s one of the most versatile drums in Africa, the djembe was originally used to gather people together, to celebrate success and to help tell inspirational stories. Djembe, therefore, seemed a fitting title for YWAM AfriCom’s magazine which aims to do just that. Djembe is packed with stories, updates and teachings from YWAM volunteers who live and work right across this vast and beautiful continent. Distributed to every YWAM location in Africa, as well as international supporters, its purpose is to connect YWAM bases, ministries and missionaries with one another and with like-minded organisations to provide support, share knowledge and to develop effective partnerships on the mission field. It’s also a useful resource tool through which to share the stories of YWAM staff and volunteers and to celebrate the awesome things God is doing in Africa through them. It’s truly exciting to see how God is building His Kingdom across Africa and the key role we have to play in it. We’d love to hear your testimonies and stories. What is unique about the work you are doing? What are you struggling with or seen success in? What has God put on your heart to share with the rest of the YWAM family? To send us your stories and feedback, or simply to find out more about Djembe or other areas of AfriCom’s work email the editorial team or visit our website at: www.ywamafricom.org.

LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS by Kobus van Niekirk Africa Leadership Team Leading Elder

B

ack in the 1960s, when YWAM’s pioneers set out to follow God’s calling to ‘Know God and to Make Him Known’, every nation that YWAM went into was a ‘new’ nation. In every town, village, and community there were new friends to be made and new customs or lessons to be learned. Since those early days, the mission has grown substantially and we find ourselves no longer continuously cutting new ground.

N

“God has revealed a new structure... known as ‘circles, cycles and circuits’.”

A new form of accountability:

Une nouvelle forme de responsabilité:

Uma nova forma de prestação de contas:

Whilst YWAM remains God-centred and spirit-led, we’re now in a very different season. With 20,000 YWAMers internationally and many more short-term volunteers, there is a greater need to work in collaboration, understanding and unity. This has implications for how we think and act. God is calling for maturity in the mission and encouraging us to be accountable to one another. Around 9 years ago, Loren heard God speak to him about YWAM moving out of the old structure – using business terminology, such as director and chairman – towards an eldership model. God has since revealed this new structure to the Global Elders, known as ‘circles, cycles and circuits’, that will help all of us in this season. It’s a form of mutual accountability that, if embraced, will give YWAM the stability to grow further without the need for international oversight (i.e. centralisation).

Reporting the rhythms of YWAM Africa

Here’s how it works:

Voilà comment ça se passe:

Funciona dessa maneira:

Circles This is your specialism, your focus, your specific calling. Your circle will reflect others with the same or a similar calling, whatever the name of their particular ministry and wherever they’re located globally. Circles can interact with each other virtually through forums and Skype chats, but also have gatherings to share ideas and hear what God is saying about their particular area of focus.

Cycles Each ministry goes through cycles. Whilst one team may be in the pioneering stage, another might be well established with a good standing in the community. Meanwhile, another ministry might be going through a time of reforming. By recognising cycles, we can share knowledge, expertise and wisdom from others who are at a similar stage as us, whilst learning from others who have gone before us. Circuits This is the physical location in which we find ourselves. Circuits is probably one of the most established of the three C’s because in many places we already have regional leadership teams in place. A YWAM operating location or base is often a collection of ministries containing different circles going through different cycles, but providing a central location to worship and meet together. Within the circles, cycles and circuits, we need to allow God to raise up leaders among us that can speak with authority, and guide us. Just because we are decentralised, does not abandon the need for clear accountability and humility and a willingness to serve each other. The three C’s create a platform for this to take place; they allow us to perform in a role for a season, yet still continue with the work God called us to do. The three C’s will look different in different places and for different groups. The expression of YWAM in one discipline will look vastly different to that in another, for example. And many of us will cross from one circle to another and from one circuit to another over time. Yet the emphasis for this way of thinking is for us to have a mechanism in which to work with one another better as we seek to serve God. Let’s work together as one mission, allowing God to challenge us in our different spheres of influence in this new season.

