NEGOTIATING IN THE SNOW

Yesterday a call came through to pull this out. Just what I love, the challenge of a sinking digger! BUT when I am needed where is he? Nowhere to be seen, wasting his time chasing a white ball around a green field and by the time he hit over 100 shots the machine was out and we lost the opportunity. The shed I pulled at Over Langshaw gave me a very nerve wracking experience. I managed the snowy road up to the farm but when I turned off I failed to negotiate the right handed slope. All my wheels wanted to do was to go straight on with the real risk of sliding into the building. I had to be pulled by a tractor to save damage and embarrassment. The pull went fine but there was no way I could get out the way that I came in. So across virgin snow I drove steadily up the field to rejoin the road through A missed opportunity! another gate further up. With a risk of sideways slipping down the hill I held my breath... Luckily I made it but the exit was impossible with a snowdrift blocking my passage. Off came my necklace again and I was soon back on terra firma courtesy of the same John Deere. My next task was to pull the four houses at Gosford back into position. They had laid concrete panels to sit the houses on, so it needed precision pulling to get them into the correct position. This was achieved as much to the satisfaction of the customer as well as myself feeling rather smug. And then the big one last week - two houses at Easter Softlaw near Kelso. 30mm of rain the previous night had made the ground conditions bottomless. These are the biggest and the longest sheds I pull –70 metres each and it took all my effort, both pulleys and a lot of sweat but I managed despite the skids on each shed ploughing into the ground rather than riding on top. I just drove out unassisted although I have left some very deep ruts – sorry Douglas! Precision pulling Stuck at the gateway

March 8th 2021 Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye, oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. The past month has been very busy although probably not particularly productive. The “Beast from the East Two” was a real nuisance and the first real winter weather I have had to contend with since starting the deer enterprise. Feeding the hinds on the hill was a battle with roads and gates needing constantly dug out and hungry deer requiring a huge amount of feed delivered to them to survive the conditions. The deer have coped admirably but it has made me seriously consider how they are wintered in the future. The weather can make out wintering tough on man, beast and machine but housing deer can have its challenges too with these quasi-domesticated animals. JCB to the rescue When the snow melted it shifted seriously quickly which caused issues, with one shed of rearing calves needing evacuated as water washed down the hill over frozen ground inundating part of the steading. These calves are now out on grass with little chance of persuading them back indoors, much to their delight but my horror as the land is really not fit for turnout until late April/May. This is putting the grass on a backfoot before we’ve even begun. Typically, the snow also coincided with pigs leaving. The amount of work required to ensure the lorry could get in and out was exhausting. Thankfully only a small amount of tow rope persuasion was required and all went well. It made me consider the DEFRA consultation on animal transport. If we could not have loaded these pigs because it was less than 5°C they would have been stuck on farm for weeks. This would have had welfare implications for those pigs and also those following. The proposals as they stand are a major concern and should be firmly rejected. Incredibly after the snow melted, the land recovered quickly and ploughing and some fertiliser applications have resumed. Spring barley seed is now on farm and sowing does not feel that far away… famous last words? I’ve had to ramp up my war on pigeons over the oilseed rape as it now tries to pull away. I don’t mind a bit of grazing on old leaf over the winter but at this time of year the growing crown of the plant is vulnerable. Kites, whirling globes, rope bangers and rockets (my favourite!) are all deployed in the daily battle. It’s not a bad job on a sunny spring-like day and the dog enjoys tramping across the fields despite her master occasionally Pigeons not welcome here stopping and shaking his fist at the sky and shouting obscenities at passing birds. Zoom fatigue has certainly hit with many hours of my life spent in front of a screen for AGMs, meetings, conferences and webinars. Although it’s a relief not to be racing around the countryside going to meetings I miss having the chance to be off farm - it’s healthy and necessary to take a step away from the daily routine and spend time away from the desk/workshop/tractor. I look forward to the days when we can meet face to face, have a blether and physically and mentally remove ourselves from the confines of our own surroundings. With our My wife unwrapping something on Valentine’s day youngest now back to school even the school run is an exciting excuse to see the wider world.

