SOUNDWALK x 1___Sensorial walk: touch, smell, taste

The city is created for eye. Made of majestic buildings, broad streets, open squares and parks, pavement-catwalks – drains into our window-eyes, shows off itself, exhibits for others to see. The city is built of sounds. Composed of murmurs, whispers, hums, rustles, clatters, rattles and cracks breaks into our always open door-ears, making us indifferent to noise. As to feel the city, you must get really close to it, close your eyes, shut your ears. Smells emerge from the urban body – intimate reeks of sewers, soft scent of promenades, musky aroma of gates and backyards. Urban tissue blends together plaster's roughness with smoothness of glass, coarseness metallic drain-pipes and softness of dog's droppings. If you touch it and wait a moment, might be you would feel how it raises and falls, how rhythmically vibrates, pulsates with life and death. Spacery czuciowe: dotyk, zapach, smak

Miasto stworzone jest dla oka. Zbudowane z majestatycznych budynków, szerokich korytarzy ulic, plenerów placów i skwerków, chodników-wybiegów – wlewa się przez okna oczu, wystawia na pokaz, pokazuje innym. Miasto skonstruowane jest z dźwięków. Uplecione z gwarów, szmerów, szumów, terkotów, stukotów i trzasków wdziera się przez otwarte drzwi uszu, zobojętnia na hałas. Ale trzeba podejśd naprawdę blisko, zamknąd oczy, zatkad uszy, aby miasto wyczud. Z miejskiego cielska wyłaniają się bowiem zapachy – intymne wyziewy kanalizacji, delikatne wonie deptaków, piżmowe aromaty bram i podwórek. Miejska tkanka łączy niejednoznaczną chropowatośd tynków z gładkością szkła, szorstkością metalicznych rynien, miękkością psich kup. Jeśli ją dotkniesz i poczekasz chwilę, może poczujesz jak wznosi się i opada, jak rytmicznie wibruje, pulsuje życiem i umieraniem.

SOUNDWALK x 2: (Re)orientation into nature

Imagine you hear sounds beyond the space where you are. Imagine a situation when what is hearing is not what is seeing, when obvious connection between vision and sound is shattered. Imagine the city surrounded by nature compostions. Follow me and experience a slowmotion immersion into sounds create by cicadas, bees, flies, birds and coyotes. dr Jarema Drozdowicz (Faculty of Educational Studies, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznao, Poland): SEEING IS BELIEVING. ANTHROPOLOGICAL VISIONS OF CULTURE This paper's thesis line is being made by an attempt to grasp the specific character of the visual aspect of cultural phenomena as seen by cultural anthropology. Anthropological visions of culture do undergo certain process of theoretical and methodological transgressions, thus all of them might seem to differentiate the point of view in this matter. Nevertheless we are able to draw a clear line of a historical development of anthropological thought in the visual context. This historical reconstruction of the visual paradigm is making the starting point of the paper and leads inevitably to the question of how the burden of anthropological traditions affects the discipline's perspective today. Anthropologists often do describe their object of study, that is culture in its various forms and shapes, as a certain thing we look upon from a different perspective. This shift in the cultural perspective makes the anthropological view of the Other so unique in the first place. On the other hand the visual approach might be also regarded as an obstacle in perceiving the cultural difference as it is in its own context. Although the ethnocentric view is long passĂŠ in the eyes of many, its presence cannot be ignored in the construction of current anthropological approaches towards culture. To overcome our own limitations we must look far beyond our own cultural dictionary having simultaneously in mind the fact, that we still look at the Other through glasses which we are given to us by our own culture. This argument brings into the discussion not just the visual aspect of anthropological work, but also the performative one, which builds the main thesis of this paper.

dr Agata Stanisz (Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznao, Poland): DE-VISUALIZING ANTHROPOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE. MANIFESTO

The aim of my presentation is to highlight issues connected with cultural processes which I desribe with the use of a working notion 'de-visual'. I assume there are important questions that must be posed while discussing alternative for the visual paradigm in a cultural anthropology. I propose speech consisted with two parts. Firstly I would like to stirr up a debate on possibilities of doing anthropology which rejects the visual paradigm. I will raise questions about potential of a new, extravisual production of knowledge and processes of a formulation anthropologal pratice as sensorial experience co-directed by technology and new media. Here it might be useful to mention my perspective is an anthropologist of sound perspective. This fact will have a number of ramifications of my insight. The second part of my speech will be loud taking the form of a manifesto.

