Letter from the editor My earliest memories of exercise stem from my school days in England when I was 10. Every week during winter we were forced to complete a three-mile cross country run in the woods around the school. It was a cold, wet and windy experience every time but the routine of daily exercise was engrained in my youth as an important and necessary part of life. Now, over 20 years later in Beijing, I would pay thousands of RMB to be able to regularly run through those leafy paths. There are many excuses to put off exercise in Beijing – but I’ve found that with some simple planning and prioritization I’ve managed to squeeze it all in. As a result I’m fitter than I have ever been in my life and have formed closer bonds with my colleagues. I’ve also met many interesting people through running groups and playing other sports in town. As an internet start-up CEO I typically have a tight schedule that can become quite unpredictable. So to keep me on track I use three simple techniques: having a clear goal or event I regularly train towards, making sure to involve others in this plan and always setting aside a specific time each day to exercise. A few years ago when I trained with about 20 of my employees for the 2008 Beijing Marathon, we had the goal set six months ahead of the October start date and scheduled time for three training runs a week. Everyone would do two runs in their own time during the week and we would meet for a long run most Sundays over the weeks prior to the event. This routine helped us bond as a team and also inspired everyone to realize how they could achieve something they thought of as “impossible” in just six months. Nowadays I tend to exercise first thing in the morning. I’ve found that making exercise super convenient is the key to sticking to a schedule and I’m fortunate to have a gym downstairs from my apartment. I hope that through this collection of articles and interviews of people passionate about sport and exercise everyone can find a space in your 2012 New Year resolutions for exercise. I promise it will be one of the best decisions you can make for the year.

Adrian Li is a British-born Chinese with a degree in Economics from Cambridge University. After working for JPMorgan he came to Beijing in 2006 and sold his first company, Idapted, and is now CEO and co-founder of airizu.com, a short term rental website for private accommodations. Agenda spoke with Adrian and he gave some insight on how he thinks his sports training has helped him get ahead in business. Interview by Joana Melo, photo by Judy Zhou

Have you always been into sports? I had exercise instilled in me in the early days of my education in England. While at school I had the opportunity to participate in many sports, particularly Judo, which I competed in for London in the UK University Nationals and won gold for the sub 63KG category. But after graduating I found it more difficult to schedule team sports versus individual sports such as running, so I’ve gradually gotten into endurance sports. I’ve since completed five marathons – a 70.3 Half Ironman and several Olympic distance triathlons.

aspects of my business and oftentimes some of my best ideas come from a three hour run around Chaoyang Park. It’s probably not surprising then that sport has crossed into many aspects of my personal life. I’m running the Hong Kong marathon this year with four of my good friends and my preferred holidays usually involve snowboarding, scuba diving or mountain climbing. Do you find that people bond differently over sports? I think people can bond over sports in the same way as any shared interest. However sports can have the added benefit of people working together towards a shared goal, while also contributing to their overall health. When I trained for my 2009 Hainan 70.3 Ironman I did so with a former colleague who, to this day, I share a special bond with because of the painful training that we had to endure together.

How have sports been a vital part of your professional life, and how has that crossed over into your personal life? I’ve always found sports and exercise to be a key part of my professional and personal life. In my business, exercise has been a great way to bond with my team. The process of training and working together in a sports context is just as powerful What are the top five professional things as any teambuilding exercise and has the added you’ve learned from doing sports? ning and coordination, especially as we were flying in from five different countries for the challenge. We shared equipment lists, training plans, progress and travel schedules to ensure we arrived totally prepared for the climb – as a result we had a 100% summit success, versus the park average of around 30 percent. In business, you need key performance indicators (KPIs) to know how your business is performing – exercise training needs similar indicators to know how you are improving. I’m fanatical about measuring my run training. I log all my runs using Run Keeper on my iPhone and track my speed, cadence and heart rate using a polar watch and footpod. Finally, as in business, some sports are dependent on the functions of a complete team and its commitment to success. What are the best sports for aspiring business people, especially if they want to connect with people? Golf has often been cited as a great business sports because it requires you to make many decisions over the course of a four-hour, 18-hole game. It also tests how people deal with frustrations – hitting a bad shot can reflect on how one does business. Taking up golf may be a worthwhile investment if you can afford the time. On the whole I’ve found that many successful business people also take the time to do some kind of sport or exercise. I think this is because they apply their work ethic and thirst for success to not only their business, but to all aspects of their lives. So I think it is best to do whichever sport you’re drawn to – you’re bound to meet people. What are your favorite entrepreneurial books? My favorite entrepreneurial books include The Rockerfeller Habits by Verne Harnish, which talks about how to set strategy and align your organization to it; Switch by Chip Heath which discusses how to create organizational change; and most recently, Steve Job’s biography.

