NEVER KNOWINGLY FAILED Wendy writes

This must go down as the greatest week in my life - five hen sheds, a livestock lorry and a forklift all successfully moved or recovered. It started off on Friday a week ago with a trip up the A68 to Dalkeith, the weather was good, the ground reasonably dry and a shed that came away easily. I was nervous as this was my first pull since he got my cable mixed up in the drum. Nervously he put the spades down and started to winch; without a groan or a strain I did my bit. A weekend off, celebrating the fantastic thumping that Scotland inflicted on England at Murrayfield. I have to admit to being bought up in England from an early age but I have always given my support to Scotland. Why wouldn’t I with him, as English as you get, at the wheel. On Monday we went to Over Langshaw, near Gala, again a good day and despite the very awkward position I had to pull from, another satisfied client. On Tuesday the snow came and we were bidden to Peebles. As hard as I tried I did struggle with visibility as the wipers became built up with ice and ineffective. Luckily it was showers and we were soon out of them and into blue sky before the clouds caught up with us. Wednesday was moving the shed on this farm that was done in a blizzard, everyone involved including me was frozen to the core. Luckily the young new boss was alert enough to realise we had to do it then as Thursday and Friday were worse. Stuck, slid off the road On Friday I had a call to recover an Oliver’s Livestock lorry that had slid off the road. The snow was deep, access difficult and he took me down the most stupid incline I have ever seen. He was trying to reverse me through a narrow gate at an angle off a steep slope. Of course you fall over when you can’t stand up and so I did. I slid straight into Michael Bayne’s brand new fence and stuck there. With the loan of Michael’s wire cutters the fence was cut free and I gingerly reversed into the field. Soon I was hitched up to the wagon and away it came from the hedge and back on to the road. A very satisfied engineer drove the lorry back to Eccles. The next day there was a call from a Mr Rutherford who had got his Manitou forklift into a very unfortunate position whilst snow ploughing a minor road. Only a fence and a hedge were preventing it from ending upside down in a burn some 10 feet below. Stuck on the fence This was not easy as I could not get off the road and pull it at the angle needed. It slid down the side of the hedge and only came up when it was at 90° and had no alternative. Much to my embarrassment I was then stuck and despite attempts from the Manitou to pull me backwards and forwards he had to send for poor Hugo and a tractor. The last thing he wanted to do on a Saturday night was save his father from ignominy. And then yesterday I was pulling a hen shed when the skids on the shed broke away. Not only was this an embarrassing incident as I hate causing damage however blameless I am, but made worse when he got his welly boot caught on my rear ladder and fell out. He has seriously torn his hamstring. ‘Ha ha’ says I Up she comes ‘serves you right’.

Succession Planning The importance of having a succession plan in place for you and your business cannot ever be underestimated, particularly in the agricultural sector. Succession planning is a process rather than an event and the earlier planning begins the greater the number of options. It must allow you to grow the value of the business whilst also effectively transferring the ownership and management of the business over a period of time. The issue of preparing such a plan can be difficult to initiate in a family business, in particular where there may be various levels of family involvement. However, no matter how difficult this may seem it must not be avoided and the plan should be considered and discussed openly with your family and advisors. Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax are important considerations in any succession planning discussions. Appropriate planning is vital to ensure the transfer of the farm business efficiently and effectively while considering the tax consequences and preserving as much family capital as possible. As part of the discussions various documents such as Pension policies, Partnerships Agreements and Wills must be considered to ensure these comply with the wishes of all involved. Due to the complex nature of succession planning, professional advice is essential and our Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisors are here to offer such advice and to discuss with you your own thoughts and aspirations. We appreciate that all cases are different and this article only covers general points and is not tailored to any particular circumstance. Confidentiality is one of our core principles and you can be assured that your affairs will be dealt with in a professional manner. For further information or to discuss matters in more detail, please contact our Office on 01289 302463.