prof. Mattijs P. J. van de Port (Department of Anthropology, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands): FRUIT PROJECT: SAVOURING BRAZILIAN FRUITS

Saborear frutas brasileiras (Savouring brazilian fruits) is film project that seeks to convey the sensuous pleasures of touching, smelling, eating, sucking, slurping and swallowing the fruits of Brazil, including caju, pinha, sapoti, cana de açucar, tamarindo, goiaba, siriguela, jaca & manga. The recordings were made in the city of Salvador, Bahia, in the summer of 2011. The project is part of my ongoing attempts to open up anthropological research for what I call the-rest-ofwhat-is -- the dimensions of being that need to be repressed, ignored, or tabooed for our reality definitions to make sense. I think of saborear frutas brasileiras as a critique of the logocentrism that reins Academia, as well as of the reduction of anthropology to 'semiotics'. These images, sounds and our bodily responses to them may remind us that there are many new and alternative 'archives' to be explored in the study of Man.

Trine Thygaard-Nielsen (Institute of Anthropology at University of Copenhagen, Denmark) TASTING THE GENERATIONAL CONFLICT. AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDY OF FOOD INDUCED FLEXIBILITY BETWEEN ANDALUSIAN GENERATIONS IN THE UPBRINGING OF MINORS. How can we deal with food in anthropology in a way that compliment the mapping of the structural categorization of food elements? Taste will be my starting point. Only in the field can it be sensed. By experiencing the eating situations and ideas about taste in Andalusian intergenerational food communities I was able to sense how social relations are at work around the lunch table. In everyday life, taste does not only equal individual taste preferences but also broader frames of reference such as healthy taste, the taste of reward and the taste of belonging. These contexts, which I will conceptualize as regimes of taste, make us able to consider conceptions of care, commitment, coddling and responsibility. It is the regimes of taste that I will address in order to shed light upon the distinctive positions inhabited by generations and gender in intergenerational food communities. Since everybody present around the table has a saying in the matter at play especially in the feeding of the minors everybody acts as they think best. Thus leading to discrepancies between generations and gender regarding which regime of taste is of vital importance. The ways of dealing with these discrepancies are various e.g. liquidize food, prepare numerous plates or handing over the education of the children’s taste buds to the school’s dining hall. I hereby stress that approaching the interplay between the regimes of taste and the positions inhabited is the key to understand the development of social identities regarding food, feeding and even positions in broader social structures.

Phd-student Katarzyna Wala (Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences, at University of z FEEL THE BORDELINE? Wrocław, Poland): DO YOU ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE SENSES AND DOMESTIC SPACE They are renting rooms in others' houses. For various reasons they don't decide to take a loan. While wandering in the city, from building to building, they are looking for suitable conditions to live. Sometimes they stay longer in one place, sometimes they move out after few days. Since they can't afford to pay the rent, they decide to share a flat with other people. They keep their own intimacy in a single room, while kitchen, hall and bathroom is treated as a common space, of meetings and conflicts. I thought over the significance of senses both in the issue of coexistence with flatmates, and in broader context of “being at home”, whilst doing a research among young adults renting flats in Wroclaw. While discussing this matter, I'd like to present my own thoughts on the subject of researching within the sensory ethnography, on the basis of David MacDougall, Laura U. Marks, Sarah Pink's works, and think over the form of presentation of visualized/sensed and embodied knowledge.