He jokingly describes himself as a Swedish guy who wears pink shorts for a living and never fails to mention that he’s the General Manager at Heyrobics International, and the founder of Heyrobics China. We spoke with him about how he’s managed to bring this unique form of exercise to China and the business of fitness.

Funkmaster Flex

Linus Holmsäter, GM at Heyrobics International, shows us some easy ways to get fit Interview by Jennifer Thomé, photo by Sui

What is Heyrobics and how does it benefit people psychologically and physically? Heyrobics is a set of movements combined with music, and it follows the Heyrobics Intensity Curve into a group exercise. In the group exercise, we’re constantly shifting muscle groups, making the training more effective for both improving heart capacity and providing a fullbody exercise. As for the psychological benefits, I really think this is why people come to Heyrobics. Our classes can be done by anything from ten to 1,000 people at once, so it’s easy to blend in and socialize. We even did a class in Tiananmen Square for almost 30,000 people one time. It’s ok not to be the fittest one in the room – people smile and encourage each other no matter what. He was a pentathlon and fencing athlete in Sweden, competing for a spot in the Swedish Olympic Team when he injured his back. Doctors told him to wait and rest, and he did so for almost two years, barely being able to walk. When he realized he was not recovering, he did the opposite – designed a set of active rehab exercises, and did them with music to make it less boring. Spotlight Kickstart These high kicks train glutes, calves, and to some extent the lower back. This is a great combined cardio and agility exercise for the hamstrings.

Active Thigh Agility This move stretches the inner thigh and gives strength training to thighs at same time. Make sure to keep your chest up and good posture to avoid putting stress on the back. Hold for two to six seconds per side for agility, 20 to 30 seconds for a stretch.

Side Superman This is a great full-body exercise, which trains the full side, from ankles, outer thighs, side abdominals, and back, all the way through the shoulders and triceps. You can either do it statically, like in this picture, or raise yourself from lying on your side. If it’s too tough, stand on your knees instead of your feet.

AGENDA

Low Running Pushups This is running, but trains the whole body. Run with your legs kicking towards butt, and alternate between extending and contracting arms.

Hunter’s Rest We normally do this in Heyrobics, but you can do it in office too. The Hunter’s Rest is a static exercise for the glutes, thighs, calves, and it works the core, too. Dig your heels into ground, stick your butt out, and try to keep your chest up.

Spotlight When Xu Haifeng won China’s first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Shooting event at the 1984 Olympic Summer Games, China barely registered on the worl’d athletic map. But today, with the more recent international successes of athletes like Yao Ming, Li Na and Liu Xiang, and the promise of another strong medal count at this summer’s Olympic Games – China can now be considered a bona fide international sports powerhouse. Here is a quick guide to some of the most notable and successful athletes in the history of Chinese sports.

Cheat Sheet: Chinese athletes

Who’s-who in China’s sports scene Text by Joana Melo

Deng Yaping 邓亚萍 Deng started playing table tennis at the age of five and four years later she had already won the provincial junior – no one has topped her since. Between 1989 and 1997 she won six World Championships and four Olympic Gold medals and by the time she retired at 24,she had more titles than any other player in any other sport. Rather than resting on her laurels after retiring she enrolled in Tsinghua University, majored in English, and went on to study at Cambridge University. Deng acted as a spokeswoman for the Paralympics and as Deputy Director of the Olympic Village Department for the organizing group in the 2008 Olympics. Ding Junhui 丁俊晖 Ding Jinghui rose to fame in 2002 at the age of 15 when he became the youngest player ever to win the Asian Under21 Snooker Championship and has gone on to become the most successful player in the

history of the sport. He turned professional in 2003 but his biggest breakthrough happened in the 2005 China Open where he defeated the then indomitable Stephen Hendry… before he was even 20. By the time he was 24 Ding was estimated to have pocketed about RMB 6.9 million and brought about a dramatic rise in the popularity of snooker in China in recent years. Guo Jingjing 郭晶晶This Hebei native (pictured right) started diving when she was six and entered her first competition a year later in 1988. She competed in her first Olympics at the tender age of 15, and went on to compete in three more Olympics, winning more medals than any other female diver in history before retiring in 2011. Throughout her career, her success and natural beauty made her a regular in the gossip columns and such popularity led to lucrative endorsement contracts with

McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Toshiba and Li-Ning, leading to her expulsion from the national team for excessive commercial activities at one point (she was eventually allowed back on the team after promising to pay more attention to diving and less to the paparazzi). Li Na 李娜 Li Na was born in 1982 and was influenced by her father, a professional badminton player, to follow in his footsteps, but was later convinced by her coach to change to tennis – a decision that would change her life forever. In 1997 she joined China’s National Tennis Team and turned pro two years later. Li was the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam Title final at the 2011 Australian Open and a also became the first to ever win a Grand Slam in singles at the 2011 French Open – the pinnacle of her career so far. Last year Li was ranked seventh in the world and is on her way to become the world’s second highest earning female.

the Olympic gold for the Men’s 110m hurdles in 2004 in Athens – the first ever for an Asian male athlete – and is also the first Chinese to have a “triple crown” by being a World Record Holder (set in 2006), a World Champion (in 2007) and an Olympic Champion. In the run-up to the 2008 Olympics Liu’s face was plastered across just about every billboard in China and earned upwards of USD 10.2 million dollars in endorsement deals in 2007. Although his career suffered a setback when an injury forced him to withdraw from the 2008 Olympics, he is still estimated to have doubled his value in 2010 with more endorsement contracts, including a lucrative deal with Visa. Wang Meng 王 Wang Meng (pictured on p18) is one of the fastest short distance speed skaters in the world. Born in 1985 she first set foot on the ice at the age of nine and was later

Li Ning 李宁 The “Prince of Gymnastics” was selected to the national team in 1980 and won six medals in the 1984 Olympic Games, including three gold medals. By the time he retired in 1988 Li had 14 titles under his belt and he also had the honor of lighting the Olympic flame at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nowadays Li Ning is best known for his eponymous sportswear company that has pursued endorsement contracts with both domestic and foreign athletes. Lin Dan 林丹 Born in Fujian “Super Dan” chose to play badminton at the age of five and made it into China’s National team when he was 18.Only 10 years later he had completed the “Super Grand Slam” – the first and only player far to achieve such a feat to date. Lin has signed ten endorsement deals to date, including lucrative contracts with Gillete and Red Bull, and in 2010 alone earned a handsome sum of RMB 12 million. Liu Xiang 刘翔 This Shanghai-born athlete (pictured on p20) has been running to victory ever since he was 15. Liu shot to fame after winning

crowned Overall World Champion in her field in 2008 and 2009. Wang is also the most decorated Chinese Winter Olympic athlete, having won four golds, a silver and a bronze medal and has two world records. Wang got herself in hot water last June after getting into a brawl with her team manager after a night of drinking and was subsequently expelled from the National Team and from all national and international competitions – despite being reinstated after a public apology this debacle is said to have cost her around RMB 10.4 million in earnings for the year. Xu Haifeng 许海峰 Despite having no professional training whatsoever, Xu Haifeng has the distinction of being China’s first-ever Olympic Gold medalist for his victory in the Men’s 50m Air Pistol event in the 1984 Olympics. In 1982 he joined the Anhui provincial shooting team and two years later got a spot on the national team

before winning the gold medal. Although he didn’t go on to win any more Olympic medals, Xu was honored twice by being a torchbearer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and in the 1990 Asian Games. Since retiring in 1994 Xu has turned to coaching and was chosen to be the coach of the 1994 and 2001 National Shooting Team. Yao Ming 姚明 Born in 1980, Yao Ming started playing for the Shanghai Sharks as a teenager and was selected by the Houston Rockets as the first pick for the 2002 NBA Draft and went on to play in multiple NBA All-Star games and was named to the All-NBA Team five times before retiring last year due to a chronic foot injury. Yao’s NBA success has made paid off for his pocketbook as well – his endorsement deals include Reebok, China Unicom, Visa and McDonald’s and his total fortune was estimated at around USD 34 million in 2011.

