / Share value low for any future sale or transfer. Pensions are not appropriate in all cases and there are restrictions on the level of contributions. You should therefore take appropriate professional advice before paying contributions. For further information or to discuss matters in more detail please do not hesitate to contact our Office on 01289 302463.

New Zealand reinvent the wheel, I just try to make it turn a little faster.” As a farmer’s son, farm manager and fencing contractor he admired the way Borders stockmen were always trying to improve what they did with their animals and their attention to detail. Indeed he topped the suckled calf sale at Carlisle with ¾ bred Limousin Calves. “What I did with animals I now try and do with metal and always try to go one step further.” His success in doing that, taking out 15 patents in the process – including an auto telemast, rock spike transfer system, quadshift and hydraulic rockspike swing engagement combination, is

indicated by his haul of gold and silver medals: “These medals are awarded for outstanding innovation, technical achievement and potential to serve the industry. They’re assessed under working conditions across the country.” They’re well worth winning at top shows that are a shop window for his machines. But satisfied customers round the world mean even more: “They make the hard work and long hours worthwhile.” Companies or individuals come to us, they knock on our door. They’ve heard about our brand, or seen a machine in action, and know the exclusive features and quality we can offer.” These customers

from home and abroad come looking for Bryce machines to carry out specialist work, from the Aberdeen bypass, currently the UKs biggest road project where every contractor owns a Bryce, over miles of peat bogs, hard hills and moorland, round thousands of acres of forestry - on dikes in Holland, from the Arctic to New Zealand, Linton to Latvia and Morebattle to Montana. With every demonstration to foreign visitors this year he has achieved a 100% strike rate with orders taken. His top models are the 180 Pro and Vulcan VR 800 which has up to 175 tonnes hitting power. They can drive heavy metal piles and hole punchers, or put in big, heavy straining posts in less than one minute. “That’s fewer strokes, less wear, a faster cycle – and more profit for the operator,” he said. “The strength and quality of our machines is there to see. It’s about designing and making equipment that is as near bombproof as possible. All controls are simple and basic because I’m not into electronics. The last thing an

operator wants is an electronic fault in the middle of a working day stuck on a mountainside or some other remote rural location.” He speaks from experience. As a self-employed contractor who began by putting posts in by hand with an 18lb mell he went on to erect more than one million metres of fencing on his own. He credits the shipbuilders and engineers in his ancestry and his own technical skills with the urge to develop post-driving machines that have revolutionised the basic job and greatly extended the range of work that can be done. When he introduced the first Bryce Suma tractor-mounted machine 20 years ago it quickly became the benchmark in post drivers and ongoing developments have now set the Bryce apart from any other post driver on the market. He also gives huge credit to his wife Jennifer and sons Andrew and Stuart for being part of “a great team.” He said: “Our business has been totally self-funded and is run with dedication and massive commitment. You only reap what you sow.”

Concrete the way you want it!

Blinkbonny Quarry is offering a revolutionary way of mixing concrete, instead of the traditional method of delivering ready mixed concrete Blinkbonny Kwik Mix have placed a batching plant on the back of a lorry. Our batching plants can be set on site to produce any spec of concrete required and it can be controlled to stop to the nearest shovel full, eliminating wasted concrete and unfinished jobs. The machines will carry enough raw material for 6 or 8M3 but can leave concrete in quarter M3 amounts so if the job takes 4.75M3 we will take the rest away and you only pay for what you lay, no “part load charge”. We all know how difficult it can be to estimate so here is the answer, no more ordering 4M3 and then having to order another half M3 to finish the job. Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. That’s it now, we are into a New Year and I am glad for many reasons especially because we are past the shortest day. Indeed the shortest week brought the normal calf rearing problems but I was quite well prepared and spent a while extra morning and evening crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s which minimised any problems spreading. Now as the days stretch the air seems more ‘open’ and working with stock is more pleasant. With straw amounts being tight, we remove the damp areas in the calf bedding in the morning, this automatically saves on bedding and keeps the air fresher. We also invested in group calf hutches and placed them in a high roofed, empty silo and gave the calves plenty of room to roam around with the theory that they can suit themselves without getting wet. Previously they were getting too cold in the bigger air space. The hutches also saves on bedding. One calf refused to lie in the hutches but -5 degrees soon sorted that out! Christmas was busy and the amount eaten was serious and time with family and friends was good, although a few have to be visited yet as we were laiden with the cold for a few days. Previous to that was a day out to the Royal Ulster Winter Fair and it was as enjoyable as ever. With the craic being good it was hard to do any serious business but with most of the hutches on display it made my choice a little easier. For anybody considering coming over for the next Winter Fair I think you wouldn’t be disappointed as Ireland both north and south have much to be proud of with both beast and machine. Indeed with that in mind Brexit shouldn’t be feared as a good product always sells. As I was looking after the children one day I watched a documentary about farmers of different sizes becoming entrepreneurs as they marketed relatively new products. It was very inspiring and I wish them all the best as, they do themselves and their country proud but I definitely concluded that it wasn’t for me as the amount of skill involved and the amount of selling time away from home seemed incredible. This week should be busy as the phone has started to ring for outside jobs with the digger and the last of the stale cows are to go dry and the autumn calvers are to be classified. So here’s hoping for good results to help sell bulls. 38

