Steve Klinker, Dugan & Meyers LLC

Fifty years ago this year, AGC Ohio was formed. We are truly indebted to those people and companies who had the vision to start AGC Ohio back in 1970. Many of these companies are still involved today, 50 years later, and it is truly a testament to both them and AGC as an organization. During the last 50 years our industry and the organization has seen many ups and downs. As I write this message, AGC Ohio and its members are dealing with an unprecedented challenge, the COVID-19 Pandemic. AGC is stepping up in multiple ways to meet this challenge with federal and state advocacy for contractors, member COVID-19 surveys measuring the effect of the pandemic, safety materials, jobsite social distancing plans, and contractual resources just to name a few. Now more than ever our organization is needed.

Beyond COVID-19, AGC Ohio is working through building trade negotiations, assisting with workforce development through programs such as IBuildAmerica-Ohio and our scholarship program, pushing for modifications to Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) documents, the State OFCC computer programs and the Ohio EDGE Program. We also hope to move forward with issues such as Workforce Development, Collaboration, PR Marketing, and Funding Diversification as brought up in our recent Strategic Plan.

I mentioned at our convention that I was first introduced to AGC 50 years ago this year having received a scholarship from an AGC Indiana affiliate. It was incredibly helpful for a young college student paying his way through college, and I am thankful for all of you in AGC of Ohio who year after year give their support for scholarships. They do make a difference. I am honored to be AGC’s 2020 President.

Finally, and most importantly, I would like to thank outgoing president Tom Muraski of Kokosing Industrial for his hard work and leadership over the past year. Tom has been a part of AGC for many years, and his commitment and loyalty to the organization is much appreciated. We hope to have his involvement for years to come. Many thanks Tom!

On March 9, 1970, three visionaries brought together Ohio’s fragmented building industry groups to form what we now know as the AGC of Ohio. Originally named the Ohio Building Chapter (so as not confuse between the Ohio Contractors Association (a-chartered AGC highway chapter). Thomas C. Fitzpatrick (Columbus), Grant Hesser (Cincinnati), and Bill Ferris (Cleveland) met with AGC of America representatives to sign the Charter that created the AGC Chapter. For many years, individual cities throughout Ohio had established building associations primarily for the purpose of collective bargaining. During this early period, legislative activity and governmental impact upon construction companies was growing by leaps and bounds. These three individuals and their respective organizations bound together to represent the vertical building industry in Ohio’s halls of government. Back in the 70’s the Ohio Building Chapter struggled. Far from the organization it is today, members were scarce, and funding was always difficult. Convincing the independent building groups around Ohio to affiliate was difficult in itself. Necessity eventually won out as all major city building organizations affiliated with the Ohio Building Chapter (OBC). The OBC name was dropped in the late 1980’s and became formally known as the AGC of Ohio. Over the past 50 years AGC of Ohio has established itself as a premier construction association in Ohio’s Legislature and corridors of administrative state government agencies. In this issue, please pay particular attention to the listed longterm members. Through good years and lien years, many companies maintained an active status in the association. This was recognition that AGC’s role in Ohio had become vital to the interests of the Building Industry in Ohio. Congratulations to the AGC of Ohio for fifty years of service to Ohio’s construction companies.

Join your fellow AGC members in warm and sunny Aruba from March 6-12, 2021 for the annual AGC of Ohio Convention. The group will be staying at the Renaissance Ocean Suites. The annual convention provides contractors the opportunity to build business relationships with other contractors from all over the state of Ohio. In addition, business sessions are held each weekday morning that address topical issues for the Ohio commercial construction industry.

More information and registration materials will be posted this fall on the AGC of Ohio website, www.agcohio.com. 5

Rudolph Libbe Inc. is proud to be a founding member of the AGC of Ohio, now passing 50 years in service to the industry. We are a committed partner, dedicated to upholding the core AGC principles of skill, responsibility and integrity.

The AGC Cleveland Chapter was formed in 1921, while CEA was formed in 1916 and each has faithfully advocated member interests over the many years since. With public policy, though, little could be achieved without our relationship with the AGC of Ohio. Many years before AGC of Ohio's founding, contractors recognized the need for a unified voice in the state capital.