Today, as Beijing’s only registered Yoga Alliance 500 hour Yoga Teacher, she’ll happily tell you that no other job has given her as much job satisfaction as teaching yoga – primarily because it enables people to feel better about themselves and in turn, act kinder to those around them.

to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early death. Trust me – as an ex-corporate lawyer, I know what I’m talking about! Find physical activities that you like and stick to them. Sweat every day. Make time to do nothing. No book, no DVD, no iPad, no to-do list. And look up NASA’s list on air filtering plants on Wikipedia and put them in your home. The hard part is doing what we already know is good for us. We all have 24 hours in a day – make the time. Prioritize it. Be disciplined about it. What are your favorite places to practice and meditate in Beijing? I like to practice and meditate in quiet spaces with no distractions. So usually this means my own yoga room at home where there’s nothing on the walls, no furniture, just a window with plants and wooden floor boards. But meditation is more about your headspace than your physical location. So the best

place for meditation can be wherever you are when you’re most stressed. It could be in your office just after your boss has yelled at you. Instead of crying in the toilet cubicle, meditate! A minute meditating at your desk will do you far more good than bottling it up for another six months until you get time off to go on a retreat. Meditation is a state of mind. You don’t need to be on a mountaintop in Nepal. What about food? Where do you like to eat? My favorite place to eat is my own kitchen. Guaranteed fresh produce, no MSG, low in fat, sugar, salt, made with love and care, and there’s never anyone smoking at the next table. That being said, I love the veggie burgers at The Veggie Table, the pizza margherita at La Pizza, and I really like the jiucaihe at Dongbeiren. Visit yonniefung.com for more info.

59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot by Richard Wiseman Richard Wiseman has long been troubled by the realization that the self-help industry often promotes exercises that destroy motivation, damage relationships, and reduce creativity: the opposite of everything it promises. In 59 Seconds, he fights back, bringing together the diverse scientific advice that can help you change your life in under a minute, and guides you toward becoming more decisive, more imaginative, more engaged, and altogether more happy. From mood to memory, persuasion to procrastination, resilience to relationships, Wiseman outlines the research supporting the new science of “rapid change” and, with clarity and infectious enthusiasm, describes how these quirky, sometimes counterintuitive techniques can be effortlessly incorporated into your everyday life. Or, as he likes to say: “Think a little, change a lot.”

My Perfect Day

Sarah Keenlyside, founder and CEO of Bespoke Beijing, explores the modern offerings of ancient Beijing Text by Sarah Keenlyside, photo by Sui

“On a perfect day, the sky would have to be clean so I can go for a leisurely stroll around Houhai Lake, or perhaps a run if I was feeling really energetic. I probably should opt for a run, since it will erase any guilt I might feel about all of the amazing things I am planning to eat today. Houhai, pre-9am, is a wonderful place to remind yourself that you live in a historic city, especially when you reach the tip of Shichahai and you can look right across the lake, beyond the pavilions and weeping willows and onto the city. After that I would head straight to the Lama Temple. I know it’s touristy but it still gives me an overwhelming sense of calm every time I visit, and I love the smell of incense that fills the area. Now that I’ve found my inner calm, I head for the hustle and bustle of Sanlitun for lunch with friends at Hatsune. I’ve been going to Hatsune for years, but I still can’t get enough of those delicious sushi rolls! After lunch retreat to ESPA at the Peninsula for an hour or two. Easily the best spa in Beijing, it’s gorgeously decked out, and the staff are always so lovely. I’d go for the Jade Stone Massage, which includes an express facial. Nightfall is just around the corner, so I head to my favorite spot in the city: Jingshan Park.

40

AGENDA

I love this park on a Sunday morning, when it’s a real feast for the senses and a great way to feel connected to local Beijingers. But I love it even more at Sundown, when the tourists have all left and the birds are circling the eaves of the pavilions. I would walk right to the little temple at the top of Coal Hill and spend a good 45 minutes just admiring the city from all the different angles. There are so few places in Beijing where you can close your eyes and imagine everything as it must have been a couple of hundred years ago, and this is one of them. I then walk up Di’anmen to Nanluoguxiang, where I pop into the secret boutique Wu Hao and buy myself an outfit for dinner, or stop in at Cambulac, another well kept secret, for a glass of wine. Naturally, dinner on a perfect day in Beijing would be at TRB – Temple Restaurant Beijing. I’d arrive by rickshaw, since that’s the closest thing to a horse and carriage, and enjoy a three-course meal, the exceptional service, and the pretty surroundings. Not to mention the lavish and seemingly never-ending parade of petit fours. If I could choose which bed I slept in that night, it would definitely be the one in the penthouse of The Opposite House, or perhaps in a room at The China Club. That being said, I might be tempted to pinch some of the bathroom accessories there, but I’ll resist!”