On Our Farm

January 9th 2018 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 4000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant poults are raised. In addition we produce Agrimart, which is read by 8,000 farmers and agriculturally related businesses. I am so excited to finally be working at home. Ever since I was a little boy I have always wanted to farm with my father. Throughout school and university I took every opportunity to come home and work on the farm. Even whilst I was rowing professionally and was only allowed a couple of weeks off a year I would spend my holidays on the farm. I really am a believer that for some people farming is in the blood. Having arrived home in early December the first few weeks were spent moving into our new home, feeding cattle and the odd day shooting. It was not until the third of January that I officially took over the day to day running of the farm. We have decided that I will assume the role of farm manager while my father will be responsible for the overall running of the business as well as looking at new projects. So far the handover has gone well, it is early days and I have not yet had to resort to ringing up anyone in the area desperately offering them money to get their tractor stuck so that I can get him off the farm in Wendy! My main aim for the first year is to try and raise the productivity of each of our enterprises at Sandystones with little or no increase in cost. For example with the hens I would like to improve production by 10% whilst also reducing mortality. The crucial thing with hens is to prevent them getting stressed. As soon as they do they will start feather pecking go off lay and in very extreme circumstances die. On a recent trip to see an egg producer in Wales I observed a number of things he had implemented in his sheds to keep the hens ‘happy’. He sprayed red dots on breeze blocks for the birds to peck at, built sandpits to dust bathe in and Alfalfa bales as a source of fibre. These three simple things I have started doing with our new flock at home. I will be interested to see what effect they will have over the next few months. Whilst in Wales I stayed in pub near one of the country’s biggest shoots. I got chatting to one of the locals who was very keen to tell me that a former President of the United States had just been shooting and had shot a huge number of birds. The following week a well-known Russian football club owner turned up to shoot and all he wanted to do was shoot twice as many as the former President! These excessive bags must stop otherwise a sport that so many of us love will become victim of political interference. On the farm things have been pretty busy as usual. Mucking out, collecting eggs, clipping cattle, catching up pullets, bruising barley... My father was worried I was going to be bored here with nothing to do! So far I can report that this is certainly not the case. I feel like there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done. Hopefully we will still be getting on well when I write my next article and Wendy has 18 Angus cattle fit and ready for not been sent to Inverness! discerning customers.

Talking......... Organic

January 7th 2018 Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. 2017 has been a year to remember – most notably building our egg production unit and having our first flock of organic layers which are presently doing well, despite some changeable weather over the last few weeks. 2017 has also been a year to forget for many personal reasons and a year end which has seen most people suffering from some sort of ill health. Coughs and colds, flu, pneumonia as well as other ailments – I have not met many healthy folk recently – hopefully everyone will return to full fitness quickly. The Tups are off and will hopefully have done their job well. We are now busy clearing fields to rest them for 90 days before we lamb in them at the end of April. We will feed ewes ad lib clover silage in some fields that are not required at lambing time. It is always a challenge at this time of year to keep the sheep well fed without jeopardising the grass growth and quality needed at lambing time. Fat lambs are being finished on brassicas at present. Any remaining after the brassicas have gone will have to be housed. The cows are due a Johnes test, flukicide and their annual booster for Clostridial vaccine. Calves only need their two doses of Clostridial vaccine. Fat cattle are being drawn this week which will make space at the finishing farm for the cull cows. The routine jobs of feeding, bedding and mucking out fronts of cattle sheds continue unabated. The Hens are doing what they do best – laying eggs. The low temperatures we are seeing at the moment are making it a challenge to keep the temperatures up in the four houses. This is the reality of having pop holes open and the wind from the north east blowing in. We are still to receive our BPS. We contacted the RPA at the end of November to check that everything was progressing as planned and were informed that everything was fine. 2 weeks into December we received a letter stating that they had made some field changes, which was expected as we had required the new chicken shed and ranges to be mapped. A week later we received a letter stating that we could not be paid yet as the RLR did not match our organic land schedule. Claire is less than happy about having to spell out that it does not match as we need the updated plans and field numbers to update the schedule.... to use a bad pun – it’s literally chicken and egg! We are continuing to try and make our business more robust. With the future uncertainty of the amount and availability of support we are looking into a number of diversification projects. Planning has gone in to convert an old granary into a holiday cottage. I also plan to put up a couple of new buildings up this year, finances permitting; a new muck store and a general purpose building for storage – this will be a replacement building for the timber shed which is starting to lean down the hill.