Relinquishment & Assignation of 1991 Act Tenancies New legislation set out under The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016 came into force on 28 February 2021 and has sparked conversations amongst those in the tenanted sector across Scotland. The new legislation enables most tenants with a secure 91 act tenancy to offer to relinquish their tenancy to their landlord. If the landlord does not wish to buy the tenancy, the legislation consequently allows for the tenant to advertise their tenancy on the open market and to assign it, for value, to a new entrant or ‘progressing farmer’. Not only is this an opportunity for farmers who may be considering retirement to move on from their tenanted farm, it is also an opportunity for new and young people to enter the industry, or those wishing to progress their businesses. The legislation aims to encourage conversations amongst farming families about succession planning and the opportunities this statute could provide. The key point to take from the new legislation is that tenants should think long and hard before taking any steps in the formal process to relinquish their tenancy. With the legislation setting out a strict timetable and a demanding list of information required for the process to be carried out, it is vital that tenants have considered all aspects before proceeding. If the decision is made to progress with a formal notice of intention to relinquish, the Tenant Farming Commissioner will appoint a valuer to calculate the amount payable by the landlord to the tenant. Several factors will be assessed including the market value of the holding both with and without vacant possession as well as consideration for any tenant improvements and dilapidations. Although this could provide opportunity for both new and existing tenants, careful consideration should be taken over the pros and cons of either relinquishing or assigning a tenancy. Perhaps, most importantly, tenants should consider whether the value of the tenancy would provide sufficient funds for the farmer to retire from the farm along with the tax implications of obtaining payment for the tenancy. Not only this, but it should also be made clear that the professional costs of the valuer and any legal advice required will all be the responsibility of the tenant in this situation. It is strongly advised that informal discussions between landlord and tenant are entered into prior to serving any notices. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. March 2021 Caroline Millar, Lead, Scottish Agritourism Agritourism in Scotland is nothing new. Recently one of the pioneers of Scottish agritourism, Margaret McConchie or GG as she was known to many, passed away age 101 at Laggan Farm in Dumfries and Galloway. GG set up one of Scotland’s first farm caravan parks at Mossyard by the beach prior to World War two. The Lennox family on Loch Lomondside will next year celebrate fifty years in agritourism and there are many more examples. The last ten years has seen a surge in farmers entering the sector and today the sheer diversity of agritourism offering is evident from the traditional farmhouse bed and breakfast to all types of on farm accommodation. Camping and caravanning, glamping pods, converted farm cottages, luxury lodges are just some of the ways you can stay on a farm for a break or holiday, and range from budget to luxury. Day visits to farms and adding on experiences on to a farm stay is ensuring that the “agri” is firmly being put into “agritourism” with an increasing demand from visitors for farm tours and more farmers offering these interactive experiences across Scotland. The travel trade is becoming an increasingly important market for farmers with more organised coaches of visitors interested in visiting a farm for a slice of farm life. At the heart of what farmers do is producing food and many of the most successful countries in agritourism globally have eating and drinking of farm or local farm produce at their core. Scotland has an amazing array of farm shops and we have seen through Covid 19 a shift in consumer choice to buy more produce direct from farmers and to support local. The key growth opportunity for our sector is the development of more famers offering on farm dining experiences, either after a farm tour, for guests staying in accommodation or farm catering for larger farm events or more permanent farm cafes and restaurants. So food experiences and a more interactive agri experience from the farming host is definitely the line of travel for the Scottish agritourism sector and both of these will help to further define us as a distinctive offering from generic rural tourism. Adventure and outdoor tourism in general is growing and when you combine a sporting activity such as watersports or mountain biking on a farm followed by the opportunity to eat farm The Hideaway Experience, Dundee produce for lunch on site, you are dealing with some pretty hungry customers for a plate of food. All of this combines to deliver a fantastic customer offering for the tourist visitor or the local leisure visitor. Covid has impacted the agritourism sector hard, as it has to all types of tourism and leisure. The sector has many things going for it. A strong network of entrepreneurial farmers in a close knit community who are keen to share learnings and to support each other. We came together quickly and early on in the pandemic to form a weekly support group and a WhatsApp group which shared knowledge all day, every day. The Scottish Enterprise Agritourism Monitor Farm Programme has also helped to facilitate knowledge exchange, build confidence and aid skills development and has been invaluable during Covid 19. At the very start of Covid we took to facebook live for daily tours of the lambing shed, then more general farm tours. This was designed to bring some joy to those stuck at home in lockdown but quickly we had an international audience with people tuning in each day from over twenty countries. By June our sector had formed a formal new sector body, Scottish Agritourism. Working closely with Visit Scotland, Scottish Agritourism is driving ahead with investment in a new consumer facing e-commerce website for farmers and crofters who sell produce, welcome visitors on to farm for a day visit or for an overnight stay. The first phase of the website launches in early April and will feature different agritourism campaigns as well as list the different farms people can visit. Agritourism has the ability to be the link on a daily basis between farmers and consumers and to build relationships and trust. The first campaign is Lambathon 2021. Who would have thought we would have still been in lockdown one year on from the first lambathon and getting ready again to welcome thousands of people on to Scottish farms virtually to bring new born life, farming and nature to their living rooms. Visit Scotland announced that agritourism is a key consumer trend for 2021/22 and so when we do come out of lockdown we are certain our sector will take off, benefiting many hundreds of farms, crofts and estates throughout the country. March 8th 2021 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 365ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and the introduction of grass leys used to rear Native Dairy X calves. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Just when you think last harvest could not get any worse, the grain trade manages to twist the knife in deeper. I have been sending some wheat away for feed to a home which is not as charitable as it once was. They have found some ergot which means each rejected load has an £18/t deduction on it. I have scoured the heap before each load and have found one sole piece. My issue is not the fact that I have ergot, but more the fact that any lorry which gets loaded the night before and therefore tipped first thing the following morning has passed through without a blemish, but all the lorries loaded and tipped on the same day have been rejected. Added to this is the fact that no evidence is provided of the sample for the claim, and there is no evidence that the sample they are referring too has come out of the lorry I loaded. The cattle out at grass finally Numerous times now I have queried loads with merchants because the registration number of the lorry on the self-billing invoice does not match that on the collection note. Yet the buck always seems to stop with us, the farmer. With trying to park this furore in the back of my relatively small brain, I decided the best thing to do was to focus on the growing crop so I have been out with some Nitrogen and Sulphur. Dare I say all the wheat is looking very well so I am optimistic about its potential. My agronomist and I now have ridiculous discussions based on the last 2 seasons about applying all the nitrogen and shutting the gate because Spring rainfall is not guaranteed anymore which is absurd given our It is amazing how well things look maritime climate. I am going to stick at 3 applications for now, but spring crops will receive more on an 18°C day in Feb! Nitrogen with the drill to try and combat this. The cattle have now finished their winter grazing and have gone onto a grass/wheat volunteer ley full time. They were weighed as they finished their winter mix and had on average gained 1.1kg/day during those 80 days. They truly were a miserable 80 days weather wise so I am delighted with their performance. I now need more cattle to utilise the grass I currently have and some younger ones for next year’s batch. It is all a bit of a learning curve but I am tinkering all the time with the system, hopefully for the better! In fact I have the perfect system worked out in my head which integrates the cattle and arable seamlessly. Unfortunately it is not conducive to a farm with 60% clay content so a little more thought might be needed, and a little less farming simulator enthusiasm!