March 4th 2018

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. I think it will be officially announced any day that our weather patterns are now replicating the late ‘70’s. This is of course hugely disappointing to the hairy androgynous anti farming mob, and the odd Fife farmer who has been known to write articles for the Scottish Farmer about NZ. They all seem to believe the end of the world is just around the corner when records show that we are most likely following the same 30 year weather cycle that we have endured since records began, with a little help from the La Niña effect. The hairy androgynous anti farming mob want to blame farmers for dry rivers and global warming and pollution and mass extinctions and Donald being elected president. Unfortunately the facts don’t support the rhetoric. The rivers are all flowing (and for the most part) with clear pristine water that is the envy of the world. The regions that were declared in drought a month ago are now spending the drought relief monies protecting their farms from the return of incessant rain and the occasional flood. At Akaunui we are host to thriving populations of at least 3 species that the HAAF mob would like to claim are on the point of extinction and blame us for that loss. The black billed gull is one of those species, but several thousand of them were mobbing William’s new tractor today as he started post Black billed gulls mobbing the new toy harvest cultivation. He was more worried about the worms they were feeding on becoming extinct! We farmers have had the pleasure of the delightful irony of watching all our urban critics having to face up to their own contributions to water pollution. Auckland and Wellington have both had their swimming beaches closed for long periods over the summer because of a wilful neglect of their sewerage and storm water infrastructure which allows raw sewerage to spill onto their beaches every time it rains. Christchurch has had to chlorinate their water supply for the first time in history because of the risk of their own sewerage seeping into the ground water and contaminating it. They were so busy blaming farmers that they were too arrogantly stupid to identify the risks of their own neglect. We farmers shouldn’t enjoy watching them squirm, but after the vituperative attacks we’ve had to endure over the last few years it is very hard not to smile a little! The last government brought in far reaching new requirements to maintain or improve water quality for the whole of NZ. Farmers have been required to address their effects on water quality (nitrates, faecal contamination and sediment) for a while now. Water quality in rural rivers and streams is for the most part getting better due to riparian fencing and planting, and better nutrient management. It is time our urban cousins stopped blaming us farmers for everything and recognised their own environmental externalities and spent some money to sort out their problems...and for the Fife farmer to get his facts straight before he writes any more dribble about NZ.

Talking........ from Lincolnshire

March 5th 2018

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. 365ha of cropping includes winter wheat, spring barley, winter oilseed rape, spring beans and managed fallow. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. The shame of being an Englishman. Currently it would appear we are experiencing what historians call ‘winter’. There is snow on the ground, snow in the air and weather warnings that the last horsemen of the apocalypse were seen heading to London. Unfortunately, we have had to write-off one van from my wife’s business fleet due to a snow induced accident. Yet given she has been running a fleet of 25+ vans for over 10yrs, the fact this is the very first to be written off is probably something of an achievement. The English went to Murrayfield with an arrogance that our superior size and budget would blow One of Lincolnshire’s ‘closed’ A roads away the plucky Celts; and we returned home with a deserved bloody nose. When does loyalty in selection turn from a positive to undermining the performance of the team? We have a full back that would be very good at badger baiting, but ask him to pass a rugby ball and it ends in row Z. Or a fly half who when pitched against a slightly lethargic, post-siesta Italian openside is a world beater; yet send a bloodied, seething descendant of William Wallace towards his throat and he is back peddling quicker than Neville Chamberlin. And so it is with parts for my combine. It would appear that my loyalty is being tested given the fact parts are 25% dearer than from a non-franchised dealer. If the parts in question came to a couple of hundred quid who would worry too much, but when the price difference is that of a family holiday it does make me determined to thrash a better deal, or vote with my feet. I was reading another lesser farming publication recently, regarding a recent champion of the industry whose stated aim was to produce wheat for £100/t before rent and finance. Rent locally can add £45/t to the cost let alone being borrowed to the hilt. How can you think of combining when the windchill is -15? With this in mind, a friend and I decided to do some unofficial benchmarking to see if we could become farming champions, or at least be allowed on Twitter. For the last 2 years my COP of wheat has been £106/t, which I am still hoping to improve upon. But the most interesting part was Nick’s spring beans had yielded a majestic 6.9t/ha and mine in comparison a rather paltry 5.17t/ha. But once the figures had been crunched and the sale price standardised my beans had been £13.59/ha (statistically insignificant!!) more profitable. Once I have finished writing this I had better begin scripting my acceptance speech and work out how to express myself in less than 140 characters!!