Alnwick Properties Attention all landlords and estate managers in England From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Government’s minimum energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. Scotland is still looking at this matter. If domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F, G, H or worse then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to it’s poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete draft EPC reports for your properties now so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for England and the Scottish Borders.

The Electronic Communications Code Having come into force on 28 December under the Digital Economy Act 2017, the Electronic Communications Code introduces new statutory rules on communications infrastructure and services. This forms part of the Government’s plan to improve the provision of communication networks, increase investment in new technology and give more freedom to providers. The main changes are in relation to rents, valuations, assignment, site sharing, additional equipment, and contracting. Rents will be based on a “no scheme” valuation rather than the current open market valuation in order to disregard the existence of a telecoms lease and the beneficial rights operators benefit from under the Code, meaning it will be based on the value to the landlord rather than the operator. This is likely to see reduced rents in the future, as well as a fall in any compensation received. Should operators wish to share their equipment with other providers, they are no longer required to seek the permission of the landlord. This will see a reduction in any additional income received from site sharing agreements. Furthermore, operators will have the option to transfer their leases to other operators of their choosing without the landlord’s consent or agreeing improved terms. Landlords no longer have the option to negotiate more favourable terms when operators wish to upgrade equipment, as this can also be done without the landlord’s consent, provided there is minimal adverse visual impact and no additional burden on the landowner. There are areas which have remained broadly unchanged in the new Code, including the requirement that any rights will largely be conveyed in written agreements, usually in the form of a lease. Furthermore, the Code has no option for opting out, though new lease agreements will only be protected by the new Code rather than the existing Code and the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. The Electronic Communications Code gives greater rights to providers of communications apparatus. However, the new regulations will not apply retrospectively to existing agreements, and it is important to seek professional advice prior to entering into any agreements in order to protect your interests as a landowner or an existing landlord. This new Code has been developed in order to provide an easier platform for telecommunications companies to develop mobile and broadband networks, however, if the risk outweighs the reward for landowners then it could have the completely opposite effect. Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Happy New Year to all the readers of Agrimart (or at least the ones who bother reading this part). A change of year hasn’t brought a substantive change in the weather, it maybe warmed up for a few days, which allowed the snow and ice to melt a bit, but today (7/1/18) it is back to sub zero temperatures again. On the bright side there is not much snow cover on the hills, which hopefully means that when it does melt we might not get flooded. Following a busy December where a large volume of potatoes have been shipped, the New Year has brought a substantial slowdown in movement. This is always the case but it is especially painful this year as the oversupply in the market place means that uncontracted potatoes aren’t worth a lot of money and they are slow to move meaning higher storage costs. Maybe we need more of a charm offensive with consumers to shift tonnes along with a reduction in area to reduce volume in the future! Away from the potato sheds the guys have been taking some well-earned time off. With the spread of cropping we now have, it is difficult to have periods where everyone can be off. Christmas and New Year is one of them but even then there is always something to do, whether it is loading potato lorries or chasing geese or pigeons. We will be back at full strength from the 8th of January, this will allow us to carry on with our preventative maintenance programmes. With much of our specialised machinery having been bought second hand in the first place it is obviously getting on, so needs more doing to it, but it does reduce the depreciation bill! In fact some of it might even be going up in value (maybe just the Land Rover though). It is always a balancing act between replacement and repair. The machines that are uppermost in my mind at the moment are the two telehandlers we run. As with most machines of this type they are probably the least looked after but the most abused, but at least with carrying out 6 monthly LOLER tests on them (because they are used with a man basket), we have to keep up with worn and damaged parts. However not everything runs forever and I’m debating whether to upgrade one of them or spend money rebuilding it. The saving grace for them is that they are very easy to work on, having mostly cable and rod operated systems as opposed to electrical systems and valves. I think that the plan for the moment is to keep them running, as long as something catastrophic doesn’t go wrong (what’s the bets that one will blow up next week). The next few weeks will also bring the usual winter meetings whereby we will be “educated” on the latest chemicals, varieties and techniques. I always look forward to the various get together as it is a useful way of networking and exchanging ideas, in addition to collecting NROSO and BASIS points! 48