i info@ywamafricom.org

Grabbing hold of Jesus Saisissant la main de Jésus

B

ringing the gospel to unreached people groups is not easy. Many of them live in difficult to reach places or in countries where it is unsafe or even illegal to be a Christian or to share your faith with others. Reaching out to Muslims in North Africa, for example, puts you at great risk, including potential imprisonment, persecution, even torture and death. Most believers also find that they have to persevere for many years, gaining the confidence of the locals and looking for opportunities to share the Gospel, before they see any fruit from their work. But God is always at work. Here, one YWAMer in North Africa, shares how God spoke and radically transformed the life of a prominent Muslim believer: “My colleagues and I regularly travel to share the Gospel in remote villages in the North African mountains. Our strategy is simple; spend time with people and share who Jesus is, what he did and why it matters. We have been faithfully sharing for many, many years, but it’s only in the past three years that have we begun to see any fruit. I have included just one of the many stories of how people in these remote areas are choosing to follow Jesus as an illustration of God’s awesome power and to encourage others that perseverance really does pay off.

P

Aceitando Jesus

N

ão é fácil levar o evangelho a grupos remotos.

I turn my head to see our host, Mohamed, disappearing into the next room to do his daily Muslim prayers. On his return, I ask him, “Does God ever speak to you when you’re praying?” “Yes, in the Quran.” “But, does he ever speak to you personally?” He replies confidently, “No, that’s not possible. God doesn’t speak to people.” “We hear from God,” I say, motioning towards our group. Mohamed is really interested now, “Really? What does he say?” “Well, one thing he told me was to move here to this country. That’s why I’m here.” I then challenge him to spend time quietly listening for God to speak in his next prayer time. Afterwards, we sit and watch the Jesus film in the local dialect, before enjoying some local food together. Before leaving the next morning, I sit down with our host and tell him briefly about the trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. When I ask Mohamed what he thinks about it all, his answer surprises me. “I want to follow the way of Jesus.” Right there and then, the Holy Spirit was at work in his heart! To be honest, I found myself at a loss for words. I’d never had anybody in these areas so decisively answer the question. I encouraged him to spend more time thinking about what I had told him about Jesus and to keep listening for His voice. Mohamed assured me that he would. Less than a year later we were back for another visit. Mohamed and I had seen each other a few times since that first visit and enjoyed some good conversations. This time, he assured me that he understood how the way of Jesus differed from Islam and confirmed that he wanted to become a Christian. As Mohamed said with passion, “God spoke to me and said, ‘Grab hold of the way of Jesus. It was like I was blind. But now I can see!” In many of these countries, those who turn to Jesus risk persecution, imprisonment, losing their position in society, even being disowned by their own families. Yet Mohamed was willing to take the risk and follow his new faith, after having heard the voice of God and knowing that He is the one and only living God. It’s amazing to see how our sovereign God is speaking to people and transforming hearts in North Africa. The way is straightforward and simple; walk with God and share your faith. Even in Muslim areas, where Christians are bravely sharing the Gospel, people are turning and ‘grabbing hold’ of Jesus with conviction and enthusiasm.

-Sim, no Corão.

“...investing in a new generation of young leaders”

A

s elders or spiritual grandparents in YWAM, Jim and Judy Orred have much to bring the younger generation, helping them to find their place in God and to fulfil their God-given purpose in life. Together they teach principles of effective and biblical leadership, as well as directing ‘Slingshot’ a leadership program aimed at encouraging young people to take hold of what God has given them and to use their strengths to lead others. When they’re not traveling between different YWAM bases or leading schools, this inspirational couple love nothing better than to enjoy a tasty meal with close friends or to settle back and enjoy an intriguing spy thriller. Back in the days before YWAM… Judy: I was a university student. Jim: I was at Bible school. I know God has called me to… Judy: develop leadership. To help people identify what they cannot see in themselves and giving them the tools and principles to make good choices for their lives and on behalf of those they lead. Jim: invest in a new generation of young leaders, coming alongside them and building them up through relationships. My biggest highlight in my work so far… Judy: hearing years later how well people who I taught on Slingshot are doing in God. Jim: seeing young people investing in Him because you invested in them. Others say my biggest gifting is… Judy: facilitating and thinking about all the possible implications. Jim: encouragement. My biggest flaw is… Judy: self-criticism. Jim: getting easily distracted.