Alnwick Properties Important reminder

Attention all landlords and property managers in England

From April 2018 all domestic and commercial property that is being let out needs to meet the Governments minumium energy standards of an energy rating of E or better. This does not apply in Scotland yet. This applies to listed buildings and property in conservation areas. If the domestic or commercial property has an energy rating of F – G or H or worse, then you cannot let out the property. This has major implications for landlords, letting agents and estate managers, because finance companies, bank and building societies will not allow the property to be used as security if it cannot be let out due to is poor energy rating. Plus, private landlords will end up with unlettable properties. Alnwick Properties can complete a draft EPC calculation for your properties, give advice so you can look at what needs done to get your properties up to E ratings or even better and then produce your legal EPC document that will last 10 years. Alnwick Properties are commercial and domestic energy assessors for Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) for property in England and Scotland.

Talking......... Business with George F White

March 2018

Building Business Resilience to Weather the Storm Across the agricultural industry, there’s a high degree of uncertainty as farmers and rural businesses wonder what a post Brexit farming sector in the UK will look like. International trade and domestic policy seem to be high on the agenda in terms of how this will work when we leave the European Union. Uncertainty in agriculture isn’t particularly new - whether it’s market volatility, frustrating weather conditions, or the decisions our politicians make on the industry’s behalf, farmers have always had to adapt and manage turbulent and uncertain times. David Hume Given the degree of change in the sector, farmers really must ensure their business is resilient enough to weather any storm. It is clear now that there is a significant change in farm subsidies on the horizon with options currently being considered such as; capping larger claimants, a percentage reduction across the board or a hybrid of the two. This is worrying for our industry as the Basic Payment Scheme and Environmental Grants account for a large percentage of turnover in many farming businesses. When we consider the average profit per farm across the region, actual farming income leaves businesses at a loss, with subsidy and diversification income generating profit. Even with subsidy payments looking like they will be focusing more on environmental schemes, farm businesses are going to have to be adaptable and open to change whether they still want to access these subsidy schemes or improve their enterprise performance. It is absolutely vital, therefore, that farmers need to understand the financial performance of their businesses and ensure they are flexible and resilient to changing times. The good news is that farmers have the next three or four years to do this, with my advice being to act now. Farmers need to de-risk their businesses by gradually making them less dependent on Government subsidy and more focused on providing quality services and food for the UK food chain. By carrying out regular business analysis and considering business and personal objectives, farmers can ensure that they have a strong, stable business, to sustain challenging times. Farmers often forget to think of personal objectives as well as business ones; sometimes the personal or family objectives are the most important and if carefully considered they can help a farm meet its business objectives. Farmers need to review and monitor their farm’s financial fitness; on a regular basis to identify the business’s strengths and weaknesses and to enable change. Learning and adapting better practices from other farmers to help improve farm performance is central to being successful. It’s vital that farmers fully understand how their businesses are performing compared with farms of a similar nature in a similar geographic area. This will help identify areas for improvement and establish best practice standards. Whether this be done through benchmarking or simply communicating more effectively between one another. The farm team at George F. White are actively working with farmers across the region, to ensure their businesses are in the best shape they can be, to adjust to unexpected times, and become more competitive, more productive and more resilient to risk. By working closely together, we help farmers reach their business, and personal objectives, to develop their own farms into world leading enterprises. If you’d like help to shape your business strategy, and set objectives for business growth and resilience, please get in touch: davidhume@georgefwhite.co.uk or 07739 321 588 36