Allied Construction Industries is very proud to house the Cincinnati Division of Ohio AGC. AGC members across the State and in Cincinnati receive so much value for their membership that includes group buying power programs, educational programs, statewide committees and advocacy on behalf of the industry. AGC is the largest commercial construction association in Ohio that works to ensure that State Legislators understand our industry and AGC staff lobby to protect the rights of contractors. It’s wonderful to be part of a well-respected, professional organization that represents the best contractors in the state. Terry Phillips, ACI

At last, our forebears successfully addressed this need when the Ohio Council of AGC Building Chapters (an informal legislative affiliation) formally requested and obtained chapter status from the Associated General Contractors of America. Since its beginning, AGC of Ohio has been a critical ally in representing contractor interests statewide. Though certain interests vary from city to city, quality contractors have always wanted the same thing: a level playing field on which to compete through skill, hard work and fair dealing. As AGC of Ohio begins its second 50 years, we are confident that it will continue advocating for just that. Tim Linville, CEA

The AGC of Ohio is the main trade association in Ohio where the employees as lobbyists understand the challenges of today's industry and leads efforts to secure favorable economic and regulatory outcomes. Randy Fox West Central Ohio AGC

In addition, the AGC of Ohio website, www.agcohio.com, is an informational resource for industry issues and news, as well as AGC of Ohio efforts, programs and events. AGC of Ohio also sends informative bulletins and updates on a variety of constructionrelated topics.

AGC of Ohio’s Pinnacle Award for Lifetime Achievement distinguishes those that remain active in AGC of Ohio long after serving a direct leadership role. Only four have been presented to date.

SPECIAL EVENTS Four major annual events bring a large number of contractors from all over Ohio together: AGC of Ohio’s annual convention, which usually takes place in a warm, exotic locale; the Build Ohio Celebration that honors the accomplishments of the commercial construction industry and recognizes excellence in construction; a Safety Luncheon that honors companies’ safety achievements; and a golf outing that benefits the AGC of Ohio Scholarship Fund.

BUSINESS RESOURCES AGC provides wide variety of resources to assist in companies’ day-to-day business and address specific construction issues as they arise. Some include labor law posters, Project Delivery Systems Guide, construction-related publications, legal and regulatory information, etc. AGC of Ohio has negotiated special discounts and services with select member benefit companies, including: CareWorks; CareWorksComp; Enterprise; GM Fleet; National Purchasing Partners; Ohio Construction Connection. Many other discount programs are available through AGC of America.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION PROGRAM Administered by CareWorksComp, the AGC of Ohio Group Workers’ Compensation Program saves companies a significant amount of money on their workers’ compensation premiums. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT & SCHOLARSHIPS AGC members and staff work with government entities, education facilities, career centers and the public to educate them about the industry, promote construction careers, and improve its image.

EDUCATION Through nationally developed programs delivered directly by AGC of America to those offered through AGC’s network of chapters and member firms, AGC’s education programs and training resources address core topics essential to any construction professional and company

AGC of Ohio, in conjunction with the other AGC-affiliated associations across Ohio, created the IBuildAmerica-Ohio campaign. The initiative promotes the construction industry, and its accompanying website, www.ibuildamerica-ohio.com, serves as a one-stop-shop for information about construction careers and pathways into the industry.

PROJECT DELIVERY SYSTEMS AGC of Ohio addresses issues related to methods of construction. The association works with state officials on construction documents and contracting and with other construction associations on issues of mutual concern.

AGC of Ohio has an extensive scholarship program where the association, divisions and members sponsor scholarships under the auspices of the AGC of Ohio Education Foundation. At least 30 scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing construction degrees.

SAFETY AGC of Ohio provides advocacy on safety and workers’ compensation-related issues, as well as networking opportunities and educational programs for construction safety professionals. AGC also provides safety resources for contractors and collaborates with other industry groups on construction safety and health initiatives.

