ARTIST IN RESIDENCE INFORMATION The Mendocino Art Center offers an Artist in Residence (AIR) program each year from September through May. Residencies are offered in Fine Arts, Ceramics, Sculpture, Textiles, Jewelry, and Digital Arts. This program offers the working artist and craftsperson a welcome retreat from the usual routine of everyday life and a chance to develop a body of work. Living and working here in this community of artists offers a truly rewarding opportunity for personal and artistic growth—an experience never to be forgotten. ACCOMMODATIONS: The Art Center has eleven very basic apartments of various sizes. Rental rates for AIRs are based on occupancy. Please refer to the attached sheet. AIRs with significant others will normally need to find off-campus housing. STUDIOS: The Art Center has three studios dedicated to Fine Arts, an etching press, a jewelry and metalsmithing studio, two studios dedicated to textiles (including a weaving room), two for ceramics, electric and gas fired kilns and a small foundry. Studio space is usually shared with other artists, and a nominal fee (varies per department) is charged to cover utilities and maintenance of the studios. Weekend workshops may require the AIRs to temporarily move or store their equipment and supplies. MAC provides some storage units in the studios for use by AIRs. WORKSHOPS: Residents will find many opportunities for further technical and aesthetic growth through workshops offered by the Education Department. Residents will receive a members’ discount on all MAC classes and workshops. Also, if interested, residents may be asked to teach by their department coordinator. Teaching assistants are sometimes needed, especially in the Ceramics Department. If you are interested in teaching or being an assistant please let us know. SUPPORT GROUP: Residents have the opportunity to meet periodically to discuss their work and encourage one another. Life drawing, portraiture, watercolor, and figurative sculpture open studios are available through the Art Center. Some departments also offer an open studio night once a week. EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITIES: There are numerous galleries on the Mendocino Coast and the area is known for its crafts and eclectic art. An annual exhibition of work by AIRs is held in April in the Art Center’s Main Gallery. APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 1st for all departments.

Applications for Artist in Residence are received and reviewed by the department coordinators, and then by the Residency Committee. The committee also determines which applicants are accepted for the residency program. Acceptance is based on artistic merit, as determined from the quality of the portfolio submitted by the artist, the artist’s statement of artistic objectives, the artist’s educational and artistic background as described in the resume, references, and letters of recommendation.
