Birth in Munich, Germany

NEUE UFER DORNUMERSIEL Once a lovely fisherman‘s village, where even islanders came over, the local spirit got lost in the 1960s, when the old harbour was filled up, the curved dike line was straightened and moved more than 1000 meters into the sea. As a result, the inhabitants lost their identity and the tourists didn‘t feel attracted as they used to be. The massive topological movement of the last century calls for a courageous action in three steps: The reconstruction of the lost ambient quality, the multi-phase insert of an urban inlay from the top and the creation of regional consciousness from the bottom. A new spatial density can create attraction points

for new locals and tourists, stopping the rural exodus and urbanisation that is dominating not only the northern part of Germany. The design docks at the old harbour – the former heart of the place. It connects the areal of the touristy cost side with the interior of the country. The centrepiece creates a new harbour which stands in a dialogue with the old one, where a market place is functioned as social and areal connection piece between locals and tourists. The design is more seen as a guideline (use of bricks, grids, heights etc.) rather than a pre-defined structure, in which the inhabitants can can develop individual houses.

BILDUNGSHAUS WOLFSBURG with SEP Architekten, NSP Landschaftsarchitektur Mention after 2. Phase in open competition. The given task was to design a "prototypical" educational building, containing a public library, a secondary school and a community college. The design starts in the programmatic analysis: We started rearranging spaces and functions not by actor (library, school, etc.), but by action (reading, drawing, communicating, etc.). Like three-dimensional topographic lines the building evolves around the shared central market place. Ramps and an d curves emphasise the idea the horizontal moving in a landscape, where the dynamics combine the

underground library and the school/administration levels above, opening the marketplace towards the park. The interlocking of building, city and landscape is equal to the spacial interlocking of program: All the function are seen as zones, overlapping parts as synergetic spaces. The "Creative tower" is the programmatic centre of the complex in the "making", where handcraft, scientific experimentation, music, etc.) are placed in order to the functions needed around it. Library and School are also vertically interlocked, obtaining the atmospherical value of books and intimacy in the higher levels with direct vertical connection.

D-LINE MEMORIAL with Johanna Just Design proposal for an abandoned subway station in Hanover. Since its completion in the 60's the station never went into operation because of miscalculation. It's bare but well conserved concrete structure, offers a perfect starting situation for our design proposal: As a memorial and exhibition space for architectonical misplannings a steely pathway will be installed, hanging from the ceiling without touching the raw concrete structure, taking the directions of the planned subway routes. The flying roof is only present during the opening times on the square and can be used as a bench or urban stage. when closed.

DRAWING In my later semesters I had the urge of seeing something "built". Taking a metal sculpture course was my consequence. My design idea was to "sketch", but instead of paper, in space. I started with three "lines", in form of steel wires, that described spacial curves reacting to each other, until giving a tense figure. Like on paper, the "sketch" had to become a drawing: Thin, bent steel profiles were welded at their ends replacing the main lines, and used to densify in between. The sculptural progress in 1:1 scale, where no simulation has to be used in the design process, was a great experience.

SPACIAL NETWORK with Johanna Just Temporary living project in Antwerp: The area in Antwerp's Schipperskwartier will change soon due to gentrification, prostitution will be stopped and art and culture are getting supported: With a big urbanistic master-plan the quarter will get massively densified in the next 5 to 10 years. In the transition time, a building gap on Falconplein could serve as an interesting field for spatial and sociological experiments. Our temporary design is subdivided into two different aspects: A wooden topography is linking the inner yard and the street,

creating various zones with different qualities for urban gardening, concerts or markets. As a common ground the gap gets programmatically emphasised. A numeninspired netting structure is stretched above it between the two neighbouring buildings, offering accommodation for travellers in suspended cocoons, that provide an interconnected, but still private space. Where mass accommodation normally uses an architecture dominated by spatial isolation and a seriality of detached room cells, in our design it's the

exact opposite: It's the community that influences the whole structure. Every inhabitant will determine the shape of the whole structure with his weight, walk and behaviour. The abandoned warehouse on the right is programmatically integrated in the concept for facilities. Showers, lockers and toilets are seen as prefabricated and reusable modules. The design was essentially developed by using parametric modelling tools as Grasshopper and Kangaroo in Rhino. At the same time it was necessary to control the cad-progress by building several work models in elastic fabric.

A public theatre should be open and inviting on the one, closed and reserved on the other side: The answer is spatial flexibility. The slewable walls in the modular construction create an extroverted architecture, allowing differentiated situations for stage, bar, workshop, etc. The Velcro surface in their inside hosts fabric remnants for the crafting of puppets and costumes, creating an exciting inside-out effect when flipped. Special attention was given to a transportable and affordable construction, that integrates design aspects as assembly and dismantling process.