AGC of Ohio Action What Is AGC ACTION? AGC ACTION is the nonpartisan political action committee (PAC) sponsored by AGC of Ohio. AGC ACTION pools personal, voluntary financial contributions from individuals in the constructionindustry. The contributions are used to support Ohio legislators and statewide elected officials who, regardless of party affiliation, understand the construction industry and the specific needs, interests and concerns of AGC member companies and their employees. What Does AGC Do Around The Statehouse? AGC of Ohio pushes for legislation and rules that would improve the commercial building industry and tries to prevent or change those that would hurt contractors and their employees. Issues that AGC of Ohio regularly deals with include public and private construction requirements, workforce development and training, workers’ compensation, economic development, safety, taxation, preference programs, building codes, unemployment compensation, etc. Why Is PAC Important? A healthy PAC is an essential tool for AGC of Ohio to maintain a strong presence around the Statehouse. Ohio law does not allow for corporate contributions to political campaigns; therefore, AGC cannot use association monies or dues for political events and fund raisers. AGC instead uses AGC ACTION funds that come from contractors’ personal contributions. PAC allows AGC staff to attend fund raisers to show support for lawmakers that are willing to take the time to understand AGC’s issues and appreciate our concerns. And, even though AGC may not give directly to certain legislators, when they see AGC at caucus events or another lawmaker’s fund raiser, they are more inclined to listen to AGC’s concerns. A healthy PAC helps afford AGC access, thus allowing AGC the opportunity to better influence legislators on matters related to the construction industry. Contribute To AGC ACTION And Help AGC Advocate For The Industry And Your Business! Contribution levels are up to the individual – contributions have been as small as $25 and as much as $1,500. Mail your personal or PAC check to: AGC ACTION, 1755 Northwest Blvd, Columbus OH 43212. Note: PAC contributions are not tax deductible. The state of Ohio does not allow corporate contributions. Sole proprietors, partnerships and unincorporated associations, which include incorporated professional associations and limited liability companies, may use company funds to contribute. AGC OF OHIO AWARDS Established in 1991, Build Ohio celebrates construction through an awards program that recognizes contractors for excellence in construction and a gala that reflects upon the accomplishments of the construction industry throughout the year. The Build Ohio awards program recognizes commercial contractors for excellence in construction. Winning projects set the standard of excellence in construction in Ohio defining a standard that many strive to achieve. The awards program is open to all AGC of Ohio contractor members in good standing. A panel of highly regarded retired construction professionals selects the winning entries according to how they meet (and surpass) the Build Ohio criteria. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AGC OF OHIO EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Associated General Contractors of Ohio Education Foundation awards scholarships annually to outstanding students pursuing a career in the construction industry. The Scholarship Fund is managed by the AGC of Ohio Education Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation established in 1999. The first scholarships were awarded in 2000. AGC of Ohio, affiliated companies and divisions fund the scholarships in their name with a one-time $20,000 donation to the Foundation. A panel of construction professionals selects the scholarship recipients based on their cumulative grade point average, work experience, extra-curricular activities and achievements, financial need, and an essay. Currently, AGC of Ohio awards seven scholarships annually. In addition, the Education Foundation administers scholarships sponsored by the following AGC affiliated individuals and organizations: Akron AGC, AGC of Northwest Ohio (2), Baker Concrete Construction, Central Ohio AGC (2), Cleveland AGC, The Timothy P. Galvin Scholarship, E. Grant Hesser Memorial Scholarship, Independence Excavating, The Knoch Corporation, Kokosing, Inc., Liberty Construction, Lincoln Construction, Robert H. Moyer, Precision Environmental, Rudolph Libbe, Inc. (2), The Ruhlin Co., Settle Muter Electric, Shook Construction Co., Tuttle Construction, Inc., and West Central Ohio Divison of AGC. The Foundation also selects the recipients of the Mosser Construction scholarships in two Northwest Ohio area colleges. In addition to scholarship sponsorship, members can help the scholarship fund by providing a donation with their membership dues, and participating in the annual AGC of Ohio Golf Outing benefitting the scholarship fund.