Judy: apoiando e pensando sobre todas as implicações possíveis. Jim: encorajamento. Minha maior falha é… Judy: auto-crítica. Jim: ser fácilmente distraído.

I really admire… Judy: people who know who they are and who they are in God. Jim: anyone who reaches their later years and remains an optimistic, lifelonger learner. It brings a smile to my face when… Judy: I’m with good friends enjoying good food. Jim: we get invited to enjoy a meal with close friends. When things are hard, what motivates me is… Judy: deadlines. Jim: the story of David overcoming Goliath, as it reminds me not to be discouraged but to trust in God’s faithfulness knowing that we can depend on Him however hard the situation appears. Something significant I learned recently was… Judy: shortcuts do not pay. Jim: the importance of relationship intelligence in leadership in the Bible. A significant challenge I overcame was… Judy: insecurity. Jim: passitivity. I’ve tried but I can’t… Judy: be creative with paint. Jim: play basketball. The one thing I never go away without is… Judy: coffee. Jim: unlocked smart phone. The thing I miss most from home is… Judy: space to move around in. Jim: being close to my kids and granddaughter. In my spare time… Judy: I read spy novels. Jim: I watch movies, usually spy thrillers. My secret indulgence is… Judy: reading far too many spy novels. Jim: indulging in fine chocolate, especially as a desert. My favourite film is… Judy: a gripping, captivating espionage film or anything to do with World War Two or the more recent Cold War era. Jim: Good Will Hunting. What About Bob. In 10 or 20 years time… Judy: I would like to be part of a much larger global community, not necessarily YWAM. Jim: Writing a lot more and spending more time with our kids and grandkids. If I wasn’t in YWAM… Judy: I would be a consultant or a Strengths Finders coach. Jim: Possibly a therapist or a consultant.

Mon principal défaut c’est... Judy: la critique de moi-même. Jim: d’être facilement distrait. J’admire vraiment... Cela me fait sourire quand... Jim: Good Will Hunting. What About Bob.

Jim: Good Will Hunting or About Bob.

WAM elder, Jim Orred has coached numerous young people around the world in effective and biblical leadership. He travels from place to place doing what he does best, connecting with and encouraging others. In his teaching, Jim emphasises just how important valuing others and investing in our relationships are to developing the strengths of a new generation of leaders. Q: How did you develop your ministry? Ten years ago, God told me that he had something new for me; to become a father to a young generation and to work towards seeing others encouraged, promoted and taught His principles. Now, I have the privilege of pouring directly and indirectly into the lives of hundreds of young leaders globally, answering their questions, whilst learning and relationally walking with them. Q: What motivates you to become involved in the lives of young people? Young people are like clay that can still be molded. They’re teachable, idealistic and ready to take action in their community, just like Jesus did. They’re also open with their issues, looking to be affirmed by their elders, wanting that protection that close relationships with mature people gives them. It amazes me just how empowering simply showing interest in their lives is to them. Q: In your view, what are the most important qualities of a leader? A leader is a person who hungers for God’s presence to invade the earth and pursues Him with others all their days, not plateauing, growing cynical or feeling resentful. Leaders should be vulnerable enough to connect with, but strong enough to follow; people who seek to do, to love, to influence and who give away what they have; those who look for the best in other people and help them use their strengths to pursue God’s will for their lives. A good leader is someone who is willing to step out of their comfort zone and initiate, in our passive generation, relationships with others who are different, rather than stick with those who are the same as them. They’re also people with a daily sense of accountability to God and connectedness to friends whose lives are marked by growing wholesomeness.

