PARTNERS IN HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® have joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a researchbased physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a twelve-week small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. It fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their regular daily activities. • • • •

Free, 12-week Y membership. Two 75-minute classes each week. Small group setting (6-8 participants) Full access to the YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services.

WHY OUR MEMBERS LOVE THE BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA TESTIMONIALS “When my ten year old son missed 40 days of school last year due to his asthma, his doctor prescribed cardio exercise as a way to strengthen his lungs. In the nine months since we joined the Y, my son and I have come to the Y almost every day to get healthy. What a difference the Y has made in our lives as AJ has only missed two days of school since then, and I have not had to worry about missing a day of work to care for him. The Y’s low pressure workout environment made me feel welcome and my path back to recovery from a recent surgery was easier because I was more fit from working out with AJ. Best of all, I love that the Y made a family membership affordable. Now all five members of my family have an opportunity to live healthy.” — Nancy and AJ Berkeley Heights YMCA members

“LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. I am a breast cancer survivor. During one of our group sessions we did an art project where I demonstrated the impact of the free, 12-week program on my life. #1 is my life before cancer – happy, contented. #2 shows how I felt when I was diagnosed - nervous and concern about the outcome. #3 is when I was tentative but wanted to get back into life. #4 is when I found LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA and started exercising for the first time in a small group community with caring Y trainers who understood my weakness. And I was surrounded by a group of survivors who supported my plan for wellness. I am blossoming again. I have found a true partner in my healing!” — Anonymous, Berkeley Heights YMCA participant

UPCOMING EVENTS FRIDAY NIGHT OUT We host special evenings where parents can enjoy a relaxing night in at home, an adult’s night out, or just take care of a few errands, while their children are entertained at our Y. We begin with a family style dinner of pizza and juice/water. After dinner, we relax and enjoy a movie that is projected on the big screen. To conclude the night, staff will lead structured games and supervise free play. All are welcome. Limited to 25 children, so act fast. Fee for this event.