Talking......... from the boundry

March 6th 2018 What a baptism of fire poor Hugo has had. Life can only get easier, the most snow for many years coming at a time when we are particularly busy. You don’t get much choice as to when hen sheds have to be moved or when new pullets arrive. The programme is made up more than a year in advance and one just has to get on with it whatever the weather. Everything with snow takes twice as long. By last Friday we had run out of hen feed and with no prospect of a lorry getting down our road we had to collect the feed in a grain trailer from the closest point. It is normally blown into a silo and augered out into a mobile Guy Lee feeder. Moving it from the spout of a tipped trailer by skid steer bucket takes time and is a hassle. Bad weather certainly shows up the ‘just in time’ delivery systems retailers employ to keep shelves stocked. Within 3 days of impassable roads, all the local supermarkets were out of bread and milk and that soon extended to nearly all commodities. It was amusing to see a photo of empty shelves in one store with virtually all the stock gone except the Vegan offering. Maybe the threat to our animal derived human food is not as serious as some of the pundits predict. The Scottish Agronomy conference was well attended with an interesting line up of speakers. Bob King of Crisps Malting Group who have two maltings in Scotland, gave an upbeat prospect for malting barley for this year and looking to the future. The surplus that built up three years ago has been used and the supply side is very finely balanced. A weather The vegan offering was the only food not sold out issue or poor quality will see insufficient product for the demand there is - this can only be good news with an improvement in margins. There is a shortage of high DP barley with Swedish imports making up the shortfall. Bill Thomas, head of cell and molecular science at the James Hutton Institute, introduced the ‘Barley Hub’ an international research centre based at the JHI near Dundee. The task is to improve the understanding of barley which is one of Scotland’s most important crops and a fundamental component of many key industries but yet remains a little-known harvest. This is surprising considering how important and influential Scotland’s brewing and whisky industries are. Despite this, few people outside the farming industry appreciate barley’s connection with economic wellbeing but also its significance as a global and nutritious food crop. Jon Knight, head of crop health and protection at AHDB took us through the issues we are going to face as pesticides are withdrawn from use and the lack of new products coming forward. The final speaker was Jenna Ross, a farmer’s daughter from Aberdeen, who is more qualified at a young age than most farmers can achieve in a lifetime. She has a degree, a masters, a PhD and is currently a Nuffield Scholar. She is researching into controlling slugs and took us through the huge number there are in the world especially the giant Spanish slug that can mate with our black slug to produce a super-hybrid. She has had success in trials using nematodes that get inside the slugs outerbody and paralyse it. The challenge is to find a method of field scale application. We are off to Rome next week to see Scotland take on Italy, which after the Wales game looked like a match for the wooden spoon. Two matches later it could be for the championship, it just depends what happens in Dublin. With forecast of temperatures in the high teens, a break from the snow, rain and flooding will be very welcome whatever the result.

On Our Farm

March 6th 2018 Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 4000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose, 14,000 organic point of lay pullets reared each year and 60,000 pheasant poults are raised. In addition we produce Agrimart, which is read by 8,000 farmers and agriculturally related businesses. Things were going so well even the ground was finally starting to dry up. After spending a fantastic weekend down south staying with Jess’s parents watching Scotland beat England. I went to work on Monday with a bounce in my step full of enthusiasm that Spring was just around the corner. It was going to be a very busy next couple of weeks with a hen shed to empty, wash, move and re-stock as well as cattle to clip and pheasant eggs to set. All was going so well and by Tuesday evening after having caught the hens up in record time I really thought I was starting to get the hang of farming at Sandystones. How wrong I was! The beast came and my god did it roar. Everything has been a struggle and even the simplest tasks seem to take forever. Everything got stuck, the feeder wagon, mule, pickup, even Wendy! Added to this all the cattle water froze for the first time in more than five years. The wind-chill was so bad it was freezing as quickly as I was defrosting it. The hardest thing however, was trying to dismantle the hen shed ready for cleaning in conditions not uncommon in northern Siberia. I can never remember having such cold wet hands before - they were sticking to the bolts it was so cold. Incredibly despite everything Mother Nature has thrown at us we have managed to move and wash the shed and are on track to have it ready for the new birds arriving next Tuesday. A huge thank you to Tony and Alan for everything they have done over the last week on the farm in truly horrendous conditions. Snow drifts by the hen shed As I am writing the rain is hammering against the windows and the snow is melting fast. Everywhere is under water and looking a horrendous mess, it really is very disheartening. However, I must not complain I am very aware that there are many farmers who have had it much tougher then me over the last week. I read about one hill farmer who battled all night to get to his sheep to make sure they were fed. I feel sorry for everyone in the middle of lambing or just about to start calving it must be very tough at the moment. The bad weather over the last week has really bought home to me the fantastic community spirit we have locally. Everyone was helping clear roads, pull people out and take food to the elderly or those Tony trying to get to work! without adequate transport. Livestock farmers have been experiencing some terrible press over the last few months and I think the ‘Beast from the East’ has really highlighted how passionate farmers are about the welfare of their animals. I would like congratulate a former neighbour of ours when we were living at Whitsbury, Minette Batters who has just been elected as president of the NFU. A fantastic achievement. I hope that the sun comes out soon and spring finally arrives. In the meantime please can Scotland beat Ireland in Dublin this weekend to cheer us all up a little bit!