Alexander Chaplin (University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands): COUCHSURFING: SENSUAL ENCOUNTERS WITH AUTHENTICALLY ‘SENSE-ABLE’ OTHERNESS This article is about global travel network ‘CouchSurfing’, which allows members to request free accommodation in each other’s homes while travelling and claims to provide a ‘genuine’ sense of the ‘otherness’ of other people and places. While anthropologists have shown that all claims of ‘authenticity’ in tourism can be deconstructed, CouchSurfing stands out because it capitalises on the popular belief that the ocularcentric ‘stagedness’ of mainstream tourism makes it suspicious, and asserts that the intimate face-to-face encounters it facilitates are ‘immediate’ and ‘thus real’. As anthropologists, we have to maintain that mediation is inescapable, but we can learn from the way CouchSurfing tries to render encounters between members ‘immediate’. The network does this mostly by addressing the ‘register’ of the sensuous body: it makes members fully immerse themselves in the everyday of others for prolonged periods of time, analogous to the anthropologist in the field. With examples from fieldwork in Serbia, I show how the sensorium, ultimately uncontrollable by the mind, and characterised by its own habitus, inevitably responds to the unfamiliar that makes up someone else’s everyday. The felt reality of ‘sense-able’ otherness then is hard to deny. We thus see that otherness has ‘sense-able’ dimensions and is not a merely cognitive construct (as anthropologists have often analysed it). Taking the senses into account in our analyses therefore helps us understand how (post)modern subjects manage to find ways of living ‘authentic’ – sensorially grounded – lives in a world in which finding firm ground under our feet seems ever more troublesome.

Alejandro Jaramillo (Visual and Media Anthropology at Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany): WHOSE SCARRED SENSES ARE THEY ANYWAY?: THE POLITICS AND PO-ETHICS OF AN ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE SENSES AMONG COLOMBIAN VICTIMS This article addresses the interstices of the institutional discourses on ‘reparation’ and ‘reconciliation’ that leave aside a preponderant reality of the pain of victims: its embodiment and subsequent sensorial residues. The particular yet hugely discordant case of Colombia allows for much thought about the manner in which institutional powers render the concept of memory infertile while maintaining a generic index of success, in its coming to terms with victims of State sponsored crime, made up of testimonies that are extracted based on their value as lineal/causal narratives which provide enough information for transcription and archival registry. This concern turns to the exploration, along many contemporary artistic practices in Colombia, of the possibilities that lay in enacting the sensorial in the audiovisual mediation of culture as a way to both escape and amplify any institutional normativity of economic compensation and oficial retribution, for it could shape out that most intimate and ungraspable realm of human dwelling. Then of course, this exploration would remain a wholly theoretical one with conclusions that could, given the opportunity, be deployed as a guiding scheme for the collaborative creation of an audiovisual product that appeals to a –reshaping of- collective memory and so the sensorial realities that have been fractured by the culture of terror, something that could have both a special communicative or therapeutic outcome. That is, to work with and towards memory as an embodied experience and not as a token of the simplifying function underlying the institutional “reparation” and “reconciliation” process.

Therese Kjellerup Thorstholm (Institute of Anthropology at University of Copenhagen, Denmark): THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE SENSES: GETTING IN TOUCH WITH FIELDWORK When looking through the history of the senses in anthropology, what seems to me to be the most striking thing, is the loss of doing ethnographic fieldwork in the search of understanding the senses in a Western context. It is in the West that we anthropologists try to grasp the significance of the senses and how people, including ourselves, take the senses for granted in living our everyday lives. In order to question our own senses, anthropologists have travelled thousands of kilometres to try to understand how other people with different world views use and understand their senses. However, few fieldwork studies have focused on the senses in the West. Here many scholars focus on theories about the senses in a contemporary view, but few actually dare to get in touch with the field – the essence of anthropology. The sense of the field is lost - it is not smelled, touched, tasted, seen or heard. In the Autumn of 2010 I tried to smell, touch, taste, see and hear a field very close to my own – in Copenhagen. However the field was indeed quite different from my own. I did fieldwork among elders at an activity centre to try to understand the significance of the social context for the sense of hearing. I wish to explain how methodologically I found that possible, and furthermore why I think that the anthropology of the senses needs to be challenged in the field of anthropology.

Phd-student Tanja Kubes (Institute for Ethnology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany): FIELDWORK ON HIGH HEELS: HOSTESSES AND THE SOCIOCULTURAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE FEMALE BODY Tradeshow hostesses represent an almost archetypical image of femininity. The process of becoming a hostess includes a constant defragmentation and recomposition of the female body and the acquisition of specific “hostess body techniques”. Seemingly everyday activities like standing or smiling are stripped of their codified social meanings and emotional values and are re--‐acquired as purely physical actions. There is a clear cognitive/emotional dissonance between how hostesses feel (e.g. sore legs and aching backs) and what their mimic seems to suggest (cheerful smiles and alluring glances). Doing hostess, thus, is a complex physical and mental activity that can only be adequately studied in a holistic, multisensory way. The ethnographer has no choice but to subject herself to the strict regime of (often quite painful) bodily experience. My paper is based on extensive “thick participation” and participant observation among tradeshow hostesses and discusses the physical (or incorporative) aspects of culture that can be observed in the act of doing hostess. I will address how culture forms the body and how it is incorporated, how it inscribes itself in the body and “naturalizes” body and mind. In addition, I will develop a performative concept of “doing culture” as it can be induced from the sensory experience of hostessing.