Talking.........FROM THE BOUNDARY

January 9th 2018

Dateline: January 3rd 2018 Time: 0700 This is the first day of the rest of my life. What do I do? New man in charge - strict instructions from the Boss (mine, not Ian’s from NZ) not to interfere. Do I stay in bed? – Not a natural place for me to linger Do I go to the farm? That would be interfering so don’t go there. Shall I walk the dogs? – Usually the prerogative of the Boss, don’t want to upset her schedule. Guy Lee Maybe I should read a book? – haven’t done that in the morning for a very long time. I think I’ll have breakfast and see what happens. The plan is to speak to Tony and Alan later in the morning to explain that I am no longer the man in charge and that Hugo has absolute authority. Eventually the farm manager appears with a list of parts needed to fix various breakdowns over New Year. Should I offer to go? I don’t want to upset his plans, maybe he looks forward to a drive to Kelso. Eventually I sum up courage and suggest that I have time to make the journey. “If you’re offering that would be great” was his honest response. So I am now fulfilling my dream role as ‘gofer’ It is now a week since Sandystones Ltd has been under new management and I have to say I can’t pick fault with his attitude or style. We get on well, rub ideas off each other and I am quite confident the transition will be a success. Hugo’s last article in Agrimart about his observations in New Zealand, particularly the incredible growth of the dairy industry prompted a communication from Richard Sadler. Richard is a very old friend, we first met in 1988 when we were farming near Guildford in Surrey. He was the meat buyer at Waitrose and we were selling lambs to Chitty’s abattoir who were suppliers to Waitrose. Richard was responsible for the first of the dedicated supply chain models that the majority of the major retailers have adopted over the years. He forged very strong links with lamb suppliers in New Zealand believing that the quality of their lamb, which is on the shelves in our Spring, was not a threat to our sheep producers but a positive benefit as it provided high quality, young tender meat at a time of year when ours is naturally more mature. Below is the email correspondence, sent via me, between Richard Sadler and Ian MacKenzie over a 24 hour period: RS I always enjoy the Agrimart articles and having read Hugo’s N.Z report, and those recently from Ian Mackenzie and also watching Adam Henson’s Countryfile programme featuring N.Z agriculture and my own observations while there last July, I think the Kiwis [or some like the dairy sector anyway] could be heading in the wrong direction by following the money! I was, like Hugo, amazed at the HUGE irrigation programmes going on in the Canterbury plain. It was mid winter and with no cover, thousands of dry cows, pregnant cows and heifers were up to their knees in mud and c--p, not a good look and certainly not the “Green Clean” image N.Z agriculture likes to purvey. I met up with Mark Clarkson [now retired C.E.O of Anzco and CMP] and Rennie Davidson Marketing Director of same. Certainly they both have a Sheep and Beef leaning, but they were highly critical of the activities of dairy money on the plain. The characteristic Cypress hedges have been ripped up to allow for the irrigators and reports suggest that water aquifers are so low salt water is being sucked in creating a high saline level in drinking water. IM Richard is right about the wintering of cows making a mess in winter, but sheep and beef cattle do too, so Clarkson et al and the sheep and beef industry are not let off the hook. It was also our wettest winter for years but that is no real excuse. This last winter reminded farmers of the importance of hedges as shelter for stock. Our cows’ winter resort is surrounded by hedges and our winter feeding programme is designed to ensure that we will have feed behind the hedges for sheltered feeding should we have another winter storm. It makes a huge difference. He is wrong about the state of our aquifers though. There is nowhere in NZ where salt water intrusion has been experienced due to over abstraction. There have been the odd case where wells have been sunk right by the coast and salt water has been found instead of fresh water. The aquifers did get to record lows last summer but after a wet winter they have recovered to overflowing hence the floods we had in July. Our aquifers are effectively a huge slow flowing river. They empty naturally out to sea regardless of use when there is no refilling, but can recharge very rapidly once we have rain. We are downstream of the most intensively farmed area in Canterbury and monitor the quality of our water pretty closely. Our house bore is only at 23m and the water quality is superb....actually meets bottling standards. Our irrigation bores are deeper and (up to 110m deep) and again the water quality is superb. RS On the water front I stand corrected, although not convinced! My last working visit to N.Z was 2005 and even then a rise in saline levels in drinking water was a news topic. On this last trip, it created quite a discussion in a small group of “Agri folk” I went Duck shooting with around Ashburton. “No smoke without fire” I say. Watch this space and hope you don’t have a drought any time soon! Re the cows: strip grazing cows/heifers behind root crops at high stocking rates creates much worse visual picture [and possible health issues] than beef cattle or sheep overwintering on pasture at sensible stocking rates. We have plenty of feet problems in our Dairy sector, concrete floors, poor stockmanship and in my view, genetic weakness being the main causes here of course. All I am suggesting is you have a potential welfare issue brewing and believe me if it happens the industry could be hung out to dry in the tabloid press. IM Yes I agree that the animal welfare issue with the way we winter our stock is biting us. A difference in culture has caught us out a bit and is something that recent feed back from increasing winter tourist traffic has identified. The water quality issue you were discussing in the maimai would have been nitrates in the groundwater, rather than salt water intrusion, and is an issue we are addressing. Interestingly the worst nitrate plume in Canterbury was caused by effluent discharges from the SFF (Silver Fern Farms) Fairton plant, the Ashburton Abattoir and CMP Seafield. These plants are all in the same area and have contributed to a bit of a problem that has now been addressed and is slowly rectifying itself. Graeme Harrison (ex chair of ANZCO) is part of a group I’m involved with working on a project to recharge our aquifers to help dilute the nitrate issues. Having said that I am in complete agreement that the dairy industry has expanded into parts of NZ where they shouldn’t be. Notably the Mackenzie and upper reaches of the Waikato river. However, I’ll need more persuasion that cows and the Canterbury Plains are incompatible! On a different note I look back to my Nuffield, now 25 years ago, to when you set up for me a fantastic couple of days following your Waitrose lamb chain of production. I learnt a whole heap about the production of food vs selling stuff I grow on farm. I’d like to think I have modelled my farming operation on the basis of high quality food production as a result. I am very grateful to you and Guy for organising that so long ago. RS Thanks Ian, yes you are quite right Nitrates not salt. Sorry my fuddled old brain! A very interesting topic however. Anyway you and Guy should both be very proud of your farming and business achievements, I am always impressed by your enthusiasm and energy levels so clearly portrayed in your Agrimart articles. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I do. However as you both take up more of a back seat role and mix and meet with people less engaged in agriculture you will quickly realise the things we all took so passionately and responsibly don’t hold much interest for the public at large. Unless fanned by the tabloid [shock horror] press of course! It never ceases to amaze me how disconnected consumers are from food production, although probably not so bad in N.Z as here with our large urban populations.