Q: Why are relationships so important in leadership? God’s timeless message is: Jesus calls you to be with Him and with those who are with Him. In 2 Timothy (2:21-23) Paul echoes this by saying that we should, “…pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord...” Spending time in God’s presence and walking in genuine relationships with a small group of people will multiply the influence of heaven on earth. We should therefore, pursue authentic relationships that exceed financial or personal opportunities. I agree with the author Jeremie Kubicek, who encourages leaders to pursue strong relationships in the following ways: 1. Empower others 2. Talk less, listen more 3. Give people your trust 4. Give to others and work to meet their needs not your own. Q: What do you hope your personal legacy will be? My aim is to see a new generation of leaders and communities infused with core biblical leadership values. I want to see small teams of people coming out of my relationships who receive value, love and identity; not from ministry or success, but simply from knowing God. People who step up and influence others, die to selfish ambition, grow in Kingdom authority, and go out to serve God in different arenas of society. I hope to influence young people to take personal responsibility for their own growth and development, and then go on to serve a small group of friends God gives them - like those the Father gave Jesus – who influence another small group and set a chain of relationships in motion.

TRAINING IN THE COMMUNITY T

he vision of YWAM Tamatave, Madagascar, is to establish God’s Kingdom and prepare the Malagasy to be missionaries from Madagascar to the nations. Church planting and evangelism teams regularly go out to rural villages to share the Good News and to train church leaders. Douce and Victor Ramasomanana joined the team in 1997. Here, Victor shares about their work and the great things God is doing through the team. After trying a number of different evangelism and discipleship approaches, YWAM Tamatave decided to divide the Tamatave region into six different zones. They also decided to take the training to the church members, rather than relying on them overcoming the many obstacles and transport difficulties to reach the YWAM training centre. All the church leaders welcomed this news, especially the older ones. “It was clear to them that if they were to see growth in their churches, they needed to be trained. We agreed that they would be more at ease in their own villages and in a position to practice what they had learnt straight away.” The training is run once a month in each zone with the aim that each group of leaders will pass on the information to younger leaders from their churches who can go and teach people in other villages. “We aim to communicate biblical truths and to teach church leaders the commands of Jesus, but it takes time to reach the goal. Effective discipleship takes lots of time.” The first training began in February 2013 in the village of AnkarefoPangalane river. Victor and a small team of YWAMers traveled there to train people from five near-by villages. “Living among these people, even for a short time, helped us to understand more about their lives and the struggles they go through, especially with no electricity, running water, toilets or showers in their homes.” “Most of us are part of the same tribe although we live in different places. We therefore had the advantage of being able to use the same dialect to communicate the Gospel Message. Most of the training is through spoken word, because most of the people in these rural areas are illiterate.” The YWAM volunteers have also been working in three other zones. Many of the villages in these areas are difficult to get to. To get to Pangalane east, for example the team must drive 45 minutes, walk for

three hours, then travel by canoe for over an hour. Yet the team is determined to persist, despite these obstacles, to take the Gospel to the people. “Our main challenge is the bad roads. We have to walk miles and miles to reach these remote villages and, in some places, depend on unstable canoes to cross the river. It’s very difficult for the people too, but God has put a fire in their hearts to come and do the training. Only God can ignite that fire for him.” The team have been encouraged by the way that God has been working in the lives of the people. In the first training session alone, 34 new leaders were trained and were able to put what they had learnt into practice right away to train a further 26 people. “God is really helping the new leaders easily understand the teaching, so that they can use it to share God’s Word with people who are not yet saved.” In Marovato-Ihotsika, the largest training zone, 23 locals took part in the training, several people gave their lives to Jesus and new converts were baptized. A witchdoctor also brought her clothing and the witchcraft items she used for worshipping bad spirits to destroy after deciding to follow Jesus. “God is really at work. He even raised three people from the dead. Mama Rose, one of our church leaders, an old man and a two-year-old girl the day before her funeral. God is still very much alive and is still raising people from the dead in our time.”

Vida animal: Altamente variada, incluindo elefantes, girafas e porcos selvagens. Povos População: 11,506,600 Grupos Étnicos: no mínimo 150 grupo étnicos diferentes.