dr Magdalena Dąbrowska (Institute of Cultural Studies at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland): JOURNEY TO INDIA: RECOLLECTING SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE By using numerous ethnographic methodologies (autoetnography, performative ethnography, sensory ethnography) I will attempt to share the experience of travelling in India. Indian culture is especially interesting due to its post- colonial heritage and numerous academic debates over representation of „the oriental” in Western social sciences. My paper would attempt to reconcile reflection on being in, living in and experiencing other culture with methodological experiments with ethnography. Contemporary ethnography rejected positivist methodologies and their seemingly neutral scientific language as being associated with colonial context. Postmodern ethnographies attempt to provide multidimensional, context- sensitive research, and thus work with experimental methods of ethnographic writing. In the paper I would like to argue that post-modern ethnographies, by paying attention to experience, body, senses, provide new perspectives on cultural research and presenting research results.

Phd-student Karolina Marcinkowska (Ethnology and Anthropology Institute, Warsaw University, Poland): RESEARCHING THE INVISIBLE – KALANURI CULT IN MAHAJANGA, MADAGASCAR.

Tristes tropiques, a book by Claude Lévi-Strauss, has had different interpretations thus far. It is noteworthy that perhaps what has not been overemphasized by researchers so far are descriptions of sensations experienced by Levi-Strauss, who travels by boat and investigates primitive communities, as well as explores territories of Brazil in search of "real savage" ones. As he mentions himself, he will associate Brazil, by virtue of sound stimuli, forever with the smell of incense. He also learns the taste of koro, white larvae, i.e. the delicacy of Indians who are not too eager to tell strangers about their culinary preferences. He forces his way through forests and tries to get accustomed to the necessity of protecting his body against insects. What are involved in the process of the fieldwork are all the senses. For this reason, I am interested not only in the role of the senses in the fieldwork, including their impact on the manner and quality of observations made during it, but also the way of describing its results. Apart from photographs taken in the field in Tristes tropiques, we will also find extensive descriptions of sensory experiences of the tribes observed and examined by Lévi-Strauss as well as his own ones. In the context of former and present field research methodologies they are the main subject

Madagascar is called by its inhabitants “the land of ancestors” (Tanindrazana): each region and ethnic group has its own way to communicate either with the deceased or with nature spirits. Daily interactions with spirits are practically integrated with the everyday life, considered as components of the Malagasy “art of living”, sources of the community fihavanana and the individual destiny vintana. During my field work connected with the different discourses about tromba possession cult in the Mahajanga city in west Madagascar, I had the possibility to assist some kalanuri ceremonies. All the knowledge about kalanuri beings is actually based on sensory experiences and – in a minor degree - on orally transmitted stories. In fact, even talking about them can be taboo (fady), moreover an accidently glimpse on this being could be fatal. Kalanuri are said to be small beings, which have their own social connections: they actually lead a parallel life to humans, but tend to be invisible to them. They can be friendly and even highly propitious, give advices and warnings about the future, which are connected to general prosperity, health or social relationships. However it’s not easy to take advantage of the kalanuri knowledge: like many other spirits, it’s only up to him, who will be chosen to be his medium. The connection with the spirit is possible only by building a special house for him and respecting the many rules imposed by him. Experience of the “invisible” in Mahajanga, local forms of understanding the kalanuri spirit world and getting in touch with it, as well as searching for methods to describe such topics, will be the core of my paper.