How to improve yield and quality of Oats? Bioscence Independent trials at loddington over 4 years helped to provide very valuable data, Oats showed an average yield increase of 12%. The Bioscence approach helped increase natural soil biology and improved plant root mass. Every 1cm deeper your roots go, you access 130 tons of soil across 1/ha, therefore improving plant feeding, leading to better yield, milling quality, plant health and stress reduction. We achieved these results and still managed to reduce nitrogen by 10%. On farm trials over many years have also shown yield increases of 10-20%. Consistent improvements in bushel weights were noted, helping to meet market demands and improve yield. Franklin Soil Fertility liquid bio stimulant can easily be applied with other crop treatments, is tank mixable, safe and simple to use.

• Improved root mass • Better plant feeding • Improved biology • 12% increase yield • Improved milling quality • 10% less nitrogen • £57/ha improved margin (based on £112/ton selling price)

Talking......... Arable

March 4th 2018

Colin Mitchell is farm manager at Meikleour Estate near Blairgowrie in Perthshire. The soils range from light sand and gravel to some heavy, wet, north facing clay loams with 400 acres of fertile silty sand. Cropping covers 2200 acres and includes winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, spring barley and oats, seed and ware potatoes, carrots and vining peas. Well, that wasn’t as bad as it could have been, the “Beast from the East” has been and gone! We’ve actually got off relatively lightly in East Perthshire, with areas to the South and West catching most of the snow. In total I would estimate we had about 6” of snow but the wind has blown it all into hollows of fields and onto the roads. The local roads are kept quite clear because the depot that the gritters operate out of is only 4 miles away therefore most of the gritter fleet pass our road end. It was certainly not as straightforward for a lot of people though with plenty of farmers getting out and helping to clear roads to get emergency services through. This type of weather also shows up the fragility of the supply chain from farm to consumer (with shops running out of bread and milk). In our own case we were loading wheat and oats on Monday and Tuesday and the later lorries were just going to go home and park up until the weather got better. I realise that most of the produce we sell will keep if it’s not picked up and it must be a blow for dairy farmers when they have to dump milk. I’ve not yet heard of any livestock losses but I fear that with the wind and snow in the ENGINEERING SERVICES hills there are bound to be some. It’s not the first time the country has been hit byMOBILE extreme weather and it certainly won’t be the last but how much investment in road clearing equipment does it justify when it occurs for a week every 5 years or so? Talking......... Organic

March 6th 2018

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. Well, what a month. “The Beast from the East” was horrific. I have not seen drifting like that for a long while. We seem to have come out of it better than some and worse than others. Travelling around with the feeder wagon became impossible, so cattle were fed using the bedding machine. Digging our way into the hen shed was pretty bleak, and the inevitable problems of frozen pipes which will have plagued anyone with stock. Fortunately, the power stayed on for us most of the time. Now it’s flooding, travelling over wet ground to feed sheep and the sad inevitability of picking up dead stock for some who have been hit hard in other areas. We have fared quite well, however I know that many won’t be so fortunate. Sunday afternoon was spent digging out the hen shed with the JCB so we could get the egg wagon in. Chippindales needed the eggs, we were running out of room in the egg store and more worryingly we were running out of egg packaging! Pre snow we were busy Johnes testing the cows and giving them their booster vaccine against clostridial disease. Post snow I am busy assessing how much silage we have left. Now we are feeding sheep it’s amazing how quickly it disappears. I am trying to sell stock whilst praying for an early spring. We are always looking at opportunities for the future. Seeing what we could invest in, what would work well within the existing business, what could improve our profitability? However, at present it’s hard to know whether to push on with investment projects or whether to sit tight and lay low for a while until the Brexit storm has passed. The more information we receive the less certainty I feel for the immediate future. Direct payments are set to decrease and the stewardship element will take centre stage. I don’t have a problem with that in principle, however it’s the cross over period and the nature and openness of the stewardship scheme that concerns me. Personally I want to see stewardship schemes open to all. Schemes that are competitive based on existing features and biodiversity see the good farms getting better, and the farms that currently have a poor environmental record unable to improve and get in the loop. A friend of mine is director of a large estate and we recently went on a farm tour around some of the holding. You can see all the investment that has and continues to go into the business, not just buildings, stock and machinery, but the infrastructure; roads, bridges, property. Buyer of Steel and Non Ferrous Metals The investment required to maintain everything is significant, but it’s COLLECTION SERVICE AVAILABLE all relative to the size of the farm. Barry Meeke farms 190 acres (150 owned) in partnership with brother Philip, near Dromara, County Down, Northern Ireland. They manage a mixed farm including pedigree British Friesian cows, breeding replacements, finished cattle and continental crosses being either sold as replacement suckler heifers or as finished stock. As I haven’t been feeling well this last couple of days I have had plenty of time to think, primarily as to how thankful I am to be well in general. I don’t be sick for too long before I sympathise with those who are permanently not well, I don’t know how they mentally cope and hope not to find out. As I have been watching some sport I can’t help but notice the attitude of some of the commentators as the bird’s eye view gives them the ability to be unnecessarily critical, especially of the ‘underdog’. At the end of the day all of these people are extremely talented to reach tv standard competitors. So I wonder if some of the commentators had a go, how would they get on? This in turn reminds me of farming as how if a standard hasn’t been reached it can be frowned upon and quite often if the critics were let at it the outcome could be interesting. In general, the best problem solvers have been there and got the t-shirt. On Monday we got some more straw baled, some slurry ploughed in and a little (not enough) hedge cutting done. This felt good to be out in the fields, but then of course ‘the beast appeared’ and boy he was rough as the intense wind left many milking parlours big time frozen as well as most drinkers. With one late milking, a steep learning curve and a 1000 litre cube we came through it quite well with very little yield lost, but our energy levels are well burnt out. It was a big relief to see the milk tanker in the yard as we were contemplating having to dump the milk. Getting the lorry in was down to everybody in the area doing their bit along with a fair bit of diesel burnt and a cutting edge on the JCB bucket that you could shave on. This has all delayed batching up calves to make room, so there will be a few busy days to get back on track and possibly rested a little. It is always noticeable that if the cows are housed a month early how they show signs of needing outside a month earlier, with the best will in the world and plenty of comfort indoors there is still the need to be outside for some cows to aid survival. I would hope that another 6 weeks would maybe see some out at least. After a very dodgy milk recording in the middle of the snow, our long awaited first pregnancy diagnosis results are due which I hope will be encouraging but time will tell.