Economy Although Chad recently became an oilexporting state, inadequate infrastructure and widespread corruption undermines the benefit this could have on the economy, and the industry is dependent on foreign investment. 80% of the population relies on subsistence farming and livestock raising for its livelihood. Health Life expectancy: 48 years, 10 years younger than the African average. Access: Access to healthcare is lacking, with an estimated 4 doctors per 100,000 people. HIV/AIDS: 210,000 living with HIV, with an estimated 12,000 aids-related deaths. Conflict Chad exists in a state of uneasy tension between various religious and political groups, often between the Muslims in the north and Christians in the south. The nation has a history of civil war and political coups since its independence from France in 1960, although it experienced relative stability in the mid90s and a ceasefire agreement between Chad and Sudan, signed in January 2010, ended a 5-year conflict.

Prayer for the nation 1) Thank God for the cease fire. 2) Thank God for improved roads, education, healthcare and governance. 3) Pray for the government to continue taking a strong stand on fundamentalism, 4) Pray for the Church to maximize on the open doors and continued religious freedom. YWAM JEM Tchad The team is a mix of Chadians and internationals transitioning from a pioneering to a more stabilized stage. Many leaders have been raised up and are actively involved in Church planting, pastoral, missionary and development activities. 1) Pray for the construction of ‘Village des Nations’, their first Campus, especially for funds, builders, materials and safety. 2) Pray for more international exposure for upcoming leaders. 3) Pray for protection as they venture into more unreached areas.

YWAM in Nigeria is investing in young people right across the country through education and training, mercy ministry, and evangelism. These images are from YWAMer Alex Abok who spent time training young people from Jos and Kaduna, giving them the tools to tell stories through the medium of photography.

Transformation begins with us Transformation begins with us

La transformation commence avec nous

Transformação começa conosco

G

arry and Anke Tissingh have been working with YWAM for 37 years, 33 of those years in Africa. Their passion is to see lives changed and thereby see the continent transformed. Here Garry unpacks why he and Anke are investing in the Leadership Development Course (LDC) and why they feel it’s key to the future of transformation, not just within YWAM, but throughout Africa.

G

G

The LDC is aimed at developing leaders, helping them understand the dynamic of God’s overall picture for their lives and their individual calling. The sixweek course focuses primarily on leaders in YWAM who have at least five years’ experience in leadership.

“There is a truth that we have to face: the maturity level of our ministries can only be to the degree that we have maturity in leadership. It’s therefore a priority for YWAM to train leaders to a new level of integrity.”

In this season, YWAM is gaining a greater understanding of transformation. We certainly didn’t have the same understanding when we set out 37 years ago. We came encouraging people to accept Jesus, but we didn’t teach on submission to King Jesus. In this generation, I believe that we could begin to see real transformation, whole nations turned around. But it starts with the individual. It starts with us.

Take the image of a sail boat. Underneath you have the keel – our character – that provides stability. You can have big sails – our competencies and gifts – but without the keel keeping the boat stable it can easily get blown off course. The mast – our calling – holds the sails up. Yet a broken mast cannot hold a sail. If you don’t understand God’s calling on your life, then things will go wrong.”

O mastro- nosso chamado- mantém as velas estendidas.

So far, Garry and Anke have trained around 120 YWAMers in Africa through the LDC. Anke’s own experience of attending the LDC was a real turning point in her own life:

“I was in the wilderness when I came to do the course. The LDC helped me move right out of it. My love for God and for ministry, my sense of who I was and of purpose, as well as the freedom I had in Christ all began to converge. Now, leading the LDC is a highlight for me, particularly because it creates an environment of trust. We meet together and God meets us. There is an anointing on that course. I have no other way to explain it.”

“In this generation, I believe that we could begin to see real transformation, whole nations turned around. but it starts with the individual. It starts with us.” .