Anna Kubisztal (Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at University of Lodz, Poland): THE SOUNDS OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA - JOURNEY WITH DR IÑIGO SÁNCHEZ

Agata Kochaniewicz, Anna Adamowicz (Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznao, Poland): CROWD, NOISE, STENCH. UNPLEASANT EMPIRICAL EXPERIENCE IN ANTHROPOLOGY FIELDWORK In our speech we would like to refer to the theme fieldwork as sensory experience. In official reports, articles hardly ever we can meet with descriptions about the cases of sensorial experience of anthropologists. Researchers stress mainly two senses: eyesight and hearing, which can be considered as european way of feeling. In our speech we will focus on autoethnography giving examples from our fieldwork and literature. Our aim is to emphasize that influence of sense like smell, taste can have significant impact on description and results of anthropology research. Using attributes directly connected with senses that are perceived as annoying like impression of many people in one place, stinky smell or squeaky sounds we will show to the audience how deep and distinctly this thing have connections with researcher’ self-feeling and going further with perception of field and respondents.

The purpose of my paper is to present the research made by Spanish anthropologist Iñigo Sanches, who specializes in sounds and music in anthropological perspective. He is going to write and describe sounds in an old district in Lisbon called: Mouraria. Mouraria is a zone where emigrants live. People from totally different countries, present completely different cultures, what is closely related with different sounds and music. In addition this zone is one of the oldest in Lisbon, where born fado. I participated in one research made by Iñigo during the festival Todos. Where I met all of neighbours from Mouraria. He does a research in Lisbon as he did in Barcelona. He researched sounds and music in old district in Barcelona, who was a fishermen district (earlier fishermen’ village) and after time was transformed in modern zone. The docks was revitalised and government totally changed this part of city. He compared and contrasted the sounds of the earliest times and contemporary. He recorded old and new sounds. What is more, Mr Sanches made interviews with old fishermen and with new owner of this zone about sounds that they remember and what kind of sounds are after changes. *Mr Sanches and research made by him are part of my PhD work about the Portuguese Anthropology. He is an anthropologist who is doing post doc research in Lisbon. He is an example of foreigner who is doing his researched in the Portuguese School of Anthropology in Portugal.

Zsuzsanna Kunt (Eötvös Loránd Science Budapest, Hungary): BLINDNESS AND RELATIVISM

This lecture will be dedicated to exploring the potential critical and cultural contexts of the loss of visual sensation within anthropology and makes an attempt to introduce the existential appearance, the aims, the chances and the tasks of the (sub)cultures of the blind people. The injuries of the senses lead to a peculiar perception and construction of reality, which fundamentally determines human behaviour, defining certain cultural and subcultural systems of ideas and actions. Based on the insight of cultural relativism, we consider the alternative ways of action, thinking and perception just as valid as the ones belonging to our cultural tradition. What extent is this validity acknowledged in connection with blind people? How are the forms of “action, thinking and perception” of disabled people reshaped by the social norms, the system of demands and opportunities? What kinds of cultural practices do the blind people have to sense social reality? Social scientists have studied the social aspects and categories of the health-illness dichotomy along with the cultural patterns of behaviour related to it and the social roles of the stigmatized people. A few years before the millennium scientific interest was directed to study the specific construction of customs, behaviour, identity and knowledge within disabled communities. The main goal of this study is to raise attention to the importance and novelty of the cultural anthropological approach in the disability studies and to inspire the co-thinking on this topic.

Adrianna Koralewska (Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznao, Poland): SHIFTING SENSORIUM TRAINING AS A GIFT OF NOTHING Does any one need to have eyes and ears to know? It has been years since I read Robert Sheckley's short story about a man who was traced down by the odour of his thoughts. It seems rather like science-fiction, nevertheless, it may apply to most of us, as in the Western world man uses only a small fraction of his greatly modified capabilities. Through ethnographic description of a professional physical theatre training programme in which I actively participated, I would like to speak from my insider’s emic, as well as outsider’s etic perspective about ‘shifting sensorium’ to describe people who experience the world through strikingly different modes of perception than the supposed visually dominant Euro-American way of being. The principals of this training were Impulse and Kinaesthetic Learning, Psycho-empathetic Learning and Sensory Awareness. The main focus was set far away from the sense of sight as it is common for all performing arts, especially dance and traditional forms of Asian Theatres. It was a space for intercultural exchange but also ‘never-ending momentum’ of breaking free from the social structure. In terms of communicative role, we see totally involved human beings using all the senses they are endowed with. Until now it has proved to have a significant influence on my actual work practice as a teacher, researcher and performer.