Talking......... from Lincolnshire

January 4th 2018

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Last month I headed north into the wilds of Scotland for the first time in over 20 years, with the notable exception of Emma’s wedding when it was dark the majority of the time, for a day’s shooting with the Lees. Judging by the distinguished guests at the shoot table I can only assume the real English invasion of Scotland came in the early to mid 1990’s, rather than at the hands of King Edward et al. Either side of the border was some stunning scenery, exaggerated by a clear frosty day, yet I always judge a place on its inherent ability to be farmed; and more importantly the proximity of the nearest curry house. Yet I was assured by some local farmers that despite the hills, meandering watercourses and trees this was in fact God’s own country which will produce a multitude of commodity and high value crops. I must confess to being impressed by the dynamism of the local farmers, the vast majority having many different income streams from their land, but when I was told that cutting wheat at 24% moisture content was common practise I didn’t know whether to applaud the stoicism or pat them on the back in sympathy. If we were to try cutting wheat at that moisture, I would assume it is not fit and fully expect to see water running out of the back of the trailers! Upon my return we have had a seasonal shift in the weather, to very wet, and the dykes (ditches) on the farm went from dry to 3ft deep within 24hrs. It is certainly easy to tell the The pumping station which fields which were re-drained 5 years ago and those that are awaiting their modernisation. controls the water level I have just read through Mr. Gove’s OFC speech setting out his vision of the future for the industry which was interesting, but threw up few surprises and I feel he has missed the real essence of being a farmer. His vision with robots, sensors and technology interspersed with flower meadows will have its place, yet will never be able to fully replicate the feeling in your stomach when you are faced with a decision based on a large number of uncontrollable variables. One of his sign off statements was, “So we plan to provide new support for those who choose to farm in the most sustainable fashion.” Does anyone have some sheep I can buy?? The new drains working!