The couple strongly believe that transformation in Africa comes out of relationships. It starts with us, then moves onto those we’re teaching, then finally to the rest of the mission. They model this through the LDC, beginning by showering love onto the delegates. “Something as simple as honouring someone’s birthday or anniversary can bring someone to tears,” explains Anke. “When we bring in service, care and hospitality, we begin to see a light go on. It’s wonderful to see.” The students who attend the course speak of it as a time of great blessing. “The LDC required a lot of hard work, but it was also a place where I felt cared for through hospitality and where I really felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. I thank God for this course.” (Fridah Kambura, YWAM Mombasa). “The LDC was a very special time in my life, one that I will treasure forever! The teachings were very relevant and practical, and we learned many important skills. There was also lots of room to process, reflect and focus on what God was focusing on.” (Brigitte Schoenenberger who served with YWAM in Morocco, Spain and Switzerland.)

i www.leader-development.org

he Biblical Education and Leadership Training (BELT) is a joint ministry between YWAM and Wycliffe Bible Translators founded with the purpose of equipping and training leaders and pastors who do not otherwise have access to training on the Bible. Since its inception in 1995, there have been more than 90 BELT seminars held in 28 countries with 45 different people groups. Just last year, they were held in places as far apart as Nepal, Mongolia, Fiji, DRC and Scotland. These seminars bring together church leaders from different backgrounds who are working in their communities teaching and living out the Word of God. YWAM also links with local churches and smaller mission organizations to achieve the primary objectives of BELT: One of the locations in which BELT seminars have been held is Isiro in DRC. This nation is in great need of discipleship and leadership training, especially with its current social and political climate, explains Mark Evans, BELT founder. “DRC is rich in natural resources, yet it’s arguably the poorest nation in the world. It has undergone 10 years of war with neighbouring nations, famine, and displacement, with an AIDS epidemic, guerrilla activity and continued corruption resulting in the death of millions and a nation ravaged,” said Mark. “The killing and trauma of the war have left many widowed and orphaned, as well as many emotional and spiritual scars which continue to haunt the people. The church is trying to meet this need, but many church leaders are illequipped to deal with the issues they face.” Pastor Jean Manzimba, a seminar attendee, agrees, “Corruption has grown, wars are being repeated, and evil is everywhere in the Congo,” he adds. “Even in the Church there is corruption. These BELT teachings will help us to fight corruption and bring freedom in our nation.” Primary objectives of BELT: · Multiply leaders who know God and His ways and are able to teach others · Develop in the participants the ability to reason from the Bible in all areas of life · Build the participants’ confidence in reading and teaching the scriptures · Impart an increasing enthusiasm and involvement in missions and evangelism. · Build unity between different church denominations.

Eleazar Naganea, a pastor and Bible teacher at one of the largest mainline churches in the northeast region of DRC, attended the BELT seminars in Isiro. “We have studied this material before, but the BELT way of teaching is different,” he explained. “It doesn’t just fill our brains, it’s a very practical teaching that changes lives.” During Naganea’s BELT outreach, the Mayor and District Commissioner of Isiro invited his group to share what they were learning. The team stood before 200 government officials and taught them about the biblical principles of government. The meeting was so well received, that Naganea returned each week to share all the teachings from the BELT seminars. In Isiro, DRC, these seminars have had a very powerful impact in other ways. They have created openness among church leaders from different denominations enabling them to work alongside one another, as well as being instrumental in bringing interdenominational organizations together. Their impact is also evident in the communities of the ministry leaders who attended the seminars. Anzadoka, is the headmaster of a school in a neighbouring community. He boasted of the impact the seminar had on both his family and school. “The BELT teachings changed my own behaviour and leadership, and as I shared the teachings in my own home, I also saw my wife and children transformed,” Anzadoka said. “We also taught the BELT material to young people in the school and saw immorality and violence decrease.” The DRC is just one example of where BELT has been working effectively and is making an eternal impact. The same effects are being seen in other parts of Africa, as well as in countries around the world. With biblical teaching, these ambassadors of Christ are bringing the love, hope, and light of Jesus to nations around the world, transforming communities through the power of the Gospel.

“With biblical teaching, these ambassadors of Christ are bringing the love, hope, and light of Jesus to nations around the world, transforming communities through the power of the Gospel.”
