PAVILION SITE COLONIAL MARKET BUILDING KANDY LAKE TEMPLE OF THE TOOTH RELIC UNDERGROUND PATH ENTRY

The city of Kandy is located in the hilly central region of Sri Lanka. The temple of the tooth relic of the Buddha (d) is a major religious site; it is located on the east side of the city. Shown below is a major intersection of Kandy. The iconic clock tower splits a major thoroughfare which responds to the topography and divides into high and low roads. This project (a) is located across the street from Kandy’s main food market. The market is housed in a traditional colonial building (b), one of many remnants of former British rule. This intersection is also the location of underground paths, which connect the strict northern grid of the city, developed by the British, with the looser sprawl of Sri Lankan development. UNDERGROUND PATHS

THE GOAL FOR THIS DESIGN WAS TO RESPECT TRADITIONAL SRI LANKAN ARCHITECTURE BY INTERPRETING ITS PROPORTION AND AESTHETIC TO FIT AN OPEN PAVILION. IN A CLIMATE AND CULTURE WHICH CELEBRATE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUT, IN A CITY WHICH IS BOTH CONGESTED AND LUSH; THE MOST APPROPRIATE INTERVENTION ON THIS GREEN SITE WAS TO RETAIN THE FOLIAGE AND WORK LIGHTLY AROUND IT. TAKING A CUE FROM THE NETWORK OF UNDERGROUND CONNECTIONS, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO BRING COMMUTERS DEEP WITHIN THE LUSH SITE, AWAY FROM THE TRAFFIC AND MAYHEM OF THE CITY STREETS, TO A PEACEFUL PAVILION OF ADAPTIVE USE. THE UNDERGROUND PATH IS EXTENDED TO REACH THE CENTER OF THE MAIN PAVILION, WHERE PEDESTRIANS ASCEND TOWARD A QUIET COVERED STRUCTURE. WHETHER EMPLOYED AS A MARKET OR A SIMPLE MEETING PLACE, RESIDENTS OF KANDY ARE PROVIDED A PLACE OF RESPITE WITHIN THE BUSTLING CITY FABRIC.