On Our Farm

March 10th 2021 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 6000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant & partidge poults are raised. It was a normal Wednesday evening and I had just popped home to say goodnight to the children before another load of store cattle arrived from Stirling. As we were tucking the children into bed the dogs started going mad tearing around the house barking. Jess let them outside as I went back up to the steading to meet the lorry. It was then that I received a rather panicked phone call saying that there were cattle in our garden. I thought she was joking at first but after a quick scan of the pens I discovered that nine of our biggest steers had managed to rub a gate open and get out. Amazingly they had walked out of the steading past my parent’s house 200m down the road and into our garden without anyone seeing them. Unfortunately, they decided to get out just as the snow had melted and the lawn was waterlogged. What a mess they made! Somehow one even got entangled in the childrens’ climbing frame and started careering around the garden with it! After leaving three broken fences, a flat packed climbing frame and a ploughed-up lawn, the stores were back in their pen. We have only just finished repairing the lawn, oh the joys of keeping livestock! The recent window of dry weather has allowed us to get on with some field work. All the winter crops have had their first dose of Forks out repairing very deep hoof prints. At least it was nitrogen as well as a maintenance application of P and K. On the the farmer’s garden! whole crops have come out of the winter looking ok. Morrisons announced that it would be the first supermarket to be completely supplied by ‘net zero’ carbon British farmers - by 2030. Five years ahead of the rest of the market. It went even further saying that it expected to launch affordable net zero carbon eggs in 2022 and beef in 2025. These are very bold and ambitious headline grabbing statements which I for one struggle to see how they will be achieved in such a short time frame. Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. I have now finished my two-year NFU Chairmanship for Northumberland county. I have stepped down, but will continue with the NFU as Council Delegate. The two years have flown by, but sadly due to the pandemic I wasn’t able to see as many members and attend as many events as I would have liked. The challenges that presented themselves over the twoyears included Northumberland’s first TB radial, Brexit and the Agriculture Bill, the ongoing questions surrounding future schemes as well as Trade and not forgetting the Lynx rewilding, which having been dismissed as a bad idea two years ago, seems to have reared its head again. One positive outcome from the TB radial is that to date we have not found any more TB in cattle and APHA are confident that there is no reservoir in the wildlife, which is very good news. The only way that TB will arrive in Northumberland is on the back of a wagon and we should all continue to be very careful when trading livestock. I have recently purchased a few Pedigree Suffolks off my neighbour and friend Hans Pörksen, who is retiring. We are planning to breed our own Tups for our commercial flock. We put them to the Tup a little earlier than the main flock, so they would lamb and be up and away before the cattle started calving and the commercial flock lambing. Next year we may consider lambing them with our commercial flock. The in-calf cows and heifers have all received their scour vaccine and mineral bolus prior to calving and the shepherd is just starting to administer the Heptavac jab and mineral bolus to the ewes. The bulls are going to get a different bolus which has been formulated for foot health. I have ordered the seed for this year’s wholecrop; Barley/oat/vetch mix undersown with a white clover multispecies ley. This will be sown where the brassicas are currently being grazed by the remaining hoggs. Sadly, there are less than a handful left, normally that would be a good result, but with the lamb price and cull ewe price so strong at the moment, I could do with a few more! Inspections are a little bit like buses. With the organic inspection booked for later this week, the Lion Code rang a few days later and theirs is now next week. I am hopeful that a third doesn’t pop up! In terms of paperwork, presenting it online is much slicker, especially as all the forms have now been digitized. Copy and paste is very useful, especially for field records. Claire’s aim is to have the farm “Audit Ready” at a moments notice and to be fair, we are not Young Angus bulls, 1 – 2 years old far off that. All the information is there, Pedigree AA & AAX bulling heifers however it’s not always neatly filed, and more often than not the missing piece is BVD and Johnes accredited: Lepto and BVD vaccinated tucked away in my head.