VITAL TO EMBRACE CHANGE FOR FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY

There is much change to come within global agriculture and farmers are being strongly advised to embrace these changes to ensure their business is sustainable for future generations. Issues including Brexit, climate change, soil depletion, water shortage, pollution and food security all bring new challenges to farming businesses and it is vital farmers are prepared and adapt accordingly. “Landowners in the UK need to be particularly mindful of the changes to BPS payments and the shift to environmental benefits,” explains Tracey Jackson, H&H Land and Property Associate who recently attended the Oxford Farming Conference and believes people should be planning their business to withstand a shift in subsidy payments. “Although no specific details are available, the message is clear – farmers can no longer depend on payments for land ownership alone.” “The management of the land, and what it is used for, will be pivotal for future support. There is an urgent need to protect the environment and this is going to be reflected in the UK’s emerging policy to shift payments from landownership to providing environmental benefits.” “The message of the 2018 Oxford Farming Conference was positive however the key theme was around Embracing Change, and this perfectly sums up the mindset needed to sustain and build a future profitable business,” says Tracey. “Technological and biological advances can assist in improving production and reducing inputs and there is much research and development being done in these fields. It is important farmers keep

afoot of these developments and adopt new practices where appropriate. Financial support is available north and south of the border through various support schemes and grants – for which H&H Land and Property can assist with grant applications” “The conference also emphasised the need for collaboration and working together to share ideas and best practice, both farm to farm and between farmers, scientists and environmentalists. I want to stress this – I feel farmers can benefit hugely from working with others and currently may not be maximising on these resources. Today’s farmers have the incredible resource of the internet, which opens up many valuable learning and networking opportunities not available to previous generations. I want to encourage farmers to get on line, get involved in webinars, research their industry and connect with innovative and inspiring individuals who will help them succeed.” “Also, let’s work, as an industry, to encourage public support for agriculture. There is a real desire from the general public to reconnect with where their food comes from and farmers should welcome this and engage with their consumers – which will lead to a better relationship with their consumer and help build loyalty to British products. Open Farm Sunday offers an ideal starting point for this.” “What was evident at the conference, was that UK agriculture has the potential for an amazing future. We have some of the best farmers in the world and are the envy of many in areas such as research, welfare, productivity and environmental issues. We have a tremendous base on which to build.”
